Caracoli in Winchester

Just stopped in for a birthday treat with my partner and our dog. Coffee & chai latte were fantastic! They helped me find something around my awkward allergy and nothing was too much trouble. The barista and I got distracted by my allergy and the (ong wow!) almond croissant was missed off the order but he brought it over and let us pay after which was wonderful. Will definitely be back

The cafe is good but the toilets were disgusting. I have visited the cafe 3 times recently and always the same. They are not cleaned regularly. I informed the Manager who complained about being too busy and who was very off hand. A cafe is not just about the food and drinks - if the toilets are not well maintained I wonder about the rest of it!

Fantastic offering of food and delicious coffee. A very well thought out cafe. Friendly service with a smile. What more could you ask for. Highly recommend!

Came with my son who wanted a take away coffee - service friendly - but yet another establishment that is card only - this is excluding so many people and is totally uncalled for. Please think again - why do I want to pay card for a £3 purchase? I don't!

Cycled 25miles to New Alresford and found this nice Cafe. Looked nice and food looked great but was told they didn't take cash! What is wrong with Businesses of today! Went round the corner to another lovely little cafe who did take cash.

Nice setting, friendly staff. We were in a large group and most people in the group were happy with what they received. However my toasted sandwich was soggy, which is a bit of an existential issue for a cafe selling sandwiches. It was chorizo and cheddar - seemed like they whacked it in the microwave. (Easy fix for the owners of the business - buy some toasting machines or offer them cold)

My wife and I were visiting Alresford for the day. We had mid morning brunch at Caracoli, focaccia with roasted vegetables mushrooms and cheese and a pastry and two coffees. All absolutely delicious, served in light and airy surroundings with polite and friendly staff. Our morning experience had been so positive that we decided to have tea and coffee there in the afternoon as well before going home, accompanied by a delicious chocolate caramel and peanut tart. Thank you all at Team Carcoli. We hope to be back one day!

Popped in to treat myself with a coffee in the new year and was served by a delightful girl (I think she said her name was Abi) who welcomed me in and put my morning to a great start! My coffee was delicious and the service was wonderful. I will definitely be paying another visit again soon! Thank you.

I have been coming on and off for 5 years to Caracoli and frankly it gets worse and worse. During lockdown they cut the food offering toa few fatty pastries. Then they cut back on other products. Then the manager seem to only be there very infrequently and it was left to a few perfectly nice but very young temporary staff. They plainly struggle with lack of training and supervision. Now it has been cheaply redecorated removing all charm. Needless to say the prices keep going up. It looks like the owners just aren't interested and want to extract the profits with minimal effort or investment.

Fantastic food & coffee. Stopped in for brunch & experienced great service, very friendly & quick to serve. Would definitely recommend this cafe & will be visiting again when in the area

Having been taken over by Heidi bakeries, this really nice cafe has gone downhill. There were no lovely salads as previously - many more tables and far less goods on sale. Coffee was quite good - and for first-timers, the app gave a free drink. But I might well try other cafes when I come to Alresford next time.

A fantastic cafe. The dishes are so much better than the usual run of the mill cafe fair. We come to Alresford from Southampton specifically to come here.

Sandwich was good but didnt stay long as going to an appointment. Needed a loo break. Your loos are disgusting i was wretching on opening the door. The smell was tertible. The floor was wet and looked very dirty. Seems strange as you are serving food not that far away. Something needs to be done

What has happened to the old Caracoli? It is some time since my last visit, in fact so long that I did not know that Caracoli was now part of Heidi's - and what a change since that last visit. Rather than a friendly, welcoming greeting, I was rudely told off for using a door that was for exit only, even though there was no obvious notice to that affect. Whilst the cakes all look nice, the pain aux raisin, which I had, was dry and tasteless and the coffee was mediocre at best. This place has also lost its vibrant and busy atmosphere and it has been replaced with a dull and soulless experience. I'm so disappointed that what was once a nice cafe to visit has become somewhere to avoid. There are plenty of other decent places in Alresford and I would suggest that you try one of those rather than visit here.

