Called in on spec on a hot day for a light mid-week lunch and were thrilled to find what a superb place this is. It was busy but spacing was good, hygiene was efficient. We were given such a warm and highly professional welcome by the two brothers who own and run it. They apologised we may have to wait (no problem for us - the surroundings are gorgeous) but meanwhile brought us a large carafe of iced water and dealt with our drinks order. Then the menu! A treat! Fabulous fresh, beautifully prepared and presented delicious food with excellent service. My beef sandwich was the best ever! Diddy pots of homemade chutney and mayonnaise were a delight. Coffee was superb. Thank you for a great experience. Cannot recommend it highly enough. We will be booking a couple of nights with you for R&R before too long.

My husband and I had a lovely afternoon tea here yesterday for my birthday with our one year old son and dog. The tea included lovely sandwiches and cakes and delicious fresh scones with jam and cream. We sat in the stunningly beautiful garden (after a walk across the nearby Spaunton Moor which is also stunning). The service was impeccable and the manager was particularly kind and welcoming to our son and dog, providing milk and a high chair for our son and dog treats for our dog. They also have good baby change facilities. Highly recommended. Thank you for a lovely afternoon.

Celebrating a special occasion with friends - we decided to try somewhere new. We were not disappointed this restaurant ticked all the boxes. The menu was varied and featured local produce, all our choices were cooked to perfection. It was lovely to have pre-dinner drinks in the sitting room and return there for after dinner coffee. We had a lovely evening and will return soon. Highly recommended.

We came here for Sunday lunch with friends last year and enjoyed it so much that we decided to go for my husband's birthday treat and we were not disappointed. The weather was perfect so after a warm welcome we enjoyed a pre-lunch drink on the terrace, admiring the roses, while we chose from the menu. £32 for 5 courses was superb value. My hot smoked salmon starter with avocado, quail eggs and lemon dressing was generous and very tasty and my husband really enjoyed his home-smoked duck breast with boozy sultanas. The tomato soup was home-made and just right, and my raspberry sorbet cleansed my palate. Our roast beef and roast lamb were both very tender, bought from the local butcher in Kirkbymoorside I was told, and there was a generous selection of vegetables. We were both offered extra Yorkshire puddings but declined since we wanted a dessert! The gooseberry fool wasn't too sweet and my husband was very pleased to find fruit salad on the menu, which came with cream or ice cream (various flavours). On top of all this we were then offered a selection of the excellent cheeseboard too! The wine list is good and I enjoyed a dessert wine from a choice of 5 or 6. Finally we had coffee back on the terrace. Throughout our meal the service was exemplary - prompt without being over-attentive. A perfect meal. I'm planning to return to try afternoon tea next!

We were on holiday near Bridlington and had friends living near Harrogate. I put a request through Google for a country house hotel providing lunch somewhere halfway, where we could meet in a comfortable environment. We booked this hotel for lunch, being attracted by their excellent web site and the beauty of their situation. We were not disappointed, a warm welcome, wonderful food, especially my husbands gammon dish and the fish chosen by the rest of us, beautifully served. Sweets equally delicious and coffee served in the lounge. Nothing could have been better. We arrived within 10 minutes of each other, in pouring rain, by 3pm we were sitting in a beautiful sunny garden. Thank you to all the staff.

We had lunch at this charmingly old fashioned hotel restaurant. The comfortable lounge reminds one of days gone bye. The lunch menu provides an excellent choice of light dishes and sandwiches together with interesting starters and mains. The wine list is excellent, for me certainly the best locally. The service is welcoming and efficient. The dining room is not large, but comfortable and, unlike many restaurants that squeeze their guests on to tiny tables, the table was a good size for two. The atmosphere was calm and pleasant. The food was traditional and none the worse for that. It was well prepared and presented. For me one of the bonuses was that the restaurant serves great custard, unlike many these days. I really enjoyed lunch here, unfortunately the weather was not good during our visit so we were not able to enjoy the terrace and garden. I will certainly return and recommend this to those who are seeking good food in a great setting.

