This pub proclaim on their very own website to be a ‘friendly local pub’, ‘families welcome’, ‘friendly publicans’, ‘where community comes together’, ‘you’ll feel part of the family’…which is quite frankly outrageous given our two experiences here. On the first occasion my little boy became upset in the pub (over something i cant remember- but hes 4, so standard 4yo behaviour which lasted only a minute or two). And when i came back in from the garden, I heard them laughing and one member of staff said ‘hes a brat, and his mother just cant control him which isnt my problem’. Then (heaven knows why we went back) - my friends little boy cut his cheek on the side of a bench in the beer garden - they refused to give us any first aid or call a taxi for A&E, let alone any empathy or basic duty of care. When my husband challenged the manager (Ade) and he said to us ‘if i had my way id make this an adults only pub so we dont have to deal with these nightmare kids’. I could not believe how cruel and uncaring the people working here could be. A little boy had hurt himself and they couldn’t have cared less- but more than that- they were hostile, unhelpful and offensive about the whole thing. Despite it being our local, we have not returned- and we will not be.

A really top quality Sunday roast. We both had beef, the portions are very generous, with veg and cauliflower cheese on the side, all included. The owners are friendly, and the outside beer garden is lovely. 10/10 service. Not the cheapest place in town, but the delicious food and lovely pub are worth it.

Went to go in for a drink Saturday 29th June 2024 at 21.15 with family, only to be told we are shut, no reason given. The sign outside the front door states "if you can see me we are open" rubbish. Will not be returning to this venue, we had used it fairly frequently previously. My partners son & girlfriend were totally disgusted and will advise their friends of the experience

Bloody lovely pub! Called in for lunch on the way in from Salisbury, with my son, who had a rehearsal with his university band. Good food, really friendly landlord, Ade, and his partner, Sarah, who was cheffing (is that a word?) Good selection of real ales, but couldn’t partake, as I was driving. I’d happily train down from Salisbury for a few beers here and elsewhere in Winchester!

We really enjoyed the lunch, drinks and table service all whilst sat in the garden, it was a nice time. Just a bit taken back by the price, for 2 cheese burgers with fries and 2x Guinness this came to £49.. The waitress was very good and welcoming, but i cant help but feel that when the other guy settled our bill, if he charged us for the wrong table..

Couldn't face cooking, so took advantage of the free child's meal with a main meal on Tuesday evenings. The weather behaved so we sat in the spacious beer garden. The children all enjoyed their pizzas and ice cream, while we had big meaty cheese burgers and chips. Happy children, happy parents!

We came for pie night - I had chicken, hubby had steak. Both pies came with mash, peas and gravy. Pies were ok although I am sure everything had just be heated up in the microwave. Drinks were good and everything was very reasonably priced. Staff were friendly and the premises were clean. Nice, quiet ambience.

Reopened recently under new management. Delicious pizzas served in the garden. Summer music and sun umbrellas create the perfect atmosphere for a long afternoon in the garden. This feels much more special than your average pub garden. Plenty of sun umbrellas and friendly staff.

Luckily the weather was good when we went for Sunday lunch because the garden is lovely and there is no wheelchair access into the pub. I didn’t ask about access when booking because we used to go to the Roebuck before the previous management refurbed inside and out. It didn’t occur to me that a refurb would involve removing an access ramp completely. It is a legal requirement for access for everyone including wheelchair users and I shouldn’t really have to ask! We suggested that a portable ramp can be purchased such as the one The Old Vine has. Access aside, the service was excellent and the food very good. The food choices were a little restrictive with Sunday lunch primarily about roast dinners, but they were tasty.

We had a fantastic afternoon in the Roebuck having roast dinners! We were a group of 25 and booking and ordering couldn’t have been easier. Mark was very relaxed which really helps when it comes to organising so many people! He went above and beyond organising a special buffet for the kids with the most amazing sausages that the grown ups were jealous of! The roasts were great as were the puddings. I couldn’t recommend enough. If you haven’t been to the Roebuck lately go! The interiors have been bought up to date and it’s a lovely atmospheric place to be, the staff are now lovely and helpful too. The food is so competitively priced as well. Give it a go!

