Absolutely incredible, the bathrooms are massive, the staff are incredibly nice especially Jeanette (photo),the food was lovely.

Been coming here for 30 years, and was our daughter’s first try of fish and chips at just one year old, holds very special memories for me x

Lovely place to eat. I would recommend booking, the queue was out the door. Yummy fish dishes.

Classic chip shop and restaurant, gets busy

Really rude waitress, I had a sticker inside the fish pie and I didn’t even heard any sorry. The food tastes no flavour too.

The attitude of this waitress was very bad, at first the cutlery was just uncleaned spoons and plates, I asked this waitress to change it, she was very angry and told me to please change it, it was obvious that this was a hygiene issue of the restaurant cutlery, and later when we found a plastic foreign object in our food, she had a very bad attitude too, and she kept on trying to find ways to excuses and avoid saying that it wasn't the restaurant's problem. All in all it was a very bad experience coming to this restaurant and I even suspect that this waitress was racist!

cod very overcooked. apparently local fishermen now only bring in shell fish so cod is not local to whitby. I get the impression that the fish and chip outlets are just for tourists.

Always amazing fish and chips and good service. Always full, so glad we have a habit to book it ahead of time.

I can't understand why they didn't give me an extra teacup when I asked for it. I'm speechless🙄 The waiter kept stealing glances at us. We were being watched while drinking tea. Very bad.

Just came back from whitby stayed 5 days tried other fish chip shops ,takeaways ,magpie cafe in out opinion was miles better than anywhere elsewhere. Chips were fantastic and cod was best ever tasted

I had the salmon which was delicious. I tried my partners chips but all I can say is that they tasted of cooking oil. I would not have them. Staff and service good. Tables are very close together.

We had a family meal here recently - one of the party is gluten free. The gluten free fish and chips was absolutely amazing - light crispy and the fish was simply Devine! Our waitress Audrey was so helpful and friendly . Well done the Magpie- outstanding yet again - will most certainly be back

One of the best in Whitby, despite lots of competition. We went for fish and chips and scampi and chips and mushy peas. Averaged around £10 a person. The fish was fresh and tasty. Scampi was buttery with large prawns. Mushy peas were a decent portion and thick.

We booked a table to avoid having to queue, our server was very friendly and helpful and the food was of a high standard. Would definitely recommend and we would eat here again.

Visited this place on the 25th October 2024, ordered two times cod and chips, the cod was like chewing string it was very dry, we would say they were over cooked. Very disappointed.

Good fish and chips, looking at the big queue we opted for the take away and thought of slumming it with the Seagulls. No queue, and some beautiful crisp cod and chips….Hhmm delicious.

Heard it was the best fish and chips in Whitby and it didn’t disappoint. Delicious Fish & Chips especially the large ones and if you have tea with your meal then their Yorkshire Tea is so good. Recommend this to anyone going to Whitby.

After reading mixed reviews of Magpie cafe I wanted to at least eat at your cafe.I booked a table for 2 people on 21st October 14.00. I could actually smell the strong odour of fish as I entered the cafe. This is a big sign of bad fish. We ordered 2 plates of haddock and chips. I have to give you an honest review The consistancy of the haddock was mushy with a slime coating on the outer surface. It wasn't the worst tasting batter I have ever tasted, but certainly wasn't the best. Very very greasy. Chips were very undercooked. Oh there's more- Coming from a fishing town I know when the fish is fresh or bad, and your haddock should not have been served to customers. Within half an hr of only eating half of the haddock myself and husband started suffering from stomach cramps etc. The meal for 2 people cost £40.60 Sorry but you cannot justify the shocking price of a bad meal. Sea towns fish should taste fresh no excuse.

Such a great selection of seafood dishes and a great experience every time we visit. Service is great too. Recommend booking a table so you don't have to queue.

Amazing fish and chips. The fish is so fresh and just flakes. This is the only place that uses fresh fish, well worth the price when in Whitby.

We had booked for our lunch meal and stated two of us had mobility issues. We got up steps and was quite rudely told to move to the side whilst other customers exited The young man who escorted us to the lift was awesome as we're our waitresses But when it came to pay the receptionist again was very rude and abrupt However it didn't spoil our lovely meal that we had and the great service from the other staff! We had a Fish and Chips takeaway today at Magpie Cafe takeaway, and it was crap, all the reviews all say you have to go to Magpie for fish and chips !

Fabulous food. Monkfish & Mussels and Haddock & Chips. Had Lindisfarne oysters too which were really good. We had 2 children with us & they're meals could not be faultrd either. Service and Staff were very good too

One of the places to visit in Whitby. There are plenty of other fish restaurants, but this is the best. Booking in advance is a good idea, as it gets very busy.

