We were a group of 4. Our first booking had to be cancelled due to covid but we re-booked to the following week with no problems at all. On arrival we were sat at the front of the restaurant which was very loud due to the acoustics of the room and was playing havoc with my husband's hearing aids so we asked if we could move to the back room, which was quieter. Again this was no trouble at all and we were very grateful. Our meals were fantastic and we had a really nice evening. I would thoroughly recommend and hope to return in the future.

Lovely, quiet, small restaurant serving Chinese-Malaysian food. The owner, Chung, is a charming fellow. Proper linen serviettes, chop sticks as standard (but a plate and spoon and fork are no bother). Try the Char Siu roast pork, its to die for! And the Kung po chicken is done to a real Malaysian recipe, not nasty battered chicken in sweet chili sauce!

Love, love, love Mr. So. I must have been 7 or 8 times by now and it's by far some of the tastiest Asian food I've had in the UK. The menu is very varied and the portion sizes are very generous. I love the Thousand Island Prawn dish. It's very good value for money and the service is always exceptional.

Fancied a chinese meal whilst staying in Winchester. We liked the look of the menu. However we found the food to be bland and service poor. The waiter who served us was not at all friendly and welcoming. Bad experience.

Went to Mr So on a Sunday evening. Servers were lovely but sadly food, although served very hot, tasted as though it had been heated up in a microwave with no taste. Very sad as last meal, several years ago, was absolutely delicious. Felt it was expensive for what we received.

We had a fantastic dinner just befobe Christmas at Mr So. The food was very tasty and traditional especially kong bao chicken and chilli beef.

Worst Chinese ever. Salty and very small portions…absolutely rip off. I strongly suggest you do not waste your money for the quality and quantity of food there.

Very hostile and threatening experience from the owner. I placed a to go order in which the duck was saturated in brown sauce and very little duck and the other dishes we ordered were absolutely un eatable. When I phone to express my concerns, he started yelling at me and stated "Customers are not always right." And slammed the phone in my face. We packed up our order to return and he was so hostile and and threatening towards me while yelling and screaming at me. On several occasion, he told me to SHUT UP!! I could not believe what I was experiencing. All I wanted was my money back. It was very disappointing as I have dined at this restaurant over the past 10 years and have never been treated as such. It got so bad that I had to phone my partner to come in to witness this behavior. I will not recommend this place to anyone. I suggest that the owner take some time off or close all together as the food and service is terrible

Visited tonight as Winchester was busy with Xmas activity. One of a few restaurants who had availability?..(could have been a sign!..) Food overall was OK We were served by 2 young members of staff. The young man was very attentive as was she. However, the young man, shortly after serving our drinks stormed out, followed by the young lady. Some minutes later the young lady returned, rushed to the back of the restaurant, was seen gesturing and talking to the owner then grabbed her coat and also left. On her way out my friend asked her what had happened. It transpires the boy was just sacked for giving the wrong food to the wrong table! (Really..is that a sackable offence?..surely some better training and support would have been a more positive option). The young lady told the owner he made the young man (who turned out to be her brother) cry. To which the owner said "I don't give a f@#"*?g s!*t" which lead to her also leaving (as you would). She remarked to my friend as she left "last week he threw crockery at me" This was over heard buy another table of guests also who conformed it outside as we left the restaurant together. We left concerned for the young man and disgusted at the way in which the event played out. Ironically there was a sign at the door advertising for staff!! Not a good memory to be left with and will certainly be telling anyone who asks for a Chinese restaurant NOT to visit Mr SO....or at least check out the reviews 1st. And the owner needs to seriously question his understanding of basic human courtesy and respect....or he will need to get that vacancy sign made of something a bit more permanent...

My wife and I are visiting Winchester for the Christmas market for two days. Tonight we ate at Mr So as I am a massive fan of Chinese cuisine. I’d read the reviews in Trip-advisor which are a little variable but given its accessible location and menu kept an open mind and booked a table. we were first through the door but during the course of a Tuesday evening five more tanles filled including a Chinese couple, which I always take as a positive sign in a Chinese restaurant. We started with mixed starters comprising if spring rolls, ribs in a sauce and butterfly prawns which were good. We then had a quarter of duck with pancakes. We finished with egg fried rice, mixed veg, crispy beef and black bean chicken, all were delicious. The service was very good and attentive. The restaurant doesn’t have a lot of atmosphere but this is made up ny the excellent food and an extensive menu at reasonable prices. My only suggestion would be for tablecloths on the table to add warmth.

