The pub was well designed and loved the Frankenstein coming down from the ceiling. The drinks were delicious but for a gothic pub we found that the music was awful. It was the type of music you'd expect to hear being played at a club for people in their late teens early twenties. Not the music you'd expect in a gothic pub

Awful treatment, the blonde woman waitress said there is a low that they don't serve you drinks if we don't order food but the table next to us they were with a dog and drinks,no food, so they treat you better if you are with animals than with kids, don't recommend this place.

Great we find after being at the rum festival in the assembly rooms in October. We had a delicious meal sharing pulled beef Nachos to start they were the best ever!! I had the garlic chicken schnitzel which was really tasty, my bro had fish n chips which looked the biz. Delicious food washed down with innes & gunn. We shall be back again thanks 😊

I hope the staff have woken from their slumber by the time tourist season hits the Royal Mile. It wasn't even that busy with customers. Maybe 5 covers. We were acknowledged quickly with menus. 👍 We pointed out to them that something had been spilt on one if the chairs at our table. Nothing was done about it or even acknowledged. 👎 Then part of our order had been forgotten about. I had to chase this up. 👎Then the table next to us sat the entire time we had eaten, and drank... and used the restrooms before leaving and they still hadn't even had a menu put in front of them. 🤦♂️They also had to chase them up. The food itself was nice.👍 (Albeit you're paying tourist royal Mile Edinburgh prices). So a bit of a shame really. Could definitely do better.

****please read if you are considering booking this hotel**** I stayed here about a week ago when visiting the absolutely beautiful city of Edinburgh. Although I was amazed at the awe of this city after visiting for the first time, it was an incredible buzzkill staying at this hotel. I am typically a person who goes out of my way to give only positive feedback and give people a lot of grace (especially these days), the lack of professionalism and straight up anger I received from Jack was easily one of the most confrontational and to simply put it, mean individuals I have ever spoken with. My cousin needed shampoo to which he said he didn’t have any and proceeded to type on the computer screen, completely dismissing such a basic request. We are incredibly kind human beings and were completely confused as to why he was so rude off the bat, even using rude to explain his disposition is an understatement. He proceeded to be extremely aggressive and refused to give me a managers contact information and I am actually even questioning if Jack is his real name. In a world where everyone is recorded, I really wish I had recorded this interaction for it was so terrible and unnecessary that I have to speak up for I hope no one gets treated the way we did, in or even outside the hotel. I will say however that Adam was absolutely kind and was the complete opposite energy we received from Jack. The hotel itself wasn’t managed the best, was a bit tired, but was sufficient enough for our stay for a couple of nights and wasn’t worth complaining over. However, Jack should never be working in a service industry let alone speaking to people the way he did to us even outside of the hotel doors. His aggressiveness was beyond mean, exceeded rude, but made both my cousin and myself extremely uncomfortable speaking to us in almost a threatening manner.

The Malt Shovel is located on one of the nicest streets in the city. It's been 21 years since we were here. It was nice then and now it was great again. Very pleasant reunion with this pub. A lot of tasty beers (I did not have whisky this time), good pub food (Balmoral burger with haggis was delicious) and the service was friendly and good.
