The Canny Man's in Edinburgh, City of

We really enjoyed this spot for some dinner on a Saturday night. Nice and busy, but easy to book a table same day. They do a range of open sandwiches but we opted for the dinner specials and the burger and pork cheek were both excellent. Great service too, would recommend.

Went with family on Christmas Day. Service was first class and the meal was delicious. Staff very welcoming and attentive. Excellent in every respect. Would highly recommend for drinks and food.

Bunch of locals, came in yesterday as part of a post-NY catch up - with the organiser wanting to show us the storied venue. While everything with my meal and most of our party’s was fine, one of us got pretty severe food poisoning soon after, having ordered the salmon open sandwich. Led us to question the food hygiene practices and write this, which I’m usually against doing.

Really enjoyed our visit great finish to the night the barmaid even ordered a taxi back to the hotel.

Really excelling themselves these days and so glad that we still have places like the Canny Man's to call a home-from-home, as some very good businesses failed to make it through those difficult years, a few years ago. The food in its various guises offers something for everyone lunch and evening - personal favourites include the Portuguese fish stew, the steaks, the, the, the, etc. The teams behind the bar are excellently collaborative and supportive of each other and if someone doesn't know, someone else will. And the reintroduction of the 'Golden Drop' the Canny Man's own whisky (blended to the original recipe?) is the final stroke of genius and surely a talking point for anyone requiring a gentle introduction to the demon drink. Just go and enjoy!

We went for a few drinks on a Sunday evening. The bar was busy and had a nice hub-bub to it with lots of group chats. The service at the bar was quick and friendly. I could see plenty of people having a meal there as well, so it is clearly a popular local spot for food and drinks.

Great vibe at this lovely eccentric place in Morningside. Food is great and the staff cheerful. But why do you have to ask for the key to the loo?

The best pub in Scotland! Great food (best Haggis I've tried!), long list of malts, friendly staff, decorated with a sould. We had a lot of good laughs there and a fully stomach, what else could you wish for? :)

A couple of friends and I decided to have a drink after a day visiting the city, as it was close to our Airbnb. We were pleasantly surprised by the quirky decoration, and asked a waitress what her recomendation was, since we are not too keen on spiritual drinks. She recommended a local beer we enjoyed quite a lot as we chatted. To our surprise, the waitress was Polish and turned out she had a Spanish boyfriend in the past, so she told us some swear words in Spanish which made the experience even better and funnier and we had a good laugh with her. Totally reccomended!

Our AirBnb host suggested us this place and it was a great discover! The place and the atmosphere is authentic and very tipical. Far from the turist spots you could taste tipical scottish and Edinburgh's meals. We were very pleased by the all the plates we've ordered and also the bill was balanced. I would suggest to reserve a table in advance in order to be sure to have a seat For sure we'll return in here when we'll return in Edinburgh

This place was highly recommended To Us by a couple of locals. Although the interior had a lot of character our waiter was far from being attentive. Food was just okay. Great place to go for drinks with friends

The ambiance there is so beautiful !! We felt like we were in another time period ! So nice ! The food was absolutely delicious ! The bourguignon and the whiskey sauce chicken was incredible ! Thank you !

What a fabulous pub!!!! I loved the choice at the bar, the helpfulness of the staff, the quirkiness of the decor, and the feeling of being part of the fabric of history everywhere you went in the building. I will be sure to go back and have more than the one drink we had time for this time. Loved it.

This was a recommendation from a friend of mine, as I do like whisky, and they have a very varied types. They also advise other types of whisky to try, then we had dinner, and it was very enjoyable, I will be coming back again for another visit

We spent 3 days in The Lane Hotel and came for a drink each night at Canny Man's. Very nice, friendly atmosphere, professional and pleasant welcome. Large collection of whiskies. We particularly appreciated the small counter of the bar on the side and the professional of one of the waiters.

Server was absolutely rude beyond belief. He refused to let us order on our time and instead forced us to order very quickly before we could really consider the menu. It was very evident he wanted to get rid of us and turn the table. I have met so many friendly people in the UK but this guy was very rude. It took forever to get drinks and when we asked him he told us to shut up and be patient. He paid zero attention to our table and I don't doubt there was discriminatory attitudes held by him. The only good thing about this place is the atmosphere. Stay away from this place at all costs.

