The staff were incredibly friendly and polite, they were quick to get our drinks and the food was served within 10 minutes if ordering! The food was delicious, and very fairly priced for the great taste and service!

This place was one of my top destinations during my University days, back in 2003/2004. I specifically LOVED hamburger, topped with succulent chili, mushrooms, and red kidney beans. Something I failed to obtain from anywhere else till today. I remember the young lady waitress asking me if I was Maxican because I always asked for the same. Coffee was excellent too. Loved it, great memories.

Lovely pub with super friendly staff. Bent over backwards to make our dog feel welcomed with water and treats. Super fast service on both drinks and food. Small menu of pub classics which were of a good standard. We had our tea there and went back again the next day for lunch because we knew it was nice.

Popped in after dinner to grab a few drinks before closing time. Bar staff were great, and drinks reasonably priced. Great location.

I was impressed by the friendly customers and delicious food. Great for ale and decent food. All the tables in the restaurant were full, and there were people standing around enjoying their beers, but it wasn't too noisy or hectic, so it felt good.

First Scottish pub I tried during my stay and I wasn't disappointed. On a Sunday evening, I went there around 8pm without a reservation and I had no difficulty finding a seat. Very characteristic environment, typical Christmas atmosphere, fantastic staff. The sandwich I tried was very good. Excellent price: recommended

The Malt Shovel is located on one of the nicest streets in the city. It's been 21 years since we were here. It was nice then and now it was great again. Very pleasant reunion with this pub. A lot of tasty beers (I did not have whisky this time), good pub food (Balmoral burger with haggis was delicious) and the service was friendly and good.

Pleasant city centre bar and restaurant handy for the nearby Waverley Station. Came in for a pint on a quiet Tuesday afternoon and staff were welcoming and friendly, beer excellent quality and not outrageously overpriced considering it's location. Would certainly come back here again.

Nice and typical atmosphere Staff friendly and nice Drink prices within the average Food was disappointing: - Mac & cheese pretty tasteless served with a small salad with minimal condiment ingredients. - steak was so hard and chewy accompanied by too peppery whiskey sauce and salad with too much onion - halloumi was too little halloumi and too much pastry -steak and Ale pie was actually really good. 4 mains and 3 pints 1 dessert=95 pounds. Pricey for the quality

I'm absolutely shocked by the disgusting attitude of one of your staff. My partner and I came in sat down and politely asked a server for some assistance before ordering and were greeted with the most vile look and response. We immediately left as we're so shocked. Please have a word with your staff! Manners and politeness cost nothing.

Service on the whole good & food was ok. One of the bar staff had a streaming cold which was horrible and he should not have been in work spreading germs like that 😕.

Pub atmosphere with cask ales and good food. My wife and I both had the steak and ale pie with a fried Haggis appetizer. Everything was well prepared and very good. It was a great way to end our trip to Scotland.

Very good food and professional writers. When a lot of people are inside and the writers are busy, you have to order by yourself directly at the bar.

A friend recently introduced me to this place and I adore the space! And the staff are lovely! I'm sure I'll be a regular and I'll drag others to join me! Update: I did indeed drag others to join me! Stopped in tonight for fish and chips and a couple pints. Delicious! Friendly service and we got a table with hardly any wait. Wonderful time!

Food is excellent, portions seemed a bit small but I found this to be the norm in Scotland. Staff is very polite and amicable and the place is nicely decorated with pieces from the city's history

The server was very helpful with ale choices. Salmon fishcakes were lovely.

We've been here several times and it's always been great. The food is very good and so are the staff. but today, they sent us away first and when we came back they were rude (ignored and didn't even look at us when they talked to us)

Fine pieces of meals, not extraordinary but fine though. The ambiance is kind and old fashionned in a good way. Mixing victorian and modern visual stuff. The service hasn't any default, it's all good. The prices are not cheap, and the food itself is... Fine. Maybe i will return once again here.

Friendly service, great pub vibe and solid pub food. My husband and I enjoyed a quick meal there. He had the Mac and cheese and I had a nice salad and delicious pea and mint soup. they accommodated by celiac beautifully and I was very appreciative.

I find it hard to share details of my experience at the place, given it was a few weeks ago, but I'm not sure if that is to do with age, time passing, or pints drank. Drank or drunk? Pints drunk, pints I had drunk, pints I had drank, what verb tenses even are these? What verb tenses are these even? It's really remarkable how little knowledge of syntax and grammar as us lowly First language English speakers have, remarkable and shameful at the same time, I feel like I'm waving my hands In front of me wading through the dark, while tall Dutch people stand above me debating future perfect continuous in the passive voice

Only called in for a beer,but my wife insisted we try the food too…proves she’s a lady with immaculate taste! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful,service for the drinks was speedy and the beer recommendation was perfect….now onto the food! We ordered the cheese and bacon burger,the malt shovel house burger and a portion of onion rings….they came quickly and were unbelievably tasty…well cooked,full of flavour not at all greasy and filling without making us feel bloated…absolutely hands down the best burger meal we’ve eaten! From the outside it just looks like a classic olde world pub but the food is out of this world…go and give it a try,it’s only round the corner from Waverley station,an Edinburgh gem!
