In all the years we have been coming here, the service was way below normal.asked for cod bites got scampi, had to pay extra for chips after already paying for my order .then got all the too the car park ,and served my husband and granddaughter, to find their was no chips with God bites .so had to walk back u to the fish shop and complain, the young gir l served me ,she was helpful. But no apology. Won't be going back

Whenever we're on holiday in the area we always make sure to get fish and chips from here at least once. The chips are really tasty and the portion sizes are decent. The fish was a good size, well cooked and with crispy batter. The staff are always really helpful and friendly. There is sometimes a bit of a wait as it's so popular and the food is freshly cooked. But it's well worth it! Having tried all options in Amble, I can confidently say the best fish and chips are at the Harbour Fish Bar!

Absolutely delicious large haddock and chips...more like a whale!

Waited over 20 mins for food which only consisted of sausage and chips and 2 x chips. Only to get home and not even half portion of chips in cartons, was left hungry. I understand the pressure during busy periods but perhaps waited until staff are fully trained and confident before putting them under that kind of pressure. Staff were also quite rude. Really don't understand the high reviews for this place.

It’s got nice food but to say it’s temporary closed.. first it’s closed Tuesday then said Thursday then now they are saying it’s going to be open Friday.. just be honest and tell everyone your not opening up at all.. the kitchen looks the same and it hasn’t changed so what’s the point of closing in the first place.

Fast, friendly service and fantastic chips!

AS always, on the first night of a week away, we go for Fish and Chips for dinner. This one happened to be less than 5 minutes from our holiday house. There was a queue on a Saturday Night - with a passing local stating that this outlet was the best in town. She was not wrong. Crispy, fluffy chips. Crunchy batter. White fish. Good portion size. Friendly service. Happily use again. Good price as well. Well done all.

Very busy. Food was nice but large cod not much different from medium.

Lovely battered sausage and fish but hardly a chips whatsoever ??? We paid £20 for a sausage, fish and a regular chips but only got around 20 chips between the both of us ? Not a regular in the slightest. Also travelled 20 minutes for this as we are currently away but this is the closest chippy, not really worth the journey.

Shit I payed 2.90 for a regular there is 2 option small or regular I get not even 50 chips I waited 30mins and get nothing bured my Tonge and they do not have good service worst chippy ever

Freshly fried cod was really nice, chips were also very good

Asked for a large cod to be fried. when I got it home and unwrapped it the batter was very dark and saturated in oil. chips were ok but I only managed half of the fish as the oil was just too much. when finished I realised that there was so much oil, it had collected in the base of the box and soaked through. I was going to put it down to a one off or a bad day, but that night I couldn't sleep for upset stomach and indigestion. woke up next morning to a full weekend stuck in the house with sickness and diarrhea. Sadly not impressed and not what i was expecting after eating here on and off for over 20 years.

Fish and chips were nice but there was so many bones, which was a shame. I was so looking forward to these, was let down by the amount of bones the odd few are understandable, but this was way more, if it wasn't for the queue in the shop I would have brought it back to show the staff how bad it was

If I’d realised I was going to spend so long waiting for fish and chips and a potion of chips (£13) I’d have taken a snack to eat while I waited ! Ridiculous waiting time for overpriced mediocre fish and chips .

Been 4 times over the years and bones in the fish everytime and when you tell the staff they make it sound as your yhe only one! £35.00 in the bin everytime. NEVER AGAIN.

Tried this place as it had the best reviews on Google and it did not disappoint. Great scampi and chips, my husband enjoyed his fish, prices are on the top side but the food was worth it.

Regular holiday visitor. Never lets you down. Brilliant fish and chips. Ok - you have to try and understand the queue system but it’s really not hard. Talk to the other customers. Great staff.

The battered cod from here was absolutely delicious, but I mistakenly ordered large and it was too much for me to eat !! The curry sauce was good too

I don't know what has happened here, used to be good, but not now. staff have not got a clue, even though the place was full, nothing ready and only cooking things to order. It is then taken straight from the fryer , without time to drain and then crumpled up in paper like a football, when opened ,was just a greasy mess with under cooked chips. When the place is full, at a guess, people will want Fish and chips, extras could be cooked to order. How the place still gets good reviews ,i do not know.

