Firstly, the security outside of the pub told my friend she wouldn’t need ID to enter, after asking the rest of our group for ID, and then proceeded to touch her around the waist inappropriately.
Secondly, we noticed a racist sign on the wall, my friend alerted the bartender who was extremely rude and gaslit us saying it’s been there ages so it’s not racist, attached is the photo.
The location of this hotel is excellent - very central in Canterbury. There is parking at £15 a day at nearby multi storey. The rooms are large and bathrooms are good. The bed was a bit hard and if you felt the cold, there were no extra blankets or duvets. Rooms had large tv,ironing board and hair dryer and he hotel porvides plenty of towels and toiletries. There is a 24 hour bar with basic meals available.
Good range of food at breakfast but the fruit juice is watered down- tastes more like squash than juice and the egg is reconstituted - very much doubt its fresh real eggs. The cooked food was lukewarm.
Absolutely appalling behaviour – RACISM and ASSAULT by a member of staff.
I had a shocking experience at The Cuban in Canterbury that I feel needs to be shared. My friend and I were standing near the windowsill inside with our handbags next to us when a tall African bouncer approached us aggressively. He began waving his finger in our faces and acted confrontational without any clear explanation—apparently just because our bags were resting on the windowsill.
What made this worse was that he targeted my friend, who is Black Caribbean, with clear and disturbing racial bias. It was painfully obvious that this man—despite being Black himself—was prejudiced and aggressive toward us, especially her.
I spoke to the head bouncer who confirmed there was no issue as long as we were standing next to our bags. We returned to where we were, but the same bouncer came back, told us to get out with no explanation, and when I asked why, he refused to answer. I began recording for my own protection, and he snatched my phone, was physically aggressive, and later threw my drink all over me and broke my phone strap.
This was a clear assault, and I have reported the incident to the police. Another bouncer just said, “we don’t need to give you a reason—he’s worked here for seven years,” which is absolutely unacceptable.
This was not just poor treatment—it was racially motivated, physically aggressive, and deeply unprofessional. The Cuban seriously needs to review who they employ and how they deal with incidents like this. I will never return and strongly advise others—especially people of colour—to be cautious before going there.
The location was perfect for the town and one of the cheaper hotels. The downside was no on-site or street parking. There is a car park behind the pub but it's expensive at £30 per day. We parked a 5 minute walk away (in Holman's Meadow) for half the price. If you're only staying the night both car parks charge £2 overnight (9pm to 7.30am). The staff were lovely, friendly, and helpful. The rooms were clean, comfortable and of a good size. The room we were in had an opening skylight as opposed to a window and although it made a humming noise when part opened, it did not stop us sleeping. The food was ok, tasty and cheap. Breakfast could have been warmer. Lunch was better, and best of all - the warm cookie dough sandwich; the only thing I remembered to take a photo of! Well, that, my sparkly shoes and the Hugo spritz cocktail ;)
Authentic taste, staff is very nice and professional, food is always fresh, and clean is spotless! They are good even on delivery, the food arrives intact and still warm. Highly recommend!
The service was very slow, 50 minutes to receive the starter and then a wait for the main. When this arrived it was cold. No one checked in with us to see if all was ok, or that of others who had the same problem. Hen I found someone she just replied, I’ll see what we can do. I ate the cold meat as I waited as it was late, the mash wasn’t appealing. Though then, whilst still eating, a waitress appeared and just handed the bill to me with a card machine in her hand. Though they had removed the coat of the main meals, there was no apology or explanation.
The food may have been ok if warm though the dishes didn’t warrant the price. The service and customer care neither.
Very tasty and reasonable priced buffet. Ended up in this place after visiting Canterbury. Enough choices of dishes. Was tasty and fresh. Nice venue and clean environment. Staffs were polite and attentive. Enjoyed our dinner.
I was my boyfriends plus one for his birthday voucher , we was looking forward to our special treat today .
As soon as we got there we noticed straight away that a lot of tables had not been cleared .we found a seat and gave our drinks order , we waited 30 mins before the waitress came back over to us to ask if we had ordered , to which we replied were waiting for our drinks still ( we would have left if it wasn’t for they had our voucher and we needed to use it )
The two girls were rude and lazy in my opinion as the coffees were just not being done at all quickly and the other girl kept disappearing out back walking past all the dirty tables without attempting to clear them. One of the girls made an announcement to the whole place saying she was doing her best but they were under staffed but as far as I could see they were not organised or trying to serve people as I felt we were interrupting their chatting, we did not have more than one drink each . I went to the toilet and I don’t know how they can sign off it was clean as there was toilet roll all over the floor and was filthy . A red haired young man came in to start work and he turned it around getting drinks out much quicker and was far more productive. The food was nice and once we received it after 45 mins it was good but will not be buying a voucher for anyone else . Shame
When I got stuck into my meal which I chose as the chorizo tempted me , I couldn’t find where the chorizo was so I called the waitress and politely said I think the chorizo has been left out. She went to the kitchen and then informed me it was in the pancake - I pulled the pancake apart with her standing there so she could clearly see there was no chorizo. She went back to the kitchen and came back with - assurance there was chorizo in there even though I just proved there wasn’t any. When asked at the end was everything ok I just said don’t describe your pancakes with chorizo as they didn’t have any - why ask a customer if everything was ok if they aren’t prepared to make it right? Surely if the waitress had come back with a small bowl of chopped chorizo I wouldn’t be writing this disappointing review
Used to be my regular I loved it until, the Only thing I ate last Tuesday was chicken balls and chow main. Had no other food. Next day I have the runs with mucus in it and blood. The Drs sent a stool sample off. It came back positive for Campylobacters ( which causes food poisoning). I still am unwell from this. DO NOT EAT FROM HERE.
