This coffee bar in a busy commuter train station just outside Oxford does not accept Scottish banknotes. This is company policy that was quoted to me. Beware!

Hotel very tired and dated. Need’s refurbishment. Beds comfy and everything you needed for an overnight stay. However would be very reluctant to stay here again or any other Days Inn.

Evitar.

Having already tried breakfast at the neighbouring Willowbrook garden centre, we thought we would give the Blackdown breakfast a try. When we found the entrance we had to walk through all the departments till we finally arrived at the restaurant section. Despite the centre having several in-store clothing shops, the restaurant was definitely not on a par with other ‘destination’ centres. The breakfast itself was quite good, though toast was not offered as an option to fried bread, neither was there a choice as to how the eggs were cooked. The thing that struck me was that the restaurant was tired looking and not as clean as it could have been. Despite it being fairly early in the day, several tables had crumbs on them. The chrome frames of the tables were covered in smears and the backs of the leatherette chairs had marks on them. The overall effect was of ‘transport cafe’ rather than somewhere to ‘go for coffee/lunch’. A little bit of effort however could make this a nice place.

After a lengthy journey from Glasgow to Manchester, I found myself having a late-night meal at the Crowne Plaza Manchester Airport’s “The Grill” restaurant. I decided to enjoy a repast here following the front desk’s statement that the restaurant served up “classic English dishes;” thus, I figured this would be a grand opportunity to partake in some English fish & chips, which is exactly what I ordered. But more on that in a moment. The Crowne Plaza (Manchester Airport) describes The Grill thusly: “Stylish contemporary restaurant offering a wide choice of modern cuisine in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.” I’m not exactly sure what makes this establishment “stylish” or “contemporary.” To my mind it was quite generic, even for a hotel restaurant. It’s basically a large open space adjacent to the lobby. The main restaurant area is lined with small white-topped tables with black chairs. There’s sparse artwork on the walls, but it adds little to the overall atmosphere and environment. Indeed, even the hotel’s propaganda photos on their official website cannot properly hide the lifeless physical space. To The Grill’s credit, their dinner menu actually sounded attractive on paper. As noted above, I settled on their classic English fish & chips. The food came in good time and looked decent enough; however, appearances can be deceiving – as I quickly found out. My piece of fish was impressive in its size, BUT when I bit into said fish, not only did I almost break my teeth, but all I ended up getting was a mouthful of crunchy batter. It turns out that literally HALF the “piece of fish” was nothing more than batter . . . and the fish that was there was paper thin and dry (see photo). To add insult to injury, my steak fries were barely warm. I’d be doing readers a disservice if I failed to mention the service received during dinner. In short, it was ho-hum. I’d first intended to eat a meal at the Hotel Bar (located in the same space as The Grill, but separated by a brown railing enclosure); however, after sitting for about 10-minutes without any form of acknowledgement, I moved down in to the restaurant section. Here, service was rather cold. The server showed up to take my order and then disappeared until I flagged him down to satisfy my bill. For a 4-star hotel, their restaurant staff is pretty mediocre. What saves The Grill from the dreaded 1-star rating is the breakfast buffet I enjoyed the following morning. It was well laid out and easily beats any sort of breakfast buffet you might get in North America. It featured a nice assortment of pastries, jellies, eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, fruit juices, beans, tomatoes, sausages, breakfast spuds, ham and cold cuts. In short, I was left satisfied just before embarking upon my trans-Atlantic journey. FOOD: 2/5 SERVICE: 1/5 VALUE: 2.5/5 RECOMMENDATION: I’m not sure if I just chose the wrong item, but the fish & chips that were had here was nothing short of abysmal. I can honestly say I’ve had better fish out of the grocer’s freezer. Breakfast, though, was decent. In the unlikely event I attend the Crowne Plaza (Manchester Airport) again, I would likely patronize Sampans Oriental Restaurant because at least their propaganda photos look appealing. Disappointed! Phoned and booked in advance, giving dietary requirements as we had one in party allergic to cheese and one who did not like ham or pickle. We were told this would not be a problem. We arrived to soggy mozzarella sandwiches and brioche bun and ham and pickle sandwiches and brioche bun. We advised that we had said no cheese or ham upon booking and were offered fish finger sandwiches! We have been to many afternoon tea and usually you get a lovely selection of sandwiches and cakes, this was disappointing. Cakes were a fruit scone, we asked if we could swap one for a plain scone to be told no they did not have them, then you get one cup cake each, that's it, not much of a selection. One cup of coffee, we were not offered a refill. £19.95 per couple Food was nicely presented but no atmosphere whatsoever in restaurant. All in all 4 of us were disappointed and will not return All in all

5 item breakfast. If you are going to compete with the other cafes in Chester-le-Street you have to been good. There are a number to chose from and ones that have been established for decades. Cafe 91 has been going for a few years and I have visited about 2-3 times. I ordered a 5 item breakfast for £4.75 (which includes tea or coffee) When they say 5 item breakfast they literally mean that. One rasher of bacon and one small chipolata sausage. One slice of toast. There is an option for a bigger breakfast I would have chosen had I known. The coffee was a filter coffee although it wasn't made via a filter machine. So overall the food wasn't good and service decidedly average.

What a lovely idea to have a cafe in one of the e used transepts. Nice menu. Interesting surroundings, thoughtful provision of a play space for small children. But a problem with the till meant we waited over twenty minutes for tea for four which came as tea for two and even longer for lunchtime snacks, which included a cold sausage roll which should've been hot and only one portion of soup instead of two. It's probably much better normally but we almost had to go and re park the car!

Ole debe hacerlo mejor si van a sobrevivir.

Less than after a year of opening this place is in need of a refurbishment, the toilets have been stinky and out of date since day one, I don’t know if their kitchen or bar staff have their own toilet but if they’re using these toilets then don’t ever eat here. The Garden is a mess, weeds everywhere, a wasps nest that has been reported several times but is still there, stink coming from the toilets, old splintered furniture. It’s such a shame as it’s in a prime spot overlooking the water gardens and could be so much better and at £3:80 a pint cheapest then I expect better. They do have free WiFi, free jukebox and show sports on small televisions, also pool and darts but if people are playing pool and darts then you can’t watch TV. Sadly I believe this pub won’t be around much longer and is a great opportunity missed once again.

This a 'take away' service next to the bigger Brew House Cafe at Kenwood , which is a wonderful setting. There is little choice but that is fine as it's a very small place. Today we chose the cream tea - a scone with clotted cream and jam . This was stale . The coffee had no taste . So very disappointing. I'd advise asking if the scones are freshly made before buying.

Didn't taste nice, chips seemed like they had been on the side and just warmed up, didn't taste fresh, fish was bland. part of my order was missed off and although they delivered it to me it didn't make it up for the food quality and it was too expensive for what I ordered.
