Royal Fisheries in Scarborough

6 of us pre booked for tea was busy but we were seated no problem some confusion with order when it arrived mush peas were on a different plate and bread was missing tried to catch a member of staff but no joy advised when left and was removed from the bill. Food was good attention to detail was definitely missing not sure if it was our table but staff did not seem to look after us that well which was a shame. As the food was pretty good

In my opinion I don't think a trip to Whitby is complete without a visit to the Royal, the stave are very friendly and pleasant. Never before have I seen a fish and chips shop have crinkle chips which I thinks adds a nice touch for presentation and overall chip enjoyment. In a increasingly expensive fish and chip market, the Yorkshire deal is definitely worth the price. The batter had a healthy colour good crispness and did not get soggy and drop off which is top marks from me.

Ate here with family over the Easter holidays. Fantastic service and excellent food - so nice to have a fish and chip shop that actually does 'small' portions! Not cheap but definitely worth the money.

Called in as we were passing, lured in by the aroma of fresh fish and chips. Best portion of chips we have had in ages, nice size, dry crisp chips and not pretentiously double or treble cooked - good honest grub. Can't say anything about atmosphere, we had a takeaway.

Popped in quite late in the day. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. They even arranged some veg oil chips for my vegetarian wife. The food was excellent as well.

I arrived at 12:15 pm. The restaurant was quite peaceful, with a pleasant lack of crowds. The service was friendly and attentive. I enjoyed a large haddock and chips, mushy peas, a slice of bread and butter, and a pot of tea. It was delicious and very satisfying. The restaurant was clean and well-maintained. The total cost in April 2025 was £ 20.50

absolutely amazing gluten-free fish and chips! I had the best fish I’ve ever eaten at Royal Fisheries – beautifully cooked and full of flavour. The fact that they offer gluten-free fish, chips, and even vinegar was such a thoughtful and appreciated touch. It’s often hard to find proper gluten-free options that don’t compromise on taste, but this exceeded all expectations. The service was genuinely lovely – our waitress was so friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. We also ordered a children’s meal which was perfectly sized. They were more than happy for us to split it between our two little girls, which was ideal and really appreciated. Highly, highly recommend this place. We’ll definitely be coming back next time we’re in the area!A

Excellent fish and chips plus catered for Gluten free for a friend. Really enjoyed the meal and would return. The food was tasy and plentiful. The fish tasted so fresh.

We called in for dinner and there was a wait for a table of about 10/20 minutes as they were extremely busy but we eventually were taken to our table and duly ordered our food. The wait was not to long but the food was worth the wait as we all throughly enjoyed it, once again my review is for this particular visit because as we all know businesses don't get it right every time. But based on this visit I would recommend it and l would return to this establishment again .

Just eaten at Royal Fisheries. Absolutely brilliant. Excellent, friendly service and lovely white flakey fish. Excellent food and in our opinion much better than Magpie Fish and Chips. Definitely worth eating with Royal.

Only just found the place last month after many years of going to whitby and it is by far the nicest chippy, the fish is wonderful and the crinkley chips are just the best.

TODAY Very atmospheric place. bearable fish, but the staff works there as if they were punished. Lack of professionalism and arrogance. The only person who tried was nice a young man, but the ladies were very unpleasant, especially the one with slightly red hair.

When visiting Whitby, had this takeaway recommended. Great choice - friendly, quick service and large portions and good value for money.

Best Fish and Chip shop and restaurant in Whitby bar none, always freshly cooked, hard to find hidden up one of the side streets but well worth finding it, food is always freshly cooked and tastes amazing, great staff and good prices, go and check it out you won't be disappointed, it's our go to when we are in Whitby

Our first visit to this fish restaurant but we'll certainly be back. Good portions, well cooked and piping hot. Would definitely recommend. The staff were very efficient and friendly. Place was spotlessly clean.

Not many in on a cold wet windy night, the storm dying down. Got the Yorkshire deal, not massive but enough for us. Nice and tasty.

Came here after a recommendation from a landlord in Sandsend. Excellent Fish and Chips, much better than all the others we've had on the main drag. We'll definitely be back.

