Unexpectedly excellent meal, we had a visit arranged for a tour of a local vineyard and stoped here for lunch. When we arrived we were greeted and shown to a table having ordered our drinks. On perusing the menu I spotted one of my favourite meals, linguine with salmon and prawns. When I queried what sauce it came with the chef came to talk to us to explain how he cooked the fish in the oven in an olive oil sauce with baby tomatoes. I ordered this meal and my wife ordered a small steak with home made onion rings, and the usual mushrooms, tomatoes and chips. When the food arrived it looked amazing and my wife immediately took a photo of the food. I can only say that I was very impressed by the taste and how well it was cooked, my wife was also very pleased with her steak and onion rings. The beer was their standard bitter and was a nice clean pint. The service was excellent and the prices were very reasonable. I would certainly come back for another lunch if I am in the area.

Lovely pub - dog friendly and a nice one to go to if you’re on your own Sadly the trip was ruined by a selfish lady who wasn’t very tolerant of dogs and decided to be poisonous to me even though I apologised many times and made every effort to move them. This is a country pub with dogs / some times there are more dogs than people.

Visited this pub to check it out for an upcoming family dinner. Went in and were served immediately, although no dark ales. We decided to sit in the garden but had to walk through 3 large and one medium dog to get there. There were other, well-behaved dogs in garden, no problem. When leaving, the 3 large dogs and person, had moved to another place but still blocking access/egress. In total she apologised 3 times to me or my husband when having to move the dogs, but did not consider moving the dogs out of the only way for us or others coming or going to the pub. We do not dislike dogs but do not feel that we, or anyone, should have to walk through or past dogs of an unknown disposition. We will not be taking the family (or visiting ourselves) in the near future, if at all.

Clearly for local people. Partner and I had a beer and wine which was ok. Had to wait to be served as know one behind the bar. Lady sat at bar talking as if she actually owned the place. Despite the signs saying no, she was vaping and her dog (white one) was barking at any other that walked in. Bar staff were giving her extra treatment.

Went to The Vine today for Sunday lunch with my family . The carvery was ok , but was luke warm . My dessert was cold and I sent it back to have it re heated , it came back eventually after the young lad tried to take it to another table . It was still under cooked so I sent it back and asked for it to be taken off my bill , which it was . When I got home I checked my receipt and I had an extra £4.00 added , it just stated food . I called the pub and they said you had lamb at the carvery so you pay an extra £2.00. I asked over the phone why I was charged £4.00 and the girl on the phone said you have been over charged come back and we’re refund you . What was naughty is there are no signs to say you pay extra for the lamb on top of the carvery price . As a new customer you would have expected the landlord or manager to have come over when I sent the dessert back but no one came over . Sadly my family and I will not be returning .

I've heard the Sunday carvery are amazing as well, but bookings are advisable due to it often selling out. Great pub, not one complaint.

Lovely pub, with a charming staff - chef & barmaid. We got there just too late for lunch but the chef was sitting down at the bar & offered to re-open the kitchen & cook us a meal. Really lovely of him, the food was good, the drinks were good & service great. Only complaint? the dreaded card machine which asks you - before you have eaten or sipped your drink, whether you want to leave a tip. It really makes you want to say "no" but we did say "yes". I think if it had been left to us regarding tips, we would have left more - after we had enjoyed the meal. We certainly will go back & probably book a Sunday lunch, as for tips, we will decide after we have paid cash. To the two brilliant staff though - a big thank you.

A delightful country pub with a warm welcome but there it stops. The food list is short and very pub grub. The wine list is chalked on an overhead beam; three reds, three whites, 2 rosee, and a Prossco. The Cumberland sausage and mash was not at all pleasant. The sausages appear to have been reheated from the previous day - tough and tasteless. The roasted chicken breast was smothered in BBQ sauce and grilled with rasher of bacon and cheese on top. The wine was reasonably priced for an awful quality.

