Wonderful old fashioned restaurant serving great seafood

Brilliant lunch today (Saturday, 3rd May 2025). Fantastic food and the service was exemplary. Also great value. Can't wait to return.

The quality of food is outstanding. We had the oysters, croquettes, Moules marinière and the pasta, all of which were delicious. The service is professional and friendly without being overbearing. They apply a £2.50 cover charge per person to the bill, on top of the service charge. The waitress confirmed that this is to cover the utilities and that they offer 'complimentary' bread and butter for this. I found this a little odd given that no other restaurant I've been to in Brighton applies a cover charge. Bearing in mind also that this isn't a cheap restaurant.

Nous nous sommes rendus dans ce restaurant du centre ville. Nous avons pris le Fish and ship et il était vraiment excellent. La sauce tartare maison était vraiment délicieuse. Les serveurs et serveuses sont souriants et efficaces. Seul bémol c'est la facture: 2,5 livres/ personne pour les couverts et 10% de facture en plus pour le service... Les deux fish and chips passant ainsi de 40 à 50 livres... C'est un peu exagéré à mon goût. C'était peut être indiqué quelque part mais nous ne l'avons pas vu...

Lugar excepcional para cualquier ocasión. Ubicado en el centro para lugares anteriores o posteriores. Segunda visita en un mes. En ambas ocasiones la comida y el servicio han sido sobresalientes. Ostras, cangrejo suave y plato de marisco caliente eran increíbles. Novia eligió y quedó completamente impresionado. El personal era genial cuando tiré el plato y se aclaró muy discretamente! Esperamos con interés nuestra próxima visita.

The food is really tasty, no complaints. The pleasantries and service are also very good. Doesn't smell unpleasant either. It would have been a really great restaurant if it weren't for the hidden costs. Yes, the food is a bit more expensive than elsewhere, but ok, you get very good food for that. But what doesn't work and therefore deducts 2 stars are the hidden costs. 2.5GBR for side dishes (olives on the table etc.), which are not mentioned (except in the small print on the menu) and the fixed 12.5% ​​service fee, which is also not mentioned, are nasty. When paying with a card, we rounded up well, even then we weren't told that a tip was actually included in the price. It only dawned on us after payment - too late. Read an uneasy feeling after the delicious dinner...

Myself and my husband went here and we found everything to our satisfaction. The service was excellent and nothing too much trouble. We enjoyed the atmosphere and decor thoroughly enjoying our meal which was more than enough! The prices were reasonable too.

El personal era crispado y atento sin intrusión. La gente puede decir que es caro, creo que ofrece una buena relación calidad-precio. ANAZING FOOD, MUSCLES ARE TO DIE FOR! 😍🍤 Best muscles in Brighton by far! Been coming for years and it gets better every time! Also service is brilliant and they always look after you. Highly reccommend to any fans of fish and wine.

Nice little restaurant. Mussels were lovely and the venison tataki. Main courses were ok - fish and chips could have been better. I don't like the mushy peas and tartare sauce on my plate. I think they should be served in separate little dishes. Staff were fabulous

Very tasty fish and chips in the heart of Brighton! We had the lunch set menu which was really good value for money for two courses. The calamari and fish and chips were really good and the portion of fish and chips was generous (it would have been great if it came with peas or mushy peas though!) I had the seafood croquettes which were ok, I wish I’d picked the calamari though as my fiancé had this and it was cooked to perfection. Overall, great food.

This was our 3rd visit to English's over the last few years and although the service was impeccable and accommodating, the wait time reasonable and the wine list packed full of great choices the value for money on the food has drastically decreased. We ordered the hot platter, costing £49 per person, and were very disappointed to see how little you get for your money currently. 1 Prawn, 1 Scallop, 3 very small fish fillets, and 2 battered oysters each alongside a portion of mussels and clams. The environment is classy and comfortable, and the decor is plastered with Brightons' history. The drinks were great and we enjoyed our visit but we will not be visiting again, it's clear to see why this once great restaurant is selling up as obviously the overheads of operating a restaurant in the heart of Brighton are clearly affecting their offering. If money is no object and you're looking for great quality seafood, give it a try, but if you're seeking value for money, then you will be disappointed.

First time at English's yesterday and first time all 4 of us trying oysters - we started with 6 oysters and then had another 6 - very nice - good food and atmosphere and the waitress was lovely and really helpful. Thanks as I'm sure that we'll be back ... renewed thanks steve

Decor and ambience really nice. Stylish. Food was good. Venison starter and soft shell crab excellent. Fish stew was good too. Service was good, but we felt rushed through. 12.5% service charge and £5 cover for bread is excessive. Really enjoyed meal, but way overpriced compared to other seafood restaurants in Brighton.

