Very disappointed by the food in this pub. This was our second visit to the Guildford. Our first visit was very positive and the food was excellent, delivered in a timely fashion and piping hot in the bar area. On our latest visit the wait for food was excessive people who ordered after us were served before us. When our food arrived the fish was excellent but the chips were quite cool but left under the fish. They were also not as fresh as they should have been. We spoke to the waiter about the delay in the food delivery and were told that it was a new chef. Any trained chef can walk into any kitchen and cope with service demands. The bar area in the restaurant could also do with a good tidy up. I don't think we will return.

Always a 5- star experience in busy Edinburgh New Town. One of the most iconic and beautiful pubs in the city. Don't forget to look up; the ceiling is magnificent. Service was top notch. We had made lunch reservations for 1:30, but arrived around 12. No problem at all being early. Handled with grace and efficiency. All 3 of us had the haggis, tatties, and keeps ( small ) with whisky sauce. One order was vegetarian. All were delicious! Best haggis in town. Quite spicy. My niece had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert; raved about it. I highly recommend this pub for downtown dining.

Excellent pub. Great range of cask ales.

We found the pub somewhat by accident, staying nearby and wandering in for a drink. The bar area is very impressive and obviously well maintained with panelling and ceiling mouldings. The staff were very friendly. I was able to try a real ale before ordering a pint and all ale's and lagers wee obviously very well kept. We came back the following day and sat upstairs for dinner. The fish chowder starter was superb and is a "must" to try. My wife had the haggis, neeps and tatties served with a whiskey sauce and I had the steak pie which had plenty of very tender steak in a rich sauce. Very good value.

It is a very traditional-style restaurant with a very atmospheric interior. We did not make a reservation, but the service was very kind and helped us arrange seats. We came here for lunch. The duck legs and beef pie are both delicious, and the British beef ale pie is more traditional. , is a meal you can try. The side dishes come with fries. If you have a chance next time, you can come here to have a beer and enjoy the wonderful time in Edinburgh.

Excellent stop over for a drink after shopping. Amazing interior and stepped in history. Well worth a visit.

Entered at 12 noon and the first floor was full of drinking customers I ordered the duck legs, which melted in your mouth. With the sauce, they were tender and delicious. It is recommended to make an appointment in advance, business is very good! The restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere and the waiters warmly entertained them. You might as well visit here in the UK and enjoy the British atmosphere!

We came here Monday evening after a long drive from Sussex and were greeted and served by Paul , a very friendly and knowledgeable chap. We started with the fish chowder which is to die for with generous chunks of fish and a gorgeous creamy stock…followed by haggis for hubby and crombies sausage and mash for me, also delicious. We will be back on our next trip.

Staff at bar very rude. We asked if they had any non alcoholic drinks (my sister is allergic to alcohol). They where not very helpful in fact it seemed like it was a bother to answer. Most decent pubs now have NA lager or cider. She had a fresh orange and lemonade but even that seemed a bother. Not impressed.

A beautiful pub.....and an awful service. The pub is really nice with a great choice of beers. But they didn't wanted us to eat at 7:55 pm, with so called "reserved tables" kept empty until the kitchen closes. If you don't want to work, just say it. A pity, because the place is beautiful.

Typical decor, nice atmosphere but to eat there... the first time we were told that all the tables were reserved, then as another table became available, that the kitchens were closing. It was 8 p.m. Go your way if you want to have dinner at that time.

Dropped in for a quick pint on route to hotel. Wee break to see Hamilton at Festival theatre.

Great Scottish pub with a lovely interior and atmosphere! We had soup of the day as starters and then burgers, haggis, and steak and ale pie - the food was so delicious! Whenever visiting Edinburgh again we will be back for sure!

Beautiful setting. Always busy. Tried to book a table for food and was told they didn’t take bookings and it was pot-luck so we visited hoping to get a table for four. When we arrived we were told there were no tables available because they were fully booked. Waiters explanation was they don’t take bookings on the day. I asked if that meant even if they have no bookings on a particular day they wont take bookings on that day so have an empty restaurant. He had no answer for me. Disappointing.

Stopped into this pub spontaneously. Nice service, great beers. Pleasant atmosphere at the bar! Can definitely be recommended! 👍

The food was delicious, the staff is nice!

The decor in here is fantastic! The staff are great and there's a fine selection of beers and single malt whiskies, along with a decent menu in the upstairs restaurant. Yum!

Came to meet up with family and had a great time here. Food was tasty recommended the sausage and mash. Ben was very accommodating. Will be back when I am next in town.

I have visited The Guilford Arms many times now . I always go in when I am on a visit to Edinburgh. It is a very popular. I was there over a lunchtime I had tomato soup it was delicious served with bread . I could see other customers having other foods from the menu & they all looked like they were enjoying their food . Great atmosphere efficient & friendly staff

Prettiest pub I've ever been to in recent memory, I highly recommend that you visit them if you're in Edinburgh.

Used to visit this pub admittedly a long time ago. I don’t think it’s been cleaned since then. Had 2 drinks. The beer was good. Service was not great. The staff were pretty uninterested. Couldn’t help noticing that they were more engaged with friends at the bar than other customers. The place is really manky. Regretfully I will not be visiting again.

