I was recommended the boathouse by a friend and I have never had such a wonderful lunch. I had scallops with a tomato and oregano cream to start and the Stone Bass Fillet with Blueshell Mussels, Heritage Potatoes, Wild Mushroom & Samphire Cream and I have to say the main goes lovely with their Marlborough Sauvignon blanc and I’m in a food coma. Definitely worth a trip here, you won’t regret it!!

A 40 minutes wait for food was not the best start. The food was very good but the quantity was poor. We had the dressed crab with Focaccia. The crab was excellent but the focaccia was a poor imitation. At £27 I would expect better. Then to top things off the restaurant had an infestation where I sat of fruit flies. I must have killed a couple dozen All in all a very poor experience.

I was so disappointed in the food and the service. We’d been here in March of this year and had a good experience, but things have definitely changed. The staff were clearly unhappy in their work, the service was slow and came with attitude, they could be heard moaning about other members of staff too. We paid a lot of money for very average food and will not be returning.

Lovely friendly service by young team. Decent prices for size and quality, drinks served well; cold, lots of ice. Chips looked amazing, but taste didn’t quite live up. Half lobster looked beautiful (I didn’t get a look in!) All in a very good choice, great for families.

Disappointed really. Could not wait to revisit this place as it has been a holiday favourite for the past couple of years. Only had coffee and scones and the coffee wasn’t amazing and the scones were not that great either, didn’t even give clotted cream. So a bit of a let down sadly. The location is amazing if the weather is good enough to sit out on a positive note.

Very disappointed in our lunch visit today. ,,,,, not a patch on how it used to be. We waited 50 minutes for our starters… one of which included totally cold overcooked broccoli. We then waited 35 minutes for our main courses. The chowder was not at all what we hoped for….mostly carrot and onion, very little fish and one tiny piece of corn. At no point did anyone ask if the food was ok, in fact we felt very ignored. It felt like a very average fish and chip cafe not an award winning restaurant. We will try somewhere else next time.

Hmmm it was OK but only just! I had squid which was fine but the pieces were too large and very undercooked and unpleasant to eat. Mackerel pate was fine BUT my partner and daughter’s pizzas were utterly disgusting and the Margarita pizza was mostly cheese so my daughter left it and for £13.50 they should at least have been home cooked. Very expensive for very average food.

This booking was made on the basis of the wonderful reviews of the Seafood Platter at The Old Boathouse. We travelled from Edinburgh, incorporating an overnight stay. To say it was a disappointment would be an understatement. The ambience was fine. Our waitress was pleasant. We came for Oysters and the Platter. The Lindisfarne Oysters were delicious. The Platter was a combination of hot and cold fish, seafood, salad, bread , chips and condiments. Sensibly, we ate the hot food first. The fish was well cooked . The Mussels were cold , the wine and cream sauce congealed on the shells. The giant chips were definitely reheated but were in fact cold and rubbery in texture, with a chip on top displaying a large black rotten hole. In terms of the cold seafood and fish the very small Lobster, ostensibly the star of the Platter, comprised mostly of Roe and was inedible. The Manageress suggested we just ate what we could of the tail meat. The bread , presumably to accompany the smoked salmon was in slices an inch thick and, because it was on the Platter adjacent to the pickled herring, was sodden with the juices. The smoked mackerel and smoked salmon could have come from any supermarket . We made the restaurant Manageress aware of our dissatisfaction whereupon she demonstrated a general lack of interest and unfortunately had indifferent manner. There was a 10% service charge which, for the first time in my life, I asked to have removed. On leaving the Restaurant the Manageress avoided all eye contact. We will never return to this Restaurant and will advise all friends to avoid.

