Rose Street Brewery in Edinburgh, City of

Hi I am a professional alcoholic from Poland I am very hard to impress when it comes to alcoholic beverages but last Saturday I had an outstanding experience at this establishment. I consumed the Nicolson's pale ale and Hepcat (in large quantities), which suggested by an outstanding employee that I believe was called Jessica. Such an experience stands to be truly unforgettable. It is my firm belief that Jessica should be running all Brewery's in the UK. Thank you dearly

Nice staff, great haggis and mince pie

Fantastic traditional pub in the heart of Edinburgh, great atmosphere, excellent location and if we are looking for a few drinks on a weekend we often visit this pub/restaurant, I haven't eaten here but the food that comes out looks awesome ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Friendly and attentive staff. In the lower part of the place you can snack and have something to drink. For lunch and dinner, you have to go upstairs. We tried the rib and fillet 'pies' (with mashed potato and carrot) which are very delicious and recommended. On the menu there are other typical things such as fish and chips and salmon which were fresh and very juicy. They also recommended the Cullen skink soup and we liked trying the cranachan for dessert. As for the price, it is fine, medium-high: a round of beers, a starter to share, three main courses and two desserts cost about £30 per person.

It was a restaurant that broke the prejudice that British food was not tasty. It was better than I expected and it seems like a great place to try Scottish food. It's a great restaurant to enjoy beer or alcoholic beverages.

Love the new look of the bar and it’s great to see the Landlord pulling a pint behind the bar. Cask ale was a little cold for me but a great experience all round

Popped in before our flight home and the food and service was next to none. When I’m back in Edinburgh again I will be sure to come back. Exceptional 👍🏼

Haggis, neeps and tatties were great, highly recommend the steak and pale ale pie. Snug but comfortable dining room upstairs which we managed to get a seat. Friendly and good service. Would happily visit again.

I was here last Friday evening with friends for a few drinks. The service was good and there was a good selection of craft beers. A good friendly atmosphere too.

Great pub with very friendly girls behind the bar can't recommend enough

It is always crowded, there was live music but you could hardly hear the commotion there was. But it is a nice place.

We had a meal here on a wet Friday December night. we were in Edinburgh for a 2 night break to sigfhtsee and visit the Christmas Market. The dining room is compact and intimate. The service is excellent, and although they were very busy none of the staff seemed flustered. The food was excellent. A very enjoyable meal.

Didn't eat here, stopped for a drink great atmosphere very popular pub busy but was quite quick at getting a drink.

Had a brilliant afternoon in the Rose Street Brewery. Derek and the staff are excellent hosts. Polite, knowledgeable and well trained. Food is excellent. Best pint of big juicy in town! Keep it up guys.

Popped in dinner in the upstairs dining room. Nice, friendly place. Staff were great and the Steak and Ale Pie was fantastic. Apparently, my wife's salmon was also very nice.

Very good restaurant with a choice of delicious pies, typical of here. The restaurant is located upstairs because the part on the ground floor is reserved for the bar. Be careful, small restaurant with little space.

Magnificent pub, with very fair dishes. It feels like we're eating at grandma's on Sunday. The waiters/waitresses are very nice, the dishes are served rather quickly. A large selection of drinks is also available. I highly recommend

Great wee pub. One of the best on rose Street. Manager Derek was really helpful with helping us choose the best beers and it's one of the best pints of juicy in town!

Just went for quick bevvies. Wife had Pimms n lemonade, I managed pint, and double whiskey on ice. Nice atmosphere 👌 In my review, that's a very high rating considering we were only there for 40 mins, and didn't eat for reviewing table service, but I am sure it would have been fantastic 😀 👍

I have decided to edit my response, as I wrote it in anger after a long day and walking a long way on tired legs with elderly relatives just to get there specifically. This place is closed, despite the fact it says open on Google. Please note they do not reopen until 5th November so don't walk all the way there and ignore Google! I would love the opportunity to review the food and service but won't be back in Scotland for a long time. This one star review is only to inform the current closure and avoid what we did.

Scottish pub in the center of Edinburgh. Even without a reservation they let us sit upstairs. The place isn't very big, but overall it's very nice. The menu offers excellent Scottish dishes, from starters to desserts (the Cranachan is excellent) and finally Scottish whiskies. The portions are not abundant. The staff is kind. The only flaw of the venue: the lack of live music.

It was quiet when we visited. Staff were busy cleaning, which is always good to see. Good pint of Guinness and the prosecco I'm informed was nice. Restaurant upstairs on the other had looked quite busy.