No table service. Quiche served with no salad and Luke warm. Glasses for drinks cheap. Lot of money for poor effort in service and food.

Seemed to have plenty of young staff - all avoiding doing much. The toilets were very dirty - the main loo was locked - with the disabled loo being filthy. Paintwork shabby ( and not in a cool "chic" way. Main restaurant walls are in...

Dirty ,Dirty Tables patio area that appear never to be cleaned ,a floor that I did not want my dog to sit on.If you go here and use the inside tables chances are you will be cleaning up after the last customer .I tried to motivate the staff into doing their job but they seemed to be on slow autopilot.This cafe has every notice relating to good covid practice all over the place but adheres to none of them in relation to cleaning etc from what I can see...I spoke to the management several weeks ago on the matter and was assured it was a one off and they would attend to the issues ,(I therefore did not leave a snotty review) went back today, same if not worse on the hygiene front hence this review.

So happy to have this cafe open - and it's a lovely place to do some work with a little bit of cafe hustle and bustle happening around you. Free wifi, lovely oat milk cappuccino, plenty of tables either facing out front towards the street...

We’ve always stopped here for coffee and croissants and during this lockdown for a takeaway as we love the coffee. But the last couple of times the coffee has been almost undrinkable! So not sure we will go again.

Popped into this busy cafe on Saturday - lucky we found a table! Coffee was first rate, with quick service and nice cakes! It was busy because it's so good!

Although the Caracoli brand still exists, both here and in Haslemere, I understand that the two cafes have now come under the Heidi Bakery cafes. I guess changes ahead are likely. Today, we had our usual enjoyable coffee pleasantly brought to our table. And it was a reasonable price too! Well done.

I have been reading through the reviews and quite honestly, I can't believe what people expect from staff. I have been in caracoli on several occasions and yes, sometimes you have to wait a while for your food or coffee. That is because the coffee has to be ground and the milk heated for each individual coffee. It is not instant coffee or made from a kettle. Also most coffee shops have two maybe three coffee dispensers so if the person in front has ordered four or five coffees for their table , then you would expect a wait. When I have been in, none of the staff have been stood talking of doing nothing. So if you don't like a wait, I would suggest that you go home and make your own.

Not as appealing as it looks. Busy rainy Sunday afternoon. Tables needed a wipe over and floors were really filthy and corner by the back window had a suspect brown puddle which had been trodden in and transferred over the floor. Surprised to find people next to us were holding a dog on their laps at the table. Food looks appealing, unfortunately it took ages to arrive and the quiches were barely luke warm and were sent back to be heated through. Drinks not hot enough. Need a manager on site

Disinterested and rude staff. On arrival we were told it would take 30 mins for coffee. We were a party of 4. Whilst the cafe appeared to be close to capacity it shouldn’t take that long for coffee. Clearly insufficient equipment and staff. This should be a better experience than the bigger brands, but I’ve never had to wait 30 mins in Costa or other independents.Our son’s girlfriend ordered, paid by contactless and then sat down with us only to be approached with the comment “You haven’t paid”. Her reply “I paid by contactless and thought it had gone through”. Staff response “Well it hasn’t”. How about “Excuse me, but it seems your payment didn’t go through. Would you mind trying again?”Drinks came before 30 mins! Great! We weren’t overly leisurely but were still asked a couple of times “Have you finished?” despite still having drinks left. Then as each of us finished, the cup and saucer were taken away. Almost snatched!Call me old fashioned but I thought the customer always comes first. Here it felt a bit like school dinners but without the housecoats.

Been here lots of times. Food and coffee always good but it is quite expensive. Nice little courtyard garden in summer.

Visited Sunday, 1st December. Ordered a toasted spinach, mozzarella and parsley pesto sandwich. For £6.95, I expected something more impressive than the two thinnest and minuscule slices of sourdough with the most meagre and tasteless filling. Absolutely awful. Needless to say, won't be going back!

