The Barony in South Lanarkshire

My friend made reservations for a late lunch for three of us during a weekday. Whilst the food was delicious it was a little pricey for what was served - especially given the small portion sizes. Overall the service was friendly, and we did happen to enjoy ourselves. From a personal perspective though, I would say this restaurant is catered more towards an older generation. The atmosphere is very quiet and "proper" - not the sort of place a group of friends can have their yearly catch up.

Husband and I went here for our anniversary. Had a lovely meal, 3 courses, nice atmosphere, good price, and friendly waitress. Would highly recommend.

The thing that let it down massively was the portion sizes, £18.95 for the breast of chicken in a drambuie sauce with sautéed potatoes and mixed vegetables, the chicken was tiny, looked like it had been cut in half lengthways and 1 piece served on top of 5 thin slices of sautéed potatoes and a few bits of veg, this was at best a young child's portion of food. Again, the rib eye steak at £27.95 arrived on the same sized plate as the chicken, a handful of chips and a small bit of salad containing 1 cherry tomato cut in half. Left still hungry and didn't want to order a desert or the cheese to find these were also minute, home via the chip shop! Don't visit if you are hungry. Won't be back unless the portion size reflects the pricing.

What a gem of a restaurant. Olivia looked after us so well and our lunch was fabulous. Thai fish cakes and duck pate for starters were a lovely pre cursor to the main event. Rump of lamb cooked to perfection and chicken in a peppercorn sauce (which I would have by the ladle). Will definitely return.

We arrived and were warmly greeted and shown to our table. The decor is gentle and sophisticated but you did sink down into the chairs a little. We chose our food. I had the Thai fishcake balls with lemon mayo which were tasty but did not taste of Thai at all and the mayo did not taste of lemon and was a bit heavy for the fishcakes. A Thai chilli dipping sauce would have been better. However, still very nice. My partner had the roasted red pepper and tomato soup which was delicious 😋. Really very good! However we had to ask for bread as it did not come with any. The next course was brought out almost immediately which is something I really don't like as you feel rushed. That's why I gave four stars for service as the waiting staff were excellent. I had the loin of bacon in a mustard sauce with mash and kale. The loin was good, as was the sauce. I think the mash could have been more creamy and buttery, it was a little solid. My partner had the lamb in mint and red currant gravy with sauteed new potatoes. The lamb was soft and flavourful. It was very good but not a show stopper for the money. We shared a pudding, raspberry cheesecake which was soooo creamy and delightful. Lovely presentation too. All in all, great food, nice atmosphere and lovely service. I was expecting perhaps a little more, it was very well cooked food but nothing I would not be able to do at home. No breaks between courses is a no no, we would have had another round of drinks if we had had a break.

Booked a table here for the first time and wasn’t disappointed. Main course was beautifully prepared and fish was cooked to perfection as was my partners steak. Only downsides were the chairs were a bit worn out and therefore not very comfortable and the vegetables were a bit overcooked. Apart from that we rated the restaurant as a seven and eight out of ten respectively which means we would both go again! Thank you for the great service and warm welcome. Well done The Barony!

Higher than average, but also not that great - food was ok (although the risotto had to be returned as it was not cooked properly so probably avoid), nice service and decent interior, would probably not return

Amazing little gold mine, easy to find, food cooked to perfection and an amazing atmosphere. Staff at front of house were friendly, proffesional and have amazing people skills. Would highly recommend popping off the M6 to Biggar and taking the time and effort to stop at a hidden treasure.

Went there for a meal on Steak Thursday. Really lovely place. Great food lovely people . Can't fault it. A little gem.

First time experiencing this restaurant but have passed it many times. We thought we would experience the steak dinner deal. The food was nicely presented and cooked well ( although there could have been more salad). We shared and thoroughly enjoyed the Ginger Pudding. The service was perfect and the atmosphere itself, warm and welcoming. We will return and therefore, recommend.

After travelling for a celebration of a family members life, I booked this online and the reviews were correct … the food was fantastic and beautifully presented. We all had different meals and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Great service too! We had early evening meal so not many people in for atmosphere but this did not hamper our enjoyment . Visiting the area, before booking we checked in advance to make sure there's ease of access for those with mobility problems, and all was fine. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a friendly smile and shown to our table. We found all the staff to be friendly, efficient, and attentive. We chose one special and one meal from the standard menu, and it was excellent quality. At each point the staff checked to ensure the meal was fine. I would happily book again when visiting the area.

Lovely ambiance in a beautiful restaurant. Food was exceptional and the waiting staff were professional and efficient but also friendly, nothing was too much trouble.

We ate here for the first time on Friday June 23rd. We were greeted with a smile from Anna, who then showed us to our requested window table. The menu was just perfect, & our food was exceptional. We had full 3 courses, Pate /goats cheese tart, followed by chicken wrapped in parma ham stuffed with haggis, which was absolutely delicious, & my other half had the spinach ricotta tortelloni which was equally delicious. We were full as the portions were generous, however we managed to squeeze in desserts of chocolate turkish delight tart & mixed berry cheesecake, all washed down with a bottle of Chardonnay. We would highly recommend this beautiful restaurant as the food & service was exceptional. Thank you Anna & team for looking after us. Harry & John .

Not to be missed - Amazing The ambiance of the restaurant is first class, the food is excellent and the staff so professional. We had the mushroom stroganoff, Lamb, and Feather blade beef. Absolutely outstanding. Don’t pass by the Barony without giving it a try. Well done to the team.

Came here in November. we had starters and the Sunday roast, both of which were absolutely delicious. service was excellent too.

One of the best places we have eaten in a while. Food was to die for, very tasty and well presented. Restaurant is tastefully decorated with a good feel. Staff were very lovely and attentive. We will definitely be back.