We had been looking forward to going to Canny Man's but were left extremely disappointed. The older bar man who 'greeted' us at the door at first completely ignored us and then when we asked if they happened to have a table available he was very impolite and rude. I have heard people say that the people in Morningside can be snobby and unfriendly but I had never experienced that since moving here several years ago until I went to the Canny Man's. Very disappointing. We will never try to get a table here again and we will be telling others not to bother either. Clearly just an overpriced tourist trap that doesn't care about its reputation with the locals.

I want to love this place but I can’t. The service is hit and miss, one day I gave up and left after about 10 minutes as nobody was around to serve, and it feels a bit cliquey if you know what I mean.

We stopped here before heading back in to the city after a long day of driving. We literally parked in front and walked in hoping for a seat. We were immediately seated and had one of the best meals of our trip to Scotland. Scallops and mussels were outstanding. The waitstaff was fast, kind, and friendly and the ambiance is fun and kitschy. Highly recommend.

Sean, the bartender is simply the best. He is very knowledgeable and friendly. My friends and I enjoy having whiskey and food here. Will come back for sure!

My wife and I took a friend to the Canny Man's for lunch last Thursday, a sound choice. Quality of the food was excellent, the portions generous and the prices reasonable. Our guest had the vegetarian Rissotto, found it delicious, but could not finish the very large portion, on a decent sized plate; a Doggie Bag was called for, and given. My wife had "Olivia's One Smile" with smoked salmon, poached salmon, prawns and cocktail mayonnaise; perfect she said, leaving a clean plate. I was tempted to have the same, but prefer when at home, to "poach " the salmon myself, and THEN cook it. So I settled for an old favourite, the "Medley" of rare roast beef and ham with salad and bread; and was not disappointed. Morningside in Edinburgh has long been famous for two things: one the Canny Man's, and two "Ladies with fur coats and nae knickers," (who were keeping up appearances). The fur coats are long gone. Invited friends to a Sunday roast at the Canny Man Edinburgh. Paid gastro pub prices for a school meal!!! Ordered sirloin beef roast. Received boot leather with gristle and fat. Was relieved it was only two thin slices. Roast potatoes were under cooked and anemic… thank god the barely warm gravy was there. The vegetables were another story/nightmare. Not recommended if you want to impress friends or relatives. Dining room had crammed in seating and insufficient table space. On the bright side, it is a nice looking pub with an outdoor seating area.

The place is both a bar and restaurant in Morningside, outside of the tourist area. They have a huge selection of scotch. It was a nice place with a large menu plus dinner specials. We both ordered the dinner specials which were very good, tasty and nice portions. The service was ok it was a busy Friday night. I would recommend going for a good casual place with good food and drinks and away from the tourist parts of town.

Loved this place! Its atmosphere is magic, it makes you feel you are traveling through time, with all the antiques on the walls and its 1800s furniture. The food was delicious and the staff was very kind. I definitely suggest visiting this pub/restaurant off the most touristic beaten track

We were treated differently compared to other customers during our lunch there. It's also hard to get noticed by the server when we would like to order/have the bill. You could get better food with the same price in other pubs around easily.

It’s such a shocking bar. The dazzling old objects inside are filled with the entire bar and even the ceiling. The dim yellow light reflects lazily and softly on various old objects, making people feel like they are in a Wong Kar-Wai restaurant. In the movie scene, reality and illusion seem to swing back and forth...so it is a bar worth visiting

Little disappointed on this visit to the Canny Man, barmaid serving drinks was friendly, didn't find the lady taking food orders very friendly or polite, having spent over 120.00 for a couple of hours mainly on our drinks, was a little disappointed with my dining experience on this occasion. The open medley sandwiches were not as nicely presented as normal, we were not left with basic things like salt or pepper on the table and although, I could have asked but could not see the waitress, appreciate she will have been busy placing the orders etc. I always take photos of the food drinks and todays food was not presented or tasted as good as previous, occasions. Still a lovely clean place with a well stocked range of drinks, didn't see the normal Management on site who keep a good house and always say hello when passing the tables, which I like as makes you feel welcome and adds a personal touch etc.