Unfortunately we've had a few bad experiences at The Roebuck of late, a real shame as it's local to us and the pub and gardens itself have been done up so well, it has great potential. Sadly though, not while being run by someone so rude and small-minded. We visited on Fathers day to discover they were offering a set menu at £25 per person for a BBQ buffet. For four people we were served 1 burger, half a chicken, 3 sausages and the smallest cut of steak to share. The chips were clearly old oven chips and salad was very uninspiring. The food was horribly overcooked and parts of it in-edible. A total rip off at that price! The pub was almost empty that day too, considering everywhere else was fully booked it should have been a warning sign it had so much availability! We then re-visited last night to watch the football and have some dinner. Upon arrival we were handed menus, however when we went to order at the bar we were then told all we could order was pizza! Absolutely no prior warning for this. The pub was again very quiet, only 4 tables occupied, and yet it still took 45minutes for the pizza to arrive, all of which were horrifically burnt and mainly covered with rocket and not much else! In addition to this we ordered a garlic pizza bread, initially it came out so burnt it was inedible, the second attempt didn't have any garlic on it and the third can speak for itself in the attached photo (clearly also not edible!)... The bloke who supposedly manages the place has absolutely no sense of customer service and was beyond rude to multiple members in the party. Apparently he does really well for himself and doesn't actually need our custom (his words)! I'm not usually one to write reviews, but after two such a poor experiences I felt I needed to warn others to not waste your money here, there are so many better pubs near by that deserve your money more!

Had an absolutely terrible experience here today when visiting for a Sunday roast with my wife and two young children. Just to be clear, we are not the type of family that complain. We don’t write negative reviews without good reason. The small minded attitude and simple rudeness and inconsiderate nature of the management in the Roebuck today compelled me to write this review. So my wife has Crohn’s disease. If you don’t know about it, it’s an incurable bowel disease that causes her excruciating pain if she does not eat the right things cooked the right way. She manages it well and knows what she can and cannot have. When placing the order for her chicken roast dinner today I was explicitly clear that the vegetables would need to be cooked properly extremely well. She cannot eat al dente. I explained the importance of this and her condition. They understood and took my order at the bar. Now, we’ve been here before. Places get it wrong and forget. We almost expect it. But this time because we were the first people to order and I could see the message being conveyed to the kitchen staff, I was confident they would get it right. Sadly, they didn’t. My wife was served the solid butt-end of a cabbage which was very lightly cooked, some peas (which she cannot actually eat because of the shells) and some warm but hard carrots. Personally I liked what I was served. So the quality here was not really the issue. We apologised for the inconvenience and asked for the vegetables to be replaced. As I said, we’ve been here before in many places. Sadly there is still a wide-spread lack of consideration and compassion for severe dietary restrictions. She doesn’t want or choose to be this fussy. So…. after a few minutes. Our waitress returned with the plate without carrots, all other vegetables the same. Advising us that they couldn’t do anything about it and this was how it comes. At this point I have almost finished my food. We have two restless toddlers. My wife tried to work out how they might be able to soften up her vegetables, asking how they were cooked, but the waitress didn’t know, only saying that there was nothing they could do. At this point embarrassed and not wanting to cause any further fuss decided to request a refund and said not to worry. We had paid in advance because we were sitting outside. Then several minutes later the waitress returned advising that the manager was refusing to refund as there was nothing wrong with the food. I was obviously quite shocked by this, I actually thought there must have been some confusion. But sadly when asking the manager, he again confirmed his very short sighted and horrifically inconsiderate decision. This guy decided that £12.75 for a meal that my wife didn’t get to eat was more important than our ongoing custom. I want to reiterate, we are not difficult or moany customers. I know reading these reviews it can be easy to think about how pathetic people are…. This is not the case here. It needs to be known that the manager of this establishment today completely let his colleagues and bosses down. He ruined our Sunday, I’m still furious now at the utter disrespect he showed my wife and her condition. Anyway, I sincerely hope this genuine review of a bad experience discourages others from attending. A change of management is needed.

We went here tonight having been here many times before. We booked a table and was seated relatively quickly. We placed an order for our drinks and about 5 minutes later we placed our food order. We both wanted to have the burger, however were told that there was one burger remaining, (bearing in mind this was at about 1850 so not like a late order), I changed my menu choice to the Mushroom Risotto. THEN THE WAIT! One of the young ladies serving (there were only two staff on the bar/restaurant) advised us that the chef was having a problem and she was apologetic for the delay on our food. Other people arrived, to also be told that the burger was not available, and also that they were one chef down. My husband had the burger, and paid the extra £2 to have bacon and cheese added. SOME 50 minutes later our food arrived to the table!!!! My husband was then rather taken a back by the one small piece of bacon and a small helping of melted cheese, this kind of added insult to injury given the price he was going to pay. Whilst the waitress was friendly and helpful, she was clearly embarrased, and did offer free drinks given our wait, but this came a bit too late. My husband is a serving soldier in the army and Green King as a company do offer a 20% discount, however we were told that the pub is owned by GK, but the business is private so they could not offer this. All in all we were very dissapointed with our 'fresh' visit to the establishment. The pub has been done out really nicely, that's a positive, however we found that there was a limited menu, and it was also quite pricey.

