The service was very good, all staff were smiling and happy, The food is good home cooked food which suited by father, liver, bacon gravy and mash, the chicken and leek pie was stuffed with chicken but light on the leek! All came with a good selection of vegetables.

We phoned at 10:30am to make a reservation which was accepted for a 1pm booking. We duly arrived at 1pm. Shown to table No 12 no problem. Ordered drinks and on arrival of drinks we ordered our Sunday Roast Lunch. My wife and I chatted and then realized that it was 2pm and still no food. We ordered another round of drinks. The Restaurant was not full. At 2:15pm, my wife and I cancelled our meal booking. This was accepted without any real apology and payment for drinks accepted. We are local from Wickham but this kind of service is unacceptable. The Pub Garden was obviously busy but don't forget your Restaurant clients

Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend. The staff were lovely. We had to send my mum's roast dinner back as it was cold. I had a meal from the specials board. I had very little BBQ chicken, and the flat bread was rock hard. My husband also had a meal from the specials board. He said it was mediocre. We wouldn't eat there again.

This was previously one of our favourite lunch spots, always had to book as so popular. 6 of us went today, having booked, no table reserved. Staff lackasdaisical and food a surprising disappointment, most portions noticabley smaller, one was a child size! Had to chase staff for drinks and many deserts off the menu. When plates cleared away no asking "how was it?" fortunately for them as we would have told them honestly! A shame, that's 6 regular customers they've lost today.

Haven't been for 12 years, won't be going ever again, there are far more quality restaurants for £70.00 a couple !!!! Wise man says - 'if you can get a table on a Saturday night without notice, stay clear', the old adage was definitely spot on here. Limited menu, out of stock of steak, nothing interesting there, I didn't come out to have fish & chips, looked at the 'special' board, nothing exiting there, then somebody said, 'we have one steak in the kitchen', I soon found out why! I asked what steak it was, the person attending had to go in the kitchen to ask, I then asked what weight it was, she didn't know, and said she couldn't tell me to which I responded 'then you you can't sell it'. Again she took a trip into the kitchen and advised me it was 8 oz, fine, I then asked the price as I didn't want any surprises at the till, again totally clueless. Eventually I was told it was rib-eye and £21.00, apart from clearly expressing my steak to be medium to well done it arrived looking like it had been thrown on my plate from the other side of the kitchen, rare, exposing a large piece of gristle right through the middle! I finally managed to get the attention of someone behind the bar who came to the table and said it was rare to medium as asked!! They couldn't exchange it as they had no more steaks, so I had to accept it being re cooked. It came back cremated and was as rock hard as the stuff they use at Timpson's to re sole your shoes. This bye the way was the same person who took the starter order where I ordered a prawn cocktail, what arrived was a few prawns and crayfish tales on a side plate as a salad, I thought, whatever, until I saw a prawn cocktail being walked passed my table . The meal presentation itself was the worst in living memory , a few large chunky chips that were far too dry, x6 small button mushrooms, and what was left of half a tomato, the cress was far from fresh and sticking to my plate - oh yes, and throw a steak on top from the other side of the kitchen. The best it can be described is as if the plate fell on the floor and the food just thrown back on the plate. Silly me, desperate to fill the copious amount of vacant space on my plate, I ordered a side dish of onion rings! What arrived was a large soup bowl size dish with what I assumed was genetically modified onion rings. They were huge, and plenty of them, I could only eat three of the seven on the dish, totally pointless, I simply expected a few traditional onion rings - they couldn't even get that right - there was enough there for a table of four, not cheap either. All I can say is, to those who rate this place - you really need to get out more.

Had an enjoyable evening here but there was a very noisy table with unruly kids running about which somewhat spoilt the atmosphere., why do people have to be so loud!! The food was good and overall it was a good evening but there is always one table that has to spoil it for everyone else.

As a group we had pre booked our table and were expected. It took a member of staff 30 minutes to take our order after enquiring at the bar about how to order. It took a further 45 minutes to receive our food. One member of our group had to cancel their order as they didn’t have time to wait any longer. When the food did arrive it was mixed quality. The fried food was hot and good. The roast was also appreciated. However the fish dishes were tepid and vegetables (including boiled potatoes) were undercooked. Very disappointing. We will not be returning.