I have been to Caracoli many times but haven't been in over a year since it became to expensive and had poor customer service. I went today to see if I could buy some ground coffee to make as I had run out. When I entered the store there was 1 other customer buying an item in the que but still saw 2 other members of staff behind the till who found their conversation more interesting than me. Despite making eye contact with both of them twice they ignored me. After waiting an embarrassing amount of time (at least 5 minutes) as the other member of staff struggled to find a bar code I left. I was also shocked at the prices and sizes of food and drink. It definitely reminded me why I go to Coffee #1 instead now, at least the staff acknowledge you with a smile!

Arrived at 4:20pm on Saturday 26th October with my family (2 + 2 young girls).We placed an order for drinks to have in and was told that due to them closing at 5pm that they could only serve us drinks in takeaway cups...we insisted that at least the tea should be served in a proper cup.We also ordered 4 chocolate brownies (readily available on the counter).The drinks we're served to our table in a normal time, being served in takeaway cup (excluding tea) was a bit deflating considering we consider having drinks 'in' should be more of a pleasant experience and treat for our girls.What felt for ages was the eventual arrival of the brownies, these were readily available, the cafe had very few customers, so why so long to serve (I have an idea why, please see summary below). They arrived all together in a paper bag, no napkins, so it felt like a make shift picnic and eating with our hands on the table!Also, only one toilet (disabled) working, I noted the inspection sheet on the back of the door did not have a signature for the afternoon of the day before (Friday) and not a single inspection signature for the day, Saturday...nothing!Summary, couple of young girls serving front of house obviously more interested in cleaning up (front of house and certainly not customer back of house areas...toilet!), to close up and get away when the place closes at 5pm.....Hay if your open and in business then you should provide the full service....that's what we pay for, isn't it!

Under new ownership, this coffee shop is not what it once was. You will have a wait for even a simple coffee that feels really long. However the food is really good once it arrives, though not always as hot as i would expect

Can’t believe how impressed I have been over a long period of years with this branch & the other branches I have patronised., a change of ownership has ruined the name for what it stood for.

My review is coming from someone who worked in several coffee shops and was a supervising manager who ran the staff and store of the coffee shop I worked at.

Visited for lunch today and immediately spotted it had changed since last visit. Breakfast muffins sold out well before lunch time, no fresh bread available to buy (advised on available on the weekend now). Thank goodness we didn’t order lunch as the next table were served the smallest portion of savoury flan and salad I have ever seen. The shelves were bereft of produce which I normally buy and enjoy at home. Whilst wandering around the cafe area I notice a table which had recently been vacated had left all 4 meals less than half eaten. We will not be returning which will be a loss to the town as a whole as this place used to be the main attraction with other shops benefitting from our visit.

Since new management and team have taken over albeit a little rocky start we are starting to see the hub of Alresford come alive again. The new manager is extremely helpful and efficient! The new menu boards are looking promising and the introduction of dogs allowed in is fantastic! We really want to support this wonderful cafe and hope that it continues with its friendly welcome and caring, lovely food! Well done team Caracolli Alresford! Sarah

What a nice place for a coffee. Very pleasant staff, good coffee and nice cake! Clean and tidy and not too overcrowded.

I love sitting with a cup of coffee to get work done but here I seemed to wait ages for my drink before being almost rushed out the door while the girl was trying to clean tables. The staff weren’t exactly rude but they weren’t overly friendly and there were flies on the food on the counter.. it’s a shame, I will have to go back in at another time to see if this was just a one off

This place has a great feel to it. Friendly staff tasty coffee and cakes. Nice seating area both front and back. Apparently the Farnham one closed down and assumed this type of cafe would go down a storm there?? Definitely worth a visit if in Alresford....

Used to be great coffee great food. Now everything is sold out or not in stock. Two veggies who usually find a nice breakfast there to now nothing and saturday morning they had even still run out of the rest of their breakfasts.

Went here ages ago for afternoon tea and cake so thought we'd try it again for lunch. Not the cheapest (£18 for Sausage sandwich, Quiche, small salad bowl, tea and coffee) but not bad. Sausage sandwich was pretty good, my wife's quiche was very nice apparently and we agreed the salad bowl (coleslaw and beans) was tasty.