Great pub, was chatting to an American couple was great to hear stories from far and wide 👍🏻

The VIBE, STAFF, FOOD & LOCATION Staff were extremely helpful and cheerful and efficient. We are celebrating our 55th wedding anniversary ❤️ and found this was just right ✅️ we've even booked for Sunday lunch it's so nice.

Excellent restaurant in Edinburgh's new town!

We came here by chance. It was an extraordinary discovery. Delicious food and excellent service. Very friendly staff. We had dinner several nights. The stew is highly recommended! ....... Everything was great.... The staff, the environment, and of course the food!! A lovely place!

We had a lovely meal of salmon and chorizo with baby potatoes... really great. Would highly recommend.

Managed to snag a table upstairs - fantastic spot with a warm, familiar feel to it. Staff were friendly, efficient which made our meal so much better too. Has a cracking burger, as well as some nachos and the haggis (yum). Also a nice glass of Tennent's too, to wash it all down. The fish and chips looked amazing too, just saying!

Whilst in Edinburgh, my brother and I visited this pub to see if we could eat and were fortunate to get a table upstairs. The Balmoral chicken is fantastic! Great service by the young ladies on duty. It must be popular because the place was rammed all evening.

Very nice pub in Edinburgh. Basic menu but with traditional dishes. Very good and plentiful dishes. Exceptional beer.

The chicken was dry in the salad but the green tasted as if there was a lot of fungus in them. Not an amazing experience

Had the most amazing steak pie and pint of beer here. Great service. Cannot recommend highly enough. The rest of our party had great food too. Make time to visit if you are in Edinburgh.

Only limited experience in the pub

Just before entering the pub, I saw the chef (young, tall, skinny guy) entering the kitchen. I was sceptical, but so glad he changed my mind about skinny chefs ('never trust a skinny cook'😁). Haggis, neeps and tatties were divine!

A very warm welcome and a very good meal at a reasonable price. We remember the address.

Cozy pub with restaurant on the first floor. Had a nice meal on the first evening in Edinburgh. Service is fine and the food was good. Wide choice of beers and other drinks.

Lovely pint of Guinness, which is possibly the most important measure of a pub. Food was lovely as always, eaten here a few times over the years.

Great place for some classic pub food and a drink. Had the Lamb pie, it was really tasty in itself, fresh vegetables instead of frozen like your get most other places was a huge plus. Only wished the pie had a bit more seasoning. The staff were really friendly and the service was quick I'd definitely recommend this to any looking for pub food made to order

They had a singer in the evening on Thursday which was very good. It was also very nice to sit outside on Rose Street.

Second time during the same trip to Edinburgh. We loved the food, beer and the friendly staff!

I made a reservation for 4 tonight without realizing we actually needed 6 seats. The staff was so accommodating & kind about it. I wanted to say thank you to the servers on tonight (specifically the girl with the hufflepuff tattoo) because I know it can be really frustrating when a mistake like this happens! she was incredibly welcoming and made it work for us. The food was also delicious & the atmosphere was friendly & homey! Thank you times a million for a great night & the best servers !!

We were wandering around looking for somewhere to eat, and just walked in off the street. They were very busy but a table was just leaving so we were lucky. A good range of food on the menu, and we plumped for the lamb shank pie and the crofter pie, along with a bottle of wine. The food was very good, especially the crofter pie, and the food was very fairly priced. The wine was a tad expensive at £24 for an ordinary red, but this doesn't detract from the service and great atmosphere. The only thing which disappointed was the automatically added service charge of 10%. It may have been mentioned on the menu and I missed it. This is becoming more and more common - my preference is to tip well according to the service. Nevertheless, a good choice of eaterie.

Chicken pie was frozen….not cold….20 minutes to get another..Mac and cheese was good…. Table next to use….got free drinks due to slow service…..I got full price for a frozen pie….mash potatoes were tasty….thats it….

Nice atmosphere. I was recommended to go here by a friend for the pies. Sadly I got the chicken pie which was small, hard as a rock, 80% pastry and one small cube of chicken for 15 pound. The beef pie options looked much better.

We arrived from Inverness late and hungry. We found it by chance on our way downtown. We had lunch almost alone at 16:00 and the food was sensational and so was the beer. The very nice waitress, a sweetheart.

Excellent experience. Excellent food and courtesy of the staff. Recommended for families.