So, first off this is a beautiful pub in a fantastic location. I visit here frequently and see the staff run off their feet trying to keep on top of things and provide a good service. We visited today for a birthday sunday lunch and pre-booked. There were numerous minor issues and quite a delay on food, Which in when it arrived was very good. I spoke to the manager before my in-laws could to try and quell any issues. The manager was professional and understanding and dealt with the feedback well. No where is perfect and we need to support local buisness. I imagine it must be hard to run a rural pub and trying to hire/keep staff. Will continue to visit.

Had a lovely roast yesterday, very tasty, staff were attentive. My only criticism would be the puddings aren't worthy of eating. They were bought in and tasteless for £6.95 each. Come on Horse and Jockey don't let yourselves down, up the standards of pudding to your roast. People want homemade for that price.

A cosy and attractive pub with a lovely atmosphere. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Lots of choice on the menu plus a specials board. It wasn’t particularly busy but we had to wait a very long time for our meals. However when it arrived it was delicious and plentiful and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The dessert menu was a little disappointing, not enough traditional puddings just a peach and apple crumble. I would recommend eating here and we will definitely visit again but just give yourself plenty of time.

My recent visit to this restaurant left me thoroughly disappointed. The noise level was unbearable, with loud individuals making it impossible to enjoy a peaceful meal. To add to the frustration, the restaurant was clearly understaffed, leading to slow service. Worst of all, several items from the menu had run out, leaving limited choices. Not a pleasant dining experience, and I won't be returning.

Have eaten here before and have to say it would not have been my first choice but convenient to try it again with the family, three of which were children. The bar was loud and noisy with what can only be described as drunks, shouting, swearing and being thoroughly obnoxious. Not good when you have children with you. None of the bar staff made any attempt to ask them to tone it down. When we were leaving one of these individuals was so drunk, throwing up in the car park and got in his van driving off towards Denmead. It was disgusting. The food was disappointing, I don’t consider 10 small prawns made up with chopped up salad makes a prawn cocktail. Certainly not value for money. Having said that I have to say the waiting staff were efficient and helpful. Won’t be going back.

Well we don’t go out much these days due to the cost of living issues, but when family come we always book the Horse and Jockey because we know they will have a great variety of Sunday roasts to choose from. However, I always choose the Ribs and Wings they are to die for. A bit messy but never disappointing. The wife always goes for the beef Sunday roast with a good variety of vegetables and the gravy boat. We have never been disappointed, we also like the Pekin Duck Salad absolutely fabulous. Sundays are always busy, you must book. Steve the proprietor is very friendly and likes to joke around now and again. He always has time for all his customers, and will speak to all. He’ll be out there delivering the food and collecting the plates, always busy. There is plenty of parking although the car park gets full there is a field to the right of the premises for overflow guest which is safe. We can’t fault anything the Horse and Jockey do for us. They are dog friendly only in the bar but there is plenty of room. The Restaurant is carefully laid out and quite original, the young staff create a great atmosphere as they are always busy attending to people’s needs. Try the Horse and Jockey you won’t be disappointed.

We phoned ahead and booked a table. On arrival we ordered our drinks and a table was pointed out to us. I had to clear colouring in sheets and pencils. The waitress took our order and we sat and drank our drinks, I went to the bar and ordered our second drinks and the young lady behind the bar asked if we had ordered our food because our chit had no food on it. She asked what we had ordered and then went to the kitchen to check. On her return we asked if the order had been lost which she said no. Our food took over 1 hour and 15 minutes to arrive which was nicely cooked. If they had said they had lost our order and not inform us it takes over an hour to prepare and cook a pie we could have excepted the delay. Will not be going back.