A full bowl of mixed salad for £6.50 isn't too bad, is it? And a nice coffee to go with it made an enjoyable lunch.

I asked about Gluten and Dairy free options (food options are on a board with no information about ingredients).The staff did not know so went to ask. On return I was told there was no gluten free bread available. What bothered me the most was the dismissing attitude when delivering that news. I won’t be returning.

Sadly I have to agree with lots of the recent reviews on here. Caracoli used to be great, we’ve been visiting since it first opened and we always enjoyed our visit.

Had breakfast on my own at Caracoli early morning. Ordered a double shot cappuccino with no chocolate and a croissant with raspberry jam. £5.60? Not bad value.......

Caracoli was a place where you always knew you would have good food, service and comfortable atmosphere. Today was a complete utter disaster with two basic sandwiches, a coffee and smoothie costing £20! The sandwiches, which apart from quiche was all that was on offer due to a new chef!, were just served on two slates, no garnish, the coffee had no spoon in the saucer. After complaining, a spoon was produced and a garnish with no dressing appeared long after the first sandwich was eaten. The excuse was again, that there was a new chef and the management had told him not to dress the sandwiches! Shame to blame it all on the chef.

Called in after a long journey and ordered green toastier and coffees. Really nice, included avocado and spinach. Just what we needed. Spacious, light and airy inside.

We've been going to this place for a few years now. Always a good experience. However, we've visited 3 times in the last week only to be told that no chef was available and hence no food. Fed up and won't be returning - a new place is opening just up the road, so we're hoping for a better experience there.

Sad to see Caracoli change hands! Dirty tables, load of empty cups, staff all over the place, cold coffee, bitter coffee! You need to up your game otherwise all the regulars will be going elsewhere!

Two attempts, two fails. Terrible, bitter coffees. So bad they were undrinkable and sent back The sad demise of a once great institution. Following a steady decline, desperate new overpriced pretentious menu, overwhelmed and inexperienced new staff the end must surely soon be nigh as soon as coffee1 opens... Truly Awful.

Been coming to this cafe for number of years

I popped in today to buy a takeaway cappuccino, having been a frequent customer to Caricoli for many years. Over recent months i have sadly been unimpressed by the service. Today, there was only 1 queuing customer in front of me, so I thought i would be on my way in a few minutes. How wrong was I!! To my disbelief i waited 25 minutes for a cappuccino that was not even hot when it arrived, and there was no apology whatsoever for the wait. When i stood waiting i could see the absolute chaos of staff serving coffees to wrong tables, dirty cups everywhere, several other customers complaining about wrong orders, missing items, and some poor chap waiting half an hour for a black coffee! The place was half empty but in total shambles. What a dredful shame; the entire place needs a good clean as it appears filthy, and staff clearly need to be sent on training.

Wow - the new menu is wonderful! It's really difficult to know what my favourite is - hard to choose between the ricotta hot cakes (fluffy drop pancakes) with banana, blueberries, strawberries and maple syrup, the eggs royale (amazing hollandaise sauce), the wild mushrooms on toast with garlic butter or the sweetcorn fritters! Yum yum! Caracoli already do the best coffee but now the food offer is 'next level good'!

Lovely double shot flat white, on a very busy day for the shop at a festival event. There is an open air area in the rear.

Called in here today for drinks and we were very impressed with the quality of the coffee, the service, the cleanliness and ambience. It was greatly superior to the chain coffee shops. We didn’t eat there on this occasion but have sampled Caracoli’s food at other branches and it is first class. This cafe also has an outside seating area which looks very welcoming.