We visited whilst on holiday to celebrate a special birthday in the family. We were expecting some amazing seafood based on reviews and the so called ‘award’ winning status of the restaurant. We were also led by the largely positive reviews on here and didn't pay much attention to the negative reviews. However, upon visiting we found our experience to be far more consistent with the poorer reviews - so take a look. The food and overall experience was terribly poor. Given the prices being charged (we were £70 per head for starters, mains and some wine) you expect a certain quality, service and overall atmosphere in the restaurant. Unfortunately we felt that all were lacking. Service was ok, presentation of the menu (laminated sheet of paper) was far from inspiring and overall quality and enjoyment of dishes was poor. A few of us opted for scallops to start which were served cold, with cold black pudding and a lukewarm sauce. We were told that this is how the dish was supposed to be, but of the four of us who tried it, we all felt it was extremely disappointed, not a great start for £14. The main dishes were all ok but nothing to write home about, not a clear plate in sight (never a great sign). Our three year old daughter dined with us and was offered up a pizza straight from the freezer, not sure why restaurants feel the need to serve children such poor quality. The restaurant evidently have facilities for making pizzas given there were several options on the main menu, so why couldn't a smaller 'proper pizza be made for a child? £10 for frozen pizza and a scoop of ice cream is just terrible. If you are visiting Amble, you'll be stuck for good places to eat, but please don't be reeled in by the 'award' winning status of this restaurant. Save some money and dine elsewhere.

We had the seafood platter for two what a disappointment , £89 it was a total rip off.The lobster was watery which leads me to think that it was frozen and apart from the batter fish and chips (which was amazing) the rest was below average at best. The service was excellent and the restaurant was more like a mediocre cafe .Would definitely go back for the fish and chips but would definitely not go here for a special meal.

Went in, had to wait 10 minutes for a simple single w/ coke and a bottle of wine. Starters were fine, bread wasn't too good, sun-dried tomatoes didn't absorb the olive oil too well. Not enough butter. (Olives / bread side for a starter, fyi) Single oyster, nothing wrong with it. Probably a bit too much ice just for show, but all good there. As for mains, got the Trout on the special board and the pork belly. The meat and fish was fine, albeit the potatoes weren't great. The texture wasn't great. The kippers in it, personally that's just my taste, weren't my cup of tea. Some kind of mushroom-potato thing was on the other plate and it did not go down well. Needless to say, the mash was left on the plates when they were taken away. Following that, not fancying a bought-in desert, we had a liqueur coffee. Cointreau, however they shook it too much and put sugar in it without asking. They shouldn't need to put the sugar in to float the cream, as it was already well-whipped from being overshook. Most of the staff were chatting, I didn't fancy hearing about boyfriends and whatnot, I came for food. By the time we were asked if the mains we're alright, we were just about finished. Also, very kind of them to tell us about the 10% service charge on the bill (not). Had that removed, but still tipped a bit.

Saw the menu and reviews online before our long weekend in Amble so booked well in advance for Friday night, The Old Boathouse did not disappoint1 We shared the fish platter which at £89 is not cheap but in our opinion was worth every penny. Wine and desert (apparently) were also delicious and the service was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed it so much that we booked again for Sunday evening and the fish & chips and the chowder were of the same high quality.

Was unable to book through the website as it allowed to book a table for 4 people or 8, and our group was for 5. Called up and made a reservation the Monday before the weekend. The lady on the phone was polite and made the booking. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the booking was not there. I was then questioned whether I'd got mixed up with their partner restaurant with a different name several times, to the point I retrieved my call log on my phone to show the number phoned. It was only at this point they accommodated us on to a table. I completely understand these things happen and all it would have taken was an apology (which was never received) to avoid our frustrated on being treated this way. We would have gone elsewhere due to this service, but given it was a Saturday, places were fully booked. However, after this the service was fine and the food was absolutely amazing. It was about £25 for a main and was absolutely delicious. Did get charged a different price for a meal compared to what was on the menu and an additional drink added to the bill, but they happily amended this.