Not understanding why there so many positive reviews. We went out for our Dad's birthday yesterday 25th April. When we got there they didn't have our reservation down, then found out they did had it down, but as a table for 3 not two tables one for six and one for 3, as requested. We were put in the lower garden and had to wait ages to be seated. Once seated my son and partner ordered ribs, the waitress came back to say no ribs, so they both went for Steak, waitress came back again, sorry no steak. So they reluctantly ordered roast like the rest of us, over an hour later , nothing, no apology. We asked for the bill and left, the waitresses couldn't wait to see the back of us. I felt it was pure greed yesterday, I understand the industry as money to recover, but staff have a serious attitude problem. My dad's birthday totally spoilt. AVOID!! Couple of tips for the pub let the waitress know what is off the menu and let all of your customers how long the they should expect to wait for a meal, it's not rocket science

A little bit of a wait for food but well worth it as the food is clearly all home cooked you don’t expect it to be instant. Starters arrived in good time and the scotch egg and duck salad delicious. The crayfish linguine to die for and steak cooked to perfection. The food was worthy of a top class restaurant. Covid secure and staff amazing. After almost waiting for an hour we still hadn’t had our order taken so I approached two waitresses who were extremely frosty and stated that food was not being served in the lower garden – why therefore were we seated there and given menus? We then moved up – very reluctantly by the waitresses to the warmer under cover area. This all seemed quite an inconvenience for the waitresses. Our food order was taken and we asked for a small starter of bread to try and keep our boys from completely melting down – after waiting for quite some time – with others arriving after us and receiving their starters we decided it was time to leave. Suddenly, after stating we would leave the children’s meals were fast tracked and our boys were able to eat – but the adult meals were cancelled. So we ended up cooking when we got back home which completely defeated the object of eating out.It was very odd to us that everybody else around us seemed to be receiving food except us. Whilst I do appreciate the extremely testing times that the hospitality sector has faced I did feel the need to write in, in the hope that maybe you can look at how to reduce the numbers of people you accept, so not to compromise service in future.

Friendly staff but food was very basic. Everything seemed to be straight from the freezer and unfortunately was pretty disappointing in terms of appearance and taste. It’s not like the menu is particularly cheap either so you would expect a bit more. Staff were polite, attentive and friendly though.

Had a lovely meal here for my mum’s birthday back before Covid reared it’s ugly head! It was a lovely evening, I hope Covid hasn’t caused too many issues for this lovely place. Would be nice to be able to come again when in the area in the future.

Fantastic pub, gradually getting back on its feet, whilst doing a lot of remedial work which had been neglected by previous Landlord as he lost Interest. What a breath of fresh Air. The ambient lighting suites the pub, the stream/river flows well and there is a large garden. Food excellent especially sticky Ribs.

We visited the Horse and Jockey yesterday for Sunday lunch, having visited for the first time a few weeks ago. The staff were extremely considerate when we requested to sit outside despite the weather, and made sure we had everything we needed. They really went above and beyond - even giving us blankets and a walkie talkie so we could order drinks! The food was delicious and the play area was perfect for our little boy. We will definitely be visiting again when circumstances allow.

Was looking for a location for afternoon tea that stayed open past 4pm. Had often eaten in the pub and had excellent meals and luckily remembered they had just started afternoon tea. The service was impeccable. The food was delicious and plentiful with a lovely mix of beautiful fresh fruit to decorate, which was a lovely touch. I don’t normally rave about the sandwiches on an afternoon tea but these were definitely a cut above. Brilliant value for money. It was definitely a great choice. All served in front of a lovely log fire.

Visited Saturday evening for dinner. No complaints about the food but let down by the service. After waiting half an hour, we had to go to the bar to remind staff to take our order. It was then a further half an hour before we saw our starter. Other tables occupied after we arrived were eating before we got our food. A shame because I would be reluctant to eat there again.I would also say that the tables were not spaced 2 metres apart and they were all occupied.

Wow! Just fantastic food, fresh ingridience exquisitely executed!!! The crayfish and prawn starter is to die for! I had the lamb shank as a main, the shank was superb fell off the bone and really meaty. A big well done to front of house team very courteous, friendly and nothing was to much trouble. The ambiance in the pub was very relaxing with a wonderful log fire burning away Good range of real ales to boot!!!! Couldn't recommend this pub high enough, with great staff, restaurant quality food and a fantastic relaxing atmosphere.... Well done the landlord!!

