The best restaurants serving British food in South West

We didnt try the pub food so cant comment. Lovely atmosphere and staff very friendly. We had my grand daughters birthday party there. Lovely afternoon

Very friendly warm pub. We were surprised it was quite busy on a Monday afternoon but after we'd eaten I'm not surprised. Best steak and ale pie ever! Good beer too. Reasonable prices. 11/10

Stopped overnight as a family utilising 3 rooms. This is service the way it should be from arrival to departure. A perfect break.

Such a welcoming visit into a proper pub. Locals, workers finishing after a shift and tourists like us staying at Forest Holidays. The footpath network is extensive and worth printing a map and not just relying on your phone but this is linked to Forest Holidays by a reasonably well lit footpath and has two local stores that don’t show up on Google maps on the way. We picked this pub based on reviews and the footpath as we have two kids and a dog. Staff were really welcoming and helpful, kid friendly and definitely dog friendly. As a result of the good food, good service and choice of seating options we opted for a return visit instead of trying the Dog and Muffler or the New Inn. If we make it out another night to one of those I will write a review accordingly.

Visited this great pub twice while we were on holiday for a week in the area. So pleased we did, the food was excellent. The portions are very generous. The staff so friendly. We will definitely call in again when we are in beautiful Dorset.

Came here while on holiday in the area. The prices seemed good on the menu in the window, and it looked popular. We were very happy with the food, the welcome and the drinks. It's a good old fashioned English pub. We had the curry which was excellent, piping hot, and plentiful in quantity. The staff were really pleasant, and the locals at the bar added to the enjoyment. Very happy to give this pub 5 stars.

Went for the carvery today and wasn't disappointed! Tender beef and fresh tasting veg both cooked to perfection. I couldn't fault any of the food and all topped off with good beer, friendly faces and welcoming service. So glad this kitchen is back, up and running - this is what local pubs are all about 😀

Visited for midweek dinner whilst visiting the area. We had fish & chip- I can honestly say it was the worst fish & chips ever had. Fish was soggy, almost mushy, and salad had seen better days. Peas were good! I won’t be returning. Very disappointed.

Called in for a drink a couple of months ago and was initially impressed- well kept beer, nice atmosphere, super-friendly landlord. On the basis of this, we returned for food, which seemed to be in the hands of the landlady/cook, rather than the landlord we'd previously met. What a contrast- whereas he's the perfect host, she appeared to be grumpy to the point of rudeness- more suited to running a back street takeaway than a country pub. We overlooked this hoping for good food, but the extensive menu was a giveaway that although this may have been home cooked at some point, most items were just reheated on demand. Very average considering what so many pubs are offering. Looking at the other customers, it feels like the Wooden Spoon relies on unadventurous OAPs wanting comfort food for its business- more nursing home than country pub.

Lovely setting and very convenient for pre-theatre dining. We had lasagna, which came in a ramekin dish clearly microwaved as had burnt marks around the edge and floating in oily sauce. We had ordered an additional side salad and lemon cheesecake. Certainly was not worth the money. £28.50.

Four of us thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday roasts. Delicious meat, excellent gravy and so many vegetables. Generous helpings served by very personable staff. Puddings were terrific. Jon, our host is just the best landlord around. We all love coming to The Keepers, and thoroughly recommend it to everyone.

We called booking a table for later that evening; the manager/owner was extremely friendly and accommodated our need for pushchair space next to our table. This is the first time we had had an evening meal out with our sleeping baby, and we are conscious and worried that establishments (and their customers) don’t want to dine next to a baby of an evening...well this was allayed when we commented we had a baby “no problem” was the instinctive reply which made us feel at ease. Fish Friday…. Had a fantastic F&C from Caviar Plaice. Any reviews before September forget. Under new management and so much improved. Large portions and very reasonably priced. One large fish and standard chips was enough for two. Forget the bread and butter… Highly recommend.

Haddock, chips & peas were first class, not greasy, well cooked & excellent quality, proper home made chips! Cooked to order & were offered more chips & tea!

We booked for dinner here tonight Saturday 30th March, based on the food reviews and they did not disappoint. The food was amazing, my husband had the soup and burger both of which he said were the best he had ever tasted. I had the cod and again cooked to perfection. Thank you for a lovely dinner.