A gem. I wasn’t expecting such quality. Portion sizes are real value for money. We chose starter portions as we weren’t ready for a full meal, however the quality, freshness and taste has made our minds up to return for full sized portions. Chowder is a real highlight. Would recommend.

The food was excellent with an excellent specials board. The food & choice of wines & beers was very good. Whilst it would be considered pricey for the local area, the quality of the food justifies such expense. Unfortunately the service is slow, whilst polite. It took 45 mins to clear our mains & then they wanted the table back, leaving little time for coffee. Extremely disappointing given everything else was excellent.

Chowder mainly tasted of cream with lots of carrot and celery, thank goodness only ordered a small bowl as could not have finished a larger one as bit sickening after a few spoonfuls. Vegetable soup was overly watered down and very bland, left half of it. Both served with cheap white bread. At these prices would expect homemade or artisan sourdough which would have really complimented the dish. Both dishes not seasoned correctly so if they can't get that right would be worried about them cooking the fish dishes. Chips tasted ok but were very dark brown.

We went out for a belated mothers day treat and have been here many times before and enjoyed. I ordered gluten free fish and chips and it was inedible thick batter which I could barely get my fork through and the inside was still wet batter, the fish wasn't cooked through properly. I want to forewarn others incase they waste their money as it's not exactly cheap. I'm not one to complain and wanted the rest of our party to enjoy their meal. There was a staff meeting going on while we were trying to enjoy our meal and the manager was calling people around and asking if they wanted a job and ripping up their cv's when they said no. Also the front of house staff was told she had something in her nose while I was eating, she went to the side to remove it but didn't wash her hands. Do better. 1 star as the oysters were lovely.

Our second visit - we visited last year for the first time & we’re blown away with the quality of food we’d had, so of course, we came back… Staff are so happy, friendly & helpful & really make you feel welcome the minute you walk in the door. Having enjoyed the fish platter last visit - I definitely recommend it (£90 for 2), it’s outstanding, a little overwhelming but, by god it’s good. This visit we opted for to share the mussels& salt & pepper squid to start & we weren’t disappointed. Plump juicy mussels - not one empty shell, creamy sauce, bread to mop up & squid cooked to perfection, crispy coating with a delightful tangy chilli salsa to accompany them. For mains we had hake with chorizo & tomato cassoulet which my husband was delighted with - tasty, beautifully cooked fish. I had the stone bass with wild mushrooms, potatoes & mussels was delicious & it was empty plates all round. No room for pudding but happy diners all round.

We live incredibly close within a few hundred steps, the prices rise and the value shrinks. Only had the seafood pizza recently on Boxing Day which was delicious and full of flavour and prawns, mussels, squid bits, smoked salmon and samphire, also steak etc which was delicious , we had it tonight so lacking in flavour, mussels mostly empty, tiny prawns and two larger with shell prawns full of entrails, large lump of squid dropped on top not inviting for eating, never had that before thought it was a lump of fish, and the tiniest ever bit of smoked salmon, the best flavour missing. Sorry Boathouse, we usually love your food, but if you are slipping in the quiet months get ready for the busy ones. Really disappointed and it was a Christmas gift. Staff not engaging, once order taken, too busy resetting tables on a quiet night. Sorry, usually great but sadly not tonight… have previously had much better value and service.

We ate here on 18/2 and enjoyed the chowder etc and decided to return on our last night. We only had chowder but it was nowhere near as nice and was mainly carrots and very little fish. We added clams and muscles so it cost £17 each. There were 2 muscles and 3 clams and very little haddock or broth. I mentioned it to the waitress who said she would tell the chef. We both awoke in the middle of the night with a severe tummy upset and had to ask for a late checkout as we were too sick to travel home to the Wirral. We were sick for 3 days and called the Boat House to tell them before leaving Amble what had occurred. I spoke to James, who is the Manager and he said he would pass it on to their ‘ third party’ who would investigate. We had only eaten cereal and fruit that day, so cannot imagine what else other than the chowder could have made us sick. I called back today (3 weeks later), as I had not heard anything and again spoke to James, who was very abrupt, no apology and told us the case was closed!!! He heard this over a week ago but didn’t bother to call us and I asked him why. He said because we hadn’t been in touch. As a ward manager, I know how important it is to follow up complaints but obviously James doesn’t. Absolutely unbelievable attitude. We will never set foot in this restaurant again.

