Saltwater Fish Restaurant & Takeaway in Torbay

I asked for my fish to be cooked in rice flour only as I don’t like batter and was told that’s not an option (I told the waiter I would take the risk as batter doesn’t suit me but was still told no) service wasn’t great, fish breaded coating was over cooked and the chips were greasy and not a great dinner for +£20, curry sauce was tasty and the actual fish was nice and fresh! Can back to hotel sticking of grease as kitchen is open. Shame as could be really nice but didn’t have a good experience and was very expensive for what I got.

What a fantastic fish restaurant! The fish goujons to start were as light as a feather and so tasty. The monkfish for mains was fabulous. And great service. Also welcoming of us bringing our dog with us.

The chips weren’t fresh or hot ,and hardly any fish in the batter,for £58 I’m very disappointed and won’t be ordering again

Some of the best haddock and chips we've ever had. Cooked to perfection with a really good taste and texture. Staff attentive, informative and nice to talk to.

I've eaten in many Fish & Chip shops through the UK and around the world. I can say with hand on heart that the Cod & Chip dinner I've recently had was possibly the best. The Batter was crisp, the cod moist and steaming when cut open, the flavours were fresh and clean, the cod firm to the bite. Just perfect. Chips were real and cooked in good fresh oil, the result being crispy chips on the outside and moist inside. Seriously, do check out this establishment - you won't be disappointed.

when called the shop over an hour after ordering they said it had left over half hour before hand. it turned up freezing cold and was a complete waste of money. would never order from them again.

Beautiful food, amazing fish and chips, first time on the south coast. My pal had a burger he said was spot on. My only issue was the price regular take away was £10.?? But large to sit in was £20.??. I felt guilty for not being able to tip because I spent over my budget. That was my only issue.

Casual dining with very good fish and chips. Fish portion slightly smaller to what we're used to but unlimited chips available. Very busy to probably a good idea to book.

£5.95 for 6 x fish pieces smaller than nuggets is appalling. Batter stuck to box so even worse. Not impressed

The best fish & chips we’ve had in a long time. We had the scallops for starters - so fresh and juicy. Husband had a large cod with mushy peas and I had whole tail scampi with chip shop curry sauce. Both come with unlimited homemade chips. Absolutely delicious, can well recommend if you’re in Torquay (it’s right near the clock tower in the Marina)

Our family walked the Bay of Lights trail as a Christmas get together, and finished off with a visit to Saltwater Fish Restaurant. The lights were brilliant, and so was the meal! Staff were lovely; the atmosphere was relaxing, and the food was just outstanding. There is such a choice of ways you can have your fish choice cooked, be it batter, breadcrumbs, grilled etc, and portions were excellent, with unlimited chips too! Very impressed with our first visit, and we will certainly be back. Thank you from the Lewis family, the Millers, and the Saunders'.

The cooking was faultless, but the quality of the fishcake was not good. Should have been called a potato cake.

Sorry Saltwater team, did not enjoy my dinner. It was not your usual standard at all. Overcooked and dry. Fish stuck to box under the chips. Delivery lad was quick, got a bit lost but luckily I found him in the road.

The restaurant had our order ready but it took 2 hours from placing the order to delivery. Very happy with the food, very unhappy with the delivery time.

Having heard that this restaurant is one of the best fish and chip restaurants in the U.K., we just had to try it. Centrally located across the road from the marina, we were not disappointed. Definite must to experience.

10/10 excellent Delivery had problems (unable to follow directions) but restaurants should not be penalised by combined average ratings for something outside their control

Good portions, me and my partner shared a large cod and chips which was plenty considering you get unlimited chips. The mushy peas were 10/10, proper chip shop mushy peas. The chips were very tasty, shame I was too full for extra. The fish quality was good but the batter was a bit too thick and greasy. Service was good.

Went in for lunch with my wife. We both had the sea dog lunch. ( I may have got the name wrong) but it was fish and chips with mushy peas and a drink. We couldn't fault it. The chips were lovely and the fish was probably the nicest we've had. Lovely white fish and light crispy batter. If you eat in you can have unlimited chips but to be honest we were quite full with what we had. Lovely meal.

Great food. Great service. We had the veggie sausages and unlimited chips. It is a little pricey, but cheaper than other restaurants. Would definitely go again.

Amazing gluten free fish and chips, highly recommend!

Excellent delivery, but unfortunately the food itself was underwhelming - not hot, chips seemed to be dregs that had been hanging around for some time and similarly, the fish felt like it had been sat for quite a while rather than cooked to order. A shame, as my previous experience of Saltwater was excellent.

The chips were okay, but the fish was a burnt orange batter in colour and was that cooked the actual fish was crispy and chewy. Not to mention the food was pretty much cold when it arrived.

Best fish and chips I’ve had for a while. Don’t normally eat the batter, but it was so light and crispy. Lovely music playing too!

Ordered the meal just after 6pm - it did not arrive until 8.30 pm ! The tartare sauce was warm and ruined. It was my birthday! When it became clear it would arrive so late, we should have been given the chance to complain/cancel as Domino's do.

waited over 2 hours and 30 mins for my order to then get attitude off the delivery driver and then for the food to be cold not happy at all

First time using this place, food was good but barely luke warm, if hot it would have been a great instead of good

Perfect fish, Perfect chips 10/10 All cooked with care and attention. (Assume a shortage of drivers as delivery took 1.5hrs but was worth the wait, and did not get lost !)

Fish was greasy and really disappointed considering it was ranked an award in 2022 it was terrible won’t be going back the again. It was a shame because the review looked good but it was tasteless and the chips tasted like they been sat there a while and not freshly cooked.