The pub has been refurbished and is lovely. The perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine on a cold Saturday November evening. It has always been a family pub in the past and, being a mum celebrating my birthday, we thought we would try it out to feed the twin toddlers and check it out at the same time. Unfortunately we were made to feel very unwelcome. I am happy to be told there is no licence after 7pm for children and I’m not too bothered at the lack of children’s food menu (the option was fish goujons - great! I’d never complain after not checking for options first). I would also usually be a little embarrassed that our coats were moved to ‘hooks’ (however, no other customers appeared to have the same treatment regarding coats on chairs). The atmosphere created around us was very uncomfortable. It could have been ignored and put down to our perception if we were not then told the twins were causing a ‘health and safety issue’ and to contain them to the high chairs (bare in mind they didn’t know upon arrival if they even had 2 highchairs and they were just sitting next to our table drinking their water) and this was 15 minutes before 7pm when we were leaving anyway due to the licence. I’ve never before experienced such a rejection towards a small family trying to enjoy some food and a birthday drink... I’ve never experienced so many rules in such a short space of time during a social outing. Nor have I ever been told that my children create a health and safety issue by drinking their water happily next to a table. I could go on and on about the niggles such as the staff straightening the cutlery on the table the children had stood next to.. the passive aggressive nature of the whole experience was really quite shocking!! Customer service rating is currently nil. As for the food, the fish goujons & the tzatziki were lovely.. the rest, nothing to rave about.

We ate lunch here and were surprised to find that the lunch portions had decreased with the prices remaining the same.Despite the food tasting fine and the quick service it was a real shame to be paying over the odds for our meal. It seems like the owners are just trying to make more money out of the customers by providing less.Additionally refurbishments now mean that there is effectively a wall around the side of the pub, making it feel much less inviting. It also means that you have to walk round rather than being able to walk in from the corner.Disappointed that it's not the place it used to be.

Everybody in our group commented on the quality of the food and service was just right, enough time for a drink and a chat before food was served.Free parking as well and in Winchester it is a real bonus to get parking let alone free, will definitely use again.

Very near, but not in, the City Centre of Winchester , The Roebuck is the kind of pub that you might overlook. And you would be the poorer for it. It is a great small well hosted pub, with a great range of food, and some really good draft beer on tap. If you are ever in the area, do give it a try, I'm sure you wont be disappointed.

There are not many places that accept dogs which offer great service, value for money and superb food. The two course lunch menu offered great choice at a great price. The Roebuck welcomes dogs in the bar area and also has a formal dining area as well as a cosy area for coffee. We will certainly visit again.

We have just enjoyed a fabulous roast beef Sunday lunch (£10) per head. Lovely slabs of meat, 2 yorkies, roast potatoes and a vegetable selection. This pub offers a down to earth heart Sunday lunch with a warm welcome, great staff, good beers and a real home cooked meal. The deserts were huge and the coffee really tasty. We wish we had discovered this place for Sunday lunch before tripping round some of the more pretentious and touristy hot spots in Winchester.Great staff, hearty and home cooked food and decent beers make this a winner in Winchester - thank you

Hard to fault this pub. Like several others, we discovered this pub because they allow motor home owners to park up for the night. The landlord could not have been more courteous and helpful. We were there on a Saturday evening and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming throughout. The menu is typical pub grub, but not in a negative way. Generous portions and excellent prices. We chose rib eye steak (special at only £10) and it was superb. Andy and Jo have created a very special place in this pub and we will absolutely be back.

We arrived at lunchtime and easily parked our Motorhome we went into have the 2 courses for £7 which is a great deal because the food was so lovely and such a friendly service too. After the meal we met the Andrew and Jo who own the pub who had just arrived back and was so helpful letting us know it was only a 10 minute walk into town and also if we needed to fill up with water and dispose of our waste we could. However we went into the pub in the evening and was just blown away as the pub had such a great atmosphere you would not have known the pub was on a main road as it felt like you was in a country pub. We was greeted at the bar by Andrew and he just treated us like we was just one of the regulars. We sat down for an evening meal and the food was absolutely spot on, the olives was nice and salty and fresh and the bread was tasty too and for the main we both had a chilli one with rice and one with nachos, The food was more than value for your money. Please don`t drive past this place without going in just to see Andrew and Jo let alone there food. Thank you to you both for our lovely time at your pub we will look forward to coming back.Alan

For an inexpensive meal in Winchester, try the Roebuck. Car parking, close to station, dog friendly, child friendly. Not gourmet, but can you complain for 2 courses at £7? Very friendly.

