I would say that this is now probably my favourite fish & chip shop In Brighton & Hove. They offer a good selection of fish which is always freshly cooked the right amount and, like the chips, is never greasy. It's not particularly cheap but I don't know a fish & chip shop that is nowadays. It's a bit out of the way and the opening hours are a bit limited but I reckon it's worth making the effort to seek it out.

I have been eating fish and chips from Montefiore Fisheries for over 8 years. The fish is always fresh and cooked to order. The chips are always freshly cooked & crisp. They have never let me down. The owner is always friendly and cheerful. Best fish & chips in Brighton or Hove, no doubt.

Ordered chips and cod for 6 people with extra bits. BEST batter and flavour, great chips, cooked well. I’ll defo be back again.

If the portion of chips I had this evening are anything to judge the rest of the food by then I’d definitely recommend. Popped in here after visiting a friend in the hospital over the road. Saw this place as I walked in checked the reviews and thought I’d grab a portion of chips. I was not disappointed… best chip shop chips I’ve had in years. Even a fussy 9 year old agreed. I’m not often in this area of Brighton I would visit, I might even be persuaded to make a detour to pick up a portion too. Reasonably priced, quick friendly service and delicious.

Do not order online through their website. They won’t accept your order but you will be fully charged. Because in their words ‘we’ve turned the machine off’. When you do walk over to Montefiore Fisheries to see what’s happened, the staff won’t be helpful. In fact, they’ll be visibly angry that you dared try to order online, will try and charge you again for an order you’ve already paid for and will seem genuinely confused why you want a refund. A refund they won’t be able to give you because they use a third party online ordering system. Best avoided. Plenty more fish and chip shops in Brighton with an understanding that customers miiiight every now and then want to order online and pick up. Even more will understand that a customer might not want to be charged twice for the same order. A shame.

The fish was very nice and freshly cooked. Part of the meal was missing. The rest was like warm at best and the chips had been cooked more than once. After paying over £30 for fish and chips, I expected better. Probably won't use them again

We came here as part of the Eat out to Help Out promotion during August. On entering, the restaurant is impressive- nice decor & seemed very clean. We were shown to our table, the staff were actually pleasant and attentive. Unfortunately our table was in the middle of the room and less than a metre away from another table, without any kind of protective screening, which made us both feel uncomfortable (also not one member of staff was wearing a mask, I feel this leaves them vulnerable to infection). Now to the food. Being a vegan, I was really excited about the menu. Plenty of choice for me for once! The menu advised that you order 2-3 dishes per person, which we did, really somebody should have mentioned that the dishes are quite large so we ended up with far too much food that we couldn’t finish! Unfortunately lots of the vegan dishes were fried (probably my fault for not reading the descriptions properly) and the tofu, although quite tasty, was ridiculously salty which means I could only eat a couple of mouthfuls. The cauliflower was delicious and I wish we’d ordered 2 portions of that instead of the other choices. I would eat here again but would love to see some healthier vegan options on the menu.

Popped in for a burger, burger was great, but the chips were rubbish (seemed a bit school-dinners style, totally unlike the chips/fries I've always had here before and not what you'd expect in this price bracket!) Maybe they were just having a bad day... Also would've prefered coleslaw on the side rather than the rocket(?) leaves - the 'slaw just works better! Service and beer 100% great as always, and newly refurbished bits of the pub much appreciated. Don't get me wrong, I do love this place :-)

Wonderful fish and chips! I've been here twice now and both times the fish is fresh and both were cooked to perfection. Not to greasy. Generous portion sizes and friendly staff. They have a good selection on their menu to choose from with Veggie options too. Happy customer 😊.

I have been buying fish & chips here for 7 years and the food has been consistently great quality. The fish is always fresh and often cooked to order. The chips are usually fresh, crisp and white. The owner is welcoming & friendly. It is located in a quiet residential street, and there is on-street parking. There are tables and chairs in front or you can walk across to St Ann’s Well Gardens and eat on a park bench. Definitely a hidden gem.

We go here often as it’s our closest chip shop. To be honest the chips are sometimes a bit greasy and floppy, and sometimes the fish isn’t well cooked, but sometimes the fish is great so we’re not totally put off. The current owners could be more cheery but maybe they don’t feel cheery - who know? It’s an ok chippy. You will be able to get fish and chips and eat it and feel full of nice food.

I've just had a cod & chips, it was delicious. The cod was a generous plump portion, tasty & moist. The chips were well cooked & dry. The staff were friendly too. Highly recommend this chippy.

Massively surprised at how awful the batter was after taking this round the corner to where I live. It was soggy and didn’t retain any firmness. The fish itself doesn’t appear to be the flakey cod texture you get from good chippies. I’m dubious about the freshness and type of fish they are serving here. See for yourself. Won’t be returning.

good chips. nice batter on fish, i come here every time we want fish and chips, also a good selection of other traditional chip shop food.also, on a side point- the chap behind the counter might seem a bit grumpy but if you smile he softens and smiles back! lol He was also very kind to my daughter and gave her some free chips. so thumbs up from us 👍👍👍

The food is freshly prepared, the standard is good and the helpings are large. The fish was excellent though the batter was somewhat tasteless. Chips were great. The onion rings were bland (tasted like supermarket frozen). The staff could be more friendly. Despite that, would definitely go again though I wouldn't order the onion rings again!

Traditional no-frills fish and chip shop offering superbly cooked fish and chips at very reasonable prices. We had the special offer (Monday through Wednesday) cod and chips @ £4.50 and it was faultless: the chips had just the right amount of crispness vs soft centres and the fish was white, lightly battered and of very good quality. They even provide that delicious vinegar from the pickled onion jar which goes so well with chips. Sat outside to eat them on the small terrace (2 tables) in front of the shop. Will definitely be returning. Give them a try, you won't regret it.

Had heard this place was under new management, so thought I'd give it a try on the way home. The staff member behind the counter was extremely glum, and appeared somewhat overwhelmed by the basics of working in a fish and chip shop. After waiting over 10 minutes for my large bag of chips to appear, he asked me if the cod was mine... and then had to ask me and the other 2 customers what we'd all ordered as he'd mixed us all up. The chips tasted OK though, if cut a bit too small and thin. Won't be going back in a hurry.

This has always been a very good fish and chip shop, having been in the same place for over 50 years. It is now under new ownership, with a slightly extended menu and open on Mondays. The fish is outstanding in quality and freshly cooked to order. Portions are very generous - I have not yet managed to eat a whole 'small' portion of chips, despite their splendid taste, and the fact I am rarely defeated by a meal. I shall certainly be back.

I've been to this place a couple of times since it's has been under new management and both times I haven't been disappointed. The food was amoung the best fish and chips I've ever had and the owners are really friendly. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a tasty takeaway.

The menu is limited but everything is so fresh - the food is cooked as you wait, so no soggy chips. Very friendly and efficient service - the perfect neighbourhood chippy - and with five hygiene stars on the doors.