I have visited Mr So many times before, but it had been some years since I last attended. I visited with family and was pleased to find it continues to be a quality restaurant for Chinese food in Winchester. I opted for the mixed vegetables with cashew nuts, accompanied by egg fried rice and a side of vegetable spring rolls, somehow managing to make room for apple fritter and ice cream afterwards. The flavours were excellent and we all left very full. The menu, while not extensive for my vegetarian tastes, showcased a careful selection of dishes prepared very well. Staff were attentive, the price was reasonable and I have no doubt I shall return.

What a great discovery. Wanted to have our Friday dinner away from the hotel where we were staying, so found and booked Mr So online. Got a very quick email confirmation of booking. The atmosphere at the restaurant is very nice and welcoming, the staff were very friendly and provided very good service, and the food is probably amongst the best Chinese food I have had, really fresh and tasty. Quite simply excellent, will certainly visit again next time we are in Winchester.

Very disappointing. Food was ok, but the service was absolutely awful and there was zero atmosphere. The young girl tried to make an effort but the rest of the staff made it a really unpleasant experience. We finished our main, they cleared our plates but didn’t come over again to ask is we wanted anything else. At 930 they brought us our bill without us even asking for it. Safe to say we will never go back and we will definitely not recommend it to any of our friends. Such a shame.

Clueless service from a young girl who clearly was completely out of her depth. The food was bland and indifferent. We are regulars at Mr So as love the food and service...... but last evening was shocked to find that Justin the usual head waiter and sometimes chef etc.....was missing!!! Was told he had left !!!! There were 2 young waitresses who quite honestly did not have a clue and the owner Chung was in the kitchen. It took ages trying to explain what we wanted to eat and drink and one of our party went to the bar and showed them what lime cordial was !!!! Our food was delicious as usual but the service will drive people away BRING BACK JUSTIN.

This restaurant was a conundrum. The food was very good with the exception of just 6 pancakes for 4 people with the half crispy duck. The issue here was an initial inability to deal with food allergies. The menu helpfully states let the waiting staff know about allergies. We had initially opted for a set menu which included a prawn dish. Due to a severe shellfish allergy we requested that the prawn dish be substituted with a chicken dish - this was met with a resolute no. We then went back to the menu and chose separate dishes. Again we tried to explain to the serving person that one of our party had severe shellfish, hazelnut and walnut allergies. This was clearly not understood by the server. Thankfully when mentioned to a server looking after another table the manager of the restaurant came over with the allergy menu and so the meal could be ordered safely. If rating on food alone - I would give this a 4. The initial inability of the server to comprehend the severity of the allergies could arguably take the rating to a zero, but on balance I think 3 is fair. If you have allergies request the allergy menu up front from the manager - do not rely on your server taking note and understanding.

Highly recommend. Exceptionally delicious and enjoyed by everyone! - the best Chinese food I've had in eons!

Ordered takeaway at 7.20pm received email and text Confirmation stating 1 hour delivery time, 8£ delivery fee! 8.30 pm, no food! Called to enquire, asked for discount on delivery charge, they said no and your food will not arrive until9pm! Good didn’t arrive until 9.10pm....

Good food but really slow to get starters and mains out. Seemed to be doing lots of takeaways in between. Enjoyed our meal but glad we didn’t have anywhere to be.

We went for the house special set menu, adding in stuffed lettuce leaves. Lovely fresh food. Absolutely loads of food. Only downside was the placement of our table.... opposite another table but on the main walkway in so that people, bags and buggies were constantly squashing past us. Service was good, it was busy and we had a longer than expected wait for our mains. High table turnover also meant people waiting for tables were standing around us whilst we were eating. The restaurant is fairly narrow and deep, so almost all the tablets are quite secluded. This trip, my friends sat near the door so I'd see them when I arrived, but even there the atmosphere was quiet and intimate.Starters were tasty and generous, and we shared a selection of main courses we all enjoyed.I'm not sure what the predominant cuisine is. One can certainly get Szechuan and Beijing dishes, as well as the usual Cantonese favorites.

