Frankenstein Pub in Edinburgh, City of

The pub was well designed and loved the Frankenstein coming down from the ceiling. The drinks were delicious but for a gothic pub we found that the music was awful. It was the type of music you'd expect to hear being played at a club for people in their late teens early twenties. Not the music you'd expect in a gothic pub

Nice atmosphere. I especially liked the monster show and the movie being screened

Absolutely adored it here! From the show of Frankenstein that comes from the roof to the incredibly decorated interior. Food was lush and cheap as well as the drinks! We enjoyed the creative cocktails and thoroughly enjoyed our time here

Very atmospheric and a great monster show.

Pretty disappointing in terms of accessibility with 3 steps at the front and no accessible toilets (door person loudly insisted they were "Men and women upstairs and downstairs" with no other options). Drinks and atmosphere okay but had to leave when a loud quiz started.

Called in during the day for a snack and a drink. Order the loaded chips, but the order was lost in the kitchen, but after reminding them, we got the order. Watched Frankenstein, making an appearance and enjoyed the time we were there and would imagine that on a night it would be great to go to.

I was looking forward to a fun karaoke night, but this bar was a huge disappointment. Instead of engaging the audience, the staff kept the microphone virtually exclusively for themselves. Here it looked more like a private performance by the staff. We tried to participate and submitted songs, but our songs were never featured. Even though we got there early and stayed until closing time. Meanwhile, the same three or four employees sang throughout the evening, with the occasional room for a song from the audience. The staff in general were not very friendly. A waste of our time and evening.

This was actually my 2y old favourite place in Edinburgh. Between all touristic places we've been. This is the one she keeps saying was the best.

Great Atmosphere and Good Prices. Great Decor, the staff were very friendly. My Dad and I will certainly go back in the future.

Worst place,worst service,worst bar ever! How come this place is recommended among the best pubs in Edinburg? They even ask for reservation,which is totally un necessary.

Nice evening in a themed pub! The place is certainly very beautiful, and the atmosphere is suggestive! It's worth spending a couple of hours there! Very good cocktails!

We visited on Tuesday night and realised we were in time for the 8pm quiz! £2 per person and played through your device. With only 2 of us playing we managed to come 10th out of 15 teams 😆🙌 They have lots going on all through the week, so definitely recommend stopping in for a drink or two 🍻

Brilliant atmosphere and a decent pint

The place itself was great, some guys were playing live and the upstairs part didn't sound good, downstairs it did… The cocktails were simple and effective.

The barman add tips without asking at the bar, which is pretty rude. No, using card as a pretext to change the bill without the customer knowing is not honest at all. The decorum is nice however.

Have visited this venue twice whilst in Edinburgh, first in 2018 and second and last in 2024, shall not be back. Notwithstanding there appears to have been zero investment in the venue during the past six years, and the animatronic monster appears to have been decommissioned [or was out of order during our latest visit] The venue is now Cashless, which in my view is unacceptable. Cashless venues encourage Data surveillance and manipulation, Exclusion of poorest in society, Economic censorship, Economic oligopolization and Political capture. No venue should be cashless and this should be outlawed by the government. And to add insult to injury the venue add a 10% charge to drinks orders, what a sham.

I spent a lot of my Scotland and London trip. Trying to find a good pizza. This was not IT. This was the worst one. It's a cool place to check out, but maybe stick to the drinks.

Called in unexpectedly for a drink. One of our hi lights from our Edinburgh trip, such a cool atmosphere and the Frankenstein animatronic was a great touch! Highly recommend !

Just brilliant The building and decor are amazing and the Frankensteins monster show is just fantastic. We ate and drank there and both were brilliant as well. Prices were brilliant and location is great as well to explore the city

Cool place with a nice atmosphere!

We absolutely loved it here. The food was great (our pizza was very fresh and delicious). The drinks tasted amazing and we were amazed by the friendly service. Highly recommend!

We come here every time we come to edinburgh, we last came around a year ago. I really like it here but this time it wasn't the same, the well known animatronic wasn't working which was a real shame. The food was just average, we knew it would be it always is here we just thought we would eat here as it's one of our favourite places to visit but it's pricey for what it is, I would say weatherspoons quality of food but at a much inflated price. Service was good again always is in here the staff were lovely. Just a couple of things this time as mentioned animatronic wasn't working and lastly, we saw a mouse probs a few inches in length run across the floor to the bar, I told staff immediately but they didn't seem bothered. Just a bit weird for a place that serves food, it didn't bother us too much but if the wrong type of person saw this they would of most likely kicked off plus it did put my partner off eating the rest of her food which I understand. Just an average visit this time which was a shame we we been here every year for like 4 years now.