This is our preferred choice for a seafood restaurant in Amble. And, as usual, our menu item of lunchtime choice was a starter of bread and olives, followed by a chowder.Having travelled quite widely in the coastal cities of Massachusetts and New England, we can easily say that the taste and quality of the Fishing Boat’s chowder is better than that we’ve eaten in America. Very disappointing ….. We had to send our fish and chips back as inedible …. Really thick overcooked batter around dried up fish and soggy greasy chips …. It was 3.45 and clearly leftover from lunchtime service ….. really poor at £14.95 per person ….Waitress brought two further plates of food …. These were better but still not great …tasteless and greasy . Definitely won’t be back !

We have eaten here twice, the first time we had the smoked haddock chowder, it was very good, when we paid the bill, we left a 15% tip. The second time we ate here I had the salt and pepper squid for £8.95, there were 5 small pieces of squid on a ton of lettuce and we had to pay for bread! My husband had Scallops (£13.00) and the portion was tiny, when we asked for the bill , the nice waitress pointed out that the service charge had been added, but was optional, I asked if this was a new practice and she thought not. It then occurred to us that we had not noticed it on the first visit and we also left cash on top of the bill, which the waitress that day must have known, we felt this was sly and wondered why they were adding the service charge in anyway, Also the waitress on the second visit did mention that quite a few people also leave cash, meaning they must be hoping the sly service charge was being missed and the staff were getting double tips. A very poor practice, such a shame to make us feel we had one pulled over on us, leaves a nasty taste along with the tiny portions!

Great food and excellent service. There is a comprehensive menu backed up by a ‘specials’ board. We both chose from from the specials and were not disappointed

Could have been so much better! This place and town are missing a trick, they should take note of their more successful, established neighbours who have been warmly and successfully welcoming tourists for decades. We popped in for a coffee and scone, we were seated in a dark corner of a large, empty restaurant. This place has 180 degree harbour views but not that we would have known being sat in the only viewless, lightless table which was right next to what I pressure is the manager/owner who was conducting his business affairs. We ordered two scones, coffees and other snacks. The cheese scone was tasteless and the fruit scone had at most two raisins and a funny taste that suggested they were not fresh. This trip had the potential to be a reoccurring, firm family favourite, what a shame. Must try harder Amble.

Managed to get a table for 3 and not disappointed. Service was excellent and the food even better. The starters of mussels were superb and mains of loin of cod with clams, and roasted sea bass were brilliant. Would recommend to anyone who likes fish.

The Old BoathouseSeafood · ££AmblePLACE DETAILS Photo of Mike MuirMike Muirjust nowI'm afraid it was pretty dreadful. After having 2 amazing evenings at the Fish Shack, this was really disappointing. The sea bass was cooked at too low a temperature, so the skin was soggy and the fish actually not cooked; the sauce was warm, without bread or even a spoon to mop it up. No plate to put shells in. The squid as a starter was cooked at too low a temperature so a bit soggy. The squid in the main course had been boiled up for too long and was really rubbery. The marinara sauce was undercooked (it tasted like the tomatoes had come straight out of a tin). No sense of a fish stock anywhere. Oh, and the expensive wine wasn't chilled. No-one came over to check if we were ok... although we were asked at the end 'was it alright?'. It was so disappointing, especially as the sister restaurant (the Fish Shack) had amazing food and excellent customer service. If you're in Amble, go to the Fish Shack. Or Jaspers, which is a bit more expensive but has amazing attention to detail. We've never complained before, anywhere....LikeShareAdd a photo

Often eat at the boathouse but today it was awful. Chips were soaked in oil as was the starter squid. The langoustines were soggy and the service was haphazard. We were all very disappointed.

