A pub with an absolutely lovely atmosphere in the centre of the beautiful Whitstable.
The pub is authentic with a cozy feel and has plenty of board games on offer that everyone was getting into, making for a lovely vibe. The staff were friendly and attentive and the drinks on offer were lovely too. Felt like a warm, friendly inn with welcoming lights and friendliness after a busy day.
Definitely stop off here if you visit the town.
Went last night for a lovely family meal. The service was amazing, staff very knowledgeable & food was lovely. We have called in several times for a pint, our first time for a meal there. Good village pub.

We visited on Sunday 25th May, lunch time. A table for 3. Will and Ben served us. Will recommended the Seabass, which I ordered and it was delicious. Will and Ben were friendly, professional and engaging. A credit to the The Oyster Bed. Will always come back, we love this place. All staff are welcoming and professional . What is important for us is that the food is hot when served and it was.
we made the 140 mile trip to Whitstable on a recommendation from a well know train enthusiast & ex politician. we booked months in advance. We understood this restaurant had1 Michelin star, Having eaten at many "Started" restaurants in the passed we were very excited to see hat they could offer, both of us loving fish we could not wait. Upon arrival I was shocked at the ram shackle appearance of the whole place and had to check we were at the correct place. Scruffy & untidy describe
it well. the food however was even more of a let down, bland with no flavour . The presentation was appalling. with what looked like 1 potato with the sides cut off & some very unappealing broccoli, limp & tasteless. How " The Sportsman" has a Michelin star I will never understand. maybe they have lost it now as there is no mention of it on the website. However, Michelin star or not the food & ambience did not reflect the price being asked. I did voice my disappointment at the time & my bill was reduced. I would not recommend "The Sportsman" on any level there are far better local eateries in the town which provide better food at a much lower cost
Fordwich is a really beautiful small town, and the restaurant is equally impressive. There is parking onsite, but due to a road closure you’ll need to find roadside parking nearby, which wasn’t an issue for us.
As the weather was so nice, they were serving outside on the patio, which was really nice. The service is absolutely fantastic and everyone was friendly.
As for the food, it’s absolutely faultless. Each dish is so cleverly executed, beautifully presented, and packed with flavour.
When we paid the bill, we really thought it was good value. It’s an exceptional dining experience and we can’t wait to go back.
We had a beer here and just hang out on the first floor for 2 hours, enjoying the view and the atmosphere of the town. The service was quick and the staff were friendly.