I have been to English's many times over many years and it's probably my long time favourite Brighton restaurant. It's delightfully traditional with great food, wine and charming service and a lovely dining room. Went today with my brother and had a bargain set lunch and a very delicious bottle of wine. A very enjoyable experience.

We had a lovely evening in this cozy restaurant. The food was amazing, the service was lovely and we felt very comfortable. Our Chateaubriand was amazing and complemented by delicious chimichuri. Scallops were juicy and the sea bass was fantastic. The wine list complimented the food and I was happy to see American wines on the list. Definitely will come back and highly recommend this cozy place.

I was recommended English’s from a work colleague about a year ago and on booking a show that night in Brighton we booked in advance as not to be disappointed. We arrived 20 minutes late although never a problem once we had arrived, the gentleman put us at ease and kindly offered to take our coats and hang them up we where then given the choice of places to sit. Very attentive waiter who answered our queries and made us feel very comfortable. I chose to have the Oysters which I can honestly say where the best I’ve ever tasted so big and meaty. My wife had the scallops which again where big and meaty and cooked to perfection, I had the prawns beautifully presented with an accompanying sauce that was so good we asked for an extra roll to dip in, gorgeous ! Then the mains of lobster and fries , plenty of fresh juicy meat on the lobster and a delicious Thermidor sauce. I chose the Dover sole, mashed potatoe and wilted spinach, given the choice by the waiter the fish was filleted in front of me and presented beautifully, all tasting so fresh and perfectly cooked. All in all this lunch was up there with the best we have ever had and would highly recommend a visit , next time we are in Brighton we shall definitely be booking English’s for another wonderful dining experience.

A great seafood restaurant and well situated just off the seafront. There is a lovely ambience to the place and the staff are excellent very helpful, professional and enthusiastic. The food is cooked to order and very well presented. We had 3 courses, wine, cocktails and a liqueur coffee and we had nothing but compliments for it all. Our waitress Lorraine was excellent and provided superb service and interaction despite being extremely busy on occasions. If you enjoy seafood this is a must visit in Brighton. Whilst not cheap we did not begrudge the cost for a lovely evening

Visited the restaurant on Friday evening. The food and service were excellent. It’s one of the best restaurants in Brighton.

Visited today for a belated birthday lunch. One of my all-time favourite restaurants. Superb fish and chips with excellent service, always wonderful ambience in the Brighton Lanes. Excellent house wine. All of the food is divine. The Bloody Mary Oyster Shot is not to be missed. We have been to Engish’s many times over the years, it is always excellent. Don’t change anything!

Lovely Dover sole, friendly service, cosy dining room

We had an excellent meal, great service and we were very well looked after. Absolutely no complaints. Our experience was spoiled by a very arrogant and rude man who was extremely rude to a female member of staff. We were shocked that a grown man was so rude about a trivial matter but sweet as pie when the male manager took over. Disgusting behaviour towards a female member of staff who was clearly upset. What a nasty horrible small man! A credit to the management for their professional approach. They didn't deserve his harsh treatment.

Booked into English‘s via the first table app, The conditions of our booking with this app were £6 booking fee, book either 5pm or 12 noon,two courses and two drinks, and we get all our food half price. What a bargain £63 taken off our bill we had free starters and lobster meals, all excellent, and thoroughly recommended

Beautiful food and wonderful service. We arrived early for a spot of lunch and were greeted warmly by a gentleman. We were the first there and sat by the window. Great service all round by the gentleman and the young waitress. We had no problems with food or service at all. We saw how they handled a complaint from another table very professionally (an elderly gentleman complaining about how a pie should be a pie?? and complaining again when paying the bill?), the staff had a lot of patience! We weren't there for long but saw many things.. including (nothing to do with the restaurant) a customer who had a cat in a backpack which had a little domed window. ... I wasn't sure about that.. All in all, a lovely lunch spent at English's. Food was beautiful and cooked to perfection. We had the bisque and hot seafood platter. Everything was very tasty and flavoursome. Will definitely be back when next in a Brighton!

I went to this truly superb restaurant for lunch with two good friends yesterday and both the food and service were simply the best.

I'm not one for fine dining. I'd booked because it had the best reviews closest to our hotel. Thought it looked a wee bit stuffy. But.... It isn't. Staff were lovely. Service great and food first class. It is a bit more expensive than other places around. But worth it.

