Very beautiful place, very good drinks

We visited Frankenstein with my partner around 3pm on a Wednesday, and the place was super quiet. Even with hardly anyone there, it still had this cool, imposing vibe thanks to all the Dr. Frankenstein-themed memorabilia and décor. The whole pub is decked out in a way that totally fits the spooky story, which gives it loads of character and atmosphere. When you walk in, the eight-foot tall Frankenstein's monster greets you and you immediately get to choose between heading up to the mezzanine or sticking to the first floor. We decided to check out the mezzanine first, just out of curiosity. It was basically empty except for a few people—probably regulars—hanging out at the front. It was nice enough but felt a bit too quiet for us what with the upstairs bar not being in use, so we headed back downstairs. We found a cozy little corner on the ground floor and grabbed a food menu. Honestly, we were surprised by how much choice there was! They’ve got a decent variety of food and a ton of drinks, which is always a bonus. I can imagine this place absolutely buzzing with uni students in the evenings—it’s got that vibe of a spot that would get really lively after dark. Overall, it’s a pretty cool pub to chill in, especially during the day if you want a quiet spot. The theming and décor are on point, the menu has plenty of options, and it’s got a nice mix of cozy and quirky. Be sure to stay a little bit longer for the revealing of the monster that occasionally happens! Definitely worth checking out, whether you’re after a laid-back afternoon or a fun night out!

Dropped in for a drink while sightseeing, brilliant bar great atmosphere and music , friendly staff, also just across the road from the Scottish museum

Been there due to a friend's recommendation (they know I love horror and creepy things), and they were right! I should say first that the staff is amazing, they're super friendly and helpful. The drinks are delicious, and so is the food. Food is simple pub food but still very good. The drinks? Delicious works of art with very entertaining names. The Ambiente is of course very Frankenstein with lots of art, figurines and lights etc. They also play good music (oftentimes Rock, Metal or Goth alligned). I had a fun time visiting when I was in Edinburgh and would absolutely go again the next time I'm nearby

We only stayed for a round... the rugby was on, and the atmosphere was buzzing, so can't give top marks but really enjoyed being there.

Instead of going there for a quick drink like I planned, I had the most amazing and fun time there! Great venue with a great selection of drinks and the vibes at the karaoke bar were fantastic! Highly recommend! You got a new fan from Germany!

These types of sites are those that I will always like!! Projects that are carried out with a lot of magic and enthusiasm!! Simply unique and 100% recommended 👌

Card only. You order at the bar and they add a service charge on!? Otherwise place is okay... Typical quirky tourist place. Marked down a bit due to lack of cash payment and making a fuss about removing service charge for pouring a pint.

Wonderful place with unique atmosphere and the best staff in the world! Thank you guys so much for all the help with my birthday celebration and especially for bringing us take away boxes fot the cake. I had such a lovely evening thanks to all your efforts 😊

Nice place to visit at nigth. Good performance when dance time arrives. Excellent ambience full of crazy people ready to party. Heard that the place has changed but when I lived in the city was the place to go with friends. Good memories and still hearing the music....

We went with a German Travel Group to pop into Frankensteins Pub and it was sooo amazing for them. We loved the Monstershow, the Atmosphere as well as the staff was just amazing and we cant wait to visit again!

Did not try food while we were here. Wanted to stop in to check out such a unique place. The theme of the bar is really cool, we were also here on Halloween so that just added to it. The drinks were very good and fit in very well with the theme of the bar as well. Definitely worth checking out!!

Larger tated like lines are not cleaned and food is terrible very thin hard pizza and little selection of pizza (lots of fruit flies)

Very interesting place! Reconverted church, with a Frankenstein theme. They have live music sometimes, and the decoration is quite cool. Prices are average for the area.

1 of the best restaurants I have ever been to, food was delicious. Staff were excellent and help with everything I needed. Great selection on the menu and drink selection also is fantastic. Wish there was more than 5 stars for this restaurant. Can’t wait to go back.