Another good meal at the Barony. We went on steak night where I had a ribeye and my wife a sirloin. Cooked to perfection with great service and some of the superb IPA. A great little restaurant.

We’ve not been here for a while so really didn’t know what to expect. We had a lovely meal complemented by great service and really couldn’t fault it. It was steak night so we had 2 steaks cooked to perfection. A really nice experience and we will definitely be back in the very near future.

We had visited here for steak night in September last year and had a terrific meal. It was a family members birthday so we thought we would go back. Not sure if they have a new chef but very disappointing. None of the steaks were cooked as ordered, we only sent two back as they were very rare . When they came back they had with the same fries which were now pretty cool . I’m in the trade and would always send fresh accommodations back with a meal. Meat was not good quality and tasteless, sauces very basic and bland . No server came to ask if everything was ok and this was not because the restaurant was busy as only another couple of tables in . We had to take the steaks back to the bar ourself ,not good customer service.Couldn’t fault the starters or desserts.

Booked in for Christmas lunch, friendly staff, but lunch was disappointing, very basic Christmas main, roast potatoes were not roasted, small amount of veg, no parsnips, no kilted sausages, no mash. No tablecloths, which would have been a nice touch, we were upstairs with another group of 6, no atmosphere. We were offered a cocktail & canapés on arrival, which we enjoyed, but still left disappointed.

My wife’s cod didn’t taste right at all - definitely not fresh. There was only one other dish on the menu my wife could eat, which she didn’t want. No offer was made to make something else. We paid the bill and left. The person who appeared to be in charge looked entirely unconcerned by the situation. On arrival, when asked if they did mocktails, she had told us that they were “not that sort of restaurant”, whatever that was supposed to mean. Waiting staff were very pleasant and professional - same can’t be said for the senior staff member we encountered. We used to visit regularly when in Biggar. Sadly we won’t be doing so again.

The restaurant is based in the centre of Biggar where there is on-street parking available. It’s closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but otherwise serves lunch and dinner. We booked same day online from the restaurant’s website and found this a very straightforward process. The menu online differed a bit from that on offer on the night. There is typically a choice of six starters, eight mains and five desserts. A current deal offers a 2 course lunch for £19.95 or a 3 course dinner for £28.95, which gives a modest saving on individual prices, although some dishes do have a supplement. Our booking was for early evening on a Saturday and the restaurant was fairly busy to start with and got busier as the evening progressed, including a private group booking upstairs, but maintained a pleasant ambiance throughout our visit. I was too busy looking at the menu to get much of a chance to view the wine list but the latter looked to have a decent choice. (We’ve had the house wine before and it has usually been good). In the distant past you could BYOB but this became less attractive by increasing corkage charges and may no longer exist as an option. In any case we selected a bottle of NZ Siegfried Old Coach Road Nelson Sauvignon Blanc (£26.95) which was very good. If being picky I would appreciate a nicer glass to put it in. We ordered up starters of Bacon, Black Pudding & Potato Salad, which is served warm with a wholegrain mustard dressing; and Haggis & Chicken Croquettes with a whisky & peppercorn sauce. For mains my wife requested the Hake in Parma Ham on a bed of crushed peas, served with potatoes and a butter sauce and I ordered the Rump of Lamb with rosemary & mint gravy, served with sautéed potatoes and a creamed leak, peas & bacon combination. The Bacon & Black Pudding starter is a favourite and remains so and I thought the croquettes were an interesting variation on the theme - neither the haggis or sauce were too peppery for my tastebuds. Both mains were nicely cooked and everything on the plates were full of flavour. To finish off we both chose the Toffee Apple Crumble Tart, one served with Baileys custard per the menu and one without the Baileys. I didn’t taste Baileys so I’m not sure if I got the right dish but in any case it was good. Coffees to follow. Toilets were well maintained as expected. Service was always polite and friendly, if a little rushed. I was still finishing my last chew of the mains dish as the plate was being taken away! It may be over enthusiasm to please but regardless we were still allocated our 90 minute slot per the booking. I don’t think we could have sat too much longer on the seats in any case which lack stuffing. If you are looking for very good food in nice surroundings at a reasonable price, The Barony is a good choice. Our overall bill was just under £95, split between food £61.90 (inc £4 supplement for lamb) and £32.95 for drinks.

Recently moved to the area and The Barony was recommended by a number of friends. Visited tonight for an early meal and was very pleased with it all. The food, the service, value for money. A very clean and pleasant environment. We will return.

First time visit, passed the restaurant for many years and didn't manage to visit, so many lost opportunities. It is a very good restaurant, food was excellent. My main course was herb crusted ling, it was very good and if you're counting a more sustainable fish. My starter and dessert were also excellent. Staff were very nice and service was quick and efficient, happy to return anytime.

Really disappointed having just moved to the area we were told this was a quality restaurant unfortunately this was not our experience. Initially the bacon and black pudding salad was nice soup not so tasty the steak was the issue, the medium well fillet arrived rare when we asked for this to be remedied it came back well done which was fine if the fillet had not been part of the chain, which was the real disappointment. Add to this a filet with two bites taken that was not a cause for concern from the staff sums up a very cynical and poor attitude, the female with the dark hair who appeared to be the senior person or manager shouting from the back of house who hadn't asked if there was a problem "have a nice night" was passive aggression in full flow. Fair to say we will not be back.

We enjoyed a ‘reunion’ lunch here. The food was delicious. This restaurant give you a ‘Light Bite’ option. A slightly larger starter then a dessert, so one feels replete, but not stuffed! One example was a selection or patés as a main course.

Despite the lockdown restrictions we enjoyed our dinner at the Barony. The staff were brilliant and the food very good. The small wine list was interesting, too.