Very warm welcome from the staff at English’s. We pre booked but arrived early and they were able to accommodate us. Service was excellent, friendly attentive staff. The food was excellent, we had the starter platter and steak that was cooked to perfection. The only slight downside was that there could have been more of it for the price. Overall, we’d definitely come back.

Gorgeous meal at English's this evening. Food was stunning and so flavourful. We had lovely service; they really can't do enough for you here. The only thing that slightly let's them down is portion sizes. We spent £130 and went to Greggs on the way home because we were still hungry. However- that is just my experience, I think you need to order carefully to get your moneys worth and this isn't a venue for someone on a budget. If that isn't you- then head on down to English's. Oysters were stunning!

Perfect service and delicious food!!

This is not our first visit to this lovely restaurant, unfortunately time we had a couple of issues. Our table was booked and when we arrived it wasn’t available, they asked us if we wanted a table upstairs, I said I would prefer a table on the ground floor. A table become available and they gave it to us, I wasn’t completely satisfied as the table was very small and I think it’s the worst table on the ground floor, the only alternative table would be upstairs, although there was another table close to us that was empty all evening. The other issue was they never told us what the fish of the day or any of the other specials were! Unfortunately due to the issues we had it spoil our dining experience and evening. Our food was very good. If we book again I will ask for the table of our choice at the time of booking, so we already know where we will be sat.

Brilliant fish restaurant, with varied menu. Cosy ambience. Excellent discrete service, with attentive waiter. A very pleasant evening.

This restaurant was recommended to us and we will make it a regular dining place. We did not book so we sat at the bar as every other seat was taken. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The starter of mussels was delicious and there were no empty shells. The sharing cold platter of fish was excellent. Plenty to eat and so fresh. Leave space for dessert, you will not be disappointed. Thank you to the staff who gave us such an enjoyable evening.

We have been many times, the quality has always been good. The atmosphere we both really like. I had the Dover sole and it was spot on! The hot sharing starter again really hit the spot. If you are a wine lover, then the wine list is something to behold. The team were welcoming. Well done!

English’s of Brighton offers an exceptional seafood dining experience! The lobster bisque is an absolute must-try—rich, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. The egg pasta with crab meat paste was perfectly paired with the tagliatelle, making for an indulgent and delightful dish. The sea bass fish of the day was beautifully cooked, with the sweet and fresh sauce complementing the fish's natural flavors superbly. Finally, the grilled pineapple dessert was a delicious surprise—its generous portion easily served the four of us, and the pairing with the ice cream was flawless. Highly recommended for seafood lovers!

Fantastic, fresh, delicious and authentic!

English’s is one of my favourite restaurants to visit in Brighton! This Brighton institution offers fantastic fish and seafood in a relaxed yet formal setting. The staff are super friendly and the food is fantastic! I will be back, highly recommend!

The food was great. I had the lunch special for 2 dishes £25, plus water and a wine. There were skinny fries with the mussels. That was interesting but they were the tastiest fries I've eaten on the island so far. The restaurant is a bit more expensive but the quality of the food was great.

Incredible meal at Englishes! Every dish was delicious and the service was top tier. Traditional restaurant vibes but with a cosy, non-stuffy atmosphere. Will be coming back!

Table for 3 last week. Been a long time since we have been, a big birthday for my father. We have been lucky over the years, eating at some great fish restaurants in northern France, the med and Padstein! Well English's is in the Premier League... it says something that they have been in the same spot and ownership for 75+ years.... The service on arrival was seamless, friendly and as expected. Spoilt for choice on the aperitifs! My father - master of wine - was instantly distracted by the wine list and like a 'child in a sweetshop'. Most importantly the food. Simple choice for us on a warm sunny day, cold seafood platter accompanied by some well dressed salads and french fries. There wasn't a single component that was out of place, all deliciously presented and dressed where required. We ate like Poseidon, Neptune and Njord! Thank you to the team front and back of house. Delightful lunch.

A fabulous experience. Fine August weather meant that we could sit outside. Food and service excellent. One of the best fish restaurants I’ve ever been too. Not cheap but I felt that we got what we paid for - good value for the quality of food and service. Highly recommended.

We had a lovely birthday loooong lunch for my partner, a perfect table for 8 on the terrace - fabulous food, attentive but not stuffy service, we’ve not been here for a few years and it has remained one of our favourite restaurants. We go to English’s every time we visit Brighton for a summer day out. It’s a bit of a tradition now! The food is always excellent and they have great staff. They are so helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Yes it’s a bit old school, but that’s why it’s so great! Treat yourself and enjoy

I go to English's restaurant as the service is friendly and professional.. My favourite is Oysters and Patterson's Chardonnay white wine! I can't fault anything!! My Sister and I love the experience and service!