Just left as I asked for the sound to be on for the Scotland v Australia game but told the manager refused. Left without having my drink. Rubbish

The treatment of foreign tourists leaves much to be desired. They took our food away without asking when we hadn't finished. They made us feel unwelcome, without making any effort to try to make communication more fluid and easier. Also, taking into account how cold it is in Edinburgh, they had the air conditioning on, which means that you are eating cold and uncomfortable at all times. Orders are placed at the bar (they don't serve tables), the food is nothing special and they don't accept cash payment, which also poses problems. Obviously we will not repeat

A great pub just off the Royal Mile. Has a good range of beers and cocktails. Staff are excellent. And then there's the Rise of Frankenstein about every hour

Very atmospheric, a little expensive. But overall a great place to spend time. The cocktails are served very nicely

Didn't try the food. Just tried it as we had heard about the bar and we weren't disappointed. Even git to see the monster.

I’m giving this a 2 star because the decor and physical location is nice. But 2 out of 4 beers were not cold. We were there 15 minutes before 5, and left 20 after 6pm, we asked three different bartenders when the Frankenstein would drop as we were really looking forward to it. The first two said every hour on the hour, and nothing, at 6:10pm we asked the third and she said he comes out when he wants. Just be straight forward. It was our only time to try and see it and were sadly disappointed and dissatisfied with the beer and the misinformation.

Worth going for the frankenstein theme. The animated Frankenstein coming alive above your head is just brilliant. Food, very basic, it's really sides and pizza. Our chicken and barbecue pizza was slabbered in what felt like just heinz barbecue sauce squirted allll over it, was not as nice. FOR SOME DAFT REASON, THEY DO NOT TAKE CASH, ITS ALL CARD, WHICH IS SHAMEFUL. they must lose business over this. They sell merchandise but could be really work on that. So much they could do, but all you see is shirts that don't come in a good range of sizes. They could do so much more to get people in. I am a huge universal monsters fan and would love merchandise. But ...mehhhhh

One of the best bars I've ever been in. I love Frankenstein and the fact they show the movie and the decor is based on this monster is fantastic. Will definitely be back.

Great drinks, even tasty mocktails. Amazing atmosphere with Frankenstein popping out once in a while. Even the food is tasty, and i highly recommend the truffle parmasan fries !

Very cool ad with a great atmosphere for Halloween! Don't hesitate to come early to be sure of having a table in the evening 😁 Despite the fact that there are a lot of people, we are served very quickly and the staff is very friendly.

Fun bar but Frankenstein’s monster took too long to appear

Very atmospheric bar with a Frankenstein theme. Heard Black Sabbath once, Rammstein once and ACDC twice. Furthermore, happy music and even Donna Summer were played on October 31! Her was a bit at odds with all the people dressed up, very strange not to play dark music on such an evening and in such a bar anyway. It looks a bit like Hard Rock Café: overpriced and overrated. You also have to place your food order at the bar, which is not very convenient and because there is hardly any staff at the tables to clear away used crockery, there are many dirty tables. Is there anything beautiful about it? Yes, a beautiful interior, especially upstairs!

The pub is nice just didn't like that you need to get your own drink downstairs and they stop serving cocktails after 7pm.

Loved the ambiance, the arrival of Frankeinstein. Food was good. Music not too loud like many other places. Will come back

Pure tourist trap, the decor is nice Food is worth 0 The service is not friendly unfortunately But a very nice surprise during a Karaoke evening, the atmosphere was great, the people sang very, very well and everyone accompanied them, that’s what saved the establishment a little.

A must stop if you are in the area.

We went for my Brother in law's birthday and was very disappointed with the lack of choice in the food menu and the drinks. We didn't stay!

We stopped off at Frankenstein’s for a couple of drinks and a bite to eat, we order a couple of cocktails and some garlic bread which we thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere was one of the best that we’ve experienced in a pub, we got to see Frankenstein drop from the ceiling which was funny we will definitely call in again

A really quirky and fun bar to visit in Edinburgh. Every now and then Frankenstein comes out for everyone to see! Awesome theme and loads of booths upstairs, so you can see in peace without constant people around you.

A place worth stopping to have a drink; the atmosphere was very well done

Not expecting Disney happiness or anything but would it hurt to be nice? You're getting paid right?! Stood at the bar for what seemed like an eternity only to be unacknowledged. To top it off the tall barmaid with blonde hair whom was pretending to be unaware of my existence started serving everyone but me. Training maybe? Just walked out.

Loved this place! Such a cool atmosphere. And they have a Frankenstein come out of hiding every hour. I think it was absolutely the coolest thing!

What an amazing place, I saw this place multiple times on tiktok, and I have to say it doesn't disappoint, the food is amazing, the atmosphere it's def great, drinks is awesome, loving the old gothic laboratory, and the star of the show Frankenstein coming out and see and hear the smoke and lightning lights and see the creature get up, and go back again to the layer, I recommend everyone to go there, it's amazing 10/10

Three-storey pub a short walk from the center of Edinburgh, lots of dishes and above all beers to choose from. Like many other places in the country, they apply a 10% "service charge" on the receipt.