Calling this an Edinburgh institution is surely an understatement - a truly amazing bar crammed full of odd artefacts - just wish I had the time to stay longer.

A beautifully eclectic establishment serving some lovely whiskeys. Prices are about right. Didn't order any food so can't comment there, wouldve been nice if the staff knew about whiskeys but wasn't a problem. The place looks fantastic, would love to see a vintage bandit/automaton in there but that's just my opinion (can source if you want one). Will definitely be visiting again when next in Scotland.

Went for dinner for the first time, food was lovely and I'd highly recommend the Haggis main course. The best bit about my visit was the staff especially the young boy behind the bar, Lewis who made me a fantastic cocktail and was a pleasure to talk to when he brought it over. We will definitely be back next time we're in Edinburgh.

Very much an Edinburgh or Morningside institution. Have been coming here off and on for years; at least 30 of them. Try to visit every time I'm in Edinburgh as I grew up here. I'd agree with comments that say it can be a hit and miss but the decor is fabulous and my overall impression is very positive; yes the staff can be a little cold at times, but not overly so. Also took my dad here a few years ago and they could not have been more polite and courteous to a man in his 80s. Beer and whisky selection is good and beer well kept. Haven't eaten here so can't comment.

Been a while, probably 20 years, since I've been in the Canny Mann, great as ever, dog friendly so good for us today.

ok, technically it's a pub but in reality this is a fantastic antiquarium where you can  have a pint or two! beautiful and cosy, the pub has several rooms decorated with all kinds of old stuff you can possibly imagine. if you don't like hoarders, this place might annoy you, but give it a try. It's super cool!

Great quirky pub that's one of the oldest in Edinburgh. An array of drink options to suit all tastes. Staff all great and special mention to the young guy Lewis behind the bar who was a smashing lad.

Loved this place and would have eaten here if the website would have been a bit clearer. Overall, a tiny bar makes getting your drink frustrating but once you're sat down, everything is excellent. A lot of choices for your drinks. On the 2nd time we came we got a dessert brought out and a cocktail not on the menu made for us. All with a smile. Go there!

Traditional pub with really quirky décor from 1871 and excellent food. The haggis neeps and tatties have got to be enjoyed, as well as lots of fish on menu. Will definitely be returning on our next trip to Edinburgh

Wouldn't bother coming here. The attitude of the staff here stinks for no apparent reason. The atmosphere isn't cosy and casual like other pubs. Just avoid the open sandwiches. They are dreadful for what you pay for.

A great find amongst Morningsides tumultuous throngs of Gastro Pubs and modern coffee houses. Nothing wrong with the aforementioned however to then stumbles across the antiquity that is the Canny Man is refreshing. Great atmosphere and crazy decor. Wonderful wonderful service and a fantastic selection of open sandwiches. Great work team Canny Man a pleasure to dine with you..

Really old cool bar, huge selection of whiskeys. Great staff, food was really good. It's a very busy bar so if you want to eat there on the weekend you might need to book a table.

Was recommended by someone who had visited a long time ago... presumeably when Rick Stein visited. Don't be fooled. The food is diabolical. Open sandwich? Cold and bland, horribly cheap ingredients. Mussels were no way near fresh and were cold. My partner had to take a shot after leaving as we were worried he would have food poisoning from them! The people were standoffish and only gave you the slightest courtesy when really smothered with politeness. Sorry, but that's YOUR job! Really disappointed after going out of our way and paying for parking to visit. The decor was good hence any stars... but just don't bother!

A true treasure. Wonderful food, atmosphere and the team could not be kinder. The setting is simply unique and amazing. Rick Stein was absolutely correct when he named it the best pub in the world. I always look forward to visiting every time I visit Edinburgh. The wine list is exceptional and very well priced. Highly recommended, especially the Sunday roast!

I have been here a few times for drinks etc but I think today was the first time I fully appreciated it! The decor of the Canny Man's is rustic, interesting and thought provoking. There is many a beverage to choose from, especially for those looking to have a dram or two. Their menu has a good range to choose from too and their food is delicious. I recommend this pub very highly after my experience today

Canny Man a lot quite than I expected but that was not unwelcome Food was OK but although asking for coffee at the end of my meal the serving staff seemed to disappear
