Ramshill Fisheries in Scarborough

Everything a UK fish and chip shop should be. Everything they serve is made with beef dripping, just as it should be, resulting in the quintessential fish and chips experience that has been missing from our nation since most began to use the far inferior vegetable oil to appease vegetarians/odd people. As someone who makes and uses beef dripping for all meals I make at home in Manchester, it can be difficult to find places to eat that carry the same ethos of making food in a natural, good and honest way. Beef tallow is rich in bioavailable fats, vitamin A and even vitamin K, which is good for eyes and skin. Anyway, I came here last year in the summer on recommendation from a fellow festival goer, and the staff here were kind enough to hang on from closing whilst I beckoned my friends who had just arrived to Scarborough on the promise that this was no normal chippy. The quality of their fish, the mastery of balance in flavour of their chips cooked in the dripping, I can honestly say this is the best fish and chip shop I’ve experienced since Nancy’s on Macc Road closed in the 90’s. As I’m attending the festival again this year, I’m secretly more excited to eat here again than I am to see any of the bands. Bravo, Ramshill Fisheries.

Llamé para mí y mi madre quería pescado y patatas fritas fue dicho por la señora sirviendo que no tenían patatas fritas uno de los Freidores tuvo que disparar al hospital que es bastante justo, había otros 3 trabajando pero nadie sabía cómo retumbar patatas un maldito mono podía retumbar patatas muy decepcionante.

Mejor en la ciudad de alguna manera. Constantemente de alto nivel y cocinado en goteo de carne de res para ese gran sabor a la antigua que tantos lugares han perdido por cocinar en alternativas más baratas. El joven y la chica que trabajan en el mostrador son encantadores y muy serviciales. Muy recomendable.

Take away fish and chips and curry sauce. Local to this shop, been many times. Tonight was different, the fish was overcooked and the chips dry. I rang to complain and a female said sorry, i said is that it then, and she said yes. Terrible customer service, will never go again.

Great serving size, and perfect ratio of batter and a bit cruncy. Chips are also quite good quality.

Polite and positive staff, good indicators of a good rep and sense of community judging by their patter with the locals. The food is fantastic. Everything is cooked in beef fat so it's just droolworthy. Ain't gonna make a fat boy slim but it's like, get-in-mah-belleh stuff. Try this place over the other chippies if your hotel is nearby or you can make the detour.

I go here whenever I’m in Scarborough. Staff are lovely and the food is cooked fresh . What more could one want ? I often have fish chips and a battered sausage… the whole hog , er , haddock

Started coming a few weeks ago as they open Friday lunchtime. My mum is elderly and can't eat late. Absolutely spot on in every way. Seems to be a regular clientele and they deserve it.

We were in the area for Easter weekend so we popped into Ramshill Fisheries on Good Friday Dinner. This was our first time using them and I can honestly say I only wish we lived closer! The staff were so friendly and accommodating 😊 I love that they use dripping and not the usual vegetable oil, which causes inflammatory reactions. The fish was meaty, tasty and battered perfectly, the chips were fresh and expertly cooked and the portion size was perfect. Its a definite 10/10 for us and we will be back every time we are in the area. I will also advise all of our friends and family to use them, because these days good chippies are hard to find!

Simple old fashioned chippy, with (as in the old days) a limited menu but everything done excellently. Popular with locals, and you've got to be a great chippy for that to apply in Scarborough! Highly recommended.

Not cracked up to the reviews it was getting no organised cues and they were either running out food on menu eg only 1 sausage left no large haddock no small fish I got last portion of scampi heard the young girl serving customers say we are running out of potatoes seriously. She said I can go home early.

This is with doubt the best Chippy in Scarborough which is down to the oil/dripping that they use, absolutely gorgeous. However the last two weeks something has changed, they've lost their trademark taste and the chips have been dry. Still the best but I do hope the usual service can resume.

This is our usual take away (3 times a week) when we come on holiday (3 times a year) to Scarborough… as normally they are excellent, consistent and cooked to perfection.... Unfortunately this week 3 times we have had: 1st time soggy greasy chips but fish OK. 2nd chips good but a bit cool and overcooked fish. Tonight chips perfect but fish overcooked again and dry. Sorry for the negative feed back but we love this takeaway normally and can't understand what's going on.

Wow! Don’t have a fish and chip supper here if the two old women are cooking! Unless you like dry and overcooked food. Why can’t they keep good standards when the boss is away? This place has gone down in my estimation as it’s the second time they’ve served us sub par food. The experience felt like an insult!

The Haddock was absolutely delicious, and the batter was nice and crispy. The curry sauce was lovely as well Chips unfortunately tasted dry and the beans were not great the battered sausage was not great either. Also asked for scraps but didn't get any. Called here on recommendation. Very busy which is a good sign so happy to wait. Asked for a dry teacake to make a chip butty. It was the smallest teacake ever. Maybe a Warburtons one in the blue bags. Had margarine on it (I hate margarine and I asked for it dry so I could put butter on it myself). Said I didn't want scraps....covered in scraps. Fish was lovely but I might come across as being picky but eating out is an expensive treat and I expect the service to be spot on

I'm not saying this is the best fish and chip shop in Scarborough - but if any are better, they must be absolutely amazing. Excellent quality food all cooked to order, fried in beef dripping (of course), great service and good prices. You can even park on the road outside (may be tricky in summer).

There are many chip shops in Scarborough claiming to be the best. In this shop I can honestly say they are the best having been an avid user of our nations signature food over 50 years. As a foot note can I ask them to include Hollands steak and kidney puddings. Thanks Ed

I found this fish & chip shop on the Google maps. Only a 10 minutes walk from were my accommodation was.Friday night this business gets very busy. Staff customer service skills were very good. They close at 19.30 pm which came has a surprise to me. When you have paid for your order they give you a collection number. There is a collection point outside the premises were you collect your order from once a member of staff has shouted out your collection number. Food was delicious. Prices were reasonable. Yes I would go back to this takeaway next time I'm in Scarborough

We have just finished our small haddock, chips & scraps, & curry sauce and it was lovely. Closest chippie to our holiday flat but reviews were good and when I worked in Scarborough for a short while a few years ago it was recommended but I never had chance to pop in. After cycling over to Scarborough from Lancashire as you can imagine I was pretty hungry. This place was located near my hotel so I thought I'd give it a try. I certainly wasn't disappointed, large Haddock, chips and peas. The fish was cooked perfect, tender large fish with perfect crispy batter coating, really tasty. Chips and peas also excellent. Qué outside waiting for there orders but the staff are very efficient and it doesn't take long.