Absolutely superb…. Haddock and Cod battered is an absolute delight…. The chips remind me of how they tasted back when I was a kid .. (in the 70’s)…. I don’t think I’ve ever had anything similar back home in Leicestershire that comes close to one in Amble…. Lovely welcome…. Cheers

Unreal. Best fish and chips I've had. We were visiting with family and saw the locals flocking to this one. There is a queue and a bit of a wait as they cook your fish to order but I would take that over a fried piece of cardboard that's been sitting there for hours any day! They use beef fat and the taste is amazing. Also the staff are lovely. There was a mixup with our chips as one in our party didn't want vinegar and they sorted it instantly with a new portion of chips. We will definitely return if we go to Amble again!

Had a great meal from here - family fish and chips with a couple of sausages too. Very nice, chips were excellent - lovely new crop of spuds and very generous portions. The fish was cooked perfectly and was a good size, only comment is that they didn’t use rice cones on the fish prior to battering - so it didn’t quite stick to the fish - fell off and was a bit messy. The little wooden forks are also a bit useless - But honestly, that just a whinge - overall very good. 😊

People moaning about having to wait in reviews, get a grip!! If there’s no one in it speaks volumes, it’s busy as it’s popular plus summer season. Lovely chippy, well done staff.

Very good service, clean and polite service, the young girl in the counter was very polite, the lady who was the boss I believe was with her team working, food was tasty, chicken burger, jumbo sausage, beef burger were all cooked to perfection. Just off the harbour, we joined a cue of people waiting for the fish and chips, the wait was well worth it, the cod in batter was cooked perfectly and just fell apart so fresh, proper chippy chips and mushy peas to accompany the fish just lovely.

What's happened to this place? It's a shambles! Just called in with the family and waited 45 minutes, despite the queue not being that long! Slowest service ever, totally disorganised, a bunch of clueless youngsters running it, not the usual service at all. The chips were undercooked, the fish was greasy. After ordering, we stood and waited by the counter for 10 minutes before they realised that no-one had put the chicken nuggets in we asked for! Everyone in the queue was in disbelief at the service. We were compensated with some cans of pop. This has gone from being the best fish & chip shop in Amble to the worst!

Haddock is served with the skin on! Awful I don't like fish with the skin left on. I was so looking forward to having some fish and chips after reading the reviews. I was so disappointed! Paid £8 for a medium haddock to have black skin battered left on. Only ate the top part and to add the haddock was thinly sliced and just nothing to it. Never again. My husband got haddock and chips and we both said we would never go there again! Such a disappointment

Absolutely terrible chips - soggy and uncooked. I have had fish and chips from here before and it was absolutely fine but I would not recommend going there.

We thought we'd pop in for fish and chips on a Sunday afternoon as a treat. After waiting outside in a queue for 10 minutes we entered the fish shop which was packed. It was clearly very busy but with half an hour before closing we thought we would be served. But unfortunately not, we were told if you wanted fish it would be another half an hour wait. Doubt we would have been served anything, as there wasn't much else on offer which was already cooked. So disappointed! We left as did many people. What's going on? Used to be a great takeaway, great service and food.

Absolutely disgusting! Chips were undercooked and service was not pleasant. It’s now the next day and my whole household are unwell. Wouldn’t recommend unless you want a bodily cleanse.

Decided to try here because of the great reviews. Usually when in the area I go the the quayside chippy around the corner. Unfortunately I was a little disappointed at the fish and chips. Chips were a bit soggy and the fish so thin it was dry. Not the delicious flakey cod I was expecting. Was actually hard to tell what fish it was. I have no idea how this place gets such good reviews. The fish batter is often really oily and they place it on top of the chips that aren't crispy, which makes the chips soggy and greasy. Fish inside the batter is overcooked and dry. Annoying that there aren't any good fish and chip takeaways in Amble. Carlos in Alnwick is so much better. Shame.

Just enjoyed a diner of fish and chips the battered cod the best I think I've ever eaten. Perfectly cooked fish in the most light and crisp batter. The staff are lovely and friendly. Our meal here was not just the highlight of the day but one of many on our wonderful holiday in Northumberland.

Curry sauce is not chippy curry sauce it’s full of raisins and sultanas

We were very impressed with the fish and chips from here. The service was quick and the food was still hot when we got back to our cars. Delicious!

Looks like they are going to lose a couple of customers, chips were nice but the fish was a total rip off. I had a large fish, it was sort of large but that was because of the batter, fish must have been about 18mm thick and very tough to eat. Why ! They can see the size of fish before they coat it in batter and fry it, so they know they are ripping you off. Pity, we’ve been coming here for a while now. But I vote with my feet.