Amazing pub altogether! Lovely pub, huge garden children friendly, lovely staff, insanely lush food and not to pricey!!! We go here so often now they are very family friendly. We had 3 tables booked for a family members birthday and they made it so special even with all the Covid restrictions and remained very Covid safe! We will be back again soon

Generally I only get an annual visit to the H&J in May, but that was missed this year. Fortunately I've been able to have an evening meal here in September and it's every bit as good as I'd hoped it would be. Excellent food - no, really, it is - and spot-on service. Try anything and everything on the menu, it's all home-made and all devine. My personal repeat favourite here is the steak and kidney pudding as it's a proper pudding with plenty of kidney.Diet? Pah!

A group of us visited the Horse and Jockey this week. It was our first night out since lockdown and we were all a little apprehensive of what to expect. There was no need to worry. The tables were well spaced out, there was hand sanitiser everywhere. We placed our orders and the starters arrived. I had prawns and smoked salmon, which was excellent. A large plateful - very enjoyable. The main course was the Steak and Ale Pie. Again, an excellent meal. My only gripe is that I was too full up for dessert. The service was good, the staff were friendly and efficient. I hadn't visited the Horse and Jockey for many years, but will be using the pub a lot more in the future. Thank you Horse and Jockey.

lovely pub but my only complaint is that legaly when a drink has been served that drink must be supplied to the recipient no matter what the time is and in the case of my visit i bought a drink near closing time and as soon as I bought that drink it was taken of me which is not just illegal but also unfair so for this reason I can not recommend this establishment at all

£26.50 for a day pass, although asked for £30 which includes donation. Our party was made up of 5 adults - we didn’t donate. To put into context, my husband and I have been members of Marwell in our days before our children. It holds a special place in our hearts. We moved away but always managed to make at least 2 visits a year as the children grew up & still do - the kids are now into their 20’s and often visit with us. Sadly the experience over the last 10 -15 years has progressively gotten worse. Every time we go we hope it will be better. Marwell was always at the forefront of conservation and education & had an extremely successful breeding program for the rhinos and giraffes. Much money has been spent on enclosures that didn’t work, the snow leopards, the cheeta, the walkway over the persian leopard, now cloud leopard, the new tropical house, the gibbon enclosure, kids play areas. Now it is a shell. Few animals, lots of paddocks full of weeds, & plastic bottles & little or no information. The annual membership is a steal but place feels more of a kiddies play area than a serious home for conservation and education. It’s expensive and disappointing. Bit on context - The Cotswold Wildlife Park is £19 for an adult. A much smaller facility but full of animals and information & staff happy to help and answer questions.

This pub proclaim on their very own website to be a ‘friendly local pub’, ‘families welcome’, ‘friendly publicans’, ‘where community comes together’, ‘you’ll feel part of the family’…which is quite frankly outrageous given our two experiences here. On the first occasion my little boy became upset in the pub (over something i cant remember- but hes 4, so standard 4yo behaviour which lasted only a minute or two). And when i came back in from the garden, I heard them laughing and one member of staff said ‘hes a brat, and his mother just cant control him which isnt my problem’. Then (heaven knows why we went back) - my friends little boy cut his cheek on the side of a bench in the beer garden - they refused to give us any first aid or call a taxi for A&E, let alone any empathy or basic duty of care. When my husband challenged the manager (Ade) and he said to us ‘if i had my way id make this an adults only pub so we dont have to deal with these nightmare kids’. I could not believe how cruel and uncaring the people working here could be. A little boy had hurt himself and they couldn’t have cared less- but more than that- they were hostile, unhelpful and offensive about the whole thing. Despite it being our local, we have not returned- and we will not be.

Came in for some drinks with friends- the women wouldn’t leave us alone the whole night. Watched us on the CCTV when we weren’t doing anything wrong and asked us to leave when we had bought lots of drinks. The food is sub par and the drinks extortionate . There are so many better pubs in Winchester so go to them.

My wife and I found ourselves at the Cricketers Inn having tried a couple of closer pubs which had stopped serving food at 3pm (totally understandable but we had a lot on and we're running late and hungry!). We're glad we did. We received a warm welcome and a great lunch. 2 courses and some drinks came to just under £50 which I'm not going complain about. The food came out nice and quick, fresh and roasting hot. It was delicious, hats off to the chef. My wife had a chicken burger and I had a stir fry, both went down well. I'd recommend a visit, I'm a little disappointed that we didn't have the kids with us as the play area looked like it would have kept them occupied! Well done.
