Cafe Keno in Edinburgh, City of

I hope the staff have woken from their slumber by the time tourist season hits the Royal Mile. It wasn't even that busy with customers. Maybe 5 covers. We were acknowledged quickly with menus. 👍 We pointed out to them that something had been spilt on one if the chairs at our table. Nothing was done about it or even acknowledged. 👎 Then part of our order had been forgotten about. I had to chase this up. 👎Then the table next to us sat the entire time we had eaten, and drank... and used the restrooms before leaving and they still hadn't even had a menu put in front of them. 🤦‍♂️They also had to chase them up. The food itself was nice.👍 (Albeit you're paying tourist royal Mile Edinburgh prices). So a bit of a shame really. Could definitely do better.

A pure waste of money , I would avoid at all costs if you value your stomach , the breakfast was overpriced and brutal , staff not much better

Such a nice Christmas evening au Café Keno. We were desperately looking for a restaurant to have dinner on Christmas Day and we finally found this one. Tasty vegetarian burger and delicious deserts. Highly recommend!

A 4£ EMPTY, OLD CROISSANT! AVOID!! I've asked for a flat white and a latte to take away, with an empty croisssant. He charges me 11.20£. I get confused and pay in the moment, then realize that it does not add up. When questioned about the prices, he says "a flat white is 3.60£, a latte is 3.60£ and a croissant is 4£." It made no sense to me, and he clearly looked stressed by my question as he did not expect me to question his con. Upsetting experience. I was about to be going there every morning during my stay here, now I'll never go back.

Great food friendly staff all round a great place to eat, especially breakfast, which we had on two consecutive days of being in Edinburgh I would recommend this lovely little cafe to anyone who is visiting Edinburgh.

Came here for food one Friday evening and the service for Friday evening was too class. Fast and helpful and friendly. Food was good and definitely filled hungry stomachs. Would recommend to make a stop here if I’m Edinburgh.

The breakfast here was very good and really tasty. No queue either unlike some other venues. Quick and helpful service and a good location. £13 for Scottish breakfast was a little bit on the high side, but the Cafe is on the Royal Mile so expected.

Nice place to sit and have a bite to eat, breakfasts are good as are the coffees. We particularly enjoyed the house brekky with a side of haggis

Went with my two kids for lunch, waited 30mins after ordering then got up to leave when they ran after us saying we were the next order then once inside told would be another 15mins. Went down the street and was told 6min wait, served within 10mins, much better experience in that cafe. Never again will we go to Cafe Keno

Friendly Waitresses. Acceptable Food. "All Day Breakfast" was Not available even though the large sign read so, (see photos). But the most unfortunate part 😞 was the antagonistic hostile Owner, over my admitted mistake of a beverage on my bill. This owner was insolent and disrespectful, I would Not recommend his restaurant and suggest avoiding this place.

We never had the chance to comment on the food..The service after we received the coffees was so bad we left.. Having spoken to the management before we left , we received a shrug of his shoulders.. That's class.

Having received our coffees and drinks quickly that was the best part of the visit to Cafe Keno..We ordered bacon rolls.Not exactly for alot to ask for.After thirty minutes of a wait I asked the waitress what the situation was..I was told she would find out .Just coming she told us.. Fifteen minutes later enough was enough..I went in to discuss this with the management..A shrug of the shoulders was the answer..I paid for the drinks and shall never return.

Fantastic gem! Amazing price for what you get. Had a vegetarian full breakfast and meaty full breakfast, which were super tasty! The inside of the cafe was so cute, loved the wooden features and the flowers. Very easy to spot in a good location. I will definitely return! Really recommend :)

On our last night in Edinburgh we decided to splash out and get an Angus steak which was on Cafe Keno’s menu. The “steak” was a piece of very dry wafer thin tough “meat” which was more like a piece of stale hard leather. One of our party could not even cut it with a steak knife, so it was just left on the plate as it was inedible. It was one of the most expensive items on the menu so we thought we would get something special. How wrong we were. The description on the menu was nothing like we actually got. When I complained about the inedible s steak, the worker there just shrugged his shoulders and thrust the card machine to me .. he could not have cared less, all he was interested in was getting payment. When I said to him we did not get what we were paying for, another shrug. I could not believe the attitude.. most places will apologise and give you a discount, but not here. Very arrogant. First place I have ever been to where steak was on the menu they did not even offer any sauces. If I could have given them a zero rating, I would have done so.

Amazing food, friendly staff, easy access in and out. Put it this way, I was in Edinburgh for a week planning on trying new places every day to eat. I loved cafe keno so much I went 3 times. I will be back when I'm in Edinburgh again. Favourite Cafe in my favourite city. Sending love from 🇨🇦

One of the guys was quite grumpy when we said we just wanted drinks. But the fella making and serving was nice enough. The oat milk cappuccino was lovely

We came in here asking for haggis not knowing anything about it and with curiosity and he responded right away in a very rude way, I let it go because I wanted to try the food and then I see that he speaks in a very rude way to the rest of my party because they were supposedly blocking the entrance. We were looking at the menu! The street was empty and he could have asked for anything in a polite manner. My only feel is either he has a problem with how we look or with the fact that we are tourists because we were asking things very politely. Even his colleague, (a woman, who was very friendly actually) was astonished at how he treated us. We left so I cannot comment on the food.