Definitely the highlight ✨️ of our visit to Edinburgh. We needed food and drink 🍸 in that order as we were famished. Had already decided that we wanted to taste Scottish food 😋 and from looking at the menu outside it had everything 😋 👌. Nice seating area outside in the sunshine 🌞, nice roomy bar area serving good selection of beers 🍻 and light bites, upstairs you have a lovely bar and restaurant room for a full meal which we were in need of. If this place hasn't won awards I'd be surprised..Thanks to all the staff 😤.

I was directed here by a mate who used to frequent this spot while attending University - in 1990! By all appearances, it is in the same state with the same atmosphere as it was then - delightful. The old couch he used to relax on was gone, but that's understandable after many years. The pints were spot on, as was the haggis, neeps, and tatties. I had that as a starter then moved on to fish and chips. The location was easily accessed from my hotel near the Royal Mile, and I arrived early enough to enjoy a solid lunch before heading off to Edinburgh Castle and the Scotch Whisky Experience. As someone on a visit from California and only interested in local food and drink, I found it amusing to find the table next to me were six folk from Scotland - each of whom were enjoying what appeared to be a quite passable plate of nachos!

Sorry for the half hearted review, Only stopped for a quick pint while waiting on my wife but I'm sure I'll be back. The food being served look good. Tommy.

After an afternoon walking Edinburgh Castle, we were looking for somewhere to re-fuel - hello Rose Street Brewery. Typical Scottish pub downstairs, restaurant upstairs. Great selection of meals, we went with the HAND-PULLED LAMB SHANK SHEPHERD'S PIE & STOVIES with a side of chunky chips, one of the best meals we've had in Scotland (we landed 8 days ago!) Service was spot on, food was served promptly - we will be back when in Edinburgh next, highly recommend it

I Really liked this place. The food was amazing and the food selection as well. Local selection of foods and drinks. When you come from Germany you get very surprised how friendly and helpful the service is elsewhere. Would recommend this place for everyone who is coning to Edinburgh.

Somewhat upscale pub / restaurant. Great meat pies of various sorts, as well as burgers and a variety of entrees, many of them of a Scottish tilt. We were there mid-afternoon, so low crowds. Service was quite good. Good, pub-like feel. Lots of historic pictures and discussions of history on the walls. Would certainly eat here again.

We had salmon and pies, 6 of us. Everything was perfect.

We enjoyed the food and beer here; The Balmoral chicken was quite good. We didn’t make a reservation, but apparently we got very lucky because shortly after we were seated and more and more people tried to dine, lots were turned away because of a big group that had a reservation for around the time we were about to leave. So don’t disappoint yourself and be sure to make a reservation if you want to eat here, or at the very least show up before 5:30pm.

Came for dinner in the evening. We went up to the restaurant. Fast and pleasant service. Varied but not huge menu (often a sign of quality). There is something for every taste. We tried the meat pies, with mash (probably homemade because it was delicious!) with 2 carrots cooked just right. All with a Scottish beer. Top moment 😃

A real pub atmosphere, hearty and good dishes, good beer brewed especially for them (Nicholson's beer). A menu suitable for children and very well served. The only point to improve would be the speed of service. More than 35 minutes of waiting for just one dish is quite long. Other than that, not at all disappointed with the cuisine.

Literally just sat down when a man from behind the bar came over and said under 25 have to buy food to have a drink. Here with my friend both not under 25 offered to show ID but told us no. It’s Scotland law and we had to buy food. Can anyone tell me if this is true as it’s the first time visiting

Called in here for a drink and meal before our flight. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was really good. We had beef rib and pulled brisket pie, mac and cheese, chip and garlic bread. The food came out fairly quickly was piping hot and very tasty.

Rose Street Brewery is the second Nicholson’s Gin and Ale Establishment we’ve enjoyed in as many days. Our server, Claire, was lovely and provided warm and friendly service. My husband had the stovies which he thought were excellent, and while not a traditional item, the macaroni and cheese was also wonderful. The fish platter is a food option for two with some items served on bread with a specialty sauce. The fried pieces were excellent but we would have preferred the sauce on the side of the shrimp and smoked salmon. The dining room upstairs isn’t large and 2 seat tables are small but it afforded us an opportunity to have a warm and friendly chat with a couple from Aberdeen seated next to us and share travel stories.

Looking for a nice place to have dinner and popped into Rose Street Brewery. I am so glad I did, the food was delicious, service and atmosphere excellent. I tried the Cullen Skink soup - highly recommend. Sticky toffee pudding with custard - the best.

Nice, original bar with a good selection of whiskey at fair prices. Nice atmosphere. Friendly and fast staff. We didn't eat anything there, so no review of the food.
