Went hear for my sisters wedding reception. Upstairs in a room. There was no greeting from staff with champagne as guests arrived. The bride had to keep asking the staff when any food would be ready. Very poor and unprofessional service.

Wonderful old pub and setting but the food didn’t live up to the hype. Slightly overpriced for pub food but quality lacking. Was quite disappointed from a quality and value for money perspective. Service wasn’t that great also. Go in for a beer and eat somewhere else.

We ate here twice during our stay in Bath, as we loved it so much. Elevated pub food, delicious, perfectly prepared. We love their chicken pie, their roasted tomato soup, their fish and chips, salad with Stilton cheese and walnuts, and the Sunday Roast was exceptional! First night, Amalee was our server and she was so nice, skilled, knowledgeable about the food, that her skills(and the delicious food!) influenced our decision to come back the next night for dinner. 2nd night, Shaun was our server for Sunday Roast. He was a super guy, very friendly yet professional at the same time, and was a pleasure to have as our guide through the Sunday Roast menu. The atmosphere here is very comfortable, very pub-like, loved it - both the upstairs dining room, with windows which overlook the streets and the green, as well as the downstairs pub area (where you can also be served meals). Great location in the center of the action. The man for which this pub is named, William Walker, is super interesting, basically saved the Cathedral due to his underwater diving skills in 1911 - incredible stuff!

We went to the William Walker on a warm evening in late July. The pub is also a dining restaurant, and we had wine (Prosecco) and beer (Beavertown Neckoil) with our food. The manager, Rachel, really knows her stuff about beers and breweries, and was able to guide our choices well, introducing us to new tastes and making good recommendations. Rachel was also adept at managing a noisy party in the bar area, who were beginning to be a bit of a nuisance to several of us diners—she was diplomatic but firm, which is what you want. The waiting staff were as charming as you like, and a particular mention for Shaun, who was the loveliest and most helpful person you could hope for, making sure we had everything we needed, really looking after us. The food, when it came, was tasty and satisfying and everything you would want from good pub dining—including some tasty choices for veggies and vegans. The evening was lovely as a result, and with the William Walker being situated right next to the Cathedral yard, we had a nice walk around after our meal. The whole evening was made really lovely by being treated well by the staff, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

We had a great family meal here, the staff were knowledgeable around allergies and the chef was able to adapt the meal for me, he even bought my meal to the table with a smile. Great for kids or adults only. Near to many local tourist spots. Ensure you book as it can get booked up as can most of Winchester even for a mid week lunch.

Visited this pub for the first time for lunch with some old colleagues. We are all in our mid to late 70s so proper grumpy old men, very picky and discerning. Stayed for lunch and a couple of us had the fish and chips. We all declared the best fish and chips we had ever had. The steak and ale pie was scrumptious. The place was spotless and the decor was spot on for a pub and not pretentious. Staff were helpful and attentive. Perfect location between town centre and the cathedral. 13 mins walk from railway station. Plenty of car parking nearby. What didn't we like? Actually the picky, grumpy old men couldn't actually find a fault.