Having not visited for years (Mr So used to be our workplace lunchtime destination of choice, 3 employers ago) we decided to pay a visit as a family for dinner. Mr So’s didn’t disappoint. Excellent service, lovely (updated!) decor and ambience, and the menu every bit as delicious as I remember - if not even more delicious.We had aromatic crispy duck, honey & sesame chicken and capital spare ribs for appetisers; chicken chow mein, honey & lemon chicken and beef with green peppers & black bean sauce for mains. Service was excellent throughout. Highly recommended.

It's quite a few years since we visited Mr So for lunch. The price of the 2 course meal has increased significantly, but the speed of service and the quality/quantity of the food is still the strong point. Our starters of soup and Spring Rolls, then Singapore Noodles (called vermicelli) and Beef in Black Bean Sauce, accompanied by a pot of Chinese Tea, hit the spot.

My daughter recently started uni in Winchester and we went here for her first night I can honestly say can’t wait to visit her again just to visit here. Best Chinese food I had in a long while. Tasty and cooked to perfection.

What a fantastic little restaurant!

I've been eating here, on and off, for over twenty years and, much as I used to enjoy it in years gone by, I would say the food here has got better. My husband and I love Chinese but there isn't a proper restaurant where we live now so we took the opportunity of being in Winchester to revisit this old haunt. We were not disappointed. The place has been redecorated and upgraded to provide a more modern setting. Service was quick and attentive. The vegetable spring rolls were better than I remembered as was the salt and pepper squid. I shared a dish of fried noodles and bean sprouts with my friend and we both enjoyed them. All in all, a happy trip down memory lane.

A small place so would recommend booking. Friendly service, hot and tasty food, the menu is quite extensive and items reasonably priced with good portion sizes - one rice or noodle dish is ample to share between two. Dim sum starters were delicious.

This evening my wife and I went for a meal here upon recommendation. The waiters were courteous and efficient. We ordered various dishes and enjoyed each one. From the mixed platter to the dumplings and the chicken curry - all were most enjoyable. I highly recommend it!

Table was booked. We arrived. We asked to be seated at a particular table which was empty but it was given to people that came after us. We waited and waited and were not even offered drinks. Several delivery drivers came through the restaurant whilst we waited for drinks or food order to be taken. After 20 minutes of being ignored, we left. There was no-one at the front of the room to tell that we were leaving or even to complain to. This took place on Saturday 8th Dec. We wrote to Mr So but had no reply about our complaint. We would not go again unless we are offered some explanation or apology.

I had a nice meal here, but my friends said there's was cold and got no satisfaction in asking for it to be reheated. I enjoyed mine. If my friend hadn't had a bad experience it would have been a higher rating.

I ordered a take away from Mr So and found the portion sizes were ridiculously small for the price paid. There was about 6 pieces of squid for £7.80!! The 2 vegetarian spring rolls looked like they should have been mini spring rolls and for £4.00 were ridiculous! The sweet and sour chicken was very fatty but had a delicious sauce. I won't be ordering from here again.

Travelled to Winchester Saturday August 11th 2018 to bring son home after Boomtown festival so after a walk around the town decided upon Mr So Chinese restaurant for our evening meal. Food was excellent in both quantity (not too much to be overfacing) and quality. Not likely to be in Winchester again but would go to Mr So's if we did. Staff were attentive and friendly, nice atmosphere. Service was good.

I've been going to Mr So for a fair few years now with varying degrees of success. Mr So changed hands approximately 7 years prior to today's visit. It's hard trying to find a reliable Chinese restaurant in the area. Having frequented the Mandarin Chef for many years, we were recently put off by a bad experience and haven't returned since. So, we decided to return to Mr So to test their set lunch menu again. I ordered a refreshing pot of jasmine tea followed by a chicken and sweetcorn soup and singapore vermicelli. All for 10 pounds. The singapore noodles are an absolute must. For dessert I ordered a filtered coffee and toffee apple and ice-cream. The ice-cream was poor but the apple crunchy. The coffee was also decent. For those who worry that the set menu portions might be small, fear not. They are ample servings. Service was attentive and friendly, the food tasty and the portions generous. I would happily return.

The two of us arrived without a reservation at about 7pm, and were shown to the only free table. The service was friendly and efficient and the air conditioning was very welcome in the middle of this extended heatwave. The food was excellent, especially the salt and pepper prawns. As we finished the restaurant was practically empty, but I suspect it fills up again later in the evening as there were lots of enquiries about tables from the pub next door. We would definitely return should we find ourselves in Winchester again.