Experience was ok, but with a few tweaks could be much better. Booked a table for a pre Mothers Day lunch and given pick of tables in the right side bar, whereas everyone else eating seemed to be on the other side. Box of cutlery arrived promptly but instead of giving us menus or taking our drinks order waitress went back behind bar to serve other customers. Menu was brief and standard pub fare but very reasonable prices. Chicken gougons had been left in the fryer a bit too long so were very hard and dark, but portion was generous. Halloumi burger and pie were nice (although didn't detect any ham in the chicken, ham and leek pie). Ordered weakest bitter and it arrived very cloudy. When asked whether it was usually like that waitress didn't seem to know (or even what it was called). Limited dessert menu and unfortunately salted caramel icecream was unavailable. Nice to visit pub actually in the village for a change, but while service was charming it lacked a bit of professionalism which could easily be improved

Went with my family in December 2022 shortly after the new owners had taken over. The service was good, the food was well presented and all three courses were delicious and enjoyed by all. Decided to pay another visit in January 2023 having been told by a villager there was a new Chef as the previous one had left. The menu was slightly different, the pie was off the menu but a rump steak had been added, plus a few other tweaks had been made. The service was good but the food was disappointing. The daily special of chilli was served in an enamel dish that you would find in a country vet's surgery back in the 1950's. Regrettably it was dry, claggy and had an underlying bitter taste. The other diners' were also disappointed in the presentation and quality of their meals, needless to say there were no clean plates returned to the kitchen. I really hope the new owners succeed as Hambledon residents can easily support a village pub/restaurant such as the Vine but the food offering needs to be worthy of venturing out on a cold and wet January evening. It's not the end of the world, onwards and upwards. Good luck!

Had lunch here. While they do two meals for £15 from the specials board, we were more tempted by the more expensive a la carte. My wife had "chicken delicious" and I had the Butler's steak. Both were very nicely cooked, though the steak, which was described as "pink" was actually properly rare, which was not a problem for me but may be for some people. The pepper sauce with the steak was absolutely delicious, and brought the meal together. Rather than mushrooms with the steak, I asked for mixed vegetables, which were nice and fresh.

Called in as visited friends down the road and meet with welcoming friendly service. As we had planned to eat out that evening we opted for sandwiches, I went for the Blt and my wife had the sausage with pear and wine chutney. I have to say best sandwiches we have had in a long time. They were all made with quality fresh ingredients and a little salad with citrus dressing. Saw some of the main meals and they looked very tempting.

I visited The Vine for the first time on Sunday with my husband and a friend. We were greeted by friendly, smiling staff. We had a typical Sunday lunch which was well cooked, the portions were a good size with plenty of vegetables. The starters...

We had a family meal for 7 humans and us 2 dogs who slept under the table. The food must have been good because there were no leftovers for us! The service was quick and the staff were friendly and attentive. My owners are vegetarian and say the wild mushroom risotto was excellent; the meat eaters said their ribeye steaks, gammon and salads were the best they've had in a long time. The desserts were also fab', including yummy sticky toffee pudding and hot cookie dough. Next time we'll order our own meal!

Sun shining decided to go out for dinner, my partner booked 7.30 at the vine, been before to have drinks and darts very pleasant but not eaten since it having new owners, can not fault the food steak and swordfish all cooked well, though starters choices limited, but I am pudding girl, my only gripe is that staff not as attentive as I would expect no napkins or offer of condiments when food brought out or coffees after meal, nice village pub for locals.

Beautiful country pub serving delicious, traditional food. Nothing pretentious about this place. Friendly welcoming staff, great atmosphere, superb food. Gone are the days of this place serving up overpriced a la carte food. The new new owners ( a young family from Wales I think) have gone back to serving up delicious traditional pub grub and they do it well. A fine example of a village pub sticking to its values!!

It may be me that's at fault - my expectations.I've been coming to the Vine for years (apart from when the village was inaccessible) and have seen many changes. I'd got used to it as a good gastropub, slightly expensive, a bit posh but always very pleasant.New staff (manager/owner?) was very welcoming but the food's not gastropub style or quality. No hand-torn, pan-roasted pork scratchings on a bed of fluted weevil juice, just yer basic pie n chips, etc.Huge Nachos starter between two was OK - but it was far more substance than class. The pasta dish was nearly as big as a bouncy castle and the stodgy bangers and mash would've made sure said castle didn't become airborne. If you want good ol pub food in 1980s style - or just a plain old-fashioned boozer, this will suit you down to the ground. The bill was reduced - not because of any complaint - but the guy was simply encouraging a return visit.