We stopped by this pretty pub while out in a weekend walk. This service and atmosphere were lovely- warm, cozy, shabby chic decor and a nice menu. We didn't eat there on this occasion but will be back to try a Sunday lunch soon.

I visited today with my family for a Sunday roast & kids meals before traveling away on holiday. The waitress warned us that the plates were hot and my gosh they were indeed!! In our opinion they had sat the roast beef under the hot plate or in the oven even as it was dry and could only account for the temperature of the plates. To disguise the dry meat both roasts had been drowned in a plate of gravy, served with 2 packet Yorkshire puddings (to which I found a piece of egg shell in mine)? The children had ordered child's 'Ham, Egg & Chips' and 'Lasagne' again the bowl the lasagne came in you expect to be hot, this was something else - resulting in burnt finger tips trying to remove the contents as to avoid a child being injured. The roast comes with a separate dish of veg which contained: parsnips, mashed suede, dauphinois potatoes and cheesy shredded cabbage?? Roast potatoes were cooked from a bag and sauces not offered. When paying for the bill the lady asked "How was your meal?" We pointed out the egg shell and poor quality of food being served. There was no apology and we paid and left. Safe to say we will not be returning to the Roe Buck in the future!

Went with family. Just the three of us. Pleasant staff very knowledgable on wines they had. Lovely meal, take a look at the blackboard meals for something different. Usual pub meals, lovely skin on chips. Puddings were a little disappointing but starters were good....Service very good and would recommend.

I had not eaten here for a number of years and thought I would give it a try. The meals were okay but nothing special. Dad's chips were really horrible colour and very greasy. I had ploughmans but had one slice of cucumber and a slice of tomato the rest was lettuce. Puddings were served on chipped plates and given soup spoons to eat them with. Mum's trio of fruit tarts were quite literally 3 slices of pie from a larger one.

Stayed overnight in our motorhome. Made to feel extremely welcome, especially the dogs. Some great advise for the motorhome. Nothing seemed too much trouble. Lovely food too. Only improvement would be to have fresh veg rather than cooked frozen (I always think fresh taste better).Highly recommended.

I was traveling on my own and needed a place to stay for the night. All accommodations in Winchester appeared to be fully booked. The staff immediately responded to my question and made phonecalls to find me a suitable place.Everyone helped to give me clear directions. Chapeau, as they wpould say in France, and: 'petje af' as they would say in Dutch!!! Good old fashioned service and helpfullness to a traveller!

Sunday lunch at this super welcoming pub has become an unmissable treat. Despite the fact we are not exactly big spenders, taking advantage of the very generous half price portions and usually sticking to water, the staff treat us royally. Always cheerful, friendly and full of fun they greet us like old friends. Knowing we can rely on a delicious Sunday roast and desserts to die for my Customer Loyalty Card is valued. I'm about to use the £10 voucher my cute little deer stamps has earned and would even be happy to go there on my own which I wouldn't have attempted in any other pub.

We received a wonderful welcome from the Landlord. Seeing us arrive, he came out to help us park our motorhome and explained that The Roebuck is part of the Britstop Scheme, the first we'd heard about it. Free stopovers for motorhomes in a country that really isn't very motorhome friendly (unlike the continent where campers are welcomed in most villages and towns). The Roebuck is a typical English pub, on the edge of Winchester... We ate indoors, because it was raining (yet again) but would have loved to have eaten on their terrace. The Roebuck has a lovely ambiance and great food, beautifully presented. We chose the special two course lunch for £7. Pâté and toast with salad garnish followed by roast pork with apple sauce, two big Yorkshire puddings and fresh seasonal vegetables. The nicest roast we've had in a long time. The Spanish waiter, who served us, was utterly charming.Well done to everyone!

We stopped off here to meet some friends, we decided to have dinner, it is a lovely pub and clean and lovely waiting staff. The food however was awful, so not to my taste. 2 of us had ordered the burger but it was like eating cardboard, no flavour dry and just not nice, it also came with a pickle which was not on the menu which i hate so it tasted everything it touched. It came with sweet state fries, which were also tasteless and i feel over cooked. nice idea but doesn't work. the tomato relish was lovely.

