The best restaurants serving British food in England

Where to start! Booked table online no email confirmation so tried ringing but just a recorded message. We arrived via the back door from the car park passing an open door to the kitchen and saw a heap of Yorkshire Puddings on a shelf open to the elements. Relieved to have a table we settled in and ordered our drinks one of which arrived incorrectly. Ordered two turkey dinners minus the 'yorkies' !! It came rather quickly which in itself seemed odd. It was below average for the cost. We then ordered desserts, sticky toffee pudding with custard and a lemon meringue pie. These were not good and obviously bought in. Expressing our disappointment staff weren't interested even though they had asked our opinion. We decided not to order anything else and was then presented with the bill without us asking for it. Over the time we were there we were served by numerous different staff not allocated one waitress which would have been preferable. On paying we again were asked how everything had been and again we told them we had felt very rushed and it had not been the relaxing Sunday lunch we had envisaged. Absolutely no apology and she obviously resented our negative comments. In hindsight I wish I had read recent reviews and realised the extensive menu was somewhat dubious and probably not all prepared on the premises. Pub is beautiful inside, such a shame about being rushed with lack of customer service and poor food. We will not be returning.

She has a beautiful smile, the preparation to said smile is even cuter. I hope you witness said opportunity from your visit.

Good food at a fair price, the scampi wraps and the scampi and chips were well cooked, a good portion and very tasty with particularly good coffee.

Fully recommend the Doc for breakfast lunch or dinner fantastic vibe great live music in the summer. Just a fantastic attitude love just chilling with a coffee services. Amazing staff actually care the venue has had refurbishment which really shows and is in great order. Fully recommend it Food and drink is great

Didn't stay but went for an evening meal. Can't comment on the accommodation. The food was delicious. Highly recommended.

Robin is a man, a man of seemingly average stature upon first inspection, but after sharing just a few moments with him, it becomes clear he is no man, but a god. Thank you Robin for having us, we talk about you every few days.

This was a wonderful find and I have been back on a number of occasions. The food is amazing and the staff and atmosphere is brilliant. The sad note to this is that it is closing soon and we will be missing yet another excellent pub due to lack of custom. I’ll be very sad to see the end of yet another amazing establishment.

Good food but should i say expensive.

We visited on the opening day of the new season, and they were having a few technical problems but the lady who was obviously the proprietor was overcoming them smoothly. We had a crab pastie and a mackerel ciabatta. Both were utterly delicious, but small portion sizes for £7.50 and £9.50.

I cannot believe that I am just now leaving the review! We have visited in December as a surprise birthday treat for me. There is not much to say apart from perfection! I am not surprised by their first star, and I can imagine myself them getting more in future. The standard is just so high. Food was incredible, creative, but also very familiar in a way. Fun but also not relying on theatre to deliver. The taste truly comes first and presentation is there to elevate, which was just wonderfully balanced. The sake is just incredible. The service was on just as high standard as food. We felt very comfortable, looked after but not overbearing. I could go on and on how wonderful this all was, but really it’s just better to go visit by yourself if you have a chance

Absolutely fantastic roast! We stumbled upon this gem in Devon and were blown away. The food was top quality — everything cooked to perfection with generous portions. Service was speedy and super friendly, you can tell it’s a family-run place with a lot of heart. It had a warm, welcoming vibe that made the whole experience even better. Highly recommend if you’re after a proper roast and great hospitality! Big thank you to John who looked after us all!

Had our anniversary dinner here on a cold snowy night in December. The atmosphere was very warm and cozy and the staff were very attentive. Food was fantastic, the butternut risotto was the best risotto i've ever had. Sticky toffee pudding was an additional bonus.