Fabian the Manager was so rude, we have been here before and enjoyed it. Such a shame

I love this pub. The styling of the pub is excellent and they have a good drinks selection. It's always the first pub I head to if going for a drink in Edinburgh. A very short walk from the train station. I haven't eaten here so can't comment on the food. Staff always have a smile on them. It's a warm and welcoming place.

Superb location just off Princes street. Always buzzing with locsls, visitors, Rugby fans etc. Been many many times. Good range of Scottish draught Beers and regular additions. Always recommended as a 'Go to ...'. Old Traditional watering hole.

So the atmosphere is cozy but half the downstairs smells of the toilets. Sit near the front door. The bar service and restaurant service is great! 10/10. The wine I had was okay, better than average for a beer pub I'd say. The rioja I'd go as far as to say was impressive for the price. The food however, was one of the worst pub meals I ever had and I was devastated. It looked really promising (steak and ale pie) chips were cooked alright I suppose but the veg was underdone and the pie literally didn't taste of anything except maybe slightly vinegary? I have never had such bland food, like I I actually don't understand how steak and ale pie could be so bad?! I decided to see if a pudding could claw back the situation but that was also disappointing, STP, not sure if underdone or overdone as I never cooked a pudding like this but it's texture was almost chewy and dry at the same time? Luckily ice cream and sauce was nice enough that I ate about half.

A fabulous place but a victim of its own success and location. Insanely busy on Saturday nights.

I really find it difficult to recognise the previous bad reviews. I've never had a bad experience in the Guilford after migrating there from the next door Cafe Royal a year ago. Almost always get served promptly and almost always get a seat! Under a fiver for my pint and the other punters are friendly. Plus the decor is magnificent.

Manager has a very poor attitude to his customers . A great day out with friends was spoiled by a managerial jobs worth who seemed to think that you would be served at his leisure.

Me and a few friends were having a few drinks. When one of us tried to order another round he was refused service. Absolutely no idea why. It’s not as if we were drunk or behaving badly. Thankfully Cafe Royal next were happy with our custom. Will not return. Appalling way to treat people.

A small group of us visited this pub for a couple of drinks. Service was initially good however trying to get served again was a challenge. Not sure if the "Manager" owns this establishment or is employed however he took offence for some reason when we asked for a second round, note no offensive language or aggressiveness involved maybe he was just having a bad day? Edinburgh excels at giving great customer experiences unfortunately The Guildford Arms does not! We will never go back.

Shocking service. My friends and I were not served because The bar man took a dislike to us for what we could see as no apparent reason. Wouldn’t back down after seeing we were sober and In good spirits. Their loss

We ate in the upstairs gallery on a rugby weekend. The service and food was great. I regretted having the seafood chowder as a starter. It together with an excellent steak pie filled me to the brim and a little bit more.

Just popped in for a soup and a drink at lunchtime. The upstairs is more like a restaurant but you can eat downstairs too. Great Victorian style building.

It's better to go on a weekdays it's very busy at weekends..

Probably always going to be a bit in the shadow of its glittering neighbour, but the Guildford Arms is a real gem. An old-fashioned boozer with great craic and a good range of drinks. Although locals may laugh, we found it difficult to find decent pubs in the very centre of Edinburgh, but the Guildford was all we needed.

Read some of the listed reviews and we nearly didn't go but so glad we did the pub was buzzing packed with people The dining area was deserted not a soul but we decided to order and what a fabulous meal the BEST STEAK PIE I have ever had and I like steak pies and my wife's Veggie meal was great also. Had a great chat with Ian who looked after us who told us loads about thee history of the pub. Anytime we are in Edinburgh from now on THIS is where we will be eating.

An absolute must for edinburgh. The charming intererior and delightful wooden revolving door make you feel like you've stepped back in time and you're in the best place in the city. The beers on tap were great and diverse and the food was fab. I had a starter portion of the vegan haggis and I was emotional about how yum it was. 10/10

For dining it's fine the guy who serves the tables is very nice and friendly, the food is great. But for drinking it's not great the staff treat you superficially and are a bit snooty.

We did not dine but visited for the bar excellent beers poured by efficient, polite and friendly staff . The Victorian splendour of the establishment is well worth experiencing.

I'm pretty sure the positive reviews are from people that either only drink there, or are hammered when they eat. There's obviously a reason they only have 10 tables in the "dining" area. . Let's get the bad out of the way. The burger was bland, dry, and dense. I wouldn't be surprised if the patties are premade and frozen. The fries were also bland. I know they have salt and pepper there, it was on the table. Unfortunately, the drink selection wasn't great either. It is also apparently not possible to put a scoop of mash on the plate instead of fries, so don't bother asking. I actually walked out and went to McDonald's around the corner and got better food Now the good. Our server was solid, and she did everything she could to take care of us.

The beer is decent 4 star. The service is a transactional 3 star. This is a first in all my reviews.....the pub itself is utterly jaw dropping push to a must visit 5 star. Utterly beautiful. Extravagant Victorian Scotland. Architecture at its best. Wow!

Their website says they serve food until 2200, 7 days a week. Came in at 2050 tonight: "we stopped food 10 minutes ago".

Came in here for our first drink as a married couple. A bit disappointed we didn't manage to get a seat. They had some nice beers on tap but we only stayed for one.