The menu is exactly what you would expect from a pub menu. All the favourites are there. We were a party of 6 and had both veggie and beef chilli, scampi, ham egg & chips and a goats cheese tart. The majority of main courses were available in smaller portions, still a good size. The full size meals were very generous. Staff were friendly and food served relatively quickly. Would be happy to go again if looking for a traditional pubmeal.

The Roebuck is the first pub we have stayed at through Britstops.com. For anyone who hasn't heard yet, Britstops locations offer free overnight stops - although it is only courtesy to eat at the pub/buy farm produce etc in return. We were made very welcome by Andrew and offering electric hook-up for the night and a re-fill of the water tank. Had a good meal with friendly service and a pleasant and quiet night's sleep. Andrew was quite happy for us to stay parked for a few hours in the morning while we walked down into Winchester and had a look at the Cathdral and the Great Hall.

We have eaten here many times over many years but our recent visit found the menu more suited to a garden centre lunch than a Saturday evening dinner. Not just no steak but no non-processed meat at all (unless you count minced beef in a lasagne). The ambience is fine, the staff pleasant and the red wine excellent, but the current menu not really suitable for evening dinner.

I travel a lot with my job and eat out three times a day most days. I can spend a week at a time on the road in my role as a property manager covering the whole south west for a multi national property management company, so finding decent, well priced, tasty food, available in a relaxing cheerful establishment which also serves great coffee, Is the highlight of my journey, the fact this place ticks all those boxes plus has a great wee outdoor smoking area and free Wi-Fi and believe it or not, a staff of mostly young ladies who genuinely appear to enjoy their job and always serve you with a smile and occasionally some wit and banter, made it one of those rear places I actually look forward to returning to. This visit I decided to go with the Gammon steak, eggs chips and pea's accompanied by a nice cold 'glass bottle' of coke (none of your cheap Pepsi on tap here thank you very much) to be followed by strawberry cheesecake and ice cream and topped off with a decent coffee and a cigarette. My hat is off to both the cook and the very polite young lady who delivered my meal (more lovely golden fluffy chips than I will ever manage lol ) with a smile and even returned a little later to express a genuine interest in my level of joy with my dining experience while delivering a coffee to die for..I could go on, as this place really has turned out to be the cure for a long hard day, but think iv'e made my opinion clear, plus I've a decadent looking dessert to attempt.. Kiwi Steve.

£26.50 for a day pass, although asked for £30 which includes donation. Our party was made up of 5 adults - we didn’t donate. To put into context, my husband and I have been members of Marwell in our days before our children. It holds a special place in our hearts. We moved away but always managed to make at least 2 visits a year as the children grew up & still do - the kids are now into their 20’s and often visit with us. Sadly the experience over the last 10 -15 years has progressively gotten worse. Every time we go we hope it will be better. Marwell was always at the forefront of conservation and education & had an extremely successful breeding program for the rhinos and giraffes. Much money has been spent on enclosures that didn’t work, the snow leopards, the cheeta, the walkway over the persian leopard, now cloud leopard, the new tropical house, the gibbon enclosure, kids play areas. Now it is a shell. Few animals, lots of paddocks full of weeds, & plastic bottles & little or no information. The annual membership is a steal but place feels more of a kiddies play area than a serious home for conservation and education. It’s expensive and disappointing. Bit on context - The Cotswold Wildlife Park is £19 for an adult. A much smaller facility but full of animals and information & staff happy to help and answer questions.

lovely pub but my only complaint is that legaly when a drink has been served that drink must be supplied to the recipient no matter what the time is and in the case of my visit i bought a drink near closing time and as soon as I bought that drink it was taken of me which is not just illegal but also unfair so for this reason I can not recommend this establishment at all

Came in for some drinks with friends- the women wouldn’t leave us alone the whole night. Watched us on the CCTV when we weren’t doing anything wrong and asked us to leave when we had bought lots of drinks. The food is sub par and the drinks extortionate . There are so many better pubs in Winchester so go to them.

My wife and I found ourselves at the Cricketers Inn having tried a couple of closer pubs which had stopped serving food at 3pm (totally understandable but we had a lot on and we're running late and hungry!). We're glad we did. We received a warm welcome and a great lunch. 2 courses and some drinks came to just under £50 which I'm not going complain about. The food came out nice and quick, fresh and roasting hot. It was delicious, hats off to the chef. My wife had a chicken burger and I had a stir fry, both went down well. I'd recommend a visit, I'm a little disappointed that we didn't have the kids with us as the play area looked like it would have kept them occupied! Well done.
