We had heard great reviews about this place, when researching we discovered you can book a table, though this is only available after 2pm. We are so glad we did! Fast, effective, polite service. Due to booking, we were able to skip the queue, and shown straight to our table. Lovely views. We were given both food and drinks menus, which we were given ample time to peruse. We opted for the regular fish and chips (with extras) which was more than sufficient (neither of us could finish the job!) There was a slight wait for the food, however they were very busy (people were still queuing up at this point.) It was well worth it! We have never tasted fish and chips like it! Staff extremely friendly, nothing too much hassle, they clearly wanted their customers to enjoy their evening. Trip Advisor only allow 5 out of 5, we would give it a 10! If we find ourselves in Whitby again, there is nowhere else we are going for our fish and chips! The reputation this establishment has, is well worth it! Thank you!

We had eaten here before and enjoyed it, so we booked for our anniversary meal. We thought we’d treat ourselves and have caviar first (£25). We were informed that it would probably come with the starters because, quote, “the chef has a prejudice against pre-starters.” (!!) Oh, so we will rush the caviar to ensure our starters don’t go cold, shall we? I pointed out that as paying guests, we wanted them separate… My crab Bon Bon starter was a bit dry, although my wife’s razor clams were “delicious”, to be fair. My sea bass was ok, but I felt the mackerel pate was way too big for the amount of fish served. I did not enjoy the pickled cucumber, but that’s just personal taste. My wife’s lemon sole was “nice”, but we both agreed the food was far below the standard we had enjoyed here previously. We did not fancy either of the TWO desserts on offer, so we finished and left the restaurant. I’m afraid we won’t be back. The waiting staff were nice, but we’ll go somewhere that doesn’t seem scared of their chef in future.

Love seafood restaurants and it is so lovely to eat overlooking the harbour. Food and service were very good and with our visit being a Thursday night the place wasn't too busy (it gets very busy in season). Do not hesitate to visit here or their sister restaurant ((The fish shack) if you love seafood (other options are available). Thank you

Now I get the name of the place having the word shack in so I should not have been so surprised at some of the things that made me blink in wonder. Wooden knives n forks. Drinks served in the can. Shabby blankets outside. No shellfish at all on the menu. Maybe I expected more but when I'm paying £25 for a bit of fish trying to eat it with a small wooden fork is impossible. It was rather over done and the side potatoes were over salted (and I like salt!!). So much so I could not eat them. My friends faired a bit better with their kedgeree and both said it was nice. What really did get me though was the service charge put on. Think it was 15% Not sure what it was for as we were seved 3 meals and 3 cans of coke. The cost was just under £80. I had looked forward to a very long time to eating here and was so disappointed.