I want to bring your attention to the following issue that I experienced at this restaurant: This was a celebration for a milestone birthday, and my friend mentioned this on the online booking so the restaurant knew this as they had prepared a table for us. We travelled down from London on 2 August because this seafood restaurant has very good reviews. The table decorations and setting were lovely, and the appetizers of raw Rock oysters and Oysters Kilpatrick were delicious. For the main dish, we ordered a shared Hot Platter of mixed seafood. Upon inquiring about the cooking method, the waitress informed us that the seafood would be cooked in butter and oil with no seasoning or spices. However, when the platter arrived, all the seafood was covered in black pepper, which I dislike but I decided to give it a try. I was unable to eat after a few bites. When I mentioned this to the French waiter, he explained that it is normal to use black pepper in European cuisine, but I wasn't comfortable with it. After I shared my concerns, the waiter removed the platter and left only the mussels which were, unfortunately, full of grit. We could not be bothered with complaining because a previous review a few months back had mentioned grit in the mussels. Later, he brought out a separate platter just for me with only 3 small fillets, 1 prawn and 2 scallops. However my friend did not have anything to eat. When queried he said my friend had mentioned she had ate her share. He then brought out MY old plate with food to compare what was eaten and what wasn’t. This was humiliating in a crowded restaurant. He had misunderstood my friend who had said she was fine with black pepper TO “she had eaten her share of platter”. In all my life of having shared platters this has never happened. Most restaurants would have just brought out a whole fresh platter without black pepper. When I raised my concerns again, the waiter promised to bring out a new platter. However, the second platter still did not meet our expectations. It came in 2 separate plates and on my plate it contained the same two fillets, two scallops, and two tiger prawns, all of which were overcooked. It looked like waiter had put my second platter to stay warm in oven while my friend’s was being cooked. The rest of the items advertised were missing. An English gentleman who looked like the manager later apologised and offered us £16.00 off the bill and complimentary coffee. Unfortunately, despite this gesture, we felt deeply disappointed with the overall experience. I was also never wished a happy birthday by the staff at any point. I presume only people who are fine with plenty of black pepper on their food have left good reviews. It also seemed like the French waiter was penny pinching so he can get brownie points for reducing costs for restaurant. Well I hope he is happy with his brownie point because we are never coming back.

Fresh seafood, we ordered hot seafood platter, there were three types of fish, fried oysters, scallops, prawns, and a pot with mussels and clams. I really enjoyed the platter with friends, especially the pot, love the freshness and soup in the pot! The staffs were friendly as well💚 The food is quite fresh in a seafood restaurant. I ordered the hot seafood platter, which included three different kinds of fish, fried oysters, scallops, shrimps, and a delicious clam pot with mussels! I really like the soup in that pot and the freshness of the shellfish. The staff is also very friendly and the overall dining experience is great and enjoyable.

It’s been years since we ate at English’s and standards are still high. We had grilled brill and grilled Dover sole which were both excellent and excellent value compared to London where similar fish can be twice the price. It’s delightful to eat outside when the weather is good (which it was whilst we were there) and the staff are attentive - it’s how dining should be. It’s also very convenient for The Pavilion which is a very short stroll back into town.

My daughter and I went to English's for lunch to celebrate my birthday. It was a beautiful sunny and we sat outside. We had the three course set menu, which was listed as £30, but had an extra £2.50 cover charge each for a mackerel pate appetiser. So, in reality, £32.50 each. Still great value. We both had the calamari starter and the moules marineres main. Both absolutely delicious, especially the calamari. And good size portions. We shared a carafe of a very decent Gavi de Gavi white wine and a bottle of sparkling water. The service was perfect, with well trained staff who were also able to discuss and advise on the menu choices. My only gripe was with the desserts. I chose the Old Winchester chees with honey, nuts and pane carasau and my daughter had a selection of sorbets. The ice creams were all delicious. The cheese dish was dry and boring, such that I picked off the little cubes of cheese and pretty much left everything else. It didn't feel like a thought out, balanced dish, which was odd, as everything else we had was so exceptional and well balanced that no additional seasoning was required. I highly recommend this restaurant for the food, service and overall value for money. They just need to re-think the cheese dish!

Honestly the BEST seafood experience in the UK I’ve ever had! Can’t believe I’ve never been to this hidden gem. The staff are on point and service rates as top in the world. Thank You Lorraine for the best night. Would 100% recommend.

First Class restaurant and a wonderful lunch. Looking forward to a return visit when I next visit Brighton.