Has this place changed hands? We've been going for years and always enjoyed the friendly service and the excellent fish and chips. However, during our last visit the chap who served us, only after his colleague had asked him to return to the counter to serve me, seemed incapable of grasping the most simplest of order, only to disappear again in the back room. I wasn't sure what we were going to get, but luckily his super friendly colleague yet again stepped in and put our order up. It wasn't what I had ordered but I was happy to just get something. Fish and chips were ok, but not the size I ordered nor the usual good quality. Sorry, will be giving it a miss for a little while

Really disappointing. Bought two medium cod and chips today. Very little fish, which was dried out / overcooked - mostly batter. Chips were abundant but soggy. To sum up - big on quantity, poor on quality.

Fish and Chips and a kiddies meal. Fish was heavy on the batter. Chips overcooked dark brown . The type you would throw in the bin and I did. Used to be the go to fish shop in Amble. I can only assume that it has new owners. I will not be back. Staff seemed very nice

Always pop in here while in amble it's proper homemade food cooked to order so you wait a little longer but definitely worth it for freshly cooked fish and chips The jumbo cod was absolutely fantastic with big thick chunks of white fish and the chips were large not like some places where they seem like all odd shapes and scraps put together The staff work really hard and the place is always busy Tip if your wanting the jumbo fish order as soon as you go in as they are cooked to order If your in amble and want fish and chips definitely give this place a try out you won't regret it

Absolutely my favourite chippy and have been coming here since I was a kid.

Excellent fish and chips, with a choice of portion sizes.

Really good batter, crispy on both sides of the fish (you can hear it crunch in the video). Probably the best beef-dripping fried batter. Not as much leftover grease (or stickiness on your tongue) as most chippies, even for their scraps. Good-sized piece of cod, although slightly thin. Would revisit because the batter is addictive, even though the grease gets a bit too much for me at the end (so eat it fast before it cools!)

Very popular fish and chip shop in Amble. The sizeable queue at certain times is a sign of its popularity. The food was excellent and I have been a few times. Prices are comparable with other fish and chip shops in the area.

I ordered a large chips and I got about to handfuls of chips and paid over £6 for them total rip off I'm not impressed!

Really not sure what the recent reviews were wanting. After reading the most recent reviews I wondered if the place had changed hands or gone downhill. We tried it anyway and it couldn’t have been much better. We had 2 small cod, 2 large sausage and 5 chicken nuggets, peas and curry sauce + bottle of Heinz sauce for £35. All very tasty and more than we could all eat (with 2 hungry fussy teenagers)!

Fantastic fish and chips. They also accept card payments which was fantastic. Will use again soon Update for 2024 -the quality has really deteriorated over the last few months. Fish is very thin, over cooked / dry with soggy batter. Battered sausages are soggy and cold and chips are too oily and lacking there normal refinement. This has been witnessed over 2 separate visits where I have spent over £45.00 each time. Staff are still excellent and you can't beat their curry sauce.

Always such a busy place! We went here for the usual fish and chips and even on such a busy evening, you wasn't waiting long to be served for your food to be served into boxes and passed to you. The place is run like a well oiled machine and the busyness tells you how good the food is too. Highly recommended if visiting Amble.

The service and quality is very good. The curry sauce is excellent.

A traditional fish and chip shop that still uses beef dripping for frying in. For those from days gone by, like myself, you can't beat it. Really good portions served by staff who are happy to serve and go above and beyond to help you with any questions. Highly recommended.

Disappointed that the chip shop was closed on Sunday 19th 2023 Checked website and it states open 11.30 - 3.00 pm So we drove from Ellington to find chip shop closed on Sundays Very annoyed that your website is out of date and not been updated We had your fish and chips last year and they were great hence the revisit this year

Absolutely appalling food. Cold chips and grossly overcooked fish that was more batter than fish. Been patronising this chippy for over 20 years when visiting Northumberland and I most certainly will not be doing again.

Very efficient service and excellent food.

Very clean and nice fish bar, staff are polite and the lady that served us also shared my hatred of scraps or as I call it "fish eczema" Nicely priced for two large chip butties, gravy & curry sauce. Now the reason for the loss of one star. It's not because of people up north being incapable to make fishcakes as we do in Yorkshire no it's down to the fact the curry sauce tasted like a jar of patak's curry sauce had been poured over a dry Christmas fruit mix and let it stew for most of the day. So if you avoid said tub of questionable concoction it's a really nice place to eat