5/10/24 at 8pm, One member of staff was very rude, asked to put salt and vinegar on my chips only to be told to do it myself and then proceeded to throw a bag at me and told to pack it myself, it’s not my fault your serving fish N chips on a Saturday night but the food was excellent

Great food- not your usual stodgy fish and chips- freshly cooked and other tasty, locally caught options instead of just battered fish. Also great chips and great service. Loved it.

It was a good place to go in Torquay to get something to eat and right on the sea front to which was great.

Horrible experience I would not advise any woman or vulnerable people to go here on their own !

One of the best we had on our trip to Torquay during the last week of August , had multiple takeaways every other day and it was always top quality .Fish and chips ,salt and pepper squid ,prawns and sausages all extremely fresh , crisp and delicious each time .Would definitely recommend .

Lovely friendly but professional staff my husband and I had prime cod and chips with a lemon wedge bread and butter I had tartare sauce hubby had mushy peas the meal was cooked to perfection the fish was moist in a light crispy batter with piping hot chips all freshly cooked to order we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will return when in the area highly recommend you will not be disappointed

The fish was very tough and the batter dry, it tasted like it had been refried. I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Called in after a day trip to Dartmouth on the Dart Explorer and it was the wonderful smell of fish and chips that drew me in. Was welcomed by a young man who let me choose a table and brought me the menus. So much variety of freshly caught fish and I ordered a small battered Cod and Chips with Mushy Peas. A double gin of Salcombe Dry Gin was also needed. My drink arrived promptly and not long after my food arrived. It looked very appetising and I tucked in straight away. The batter on the fish was light and crispy, and the Cod was flakey and beautiful. I really enjoyed the food, it’s a lovely restaurant with good staff. Highly recommend.

Best fish and chips I've had to date, super flaky fish, crispy buttery batter and perfectly crispy chips. Staff here are so welcoming and friendly, service was top notch. Atmosphere is perfect, very calm, classic music playing that puts you in a great mood. 5 stars since that's the most I could give. If I could give more I would!

Quite honestly the best fish and chips I've had in my life. Crispy batter, none of that mushy stuff. Light but filling fish, not greasy, and absolutely delicious. Unlimited chips with everything is certainly a bonus I cashed in on. If you're about, do yourself a favour and come here.

Quality, cooking, packaging 10/10. Delivery efficient, straight to my door .. such a relief when they are able to understand simple directions, means no running up/down the road.

Excellent fish and chips - chose the traditional cod fish option although they had haddock and other catch of the day options. Fish was very fresh, batter excellent and fries tasty - enjoyed every last bite.

Despite the place being very busy! The staff were very helpful. The food ordered was grilled cod & chips, and battered cod and chips both were divine. UNLIMITED chips = YES PLEASE! The chips were fresh, yummy, and not oily at all.

Can't speak too highly of this place. Food and service so good! Grilled cod and grilled sea bass cooked perfectly and served hot. Freshly cooked chips too. Worth the price though as not cheap as chips.

Friendly service. The price came to £40 for one large fish and chips, small fish and chips,and a large piece of fish with two pots of curry sauce. It was one of the best fish and chips we have ever eaten. Fresh and tasty. Really enjoyed the food and well worth the visit.

Visited today and we ordered cod and chips with unlimited chips deal. Food was extremely good as was the service. Asked for extra chips and although they took a while they were worth the wait as freshly cooked. All in all 3 meals with additional curry sauce and 3 drinks good value at £43.90

This was easily the best fish and chips I’ve had in a very very long time, if not ever. Absolutely stunning light batter on the cod, it flaked perfectly. Seasoned perfectly. The chips were crispy and tasty! We will be back as this was a special meal. It was great value for money too!

Simply the best fish and chips I've ever had. Can accommodate gluten free with certain items, although not able to guarantee that cross contamination won't occur. Clean establishment with helpful staff. Slightly long wait times but I can't rate the flavour and service high enough.

Lovely fish and chip shop that serves usual fayre. I regret not sticking to traditional fish and chips and went for a platter of various fish choices. A bit disappointing although chips are tasty and batter is well seasoned. So would recommend the traditional food to eat or takeaway.

Well, I've been to a hell of a lot of fish and chips shops and restaurants in my 58 years. Not many better than this one. The food was perfect. Starters of Squid and King Prawns were absolutely fantastic. The Fish and Chips, stunningly good. Hot, beautifully cooked, the fish batter was so good, and the chips lovely and fluffy and crisp. Even the bread and butter was excellent! Service was fantastic, such a lovely, engaging and friendly lady. Thank you Saltwater. Keep doing what you do. A bonus 6th star from me! 🌟

Lovely friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Very disappointed by the food. The char grilled monkfish consisted of the smallest tails I had ever seen, they were like miniature fish fingers, the size of your middle finger and being so small were dried and rubbery. The salt and pepper squid consisted of coated rings, that tasted like they had been bought in as frozen rings, virtually no taste and quite rubbery. The goujons of fish were very good and 10 times bigger than the monkfish! The mushy peas were weirdly grey. What can I say - lovely staff but poor. A lovely touch was the refill chips that were offered, which were very tasty.

Was waiting all night for my delivery from just eat. Ordered a burger and chips that was it, and staying locally. When the food eventually turned up it was warm.

The food in here was unreal, had the battered cod and chips (which are unlimited!) and the fish was so nice, cooked fresh to order. One of the best fish lunches I have ever had. Customer service was also really on point!

Absolutely delicious - we stayed in Torquay for a week and visited here twice, it was so good. Crisp, light batter, beautifully fresh fish, nice atmosphere and good service.