Dining solo and no idea which pubs were good as I was new in town, so I appreciated the warm welcome from the young chap behind the bar as I walked in. Had a lovely table with a view out a window so I could watch the world go by. It was early evening so the pub was quiet, which I appreciated. Nice decor, and quite cosy. Delicious nachos with the beef chili, and a refreshing Aperol Spritz or two! Would visit again the next time I am in Winchester. Unbeatable location on a quiet street right by the Cathedral. My partner and I love the William Walker and have been many times, so we were excited to take our friends out to dinner, but it was not a great visit this time unfortunately.I booked the table a few days in advance for 4 people. When we arrived we were led over to a small, wobbly, round table which only had 3 chairs, not a great start. We noticed that other people in the pub just for drinks were on larger tables which would have been better suited to diners. We were the only customers having dinner in the downstairs area and feel that it would be better to seat customers having food and customers just having drinks in separate areas. We heard the staff say to a couple sat in a booth that they did not need to give up the table as they had seated the other guests elsewhere. Was this table meant for us?The music was very loud and other customers rowdy. We could not hear each other to have a conversation. People were getting up and walking around without face masks and the staff didn't even seem to notice. This happened so many times that I checked with my boyfriend that it was still a requirement to wear face coverings indoors. The customers on two tables near to us who clearly booked separately, kept moving nearer to each other and staff did not ask them to sit back at the tables. One of the members of the group was shouting at us out of the window as we left.In the ladies loos, the toilet seat was broken and the bin was overflowing with paper towels, clearly not checked for some time. The food was disappointing for the price. The Hunters Chicken is supposed to come with triple cooked chips, but the chips we received were soggy and dark and tasted like they had been re cooked in the fryer. The only good point was that the Scottish waitress was very nice and friendly and we received good service from her.We were left disappointed with our visit. I did not think that at 730pm this would be a rowdy pub. I noticed that the usual manager who is fantastic was not working that evening. We will visit the William Walker again but maybe we will stick to going at lunch time when it seems the food and atmosphere is much better.

Visited the William Walker on a Saturday evening with a couple of friends for a meal and some drinks. Service from the bar staff, Alex, Joe and a chap with a man bun hosting the place it seemed but I didn’t catch his name, was excellent and all so friendly. We had cocktails made by both Alex and Joe without any problems despite how busy they were. they all coped with the evening rush and the food was perfect and served in good time. The only downfall to the evening was being told the kitchen was closed so we weren’t able to order desserts despite it being not long after 8pm and other tables were still eating. There was a group of lads that came in later in the evening for drinks and sat in the corner. They became quite rowdy and could be heard swearing from the other side of the pub, which for a place of those standards you wouldn’t expect, however the gent with the man bun (again not sure of his name) dealt with it perfectly and politely asked them to quieting down. All in all a good evening as always and will be coming back in the future

Winchester is my home town but as I no longer live there I had not been to this pub for a long time (although used to know it well). The interior has been refurbished to a very high standard and is both contemporary and sympathetic to a historic building. The staff were wonderfully friendly and welcoming but the table service was a touch hit and miss. I ordered the Caesar salad with halloumi making clear that I was vegetarian. Karen, the Assistant Manager was lovely, really helpful and friendly. All staff we met were effecient and nice. The pub is very cold, heating on apparently, but we had to keep our coats on as well as our jumpers while we ate unfortunately. The chairs weren't particularly comfortable, very thin seats, not somewhere you would want to sit much longer than half an hour. Toilet facilities weren't great either, bit dodgy having to sit on a broken toilet seat! We had chicken satay starters, moist tasty chicken but 50% more sauce needed, some cucumber would have been good too.Kids fish and chips wasn't enjoyable. The fish still had the skin on, luckily the chips were lovely, but the peas were like bullets. Not something I would expect my child to eat. The chicken burger tasted nice but such s small piece of chicken was very disappointing, more like a child's meal than an adult portion. Maybe somewhere we would pop in to have a quick drink if in the area, but definitely not somewhere we would want to eat again.

The menu looked good and the staff were friendly, unfortunately eating there at a busy time was not a good idea. Parts of the order were forgotten; the sharing vegetable dishes were too few between too many and the service was haphazard. We knew we had to vacate the table by a certain time but the service was so slow that we had to cancel the last bits of our meal order as we would have ended up having to stand to finish them. We won't go back.

Reviews looked good but have to say was disappointed, just loath it when you have a Sunday lunch served with everything piled on a plate with a large Yorkshire puddings hiding a very average lunch , would have been nice to have a good selection of vegetables & not one carrot & a loaf of red cabbage which is not my desired option with a roast- on the plus side staff where pleasant

We popped into the William Walker looking for a location for our a Wedding Reception. Immediately we were made to feel welcome and staff member Danni went through all the options and ideas. We booked there and then. We have been kept updated and helped all through the process.

