Fantastic food, Haggis almost singlehandedly convinced my husband to stay in Edinburgh forever, though it was only his first one! The Chicken Schnitzel is the best I have ever had so far. The only issue we had was our waiter I guess ended his shift and went home without letting anyone else know we were his table. The other staff were lovely when we finally realized the issue and were very accommodating and sweet.

We got here at 1130 and were able to snag a table without a reservation! The bangers and mash were perfect and super tasty. My wife had the halloumi fries and they were banging. She had the spinach and mushrooms on sour dough bread and was very happy with the dish overall. When we left at 1230 both floors were packed and there was a line, so get in by 1130 and you'll be good!

It is necessary to wait to be served, in our case about 40 minutes, but you can do it in the bar below having a beer. The food was very delicious and the staff is very attentive. I would have appreciated more toffee sauce on the dessert, but that doesn't spoil the experience! I think it is essential in the city.

Excellent restaurant!! We had to wait 30 minutes at the bar to get a table in the restaurant which suited us perfectly to take the time to have a drink. We tried some specialties and everything was very good. Being able to have the haggis as a starter was very good because it made a smaller portion, which 2 of us shared. Unfortunately there was no longer the typical dessert :(

Tourist trap! The food is not worth the 4 star as rated. The broccoli was served raw, the Cullen skink was watery, the fish from fish and chips was hard as a rock. The stovies was pretty bland. The British steak & Nicholson’s pale ale pie is pretty average. The haggis neeps & tatties and scotch broth were average as well, and the sausages in the sausage and mash were a tad bit too salty. Came here to try the food seeing as the ratings were pretty high, was extremely disappointed. Tourist trap, I repeat, tourist trap!

We were very lucky to get one of the three tables out the front, which are great for people watching, although I wouldn’t say it was a relaxing spot for a drink! I read the reviews prior to going to this restaurant, so I went prepared for a slow service. It was a busy evening and we waited about 45 minutes to be seated. It didn't take long to order our drinks and food, which was good. However, after that no more service: it took more than 30 minutes to get tap water served. 15 minutes later, the waiter came and apologized: she had just realized she didn't put our order in. After 1 hour seated, we got our drinks. The food came shortly after, which was very good. The nice thing is that the waiter/hostess offered a fair discount in the end, recognizing the mess. I liked her attitude. I liked the food and the vibe of the place. In the end, I thought it was fair deal.

There is nothing personal about the review but only serious concerns are voiced to a reputable establishment. Pros: Gluten free (gf), vegan Pale Ale. Kind enough to take a dish off from the bill because I would not touch it. The dish was drizzled with balsamic vinegar and was therefore not certain to be gf and dairy free (df). Haggis was reportedly good to taste (tasted and ordered by someone who did not have diet restrictions) but looked different the way it was served. Cons: The staff is not aware of what dishes are gf and df and it has to be stressed that you will be in serious trouble unless the server finds out for sure abt the dish and its dietary components. The staff (not just the server but also the cooks/chefs/ people who work there) were NOT aware of common foods that are labeled as gf but are aged in grain-barrels that cause gluten contamination to a harmless product. Balsamic vinegar has to be used from companies that certify their product as gf and df or else do not use it for troubled folks. Offer olive oil drizzle and lemon instead. The reviewer went hungry for dinner except chips and beer as a result. Dietary restrictions need to be taken seriously and simply posting info online in a app to patrons who might visit casually is NOT enough. Hopefully the chips were safe and really had a dedicated fryer. But the entire episode makes me mistrustful of what was reported or in posted earlier reviews.

The Deacon Brodies Tavern was my canteen during my 8 days in Edinburgh. The staff is very friendly (especially the girls!) and I enjoyed all the dishes that were served to me. Special mention for the Ocean Fish & Chips which is quite simply the best I have eaten in my life!! I chose this establishment because it offers many Scottish dishes, both for main course and dessert. Very hearty dishes; I, who always have dessert, have sometimes given up! Fair price. The only downside: a lot of people!! You have to arrive very early to get a table without too much waiting (around 5:30 p.m., or even before!). My tip: arrive early... with a book or photos to sort on the phone! They will give you a pager to call you once a table is ready. In the meantime, it is possible to wait at the bar. Thank you to the team for your service! =)

Great food friendly staff all round a great place to eat, especially breakfast, which we had on two consecutive days of being in Edinburgh I would recommend this lovely little cafe to anyone who is visiting Edinburgh.