Stopped off for the Scottish breakfast. It was honestly amazing. Think it’s one of the best I’ve ever had. Freshly cooked. Lovely produce, very impressive

It was quite expensive for a brew, but the breakfast was lovely. It is on the golden mile, so expect to pay that little bit more.

After travelling around Asia, North Africa and Europe for the last year I can wholeheartedly say this was the worst service I have experienced. We were seated at a table that had not yet been cleared and waited for over fifteen minutes for it to be cleared. Another five to receive menus. And after another 15 minutes waiting for order we packed up and left. Waiter was rude the throughout. Can't comment on the food as it never made it that far. Didn't expect this sort of service in Edinburgh.

Visited here on New Year’s Day for brunch. Fab friendly service, order cooked fresh and reasonable price. Plenty to choose from.

Food was nice once it finally arrived, our food took so long we requested to just pay for our drinks and leave. When we were finally shown a table my husband asked my son what he would like to eat and the server got exasperated and said 'give me a minute'. The waiter said another 2 minutes, your food is in the oven, it was another 6 minutes after that as they completed a delivery order

Good food but i thought quite pricey

Snapshot: I've only gotten the filled rolls (bacon, hash brown, etc), but they are quite filling and tasty. The Larder and Scran fill up fast in the morning. Show this place some love if you're just looking for a quick bite.

Food was nice but the eggs were not cooked, quite slimy, unfortunately we didn't notice until we'd already had some this resulted in food poisoning my and my partner have had d&v since that evening, we only ate there,

...40.. pound ..for 2 kids chicken nuggets and one burger. With 4 cans of juice. My kids didn't eat the 'chicken tenders... Because that's what they were. Waited 45 minutes also. Definitely not worth the money. Will not be back

To be fair, they were slammed but the food options were limited and service was on the low end of acceptable. It's a place you can tell mostly caters to tourists with no concept of exchange rates.

Das Café Keno ist ein schöner Ort für ein 😋 leckeres Frühstück und guten Kaffee ☕. Auch die freundliche Bedienung ist angenehm. Preislich und qualitativ war von uns nichts zu beanstanden. Bei unserem nächsten Aufenthalt in Edinburgh werden wir wieder dort essen.

This is the only place we encountered below standard service compared to all the other places we visited. We came here with 3 children. On sitting down you could still see there were random hairs on the table. Our waitress was disengaged and uninterested in us, my party ordered drinks which came fairly quickly, she then took quite a while to come to take our order. (the cafe wasn't busy, 2 other tables occupied) everyone ordered and food came quickly. My order was wrong. I ordered tuna and cheese and got chicken and bacon?? However we all ate it and the food was nice. It was just the waitress who unfortunately put a dampner on our visit. We also found this place to be a bit pricey, but on the Royal mile all food is expensive. I recommend the food here. Just not the service.

Was in Edinburgh for the tattoo, had breakfast a Cafe Keno, an absolute gem of a place! Food and service excellent, lovely staff and great atmosphere 👍 would give more than 5 stars if I could!

Good place to stop and watch the tourists go by on the Royal Mile.

Not the best and pricey. Disappointed that they lacked knowledge of allergy requests and certainly don't cater for mine (Gluten Free)other than a salad and then being told this was off the menu.

The real problem here is not the price(for tourists ofc) It's the time. We wait 35min, and a women complain for 25min before me. Itwas"ok"for tourist food. Price are hight for a fast-food like.

Could not fault this cafe deca lovely food lovely and fresh we had our dinner there one night it was good ,steak pie was fine and my friends had steak and it was not dear they enjoyed it and we asked them if they had irish coffee and they made that which we had quite a few of them .Went for breakfast the next day it was great the lady assistant we got was chatty and friendly .So will go there again.

This café is situated more or less in the middle of the Royal Mile. The menu looked good, but when the food arrived (we ordered burgers), we were a little dissapointed by the quality of the food. We were looking forward to some prime highland beef, but the burgers seemed like they had been frozen and then cooked and it was certainly not premium meat. Low value for the price charged.

We hid from the rain here for coffee and cake! The chocolate cake was so so good! And the staff where wonderfully friendly. The whole atmosphere was so welcoming.

Coffee great. I ordered cheese and salad roll. Teaspoon (if that) grated cheese and a bit of lettuce only. Very disappointed.

Got the Carribean Breeze smoothie, which is Pineapple, strawberry & coconut. It was delicious! Never would've thought strawberry would go well with pineapple & coconut as those two already make a great mix. My dad enjoyed his coffee. Coming here tomorrow for breakfast & I'm excited for it.