There are so many places offering fish and chips in Whitby, but this has to be the best. The haddock and cod were perfectly cooked, as were the chips cooked in beef fat. Topped off with tea, bread and butter. Excellent service and reasonably priced. Recommended

3rd visit to Whitby but 1st visit to Magpie cafe. only waited 5mins for a table. Served quickly, food arrived nice and hot. Thought the fish wasn't the best I've ever had but still tasty nice. Best mushy peas I've tested. Great meal.

Food 5star, warm glasses with melted ice not good

I have been visiting Whitby for over 20 years, and Magpies is always an essential visit. Unfortunately, on our recent visit it was anything but a good experience. The fish looked like it was cooked from frozen, not fresh, and tasteless. The chips were really poor and thin and also looked like they had been reheated. The waitress did get the meal swapped for me, but the next plate was the same. I have always had great food and service from Magpies, but even the customer service was overall poor. We left and the next day went to Trenchers, which was a 100% better experience. We will be back, but we expect better.

Had been looking forward to visiting (on holiday from Australia) after researching best fish and chips in UK. Was not disappointed! Excellent service and food. Highly recommend!

The food was amazing battered haddock real chips and mushy peas followed by cherry sundae which was also amazing I will visit again There were views over the harbour too

We weren’t wanting a big lunch so didn’t eat in the restaurant and just stopped by the takeout window to try some chips. I have to say, I’m not sure what the fuss is about. The taste was ok, but I found them quite hard and there were lots of overcooked bits in the bottom of the box which ended up getting thrown away. Definitely not my favourite.

Best fish and chips well worth a visit

Visited our favourite seafood restaurant last Saturday as a party of four. Unfortunately the service was very slow. Drinks took an age. So did the food. When the mains came only three plates arrived. We waited an age for the fourth. Not good. There were other issues with the food. I later spoke to the Manager, Duncan, on the telephone which I have never done before in the 30 years coming to the restaurant. I was appalled by his attitude and manner. Leaves a sour taste I'm afraid.

Food was banging, we orders two haddock and chips which were £11.90 each. The haddock was a good size and it tasted spot on.

Stopped by for lunch today. It was very busy but the staff were friendly and helpful. Food arrived as expected. My OH had the sausages as he doesn’t do fish. I had the Mussels with Chips and a brioche roll. Having had mussels many times in France, I have to say these were THE BEST mussels I have ever had. Huge mussels with a beautiful sauce and a bowl of the most delicious crispy chips. Accompanied with a lovely glass of chilled Pinot. Sadly I couldn’t finish the sauce.

I have book a table for 2 , but more friends decided to join us and it surprised us all. Really good and fresh seafood. Highly recommend!

Visited @ 4:30 pm on Saturday. It was very busy and we had a short wait to get a table. Staff were friendly and welcoming. We didn't have to wait long to order food and drinks. I ordered a regular haddock and chips with a cappuccino. The fish and chips were not the best I've ever had, but they were definitely pretty good. Overall, it came to £40 so the value was average.

Great cafe. Four of us visited on a wet October day. We had a (huge) pot of tea for 4 of us. Our meals were cod, chips and peas, crab and chips, ham salad and hot seafood pot. Service is quick, staff are friendly and courteous and the food is delicious. The seafood pot is delicious, chick full of clams, mussels, samphire, salmon, crevettes etc in a delicious broth with a large ciabatta roll. Cod in batter is huge and cooked to perfection, the crab and chips is a large crab, red and white meat, the ham is local, thick slices with hot buttery new potatoes and coleslaw. We all enjoyed our lunch and left well satisfied, we will be back!

Great food with perfect service. Everything is cooked to order so don't expect instant food, it will be however some of the best fish and chips you'll ever eat. Wonderful crispy chips and perfect batter all done with fresh fish. I do recommend coming here but be prepared to wait when it's busy.

The quintessential comfy seafood restaurant by the sea complete with lots of history and a fantastic menu. Plus it’s very conveniently located for those exploring this area of Whitby.

The magpie cafe has become a regular choice when in Whitby, consistent in terms of food quality, service and ambience. It gets busy (to be expected), so booking advisable. Tried the skate wing this time which was spot on.

I first came to The Magpie over 20 years ago with my husband, had a really lively and memorable meal, I always eat here when I return to Whitby, a nice cosy atmosphere and really delicious food. See you again soon!

We went on Monday lunchtime and were shown to a lovely table upstairs. We both ordered small haddock and chips with mushy peas curry sauce and a pot of tea. Our food was served in a timely fashion and was faultless. All in all a wonderful experience great service and fantastic food.