We dined at the restaurant twice with our two whippets in tow. It was an absolute delight both times. The staff on both occasions were lovely and helpful. On our first dinner, we chose specials of stone bass and monkfish both of which were delicious. On the second, we had squid, chowder and fish and chips - all of which were super. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. It was lovely to keep our dogs with us and it is great to see more restaurants becoming dog friendly!

Found the access very difficult to see. Were three adults one being wheelchair dependant. Were lead through narrow gap to our seat, serving staff were very helpful .Meal was not as good as expected reading others reviews.DISABLED TOILET!!!What a laugh if only it had been very narrow corridor with disabled toilet at far end no turning space, toilet was accessed passing sink setting off hand dryer, impossible to offer any assistance to my husband Toilet set on angle that wheelchair could not get infront of or sideways.no alarm call system in place, then had to reverse out taking several trys, raising his stress levels, the reverse down narrow passageway to get back to bar area where he could turn around. This will make a return visit impossible.Would love to know what planning officer approved these facilities as appropriate for disabled users.!!!!!!

As per title. The food cannot be faulted, perfect, fresh, delicious and cooked to perfection. However, we walked in to a friendly lady who seated up in a lovely window table with a great view. From here it nosed dived. We were waited on by a young girl who clearly turned up for the money and not much else. We were rushed for drinks and tried to rush to order starters. These were not far from checked on our tabke front of us and then waited a long time to have them cleared away. The same with our mains. After finishing them we had to wait for 20 minutes before another waitress realised from the other side came and cleared them and gave us the bill. Our un caring original waitress had got some food and just sat down or was just aimlessly milling about around the bar area. When we did get the bill we were told the service charge of 10% was already added. What a p*#s take telling us after we have asked for the bill to make it more hassle to get it changed and taken off. This is a con and disgusting behaviour. Be aware and make sure you aren't treat like fools.

Although it was November, the sun was out and we sat outside. The server was polite & very friendly. Had a mixture of dishes including some oysters - all really REALLY good. they had a good selection of fish that were caught that day, so the menu does change, but that what you want from a fresh fish restaurant!

We have been here a few times before normally staying in a hotel as we live 100 miles away. Sad to say how disappointed we where this time the food was all heavily salted, not much choice on menu, the chowder was just a heavily salty mush of fish and undercooked onion, I had chilli and salt squid it was also seriously salted my main was a steak as I was eating it my husband asked what the black thing was , it looked like boiled something it turned out my steak has been put on a napkin and all the juice from the tomatoes and food had absorbed in napkin you couldn’t tell it was a napkin !My husbands fish was average the samphire and mange tout and broccoli was laced in sea salt making it almost inedible, we asked for bread and it came slightly stale , the overpriced £ 20 bottle of white wine was warm we also noticed the glasses they served wine in where the size of Sherry glasses .The only thing good about the meal was the girl serving us was pleasant, sadly The Old Boathouse has changed its not the quaint quality driven place it used to be its lost it’s charm and it’s certainly lost it’s menu it was also seriously overpriced , and the additional service charge that was slapped on the bill just added insult to injury.

We went especially for the seafood platter. Fabulous food and I think we did it justice. It came on a board but the table was a bit small for it. Would have preferred crab to whole sea bass but everything on the board was beautifully presented and delicious. Would visit again when in the area.