When I arrived with my wife I was greeted by the bar staff and made to feel welcome. The tables where clean and tidy and didn't wait too long for the food. The food was great. Will definitely be back

Not a horror bar literally a normal below average pub with overpriced drinks. Two normal drinks were £20 in plastic cups. Guinness in a plastic cup at 6.30pm. Don’t come here

Cool bar and the Frankenstein theme is awesome but the food was below par, ordered pizza, truffle fries ans garlic bread and it was barely warm when it arrived, we were upstairs and starving so we just soldiered through instead of complaining. The chips were decent, but the pizza must have been sittinf in the kitchen for a while before they brought it up, it was tough, not hot and just didnt taste fresh, poor quality ingredients too. I'd come back for a drink but i'd probably stay clear of the food, just very little effort went into it all

Hardly horror, and a 20 round in a plastic cup is atrocious.

We went for a drink and the place is good set. As soon as you enter, upstairs you have Frankenstein's bar and downstairs you have karaoke. Very good drinks. To put something bad, I would tell you that they have few brands of whiskey, they would lack, for example, a Macallan 12 or 18

YOU CAN'T MISS IT. It is a darkly magical place. The place is amazing in itself and knowing that it was an old chapel adds +1000 points. We were lucky enough to see Frankenstein's awakening (I recommend being on the second floor) and it was super cool. We ordered a pizza which was good, although what interests us most are the cocktails and so on, the food is not bad.

Solo trip up north and knew I had to come here! This is a very cool spot, live music, the ladies at the bar were very sweet and gave me great drink recommendations. Frankenstein himself made an appearance which was super fun, I’d definitely come back :))

We’ve visited Edinburgh a few times over the past couple of years and last year we eventually got time to pop in to Frankenstein’s. We’d no sooner sat down with our drinks when the lights dimmed, music started and Frankenstein appeared, couldn’t have timed it better. I love places like this, great atmosphere, really pleased to have visited and hopefully will again when next in Edinburgh.

The atmosphere is fun for what it is. The drinks are very pricey and the food was soooo over-cooked it was difficult to figure out what dish was what! It also took 45 minutes to get our food. I recommend to grab a quick beer, watch Frankenstein’s monster come to “life,” and then continue on your way.

I love a bar with a theme, especially an interesting one. Enjoyed it there although think they could pack more Frankenstein/spooky bits in. The Cocktail that bubbles was very cool and very nice. Watch out for when Frankenstein comes out each hour! Definitely worth a visit

Fantastic bar, set in an old church, gives it a really creepy gothic feel. Fantastic atmosphere though, staff are friendly and drinks are average price wise. Karaoke is a must though. Worth the visit. Made it into the top five for pubs we have visited in the capital.

Brilliant place, something different. Cocktails were ok, could do with a spruce up for better flavours. Staff were lovely and we stayed for a few hours. Definitely going back when I'm up in Edinburgh again 😊

This pub is within a historical building (an old 19th century church). Various levels within the building and different "themed" areas. There's a Frankenstein monster that comes alive every hour in the evening. Fair price for the area and a good selection on offer. The staff were pleasant and keen to ensure quick service. If I remember correctly, it was "card only" for payment which could deter some people.

Themed place, fun with a wide choice

We went to the New Year's party (it was very weak, there was nothing special) they have karaoke downstairs, we enjoyed it. The price of alcohol is correct, a beer is 7p, the place is different and with beautiful decoration.

Popped in by curiosity and a beer or more. Cool surroundings, fair prices, but a bit annoying to have to go downstairs for ordering (every time ;-) ). Definitely a place to drop in if you’re in the neighbourhood and your feet need a rest and the rest needs a beer.

Waited for the famous Frankenstein monster to make his appearance (which is meant to be every hour) never came out once, looked like many were waiting also. Looked like staff couldn't be bothered.