Let me start by saying I hate leaving bad reviews and don't do it often but the steak I had today at £15 deserves criticism. What was on the plate, a 5mm thick steak, 3 mushrooms , mashed potato and a few fried onions. Let's start with the steak, I'm sure it was cooked from frozen and was still raw when served. How the hell can you undercook such a thin steak. Absolutely tasteless as were the 3 small mushroom. Mash was okish. Put lots of salt on everything to try and improve the taste but the salt was tasteless to. Left most of the meal as I didn't want to become ill. My wife had a halloumi panini with salad which consisted of chopped lettuce and nothing else. She said it was average. 2 lukewarm beers and a smoothie. Total bill £45. Total waste of time and money. Avoid.

Cute cafe with a good choice of wraps, paninis, pancakes and french toast. The lotus biscoff pancakes with mascara pone cheese was terrific

Very kind owner and workers. They cook nice breakfast and also soup as well. Nice streetview to storytelling house on the main street.

Nice little mom and pops place with good food, good coffee and friendly staff. It can get busy because of the location and staff may be overwhelmed, but they are nice and polite nonetheless.

Used to be nice place for food and table service . Now it's the worst place on royal mile to eat , don't go near steaks or any other food, chef have no clue of cooking , I felt like I went to primitive times cave restaurant providing if there was any that time but I bet they got the food idea from there. Under cooked , tasteless , and probably stored in freezer for ages . Table service is horrible , food served before culttury. It's a shame for such a nice tourist spot to serve such horrible food and service.

Ordered hot drinks as it was a bit chilly outside. Simple and good. The staff is friendly and overall help create a lovely and comfortable atmosphere which is something I value a lot.

Four of us decided to have an evening meal here. Place was empty when arrived (should have walked out then). Drinks order was incorrect and the waitress struggled to understand us when we were ordering. One of our party ordered lasagna but was told it wasn’t available, we should have been told this when seated. Egg and cheese bagel arrived with cream cheese and a fried egg, salad was brown at the edges and nacho crisps were slightly stale. The cheese burger ordered had grated Red Leicester type cheese which never melted! The fish and chips were clearly processed, the cook from frozen type, not fresh and the chicken wrap did not look appetising at all. Not one of our party finished their meal and although waitress asked us if everything was ok when we went to pay, and was told no, she still wanted to charge £47! We complained and tried to explain what was wrong and asked for managers details, she said manager away and if we did not pay then she did not get wages. Tried to explain further but got shouted at by her, told we were on CCTV and she was reluctant to accept the £25 were offered. As leaving she was shouting at us that we were crazy!!! DO NOT eat here. There are so many amazing places to try, this is not worth anyones time or money.

I was walking down the Royal Mile one evening near 7pm and I noticed this place across the street, very nice looking place,and all the tables and chairs and menus were outside.I walked across and I had a look at the menu,and I noticed a sign on the window saying "open 7am till late".I walked inside to place an order,there were two people chatting at the counter and the young man behind the counter said to me "sorry, we're closed". Again......chairs,tables and menus still outside,door wide open to walk in, lights on, nothing put away inside and still at least one person being served at the counter,and yet I'm told it's closed. I stopped by with my family to have a quick coffees today and the customer service from one member of the staff was the very worst I ever in my live had. I am pretnant and I was super tired and I needed to have a quick rest and a bit of energy. 10 minutes after we ordered the coffees we were quicked out because it was the closing time (fair enough, they closed at 7pm and it was 7.03pm) but with the worst manners ever. Apparently I was resting too confortable in the chair and that wasn't allowed ???? (I closed my eyes for 2 minutes probably) We all were shocked by this moment. Disgusting

This is a nice stop in Old Edinburg. It’s a cafe so don’t expect a big or fancy restaurant. The service was fast and the food was good cafe quality. It’s what you would expect.

We came across the place for lunch on a wander, it was about 13:30 and the place was quite quiet, it looked basic and cheap and the price was indeed very reasonable. The food was absolutely lovely, we had four meals between us, the kids portions were big and the haggis and pizza was brilliant. Would recommend

Popped in for a coffee as the Mile was a bit chilly. Glad we did, coffees were very nice and the toasted tea cake has hit the spot with the wife. She is very happy indeed. Saw a couple of people having breakfast, and all the options people were eating looked very nice. And the portions were a good size. It’s a good size for sitting in, but if you’re in a wheelchair it may be a bit tight. But they will accommodate you, so you don’t miss out. Will we come back? Yes, definitely will come back. We live across the Forth and normally have breakfast before coming over. Not anymore we won’t, breakfast for 2 please.

Good tea and delicious food! We came here really often during our stay in Edinburgh :) especially for lunch you really nice food for your money. I would always come here again.

Listen , you need to try the full Scottish breakfast here. It's litterally better than the full English breakfasts I get back home. Bacon is cut thick and is sourced well , sausages are lovely and you get a lovely latte from here. Cake selection looks amazing and it is priced very well. Staff are quick and polite! If you visit , please try a full breakfast !! They serve alcohol and provide perfect hangover cures.