Usually visit Trenchers when in Whitby but having read reviews on here decided to give it a go and compare. Short wait before we were shown to our table, only a few minutes which was fine as much smaller inside. Nice and clean, hosts very pleasant and welcoming – omens were good. Decided on the Yorkshire Deals of small cod (£16.90) and large haddock (£20.50), both coming with chips, bread & butter and a pot of tea and mushy peas, if required. When delivered to the table both plates were steaming hot, well presented and looking very inviting. Lovely light crispy batter, fish cooked to perfection and chips a plenty were also very good. We both enjoyed our meals very much and polished off the lot with relish. In summary – very pleased we came here. Both meals were excellent – staff very pleasant and friendly and we thought good value for the quality of fayre on offer. Nothing not to like and we might just have found a new favourite in Whitby. Amazing food, lovely staff, super clean restaurant. Away from them son busy drag along the harbour, I’m reluctant to recommend this gem of a place ☺️. Do give it a go (but don’t tell anyone 😁).

I will preface this with 2 points: 1. The staff were fantastic, great service particularly from Alex, and did not miss a beat despite it being busy 2. I do not give bad reviews as a whole, I try to help hospitality businesses who are facing a difficult time right now.... That being said..... Whitby has a reputation for Fish and Chips, hence the preponderance of Fish and Chips takeaways, restaurants etc. This one had a high rating so when we saw queues snaking out of several other hostelries we came here. It was busy but we could get a table. The signs were there though. Prompt helpful service, got a table without a problem and a swift order with Alex. However.... the interior has the whiff of the service station about it. The tables reminded me of the Little Chef in the 1990s. Food did not match Little Chef though. Crinkle cut Chips which I have not had since 1980s. If you are serving chips as a speciality now they have to be double or treble cooked. These seemed reheated from frozen. Same with the fish. I had cod, my wife had half a haddock. Small oval plates. Soggy Fish with the batter at the base wet from moisture... presumably as a result of cooling from frozen? Really disappointing. Seems to be designed to rip of tourists which is how I felt. £40 for large cod, small haddock and 2 beers. A pub across the harbour is called The Fleece.... I was fleeced :(

Been here before a while ago and loved the food here so came back for another visit. Found the fish and chips was very good, but felt the batter was a bit light and the chips were good but not great, still a good fish and chips overall. Service and prices were brilliant.

Pequeño eglefino para mi esposa y una gran porción para mí. Hermosamente cocinado con masa crujiente, patatas fritas arrugadas, deliciosos guisantes con un delicado sabor ahumado, pan y mantequilla, regado con una olla de té. El restaurante está limpio y el personal de espera es atento. Nuestro nuevo lugar de “ir a” cuando visitamos Whitby.

Fish & chips used to be really nice here, been in today and they were tastless,i dont know if they have changed what they cook them in,also the horrible brown box is flimsy and ends up very greasy.

This is the second review that I have posted for Royal fish shop. Called in today 02/11/2024 and ordered Three Haddock and chips and asked for the skin taking off before cooking The staff were only too pleased to do this for me.... Result the best fish and chips EVER. My Son and Daughter in law totally agree. Thank you Royal.

It is a good place with nice food but very slow service due to a single employee working serving and more but it was nice

I have actually tried every fish and chip shop in Whitby since moving here 5 years ago and can now safely say that Royal Fisheries is definitely my fav by a long mile and they don't take the Michael with their prices. Never had a bad meal there. 2024 Update: After 10 years living in Whitby and then moving overseas a year ago; I've popped into Royal Fishertiea for a sit down meal and as always, it was outstanding. The cod was really tasty and the portion was overall spot on! All the staff are mega friendly and obviously work hard to keep the standards high in a very competitive restaurant/take away sector in Whitby.

Nice little chippy. Got a small fish and chips to take out, which came to £8.30 which I thought was brilliant as it's cheaper than a lot of the other chippies. To say it was a small portion, I found it very filling. Can't grumble.