Top class fish and chip restaurant and take away. Decent menu with a range of dishes, soups of the day and specials. Food was hot and very tasty, I had the Crab bisque soup, followed by Haddock and chips, which were delicious 😋 Highly recommended, I would advise booking a table, as walk in might have to wait for a table. Family friendly with views over the harbour. I'm sure there were restrooms, but I didn't use them. Beers and ciders available. No parking and disabled access may be an issue.

Outstanding food and service. Despite being a party of 8, we only had to queue for a short time and the staff made the wait easier for the elderly members of our group by offering seats for them. The staff members were friendly and up for a good laugh, joining in with our jokes. The fish was fresh and very tasty, and the portion sizes provided more than enough for a filling meal. The team also surprised us with a cake and song for the birthday we were celebrating. We can't recall everyone's name, but Jeanette deserves an extra-special shout-out! Would definitely recommend!!

Wonderful food and efficient service with friendly staff. We timed our arrival perfectly so we were shown to a table straight away. On leaving there was a big queue waiting to go in so very popular.

I can't give enough stars to magpies, we had a regular haddock with chips each and there was still more food than we needed, the food was absolutely divine, hands down, the best fish and chips in the uk, every time we visit we are blown away by the quality of the food. The staff are also wonderful and made our evening so pleasureable.100% worth a 4 hour drive, many thanks team for making our 25th anniversary a special treat

Takeaway - the fish was terrible. Over cooked and dry as a bone.

Was dubious at how nice it could be as is apparently best chippy in Whitby, but was best fish and chips I have had. Don't know how they make there mushy peas but they were unbelievable. Friendly staff too. Book a table if you can though as can get very busy.

Apart from a few steps into the building then up to the first floor where the staff showed us to our table. Can't rate the fish and chips enough, only had a mini but still filling. Staff very helpful and polite. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Went here on tues 24 sept wasn't disappointed the fish cake snd chips was delicious it was a bit expensive but i have always said you only pay for quality and this was certainly quality so well done will definitely be back there next time would highly recommend this place to everyone you wont be disappointed

Great food but the mushy peas weren’t as good as expected.

This place is massively overrated. Too many tables crammed in it feels like your eating with the table next to you it’s that close. The fish is tasteless and just bland. Why people stand in line outside to visit this place blows my mind.

Great fish perfect. Cooked the star of the show!! ,. Not so good chips. I had high hopes but left feeling a little indifferent. With so many options in whitby I expected a little more.

Really friendly staff. Excellent food. A great place to eat. The prawn cocktail starter was delicious. We also had the white baite. This was my first time trying it, but it wasn't for me. The other people with me really enjoyed it, though. I can also recommend the crab and chips and the scampi.

Found the haddock rather bland and tasteless but the batter was enjoyable. Chips or the fish were frozen not fresh and they pack you in like sardines. The staff are friendly though

Visited the Magpie cafe on our last day in Whitby. Was advised to book online due to the sometimes long queues but it was pretty quiet when we visited (4pm on a Thursday). Cod was the whitest of white and the best we have ever had and the chips, mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce also all good. Marking it down a star however, as we were seated downstairs and it was rather small and upon going to the toilet could see that the upstairs section had lovely views over Whitby harbour with more space, which we would have preferred. Happy with the price paid but menu way too over complicated. Would settle for a takeaway next time as don't feel it was worth paying the extra to sit in a cramped room and felt the dining experience was rushed.

Always good for fish and chips if you're in Whitby.

Had the Lindersfarne oysters to start. No super zingy ozone taste as in Cateret or Fecamp but Whitby is 70 so miles from the farm so can be expected. Delicious all the same. Had the mussels for main. Could have done with some more agitation during the cooking . The top mussels in the bucket were dry and slightly over cooked. Nice all the same once you get through the top layer, and they were busy and you need to take into account the pricing which is good. The bread lacked any visual appeal all together but was surprisingly fresh when tried, It may be made either on site or locally. Sourcing a good local bakery to compliment the food may be a good development. All in all for the price and location good value for money.

Ok, ask 10 different people which is their favourite chippy in Whitby and you'll get 10 different answers. For me though, the vote goes with the Magpie. Amazing fish cakes and the curry sauce is to absolutely die for. Friendly and prompt no-nonsense service, even during busy times. I love this place 😁

It's reputation is so great it is probably difficult to live upto. Bit scruffy in places. Need to keep the soare fixings cleaning materials etc behind a screen.

Fish and chips is just fish and chips the magpie delivers this but it’s a large establishment over several floors and lots of tables can be crowded but they find you a seat but you also might queue for a bit
