Lovely friendly pub with beautiful views of the cathedral. Beautiful log fire which was needed on a rainy cold day.
Menu is a little limited and most things come with sauces or are odd gastropubs choices.
Friendly attentive service once seated, took several minutes for staff to notice us on arrival as it was very busy.
Overall would recommend a visit.
Have had sunday roast here Tina an i visited today for my Birthday lunch food was outstanding ambience could not be faulted an the staff were warm welcoming an friendly we would rate the Horse an Jockey 10/10
What a let down. My son loves this place, he went there for his birthday on 01/01/23. He wanted to go for his birthday again this birthday 2024, always awkward when a child's birthday is on New Year's Day. So when i booked, I was pleased to see Jurassic Grill open again, same as last year. My son had chicken pox on the lead up to Christmas, and was excited to go. On 29/12/23 I receive an email saying my reservation had successfully been cancelled. I didn't cancel it. When I called them, they said they were now closed on New Year's Day due to "unforeseen circumstances". I could book 31st dec or 2nd jan, so these "unforeseen circumstances" don't seem to matter either side of the 1st. If they weren't going to open on 1st, don't allow people to book it. Now I have an upset child, who has been left very disappointed. So, if you don't want to disappoint your child, don't book here. Don't worry Jurassic Gill, I won't try and give you money for food again.
We have been visiting them for many years and are our favourite Chinese restaurants in Winchester. Yesterday we had Pecking Duck, Mapo Tofu, Seafood crispy noodle and Choi sum dish, which were very nice. Also had a fish called Pomfret with ginger sauce, which we highly recommend.Definitely we will go back there again.
Chose to go here with my wife as a birthday celebration with son who works locally. Good choice. Lovely table in the corner, good pub food and we were very well looked after from start to finish. Good to judge the staff anywhere when they are rushed off their feet and the attitude of the two on duty last night was first class all evening. Thank you for your efforts.
Short trip for a coffee and pastries with family. Staff not particularly engaging and coffee not great. We remember this being a really friendly cafe with tasty food and lively atmosphere. Many tables not cleared, grubby toilets and not much selection to choose from when we visited in the late afternoon.
Lovely traditional little pub. We visited at christmas it was lovely. The staff - Sam and Luca, were brilliant, attentive and friendly they went above and beyond with their service - keep hold of them!
I had the pleasure of visiting the Vine yesterday with my adult son. We had booked for the Sunday Carvery.
We were greeted by the smiling Landlady, offered our drinks and shown to our table.
We were called to the Carvery where the Landlord Chef, carved selected freshly cooked meats. The array of vegetables was impressive. The food tasted first class and I heard similar opinions from other diners.
Well done the Vine - we will be back.
Looks can be deceiving as the pastries look nice from the window but were a real let down. The pastries were extremely dry and hard, almost stale like.
Coffee and hot chocolate were ok.
Are they copying The Americans with their demands for Tips.?
Met with family in Winchester for a meal. It took a while to find a pub to get booked for 6. We had Sunday lunch today. It was brilliant! And it tasted homemade rather than from the freezer. Between us we had the nut roast, roast beef, lasagna and fish pie. Excellent and generous helping of vegetables and roast potatoes.
We went here with friends for lunch. They have excellent set tapas plates which we all had (from memory there are four different ones to choose from) and the presentation together with taste/quality could not be faulted. Great value for money too. Our server Ben was very attentive and knowledgeable providing great service. I would highly recommend and we will definitely be back.
Popped in on our way home from the Christmas Market in town and wished we hadn’t. It was the most baffling and unwelcoming experience I think I have ever had. We were rudely told by the landlord there was a private function and we were not welcome there. It did not seem exclusive though as the barmaid seemed to be willing to take our order and there was no clear sign outside but having been sworn at and told he doesn’t need our f…ing money we felt that we would never step foot let alone spend any money there again. It was an upsetting encounter. As far from a hospitable experience as you can get!
£26.50 for a day pass, although asked for £30 which includes donation. Our party was made up of 5 adults - we didn’t donate.
To put into context, my husband and I have been members of Marwell in our days before our children. It holds a special place in our hearts. We moved away but always managed to make at least 2 visits a year as the children grew up & still do - the kids are now into their 20’s and often visit with us.
Sadly the experience over the last 10 -15 years has progressively gotten worse. Every time we go we hope it will be better. Marwell was always at the forefront of conservation and education & had an extremely successful breeding program for the rhinos and giraffes. Much money has been spent on enclosures that didn’t work, the snow leopards, the cheeta, the walkway over the persian leopard, now cloud leopard, the new tropical house, the gibbon enclosure, kids play areas.
Now it is a shell. Few animals, lots of paddocks full of weeds, & plastic bottles & little or no information.
The annual membership is a steal but place feels more of a kiddies play area than a serious home for conservation and education. It’s expensive and disappointing.
Bit on context - The Cotswold Wildlife Park is £19 for an adult. A much smaller facility but full of animals and information & staff happy to help and answer questions.
Well, the Old Tea House appears permanently closed and the village has lost a great asset and social hub . For the last year, the venue has appeared extremely confused about what it wants to be and who it is catering for. Clearly its former customer base felt the same and have stayed away in their hordes. This has been a tea room for as long as I remember- I recall coming here as a child decades ago and I think it is a tragic loss to the village. It is a wonderful spot to sit outside and watch the world go by or to sit inside in inclement weather. The best thing the owner could do for the village is to sell or lease it to someone who wants to bring the soul back. Tragic.