I heard this was the best fish and chip restaurant in town, so was happy give it a try. Perhaps not as prominently situated as some of its competitors, but still relatively easy to find. We ordered cod and chips, and that's what we got. Tasted good.

We liked this place a lot. The fish and chips were spot on. Same price as all the others in town, for the food, there's obviously a cartel going on here in Whitby,, But we got a bottle of wine and this was priced really well. And Friday at 6 30, we walked straight in. Big advantage. Give the long queues at Magpie and Trenchers a miss and try this place, it's great.

Un nuevo hallazgo para nosotros. Volveremos. Mientras estábamos allí, fuimos testigos de algunos clientes muy groseros. El personal no merecía la actitud que obtuvieron de ellos. Por suerte, se fueron. El personal todavía se mantuvo educado y profesional. Un crédito a sus empleadores.

We visited Whitby for the day whilst staying in Scarborough and decided to call here for lunch. The cafe is nicely decorated and clean, including the toilets. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The food was very nice and well presented. Would call again and recommended!

Diabolical service. Three of us elderly gentlemen came for a reunion on a recommendation. Waited to be served and totally ignored by a girl at the counter and an older woman walking round. Very few people dining in and eventually the older woman came up to us making no eye contact and was the most surly rude individual. I asked that we be seated away from the awful noise that was being made by someone working on a gate outside and she pointed to a table we could use and some others saying you can’t sit there. The three of us were taken back by the absolute ignorance of this woman and we decided to leave and go to Trenchers, a place with friendly staff, ambience and similar prices as we found out. Needless to say, we will never be going there again and will never recommend the place except as a place to avoid. So disappointing!

I would highly recommend eating fish and chips here. We didn't need to que to be seated. The food was superb at a very reasonable price and the decor was comfortable. Disabled access was good if needed with access to a disabled toilet too. Staff were friendly and helpful.

I was really disappointed with fish and chips after being recommended by most locals. It was so oily, and soggy. I ate mostly a batter without fish. There wasn’t much fish although I ordered the big portion. The chips were oily too. Sorry but it wasn’t up to expectations.

Amazing food, the chips were amazing! Had a child sausage and chips and was plenty big enough.

Randomly chose this place… When I saw “crinkle cut” chips I was initially disappointed, but I have to say they were the best chips I’ve had in a long while! Best for fish and chips in Whitby I use to come here when I lived in Whitby and it was called fuscos I think most locals tend to use here.

Best Scampi I've ever eaten, and their gravy was really meaty which was fantastic. Definitely worth a visit.

I'd been guided to this very well present takeaway. Good reveiws all around. What can I say 🤦‍♂️ Guys if you dont enjoy your job or the atmosphere is stressful STOP DOING IT!!! We asked the counter staff if they could rap the food in paper because we had quite a walk b4 getting home, where we planned on eating our dinner. The plastic boxes ( which the food was thrown 😱 in ) are a waste OF MONEY LESS ECO FRIENDLY AND A LITTER ISSUES. The food goes cold and stodgy come on its not a lot to ask for. Real quality. I've been to whitby for many years and I really think they offer best fish & chips. Always freshly cooked really tasty & staff are very good.

Forget all the "famous" fish and chip restaurants in Whitty as this one is definitely the best. It's only a small restaurant but the quality is super and the Scampi was real and not extruded as in other restaurants and even lists the boat that the catch comes from. Portions are generous and the sparkling wine was at a good price compared to other restaurants, cheaper by as much as £8 per bottle. The fish was equally excellent. Best to book in advance. We had to go back for a second time before I left.

Had small cod x chips fish was white and chunky batter was nice and light crinkle cut chips were not what i expect from a fish shop in saying that they were not to bad also enjoyed a pinapple ring with sweet chillie sauce only negitive for me was price thought it was on the expensive side for portion size at £13.45

We have tried many of the different Fish and Chip options in Whitby and having had lunch here today we think this is definitely one of the best in town. The fish was beautifully cooked in a light batter with tasty peas and delicious chips. Service was great .... well done Royal Fisheries !

Went on a day trip to Whitby decided to try Royal fisheries glad we did food, service, presentation 110% definitely would recommend 🍽
