Yvan, Sol, and Jess were amazing! Came to Edinburgh on a solo trip and they made me feel welcomed! Very nice people and it was a really great experience. 11/10 customer service!

A great spot for a few drinks. Large selection of alcohol, and good outside seating to people watch!

The food and service were both alright, the experience was quite forgettable. The whole place felt chaotic.

A friend recently introduced me to this place and I adore the space! And the staff are lovely! I'm sure I'll be a regular and I'll drag others to join me! Update: I did indeed drag others to join me! Stopped in tonight for fish and chips and a couple pints. Delicious! Friendly service and we got a table with hardly any wait. Wonderful time!

Food is excellent, portions seemed a bit small but I found this to be the norm in Scotland. Staff is very polite and amicable and the place is nicely decorated with pieces from the city's history

"Tori" was so kind and fast. The food and the atmosphere were both amazing! Recommend it for anyone looking to enjoy traditional food in a cosy and resutical location.

Food was ok if not a bit pricey. That said it is a city centre pub and everywhere else is just as pricey

The server was very helpful with ale choices. Salmon fishcakes were lovely.

We've been here several times and it's always been great. The food is very good and so are the staff. but today, they sent us away first and when we came back they were rude (ignored and didn't even look at us when they talked to us)

Fine pieces of meals, not extraordinary but fine though. The ambiance is kind and old fashionned in a good way. Mixing victorian and modern visual stuff. The service hasn't any default, it's all good. The prices are not cheap, and the food itself is... Fine. Maybe i will return once again here.

Friendly service, great pub vibe and solid pub food. My husband and I enjoyed a quick meal there. He had the Mac and cheese and I had a nice salad and delicious pea and mint soup. they accommodated by celiac beautifully and I was very appreciative.

Friendly and knowledgable staff. Lots of whisky options and affordable for tourists. Haggis was delicious! Kitchen kindly adapted haggis fritters to be gluten free upon request. Would come again.

The Malt Shovel is located on one of the nicest streets in the city. It's been 21 years since we were here. It was nice then and now it was great again. Very pleasant reunion with this pub. A lot of tasty beers (I did not have whisky this time), good pub food (Balmoral burger with haggis was delicious) and the service was friendly and good.

Nice company, Several kinds of beers on tap to choose from. Nice service. The atmosphere is very pleasant. Food very good, Fish&Chips nice portion and very tasty. Haggis (was only written on the board as a speciality) excellent food, although only a starter, but a sufficient portion. I recommend visiting the business.

The wait for the food is a little longer, but thanks to the welcoming atmosphere and the service, it doesn't matter. The food was excellent

I find it hard to share details of my experience at the place, given it was a few weeks ago, but I'm not sure if that is to do with age, time passing, or pints drank. Drank or drunk? Pints drunk, pints I had drunk, pints I had drank, what verb tenses even are these? What verb tenses are these even? It's really remarkable how little knowledge of syntax and grammar as us lowly First language English speakers have, remarkable and shameful at the same time, I feel like I'm waving my hands In front of me wading through the dark, while tall Dutch people stand above me debating future perfect continuous in the passive voice

Only called in for a beer,but my wife insisted we try the food too…proves she’s a lady with immaculate taste! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful,service for the drinks was speedy and the beer recommendation was perfect….now onto the food! We ordered the cheese and bacon burger,the malt shovel house burger and a portion of onion rings….they came quickly and were unbelievably tasty…well cooked,full of flavour not at all greasy and filling without making us feel bloated…absolutely hands down the best burger meal we’ve eaten! From the outside it just looks like a classic olde world pub but the food is out of this world…go and give it a try,it’s only round the corner from Waverley station,an Edinburgh gem!

Great spot close to the tourist areas but with the authenticity of a real Scotish pub. The staff was fantastic with Flo really standing out and making our 4 visits, 4 days in a row the best! Highly recommend!!!!

Older lady that 'served' us was incredibly unwelcoming, saw her being rude to other tourists as well. Would have left without buying anything if my friend hadn't already ordered a drink. Honestly surprised there's not more negative reviews based on what I witnessed today

Totally nice pub in the old town. Great service and the food was really OK, even if you don't have the highest demands on the size of a steak and the quality of the meat. Fish and chips were very good. Portions larger than usual in the city.

What a lovely little pub! Came in at the weekend for some lunch and Jamie was so welcoming. So nice to get off the streets for a bit and be welcomed with a smile. He was so attentive and checked on our food which was brilliant. We will definitely be back!

Staff were fantastic so freindly and welcoming . Very dog freindly the staff were great with our little 6 month old dog.

Staff really rude... asked for a scotch coffee and the bartender seemed annoyed at this. Upon leaving my boyfriend and I thanked her and she didn't bother to look at us or say anything in response (we were well within earshot). I've never given a 1 star review in my life but I felt like we were not welcome here

Very Scottish pub 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, we each had a burger with chips and everything was good! I recommend the whiskey sauce and the IPA beer!

First meal in Edinburgh I went in with my daughter inspired by the menu and by a desire to eat fish and chips again, which I can say was very, very good, my daughter's Mac and cheese was also good. Friendly and courteous staff, small but welcoming environment. Super recommended

Ate here because it was close to our Hotel and we were very impressed. Seating was tight but the food was delicious and the service excellent.

Ordered the fish and chips. It was raw on the inside. Complained and they replaced it but didn't appear to be bothered like it happens all the time.

I tried the Sirloin steak, good meat but a little nervous all the same. I also tried their Belhaven beer, a locally made beer (in the photo), excellent with caramelized notes, very original. I don't drink beer, so a great discovery. The waitresses are smiling and the welcome is warm. The pub is superbly decorated and in its own right, we come to Scotland for that 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿!