Small cramped room as it became busy. Menu quite confusing and badly laid out. Expensive too! The soft shell crab tempura was awful, oozing some slimy content, and it was just one little piece. The fish pie was a wet mash, few bits of buried salmon and white fish, peas swimming over the mash and some shells piled on top. It was vile. It did have one small scallop and a prawn! Luckily my family all chose rather better, like basic fish and chips or dressed crab where not much can go wrong. Staff were attentive and first class.

Took my family who were over from Mauritius to give them the experience of an English sea food restaurant. It was very disappointing. The salt and pepper squid started was very bland, the pesto sauce tasted like it was out of a jar; presentation wasn’t great either. I’ve had better fish and chips from my local chippy in Tottenham. Fish was over cooked which made the batter very dry, this was plonked on top of the mound of tartar sauce. Chips were cup up in blocks which also seemed over cooked. As if a Poisin isn’t small enough, they only gave half a poison. It was such a shame, particularly as I’ve been there previously and the food was exceptional. Feedback given to the young waitress who did apologies, but I’m not sure the feedback would go anywhere

A pretty restaurant in the Lanes in Brighton,had a good meal and Ashley the Canadian Waitress was a delight. In settling the bill,I noted 2 charges of GBP2.50 as Cover Charge Total GBP5.00 I queried Ashley as to what this was for and she said its to cover the bread,butter and pate. Really!!!...at the start of the meal we were each presented with 2 Half Slices of Bread,a tiny pat of butter and a thimble full of mackeral pate....no indication that we should be charged extra for this....the product cost would even reach 40pence!! The rather pompous Italian Host proceeded to show me that such a charge was noted on the menu (as usual at the bottom in small print)...I said that you should alert the customer to additional charges prior to service...he disagreed,and said that such charges are now common (not to me they are are we frequently dine out). However I said I will not pay and he removed them from the bill (must have felt a little guilty/sneaky) A disappointing end to a lovely evening.

I love seafood and this place is brilliant.

Just had yet another lovely lunch at Englishs. It’s so nice to find a slightly more formal but relaxed place to meet friends and enjoy their wonderful food. At the moment they are offering a set 2 or 3 course lunch or dinner (with choice of dishes in each course) at great value of £30 for lunch up to 6 pm or dinner at £40 from 6pm. We had a late lunch and were enjoying the atmosphere so much we stayed almost through to dinner. They also have tables on an outside terrace. I’m already planning another visit.

What an experience. Nothing short of outstanding from the service to the food. It was the PERFECT place for the most special occasion. I couldn’t recommend enough. Thank you for having us and making it so special X

What a beautiful little Gem! Staff were so friendly, atmosphere was gorgeous and the food was incredible. Was such a lovely day for a special occasion. Would definitely recommend if you want an intimate fine dining experience.

Amazing seafood experience....the Oysters were excellent... highly recommended. The service was outstanding, and the manager was a pleasure to deal with. Thank you, English's of Brighton, for an excellent time.

Stumbled across this gem waiting to go to a gig at Dust. Goodness me....sumptuous. I love fish and this place really delivers. Cracking wine selection. Great service as well. Recommended!

We are welcomed by a gentleman (the owner or senior floor manager) and a team of waitresses who escorted promptly to a table on 1st floor. The atmosphere is very traditional, quiet and welcoming. We ordered Rock oysters for Starter and were very delicious. Saffron risotto and Dover sole were perfect for the main dish for two. Quality of foods was excellent. Wine list and other drink menu are very decent too.

It was in a bit of a corner, so I looked it up on Google Maps and went in. Quiet and nice interior atmosphere. The server took great care and was nice. I ordered seafood stew for two people and it was really generous and delicious. It's like eating a lot of seafood in a sweet and salty tomato stew. It's good! There is a lot more seafood in the jar shown in the picture.

Quite certain this was the most impressive meal of my life. Even arriving under dressed for a such a place, 10min before the kitchen closed, we were treated with tremendous respect and kindness. But the service was completely outdone by the food! We done all over the world, chasing Michelin star, and James beard award locations, and this has undoubtedly jumped to the top of my list for best seafood ever. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE! What a complete gem. 👏 Literally could not stop myself from dancing at the first bite.

Exquisite service and friendly staff surrounded by elegance and class

The menu is excellent and the quality and presentation of food really perfect. Tucked in a corner on the edge of The Lanes, this restaurant has a slightly old world comfortable charm about it. It has been a while since we have found a restaurant that still offers savoury options on its dessert menu. The service is impeccable. But it is not inexpensive; and their wine list is rather overpriced (£10 plus for a glass of NZ Sauvignon Blanc is over egging it). Unfortunately, for that reason, it falls into “a special occasion” option.