We thought we were going to a specialist fish restaurant but there was hardly any fish available. Admittedly it was a difficult time of year to obtain fresh fish, soon after New Year, but by the time we arrived at 7pm the only fish left on the specials board was salmon and as to the main menu, we did not go here for fish and chips, and the only other fish apparently still available was sea bream. However, when we tried to order this we were told there was none and that it would be sea bass instead, which we had little choice but to order. To be fair, the bass was tasty and well cooked, and the accompanying potatoes were also pleasant, but the other vegetables were over cooked. For our first course, we both had prawn and crayfish salad. This was pretty dreadful. There were a large quantity of small peeled prawns, indistinguishable from what one might obtain from a supermarket, and utterly devoid of flavour. The crayfish was tastier, but dry in texture. There was no salad other than that the dish was lined with a lettuce leaf. I don’t know if there was a shortage of bread, but we were served just half a slice of bread each alongside this starter. We chose a Petit Chablis from the pricier end of the wine list and (although it wasn’t brought to the table until we had already finished our first course) this was good. However, overall our experience was one of considerable disappointment

Party of three. Drinks and starters came quickly. Good bread board. Fish soup tasty but lukewarmLong wait for mains. After about twenty minutes ordered more drinks which arrived twenty minutes later.Main courses arrived for two, with buttered greens for the other diner. By the time his main arrived the greens were cold. By the time they were replaced he’d finished his main course.Pizza poor. Not cooked as requested and missing some ingredients. The house salad ordered to go with the pizza never arrived. The salt and chilli squid was good. The small clams were so gritty they were inedible. Apparently ‘they sometimes come like that. We give them a rinse but they’re still gritty.’The items we complained about (and the salad which ever arrived) were removed from the bill without complaint, apart from the clams which are likely to be gritty apparently.Pleasant and friendly service. Food very disappointing.

This is the fourth time we have visited the Old Boat House but it never fails to delight. We arrived ahead of time but this was no problem. Service was just right. Not rushed but attentive. We both had the Chowder with smoked haddock and corn which was amazing the crayfish and prawn salad. Too much food but too good to leave. We will be back and back and back .

It was our first visit for nearly two years and what a wonderful experience it was for both of us. We loved the refurbishment and the meal was as excellent as we remembered from past visits. All of the staff were very pleasant, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. We had a really lovely evening which what we needed to be honest having had to be extremely careful due to vulnerability. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals - clean plates must be an indicator of their quality as was the presentation. We don't go out for a meal looking for faults, and if we did, we couldn't have found any.My wife selected from the Christmas menu and she enjoyed every mouthful: Ham Hock Roulade, Lemon & Tarragon Fillet of Hake finishing with Salted Caramel Fondant; what a start to Christmas. (She took the same course as Mary Berry so must know something about food! )I had the New England Clam Chowder which was perfect followed by the Shell Fish Steamer Pot both of which were delicious finishing with the Rice Pudding which was excellent. Believe me there is a wow factor with all of our dishes! The whole team should be proud of the service and satisfaction they provide and it was lovely to see Claire back at the Old Boat House. Thank you all for a truly lovely evening. We'll be back..

Corvi's is a first class no frills place to eat, excellent food, proper chips and huge portions, you certainly won't leave hungry, staff are pleasant and attentive, it's very good value for money, we try to lunch their as often as we can, if your in Berwick try it you won't be disappointed.

Bought cod bites, smoked sausage and large chips on 28 June. While the first two items were well-cooked, the chips were a bare pass, and were greasy in places. Although reasonable overall value for money (£9.50), I've had far better elsewhere. Servers were quite friendly.

I've never been disappointed with the food I have ordered from here and I've been coming here since I was a child way back in the 60's and 70s to the present day. These days I can bearly manage a pensioners meal ( fish bite and chips) as they are so big, I usually have a pot of coffee too....keep up the good work

AS always, on the first night of a week away, we go for Fish and Chips for dinner. This one happened to be less than 5 minutes from our holiday house. There was a queue on a Saturday Night - with a passing local stating that this outlet was the best in town. She was not wrong. Crispy, fluffy chips. Crunchy batter. White fish. Good portion size. Friendly service. Happily use again. Good price as well. Well done all.