Back after a very nice first experience but it's not the same at all. A fish bowls served in a beer glass, without the decoration to go with it, straws too small to drink from, forced to ask for glasses and transfer. More entertainment. In short, a disappointing or even very bad experience. I no longer recommend.

This was our second visit to Edinburgh and second visit to Frankenstein's - we stopped by again for the novelty and it did not disappoint! They've really gone all in on the theme, which is great fun. As IPA drinkers, the selection of beer is a bit limited, however they do have a wide range of all sorts of drinks on offer. On this visit we were treated to a surprise - all of a sudden thunder started to rumble, smoke appeared and Frankenstein's monster was lowered from the ceiling! Loved the drama. We will definitely pop in again on our next trip to Edinburgh.

Sooo cool of a bar. Got the “Goblet of Fire,” friend got a “Corpsey Colada.” Both were AMAZING!!! Shooters were also nice. “Blood Moon” and “Spicy Bride” both terrific!

The pub was well designed and loved the Frankenstein coming down from the ceiling. The drinks were delicious but for a gothic pub we found that the music was awful. It was the type of music you'd expect to hear being played at a club for people in their late teens early twenties. Not the music you'd expect in a gothic pub

Absolutely adored it here! From the show of Frankenstein that comes from the roof to the incredibly decorated interior. Food was lush and cheap as well as the drinks! We enjoyed the creative cocktails and thoroughly enjoyed our time here

Very atmospheric and a great monster show.

Pretty disappointing in terms of accessibility with 3 steps at the front and no accessible toilets (door person loudly insisted they were "Men and women upstairs and downstairs" with no other options). Drinks and atmosphere okay but had to leave when a loud quiz started.

Called in during the day for a snack and a drink. Order the loaded chips, but the order was lost in the kitchen, but after reminding them, we got the order. Watched Frankenstein, making an appearance and enjoyed the time we were there and would imagine that on a night it would be great to go to.

This was actually my 2y old favourite place in Edinburgh. Between all touristic places we've been. This is the one she keeps saying was the best.

I was looking forward to a fun karaoke night, but this bar was a huge disappointment. Instead of engaging the audience, the staff kept the microphone virtually exclusively for themselves. Here it looked more like a private performance by the staff. We tried to participate and submitted songs, but our songs were never featured. Even though we got there early and stayed until closing time. Meanwhile, the same three or four employees sang throughout the evening, with the occasional opportunity for a song from the audience. The staff in general were not very friendly. A waste of our time and evening.

Great, lively place but cocktails were pricey and not particularly good.

We visited on Tuesday night and realised we were in time for the 8pm quiz! £2 per person and played through your device. With only 2 of us playing we managed to come 10th out of 15 teams 😆🙌 They have lots going on all through the week, so definitely recommend stopping in for a drink or two 🍻

Brilliant atmosphere and a decent pint

The place itself was great, some guys were playing live and the upstairs part didn't sound good, downstairs it did… The cocktails were simple and effective.

The barman add tips without asking at the bar, which is pretty rude. No, using card as a pretext to change the bill without the customer knowing is not honest at all. The decorum is nice however.

Have visited this venue twice whilst in Edinburgh, first in 2018 and second and last in 2024, shall not be back. Notwithstanding there appears to have been zero investment in the venue during the past six years, and the animatronic monster appears to have been decommissioned [or was out of order during our latest visit] The venue is now Cashless, which in my view is unacceptable. Cashless venues encourage Data surveillance and manipulation, Exclusion of poorest in society, Economic censorship, Economic oligopolization and Political capture. No venue should be cashless and this should be outlawed by the government. And to add insult to injury the venue add a 10% charge to drinks orders, what a sham.

I spent a lot of my Scotland and London trip. Trying to find a good pizza. This was not IT. This was the worst one. It's a cool place to check out, but maybe stick to the drinks.

Just brilliant The building and decor are amazing and the Frankensteins monster show is just fantastic. We ate and drank there and both were brilliant as well. Prices were brilliant and location is great as well to explore the city