We were doing a circular walk from hutton le hole to lastingham and back and just as we left the moor we came across this place. we wondered if it was too posh and expensive for us walkers but no it welcomed us with open arms and was extremely moderately priced - less than many pubs. we sat in the incredible garden and ordered a small crab salad and crab sandwich (neither on the menu. they had fresh crab for a more elaborate dish but we wanted something plain and they were happy to oblige). it was fresh local crab and the salad came with 2 small eggs too (quali?) . also lovely fresh interesting rolls and butter and home made chutney and a fabulous home made coleslaw. with 2 halves of beer and a cider the total sum was 16 pounds!! unbelievable. we wished they had charged more. lovely people too. the grounds go on for ever - we strolled for about 10 minutes. On our way to Lastingham to start a walk a friend suggested we visited Lastingham Grange since she recommended the food so highly. We therefore decided to have morning coffee before starting our walk. The gracious hosts suggested we sat on the terrace which was just heavenly in the sunshine, surrounded by the stone walls of the hotel, flowers and trees and the scent of the roses in the sunken garden was divine. Coffee turned into a late breakfast and I enjoyed a perfect bacon sandwich, in toast, served with a sprig of lavender on the plate. Just £4.99! My husband thoroughly enjoyed his Eggs Benedict which also cost £4.99, and we were loathe to leave. Total bill came to £17.23! We've booked Sunday Lunch next! This is a charming countryside hotel in a lovely Yorkshire location. We booked this venue as a meeting point to celebrate an 80th birthday party with around 30 guests.Everything was courteously & professionally executed. The welcome given to everyone was friendly & genuine. The service was exceptional.; Polite & attentive at all times without being in the least intrusive. The food orders were taken efficiently, and all the meals delivered promptly & together. The food was all very well prepared with good sized portions & ample side dishes. The nature of the event meant that the "lunch" lasted for most of the day, but we were never hurried in the slightest, and the service remained exemplary throughout.I noticed that there were a number of couples, and smaller groups, also having Sunday lunch in their other dining areas (we were given a suitably sized private room for our party). From what I observed the high culinary standards & level of service that we received was applied to all their patrons.A truly traditional & well run establishment, in a perfect rural getaway location.

Charming "retro" hotel - preserved in aspic, perhaps? - in a little village slightly off the beaten track - approach roads single track in parts. Previous reviews had led us to expect good food, but it was better than that - excellent local ingredients imaginatively cooked & presented, & served by enthusiastic & friendly young waitresses. We chanced upon Lastingham Grange about 12 months ago when we called in for lunch during a walk on the North Yorkshire Moors. The hospitality and friendliness in the way we were greeted and the quality of the lunchtime food dictated that perhaps the next time we were in the area we would try Lastingham Grange for our evening meal. We weren't disappointed. The same friendly and attentive staff greeted us on our arrival and the service was very good. The meals we ordered were well presented although a more leisurely pace between courses would have been preferred on our part. This is easily within our ability to make the staff aware that we'd like just a little more time between courses, however it certainly wouldn't stop us from going back there again when we're on the North Yorks Moors.

a celebratory lunch today was a treat from two friends well known to the hotel. Welcomed warmly and invited to sit in the spacious, comfortable lounge whilst we made our choices. It was lovely simply being able to relax in such homely charm. Lunch was served in the warm dining room - belly pork, steak & kidney pudding, beetroot & goats cheese salad, strawberry roulade, mango parfait and bilberry goats milk ice cream - washed down with a glass of Merlot (each!) and topped off by tea & coffee (really good coffee) back in the lounge. The weather was cold and overcast but we still took a turn around the expansive grounds before having to head away back into reality. Read all the amazing reviews so decided to give this a try for a birthday lunch. Somewhat disappointed to find ourselves alone in the dining room at first, but fortunately a few more people arrived......mostly fairly elderly and there was a very " hushed" atmosphere. Our thoughts on the food were mixed; smoked haddock and spinach pancake starter was tasty as was my husband's cheese terrine. His roast rack of venison was excellent but my pork fillet in cider sauce with caramelised apples was very disappointing and actually had quite a lot of mushrooms in (the menu did not mention mushrooms) and the apples had not been caramelised.Vegetables were extremely disappointing; diced swede and spinach. For a restaurant of this standard we had expected a better and more colourful selection. We opted out of desert but ordered coffee. This was served in the comfortable and attractive lounge but again we were disappointed as the coffee was very weak and we were very surprised that no chocolate or petit four was served with it as in most places. The two two course meals, a bottle of wine and coffee for two came to over £60, fair enough usually for a country hotel/ restaurant such as this, but on this occasion we did not feel we had had good value.Having read such good reviews it is perhaps possible that we were unlucky to be there on a quiet day and maybe even the regular chef was not there. There is no doubt it is in a lovely setting and it was nice to experience " old fashioned" service and charm. I am sure it is a lovely place to stay as it felt very homely and welcoming and staff were clearly eager to please. The beautiful, tranquil garden is a real plus too.We were very pleased to have been.......for the experience, but sadly were a little disappointed with the food and think that we were just unlucky the day we chose, hence the " average" rating given, rather than " very good".