Came here as a group and had a lovely evening. The menu is not massive but the food quality was very good. We had a wonderful waitress who was helpful and quick to help. Location is absolutely incredible with a lovely view over the cathedral and very close to the centre of town.

What a surprise when you walk in the door. A lovely oldie worldview pub. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. They couldn’t do enough without being overwhelming. The food was fresh and delicious with plenty of choice.

Stopped for lunch on a Saturday. The pub is quaint but clean and a stone throw from the cathedral. It cost us £75 for 3 adults and a child with drinks. The food is pub food but very nicely made. We had burgers, with lovely touches such as mustard seeds in the beef patties, and a hot salmon salad which was divine and more than enough for a main course, which is not always the case with salads. Staff is friendly. Oh, and the loos are very clean. A great place to eat.

Booked in for Sunday lunch for group of 14, after a trip to The Bombay Sapphire Distillery Tour. Was seated in an upstairs room, which accommodated us very well! Had pre ordered as big group so just drinks order needed. Very nice server looked after us (did not get his name, but very tall had to dodge lights strung on ceiling) accommodating our sense of humour when one of the groups beer was a little delayed! Excellent food was received by everyone in the party no one had any complaints, Would definitely visit here again if in the area.

Popped into have a bar lunch before tour of Winchester Cathedral. £13 for ham hock egg and chips for my husband. I had battered cod, and that was nice. The chips were bad enough- supposedly refried but to me tasted and looked like stale chips reheated from day before. The fried eggs were not great, But the piece de scandale was the ham hock- Came as a cluster of very dried up ham bits with the texture of crisp string. Festering among this unwholesome fare was a fried mosquito. I complained loudly about the ham, as my husband would not. He hates fuss. But when he found the mosquito and showed me, I was discreet about that and mentioned it quietly to the bar manager. The meal was not charged for and they also offered us free drinks which was nice. But my husband insisted on giving the manager a £10 for his trouble.

What a happy bunch of waitresses greeted us when we arrived at the pub. What a good atmosphere it does make all the difference. We enjoyed our food of fish and chips, fish cakes and Somerset Brie and grape sandwich all served with a smile.

I’ve just been for Sunday lunch here after reading some of the reviews, and I’m so glad I did. I feel uncomfortable at times as a single woman eating out, but was made so welcome by the staff I will definitely be back. I had the roast beef which was amazing, too much for me lol, then managed to squeeze in a desert which was just as nice.

My friend and I organised a re-union for nearly 30 ex colleagues upstairs in the function room where you can enjoy a scenic view over Winchester Cathedral. The staff at the William Walker are all lovely! Very helpful, good communicators and they made it a pleasure to organise our event. Food was excellent too and a good time was had by all. Can thoroughly recommend. Thanks guys (especially Summer!) - you were all brilliant!

I was inspired to write this review by seeing a Greggs eating numpty slamming the place for price. Yeah, they're not cheap but you're paying for quality ingredients and an amazing product which is value for money. For less than a fiver you're getting a huge sweet treat with complex flavours, a very satisfying, delightfully flaky pastry and a very satisfying and filling experience. If you want a hit of sugar and bland white, air filled bread? There are cheaper options! You won't get a limp chicken pasty here. If you want extremely satisfying bread made with high quality flour and an amazing crust? If you want tasty, sweet pastries with a delicious zing? If you love good food rather than ultra processed? Then this won't bust your budget and will fill you up. The venue itself is a warehouse with some benches other branches are much nicer.

Have not been here since pre Covid. Other reviews were not so good, but we had no complaints. We were early on a Sunday morning so although quite a few people the service was not slow. The coffee was excellent, and the carrot cake jolly tasty. The toilets were very clean. For me I trod carefully on the terrace which did look a bit slippery.

Excellent as always, delicious food, reasonably priced, I wish I’d had room for a pud. Lamb shank is a treat, tender as anything with proper veg.
