The best restaurants in United Kingdom serving British food

My Dad and I enjoyed a thoroughly delicious, delightful lunch here. It was quiet but didn't lack atmosphere, beautiful old build full of charm, but with important aspects such as a wheelchair accessible entrance and toilet. Ben looked after us and was kind and attentive in all the ways that matters to us when we're having a treat of good food!

We were a party of nine, visiting on Monday evening, which might have contributed to lower than expected scores. It was pretty quiet and we soon were the only party in the place, hence the 3 stars on atmosphere. It was a bit flat. Food was good, but several of the options were unavailable. Then they weren't. So having ordered 3 portions of scallops, were told there we only 2 left, so switched one to oysters, then 3 portions of scallops turned up plus the oysters. Waiting staff all a bit confused. Otherwise a fine evening was had by all.

Stopped here for lunch. Great staff and yummy food. Fantastic view.

Looked up brunch spots and The Dock was in the top 3. They have great harbour views and is super clean. Staff are really nice and friendly and food is delicious. Would recommend to anyone coming to visit from outside Devon (we came from london)

Where to start! Booked table online no email confirmation so tried ringing but just a recorded message. We arrived via the back door from the car park passing an open door to the kitchen and saw a heap of Yorkshire Puddings on a shelf open to the elements. Relieved to have a table we settled in and ordered our drinks one of which arrived incorrectly. Ordered two turkey dinners minus the 'yorkies' !! It came rather quickly which in itself seemed odd. It was below average for the cost. We then ordered desserts, sticky toffee pudding with custard and a lemon meringue pie. These were not good and obviously bought in. Expressing our disappointment staff weren't interested even though they had asked our opinion. We decided not to order anything else and was then presented with the bill without us asking for it. Over the time we were there we were served by numerous different staff not allocated one waitress which would have been preferable. On paying we again were asked how everything had been and again we told them we had felt very rushed and it had not been the relaxing Sunday lunch we had envisaged. Absolutely no apology and she obviously resented our negative comments. In hindsight I wish I had read recent reviews and realised the extensive menu was somewhat dubious and probably not all prepared on the premises. Pub is beautiful inside, such a shame about being rushed with lack of customer service and poor food. We will not be returning.

We have been visiting this hotel for over 30 years The past4 years I am in a wheelchair and must say that the staff the facilities and food just get better each time It is fantastic for a wheelchair user It’s so warm comfortable and family owned so it’s genuine service I feel totally at home here I cannot recommend enough I wished we live nearer as we would be here more often Cannot recommend it enough if notin a wheelchair you will be spoiled for room choice. We used to love their lovely suites looking out on lake. We spent a few Christmas breaks here some years back fab. But they do not neglect wheelchair users. The disabled rooms are great as is room service if not up to going down for food The Sunday lunch is very special. I have had my brothers up a few times and they absolutely raved about the food. The restaurant is located in Biggar High Street, where there is parking on-street in the locality for those driving, however we’re fortunate enough to live within reasonable walking distance. It’s closed on Monday & Tuesdays but otherwise open for lunch and dinner. The menu usually has half a dozen starters and desserts with around eight mains courses to choose from and these all feature fairly frequent changes. Currently the cost of a three course meal is £31.95 per head which represents a modest saving on the individual course prices. Supplements apply to some dishes which can increase the cost marginally but on the upside there are also discounted deals, such as “Steak Night” on a Thursday where you can get a starter and a steak for £25. To give some idea of what food is offered, on our last couple of visits we had Thai Fish Cakes with lemon mayo, Warm Bacon, Black Pudding & Potato Salad, Chicken Liver Pate with oatcakes and a Mushroom, Brie & Thyme Tart as starters. For mains we’ve had Haddock wrapped in Parma Ham, Breast of Chicken in Drambuie Sauce, Parsley & Hazelnut Crusted Cod, and Ballotine of Chicken & Haggis with a whisky sauce (as an alternative to peppercorn) all served with a selection of potatoes and vegetables. For desserts we both had the Cherry Bakewell Tart with Amaretto Custard on one occasion, an Apple & Blueberry Crumble Tart with custard and a Baileys & Strawberry Cheesecake with Chantilly Cream and fresh berries on another visit. Generally speaking the food is very good with only an occasional slight disappointment when for example a flavour mentioned on the menu isn‘t particularly noticeable in the dish itself - the Amaretto was subtle to the extent we couldn’t taste it in the custard for instance. Drinks are typically priced for a restaurant - e.g. we had a bottle of wine at £32 on one of the visits, a glass of Sauvignon is £5.25, and a G&T £4.75. Service is friendly, mannerly and efficient in our experience. On the past couple of visits it was busy and there was a good ambiance in the main restaurant with some guests being directed to the upstairs section on one occasion. Our only gripe is that the seats are not all re-upholstered and if you get one which hasn’t been "padded-out" in recent times it can get quite uncomfortable sitting for too long which is not ideal. Toilets are well maintained.

My mother and I (and two dogs) had a wonderful roast. The beef was amazing, vegetables cooked well and gravy delicious. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend 😀

Really good quality food. Good size portions, reasonably priced with friendly staff. Also available a good gluten-free range.

Robin is a man, a man of seemingly average stature upon first inspection, but after sharing just a few moments with him, it becomes clear he is no man, but a god. Thank you Robin for having us, we talk about you every few days.

This was a wonderful find and I have been back on a number of occasions. The food is amazing and the staff and atmosphere is brilliant. The sad note to this is that it is closing soon and we will be missing yet another excellent pub due to lack of custom. I’ll be very sad to see the end of yet another amazing establishment.