When we arrived, we were amazed to find there were only two other couples in the pub....which meant we could choose any table we wanted (but doesn't give rise to a brilliant buzz in a pub!)The menu was quite restricted, as its Sunday, with three roast options (one veggie) and a couple of specials (both meaty) and three starters if you wanted them.......I was a bit disappointed with the range of food on offer - however there is an adage about doing a few things really well - and their roast dinners were great!Three of us had the lamb shank, served with roast potatoes rather than the ubiquitous mash potato - one had the nut roast - all served with a Yorkshire Pudding that could be seen from space(!) as well as side dishes of carrot and swede mash, green beans and individually baked cauliflower cheese. It was all very good, lamb shank came off the bone well, spuds could have been a bit more crispy (but we are roast tattie aficionado's!) - the nut roast came with its own veggie gravyGood range of well kept beers and a nice Eton Mess for dessert (for the only one of us who has hollow legs and could still eat a single thing!)

The new menu at the vine is exactly what you want from a pub meal and exceptionally tasty! The nachos starter is delicious and perfect to have with your drink (and to share). Can't wait to sample all the other dishes on the menu! The new chef is great and the food is great too!

lovely pub but my only complaint is that legaly when a drink has been served that drink must be supplied to the recipient no matter what the time is and in the case of my visit i bought a drink near closing time and as soon as I bought that drink it was taken of me which is not just illegal but also unfair so for this reason I can not recommend this establishment at all

£26.50 for a day pass, although asked for £30 which includes donation. Our party was made up of 5 adults - we didn’t donate. To put into context, my husband and I have been members of Marwell in our days before our children. It holds a special place in our hearts. We moved away but always managed to make at least 2 visits a year as the children grew up & still do - the kids are now into their 20’s and often visit with us. Sadly the experience over the last 10 -15 years has progressively gotten worse. Every time we go we hope it will be better. Marwell was always at the forefront of conservation and education & had an extremely successful breeding program for the rhinos and giraffes. Much money has been spent on enclosures that didn’t work, the snow leopards, the cheeta, the walkway over the persian leopard, now cloud leopard, the new tropical house, the gibbon enclosure, kids play areas. Now it is a shell. Few animals, lots of paddocks full of weeds, & plastic bottles & little or no information. The annual membership is a steal but place feels more of a kiddies play area than a serious home for conservation and education. It’s expensive and disappointing. Bit on context - The Cotswold Wildlife Park is £19 for an adult. A much smaller facility but full of animals and information & staff happy to help and answer questions.

This pub proclaim on their very own website to be a ‘friendly local pub’, ‘families welcome’, ‘friendly publicans’, ‘where community comes together’, ‘you’ll feel part of the family’…which is quite frankly outrageous given our two experiences here. On the first occasion my little boy became upset in the pub (over something i cant remember- but hes 4, so standard 4yo behaviour which lasted only a minute or two). And when i came back in from the garden, I heard them laughing and one member of staff said ‘hes a brat, and his mother just cant control him which isnt my problem’. Then (heaven knows why we went back) - my friends little boy cut his cheek on the side of a bench in the beer garden - they refused to give us any first aid or call a taxi for A&E, let alone any empathy or basic duty of care. When my husband challenged the manager (Ade) and he said to us ‘if i had my way id make this an adults only pub so we dont have to deal with these nightmare kids’. I could not believe how cruel and uncaring the people working here could be. A little boy had hurt himself and they couldn’t have cared less- but more than that- they were hostile, unhelpful and offensive about the whole thing. Despite it being our local, we have not returned- and we will not be.

Came in for some drinks with friends- the women wouldn’t leave us alone the whole night. Watched us on the CCTV when we weren’t doing anything wrong and asked us to leave when we had bought lots of drinks. The food is sub par and the drinks extortionate . There are so many better pubs in Winchester so go to them.

My wife and I found ourselves at the Cricketers Inn having tried a couple of closer pubs which had stopped serving food at 3pm (totally understandable but we had a lot on and we're running late and hungry!). We're glad we did. We received a warm welcome and a great lunch. 2 courses and some drinks came to just under £50 which I'm not going complain about. The food came out nice and quick, fresh and roasting hot. It was delicious, hats off to the chef. My wife had a chicken burger and I had a stir fry, both went down well. I'd recommend a visit, I'm a little disappointed that we didn't have the kids with us as the play area looked like it would have kept them occupied! Well done.