We drove all the way from the other side of Winchester to enjoy a coffee and cake here. From the outside it looked promising but as soon as we entered, our hopes were dashed. We were immediately brusquely informed that there was a 15 minute wait - and this was just for a drink, not even hot food! They seemed to be very understaffed for a bank holiday weekend. I assumed that the 15 minute wait was due to the café being completely full and wondered if we'd struggle to get a table, but upon walking round the corner, I could see that there were plenty of free tables (plus the whole outside patio area was vacant), so I am can only assume the wait was due to lack or organisation/staff. Upon ordering our coffee and cakes, we found a table and proceeded to wait for our order. And then waited some more... then our coffees arrived... but then we had at least another 10/15 minute wait for the rest of our order (having had to remind them that we were still waiting). The coffee was fine, though the cups and spoons could have been cleaner - I had given up caring by this point and complaining would have only dragged the whole thing out even further. I wish I'd waited to use the public loos too, as the café ones were not a pleasant experience - really not the level of cleanliness you'd expect there! In summary, there is a lot of potential to be great, but Caracoli massively lets themselves down on customer service and cleanliness. The prices are not cheap, so I came away feeling a bit cheated and will be unlikely to return in a hurry.

The cafe was quite busy when we arrived and this seemed to overpower their systems. Almost all the customers we observed, including ourselves, had to wait for along time for their order to arrive and then when it did there were items missing or wrong.

The food was tasty and presented very nicely; however the waitress who served me and my husband was incredibly rude. She was very young so I assume she hasn’t been there long but service was slow and she rolled her eyes at our requests. Pleasant atmosphere but I’m afraid our evening was dampened.

If you fancy a silky smooth coffee, head for caracoli. I always go there if I m around alresford. Their light to medium roast coffee is very good if you fancy your coffee smooth rather than very strong / possibly bitter.

We had a coffee yesterday in Caracoli, the coffee was not as warm as it should be and the walls by our table were filthy. I used the toilet, which was the disabled one as the other one was out of order and it was absolutely filthy. the walls, floors hadn't been cleaned for ages. I couldn't believe how a café like that could have such dirty toilets. The waitress had a dirty apron and her tray was equally as dirty. The only positive thing was the carrot cake! Such a shame

Used to be good, if expensive, now seems to be declining consistently in terms of quality, and service. No reply to my direct email after 3 days so here I am on TripAdvisor, still trying to provde positive feedback, but with a dose of reality thrown in. My friends and I have been customers often several times a week for the past few years, so when the regulars start noticing, it should be a warning sign. The toilet has been out of order for seversl days (just a bulb?). Remaining disabled toilet very dirty, unsurprisingly, with queues. Never anything I want to eat. What happened to the Raisin Danishes? Awful brick hard when toasted sourdough "pigwitch" stupidly expensive for a bacon sandwich. Run out of ice, so no iced lattes several days ina row on the first hot Easter day of 4 - "we buy it our ice and everywhere's out" - no sh1t Sherlock - buy an ice machine or fridge with a dispenser. Sat outside only tolisten to other customer discussing the same complaints. Gosh, keep this up and when Barclays is open your business will fall off the edge of a cliff. We are now trying all the competition. Good luck in trying to re-raise the standards, we really do wish you well.

Was once the best place for coffee in alresford but now sadly the absolute worst. Indifferent staff and really limited food choices. After 6 years as a loyal customer I will no longer be frequenting this establishment.

After being told the card machine not working, got cash out. Ordered an Americano and a warmed croissant Paid for these, received the coffee and then joined by my wife and ordered and paid for a cappuccino for her. Her coffee arrives but still no sign of my croissant. By then about forty minutes had passed and we had to get back home and so asked the staff if they would kindly refund the croissant. Spent the next twenty minutes saying they didn't know if they could do this and so we eventually said forget it and left. So it was bad service followed by poor customer satisfaction!!! Really gone down hill!!

We used to really enjoy going to Caracoli as it had the best coffee for miles around, but today was a real disappointment. Nearly £18 for two lattes, a round of toast, a bacon sandwich and a chocolate croissant! The toast was burnt, with a miserable amount of butter and the bacon sandwich was bland and also had rock hard bread toasted until it was scorched. Thank goodness for the brown sauce to add some flavour.

