As one might guess going from my profile picture, I'm a keen motorcyclist. Unfortunately motorcyclist and 'biker' are synonymous so when searching for new places to go and, in particular, new rest stops it becomes necessary to search the interweb for "biker cafes". I did this very thing yesterday, being at a loose end and fancying a ride to somewhere I've never been before, but without doing the whole 200 miles for fish & chips thing. So I punched "biker cafes" into Google and one of the places it suggested was The Bike Shed Cafe, next to the George Inn, just off the Gordano services exit of the M5. Suited up, I headed out for a pleasant enough ride and eventually stopped at The Bike Shed Cafe. With it being a bank holiday I fully expected it to be heaving with bikers, erm, sorry, motorcyclists. On arriving, though, there was only one other bike in the car park. As I was taking off my gloves and helmet the other guy on a motorbike approached his bike, as he was just leaving. We had a few minutes chat and a laugh among one another that we'd both done the same thing; asked Google to suggest a new place and had ended up here. As it happens, The Bike Shed Cafe caters more for your outdoorsy types and looking at the rack of mountain bikes just outside, the penny finally dropped that motorcyclists aren't quite the demographic they were targeting when this brainchild was first born into this world. The other guy and myself had a bit of a chuckle about that. However, my amusing (or not) anecdote about how I found this little place aside, let's get to the good stuff. Because good it absolutely is, and in reality I don't suppose they care whether you turn up on a motorcycle, a mountain bike or on horseback, we all spend the same money after all. The Bike Shed Cafe is a small annexe next to the George Inn. One presumes they are mutually affiliated. There is ample parking and being on the main road it is not difficult at all to find. The Bike Shed itself is a small outbuilding at the end of the carpark with a pleasant decked area adjacent for outdoor seating. It all looks and feels quite modern and well thought out. Inside I was greeted by a couple of nice young ladies who took my order and brought it out to me. The coffee was quite excellent - let's be honest, even in a world where it is impossible to throw a tea bag without hitting a coffee shop, really good coffee is not that common. I'm pleased to report that my americano with oat milk was at least a 9/10. On display at the counter was a vast selection of sweet cakey things which looked so tempting, but I'm trying to lose weight so I did my best to resist, but it was touch and go! I also ordered a cheese and chilli jam toastie, and again I was impressed with my choice. The bread was nice and thick and the cheese was oozing out of the sandwich so there was no skimping on any of the ingredients. Unfortunately, my diet was put on hold a bit yesterday after all! It came with a bitter green garnish of salad, but a few crisps on the side in addition would not have been unwelcome. Overall, though, it was most excellent and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this little coffee stop to anyone. It's highly unlikely but I hope my review gets enough attention from the motorcycle community to make this place a different kind of Bike Shed and next time I stop by there are a couple of dozen 'bikers' enjoying coffee and toasties in the bank holiday, ahem, sun.