Food and drinks hard to get. We also tried for karaoke but our songs never came up although we were there at 9 pm and left when it closed. The same 3 or 4 pub's people kept singing. Avoid the place unless you want to be enraged and disrespected.

Great Place, well worth a visit

A cool pub in a former church. Apparently it's been around for 50 years. It had live musicians who were quite good. If you're in the area it's worth stopping by

We enjoyed ourselves at karaoke. Everyone was nice there. We were visiting from the US, we had a great time

Very cool atmosphere and decoration, delicious food, great cocktails, fast service and a cool show where you can experience Frankenstein “live”, I won’t say anything more. The music is a little louder, but it didn't bother me at all and totally suited my taste. Due to the level of popularity, the prices are a little higher, but in my opinion they are still completely reasonable. By far the coolest bar I've been to so far.

I was traveling from the US and stopped here to eat after seeing the sights in the area. The place has a cool atmosphere and theme and the pizza was soooo good! They did accidentally forget a part of our order but quickly fixed it and were very apologetic about it. Goes a long way when they make an honest mistake and are quick to fix it!

Awesome atmosphere and Frankensteins 'monster' comes down once an hour to say hello to his fans. The styling of the bar is fantastic and we have visited a few times from Glasgow. The drink prices are very reasonable for the area and they are pretty strong!

Sooo cool of a bar. Got the “Goblet of Fire,” girlfriend got a “Corpsey Colada.” Both were AMAZING!!! Shooters were also nice. “Blood Moon” and “Spicy Bride” both terrific!

Popped in early afternoon with my 14yo to see the Monster show, having heard about it from family. Young man behind the bar was very friendly, told us the best place to sit to see the show (which is upstairs in the mezzanine level). Decor is nice, very in keeping with the theme. The show is every hour, and as we had 40 mins to wait we ordered pizza. The pizza was delicious. Service was quite quick, but the bar was quiet, and it was clearly freshly made. The monster show was only a few minutes long, but it was fun and something different.

Very good experience worth the detour. We weren't able to eat because the kitchen had just closed but the cocktails were very good. In addition, every hour (on the dot), Frankenstein will pay you a little visit.

We were so disappointed with our visit here (we just left, so we can't comment on food / drink). After seeing good reviews, we were excited to visit! Unfortunately, it was horrible. The smell, like pee and alcohol 😷 We got a photo outside and when entering the smell just hit us. My daughter needed the toilet, so we went downstairs.. that was worse! Broken/ missing toilet handles, dirty seats, the smell, and just the mess. I understand it's a bar and is full of young adults, but the condition of this place is awful. Not child friendly at all. We never went upstairs. We just left as we couldn't sit in that.

Fun decor and inside looks pretty cool but bar lines are so long and takes forever to get serviced we actually ended up leaving before being served and this was at lunchtime.

We didn’t know where we were going to be eating and drinking while in Edinburgh for the day, I’m so thrilled my hubby spotted Frankensteins, we really enjoyed it. We had pizzas and drinks and soaked up the decor and atmosphere.

I have never been similar in bar, I was surprised, Frankenstein performance was so awesome. If you wanna to travel in Edinburgh, I recommend visiting Frankenstein bar 🍸

Quirky bar in Edinburgh - great decor

I loved the bar and the drinks were really good, although the cocktails were extremely expensive (some were over a tenner for a small glass) I did enjoy them. The building is beautiful and I loved the gothic environment. My only slight criticism is if you're going for a gothic themed pub you should have a matching playlist which they did not and it ruined the ambience.

Fun experience Tasty cocktails (bit pricey, but that's what you get in Edinburgh city centre) I was sitting in the bar area where Frankenstein comes down from the ceiling every hour or so! Great fun Would like to try some food next time Management FYI - There are two overhead projectors on either side of the room displaying a slide show of advertisements from 2023. Would have been nice if they were playing the Frankenstein films or some updated ads 😂

If your visiting Edinburgh it's a must to call in for a drink or two. We visited at lunch time but still the place had a great atmosphere

Expensive cocktails, very slow service (had to wait 20 minutes for a cocktail) and they were out of almost all ciders I wanted to order. It's very beautiful though, so worth a visit for that.

We had a fantastic time at this establishment! A cool atmosphere can really elevate a dining experience. Good prices and good service are always a winning combination in my book. I'll have to add this place to my list as the coolest pub so far.

Spectacular pub, with a history and surprises that are worth watching lol for those who are afraid of Frankeinstein it is better not to go!!! A variety of delicious beers, very cozy, comfortable pub and top service! Unique experience!

My bridesmaids recently booked a couple of tables/booths downstairs as part of my hen do and it was such a fab area. We pretty much had the area to ourselves and the girls could decorate it as they like. The food was also lovely and the venue provided some complimentary prosecco - thank you! Great experience all round.

Really can't thank Frankensteins enough for giving us the space they gave us in the Bier Keller last night for my best friend's hen party. You really went above and beyond thank you for the bottles of prosecco that was lovely and so unexpected. We really appreciated it and the bride had a fabulous night.