We visited this delightful hidden gem this week while on holiday in the Scarborough area. We discovered it via the Hi Life card and were able to take advantage of savings which was an added bonus! It was a lovely pleasant journey of discovery through the countryside to arrive at Lastingham Grange. When we arrived and saw the grandeur of the place we were a little concerned we may be under-dressed - but on voicing our concerns to the lady who greeted us we were quickly assured that 'there were no rules here' which really put us at ease. This set the tone for the rest of our visit which we enjoyed immensely. It started with drinks in the stunning garden round the back of the house, which was just bursting with colour and was obviously well cared for. We were then shown into the dining room for our 5 course lunch which was delicious from start to finish - highlight had to be the roast beef dinner, a plate full of top quality beef and home made huge Yorkshire Puddings (we were encouraged to have 2 or more of these if we wanted by the very charming young man who was serving us). The dessert of nutty meringues was a fitting sweet end to the meal - we were even asked if we wanted seconds!!Throughout the meal the service we received really was second to none, the staff were attentive yet kept out of the way when not needed. We have never experienced anything quite like it. Overall I would just like to say that we felt so at home at Lastingham Grange and it's reassuring to know there are still some establishments out there who know how to provide first class customer service and first class home made food!Thank you - we WILL be back! :-)

After a delightful drive over the moors, you arrive at this hidden treasure, with its old fashioned charm, where theres always a very warm welcome .Sitting out on the terrace for your pre lunch drinks is recommended ,so you can admire the well manicured garden,But If its a bit on the cool side there's a comfy home from home lounge with a nice log fire,to peruse the menu. The food is fantastic, with service that's how it should be .A special place to go on a special occasion,I'm certainly looking forward to my next visit.A relaxing experience leaving the rat race behind and stopping the clock for a few hours..

We only live 5 miles from this enchanting establishment so we have not stayed as guests there. However, since discovering it by chance several years ago, it has become a firm favourite. We visit for lunch or tea whenever we feel the need to relax and restore our spirits. In the warm weather we sit, read and eat in the garden, which is extensive, beautiful and so peaceful. When it is colder we go into the lounge where there are comfortable sofas and chairs and a lovely fire. We are greeted by name and are made to feel most welcome. This is a family run establishment and the family and their staff are delightful. The place is not modern or smart. It is more in keeping with Miss Marple, feels like home, warm, welcoming, comfortable and spotless. The food is outstanding. It is a treasure, an oasis of calm, friendly, outstanding quality. The countryside in which it stands is incomparable. Treat yourself to a visit. You will love it.

For breakfast there is a selection of cereals and fruit, etc. plus a full English cooked breakfast cooked to order. Dinner was a set price with many choices. The steak was memorable!

Very little has changed over 25 years in the extraordinarily high standards of the discrete and friendly service, wonderful food and exceptional location and atmosphere. Words cannot do the owners and staff justice for the unpretentious quality of this place in all its facets - a real gem. Drinks on the terrace in the beautiful grounds, followed by Sunday lunch here just cannot be bettered.

Due to been busy with other things we haven't been here for a few months. Our loss! Food and service as good as ever. Steve is a great host with a sense of humour! Hope to be coming here more often.

Food was delicious although not somewhere I’d go regularly as it is very expensive.

Visited on the spur of the moment and we weren't disappointed. Great welcome, good atmosphere even with few clientele and food was of excellent standard. Would definitely recommend a visit for a drink, food or both.

Only a quick update. The pub has new landlords. As of this post there was no WiFi. Card payment machine etc. Anything do do with the Internet as they have not resolved that due to Marstons cutting it off as new landlords are leasing pub. The tips the young waitresses used to get all to themselves is now shared out. How I am not sure but as long as it is for the staff aline and not landlords that's okay as the law on staff tips changed on Oct 1st 2024. If you are giving tips for the waitresses I would give them cash to put in their own pocket. They earn it. For the girls it's clothes and makeup money. Extra pocket money for them. Not tried the new menu yet but reliably informed its good.