It’s never great but a recent visit just reminded me I only go as nothing else open on a Sunday early for a coffee. The staff are not great and the management can not have a clue. 30 minute wait for a pretty bad bacon sandwich and coffee. No apology.

£5.95 for something they called a pigswich or something ...great bacon , but the bread was toasted and you could have broken your teeth on it....such rock hard crusts. One was supposed to have sauce...it didn’t. I asked for some bread because we hadn’t asked for it toasted...that took ages and the counter girl gave a terrible, insincere apology.

We had terrific cappuccinos here and wonder ham/cheese sandwiches. The wait staff were very helpful. A great village cafe to hang out in.

The coffee is just so good!!! Staff always smiling and laughing which makes for a great atmosphere. My favourite little spot when i am in Alresford!

Very expensive coffee shop with a poor offering of menu. Beautiful store with lovely things to buy but in the coffee shop area, always need a clean, food so expensive for what it is, so over rated and to be served by inexperienced people who have no idea on customer service then really over priced.

Great selection of cakes and snacks, nice interior, good service. Plenty of seating space. Prices not cheap but the quality is excellent

Caracoli is a most enjoyable coffee shop to visit; the service was really good today, the coffee excellent. The only tiny complaint was that the wi-fi was slow!

This place is a real emperor's new clothes affair. The service is hilarious, totally disengaged staff with no training, standing around trying hard not to look at their phones. It is worth a visit just to watch how shambolic it is as the staff can't quite bring themselves to be polite as working in a cafe is way beneath them, they obviously think, brilliant. The main clientele do not care of course as they are busy feeding their screaming kids artisan toast and the like!! The food matches the service so even if you could turn off your ears and eyes it is still not worth a visit. But they seem to do well, but you have been warned, unless you have a million kids and don't like good food and service stay away!

Coffee was a little on the cold side, service has improved. Menu is limited. It is very popular with Mum's and Children. Has a nice court yard at the back.

Stopped off for a drink and bite to eat on our visit to pretty Alresford. We like to support independent shops and took a table outside as it was a warm autumnal day. I ordered a tea and a slice of cake and my husband had a coffee and a toastie. My cake was lovely but cost £2.95 for a tiny slice. The toastie was £5 and also tiny. Now we do appreciate quality over quantity but this was ridiculous and had we known, we would’ve just had drinks.

I posted a one star review before as the wifi was flaky. This time the wifi is EVEN WORSE. The wireless signal is way way to weak to connect from the customer area. What is even WORSE than before is that the network is now insecure i.e. not encrypted. The ATM in the bank was down and I wanted to top up my mobile phone. Even if I was able to connect I would NOT be willing to do so as it would mean somebody else in Caracoli with a small amount of IT knowledge could spy on my Bank details. Come on Caracoli owners/managers PLEASE PLEASE employ somebody to purchase a decent router, implement a system which is at least encrypted and have somebody check the system with a wireless survey - signed customer with 40+ years in IT ( now retired )

The place to stop for coffee is cosy Alresford. Counter service with light snacks, and a nice array of deli goods / gifts to browse. Unisex loo not great....

Second visit to this company and it Perfectly cooked and presented it good to have quality food and the coffee is out of this world so quick as well found my new favourite company

We popped in here Saturday for a sandwich. The service was fine and we weren’t waiting long. However when the food arrived it did seem to be quite overpriced for what we received. My partner had a bacon sandwich which was on two small pieces of sourdough with three streaks of bacon, which were so hard and over cooked. There was nothing else on the bread but it was served with a bottle of brown sauce on slate. This seemed really disappointing for £6. My ham and cheese sandwich was tasty but again small for the price and with just a few pieces of lettuce on the side. Sadly we won’t be visiting again.

The coffee was excellent and we were very happy with it n the occasions we were lucky enough to be here when they wee open. Didn't try the food, although it looked delicious- but it was very busy with patrons on the weekend who looked like regulars. The retail items seemed very pricey to me but it was fun to browse!

I have raved about this place in previous reviews, but my last few visits have been less than great. I don't think I am the only person who feels this way as there seems to be loads of free tables at peak times these days.
