Called in for a drink a couple of months ago and was initially impressed- well kept beer, nice atmosphere, super-friendly landlord. On the basis of this, we returned for food, which seemed to be in the hands of the landlady/cook, rather than the landlord we'd previously met. What a contrast- whereas he's the perfect host, she appeared to be grumpy to the point of rudeness- more suited to running a back street takeaway than a country pub. We overlooked this hoping for good food, but the extensive menu was a giveaway that although this may have been home cooked at some point, most items were just reheated on demand. Very average considering what so many pubs are offering. Looking at the other customers, it feels like the Wooden Spoon relies on unadventurous OAPs wanting comfort food for its business- more nursing home than country pub.

Visited wooden spoon on Easter Sunday with hubby & sister& brother in law. So very welcoming as soon as you enter. Great selection of ales which pleased the males, espically the reverend James. Great selection on the menu vast choices. Myself & hubby had liver bacon with mash absolutely scrummy. Others had beef and duck. 100% recommend this pub and will certainly frequent again. Staff were fantastic, espically landlady

Honestly baffled why this place has so many good reviews. The ‘chef’ must’ve taken a dislike to us when we went! The food was so bad we got a meal and a round of drinks knocked off our bill. There was dog hair in our side order of chips! When we asked about this the chef told the waiter to let us know the dog had got in to the kitchen!! I reported this place to the council due to poor hygiene.

Came to Downton for a mini break with friends and dogs. We were luck enough to have The Wooden Spoon opposite our air bnb. Ate there 3 days out of 4, and food was always fresh tasty and obviously Homemade. Really great staff and land lord/lady. We will be returning again hopefully soon. Dogs accepted and fussed over, the pub dog Boozer is a star attraction. Thank you The Wooden Spoon xxx

Four of us (plus dog) went here for lunch today and shared a couple of starters, deep fried brie and hot smoked trout, both delicious. Mains of Lamb Tagine, Chicken and Belly Pork were also fabulous and we loved our Cheesecake and cheese and biscuits for afters. All arrived promptly and with great service and very reasonable too. Four very happy customers - thank you so much. Second time we have been here, but pretty sure we will be back!!

We have been popping in for years, always made welcome and the quality of the food never disappoints. They have an extensive menu, which changes very little over the years, but there is so much to choose from that it didn’t matter. The car park has been improved and there is now a beer garden at the back. This village pub is worth a visit and the food is very good and plenty of it.

A real pub serving Proper pub food well prepared and tasty. No boil in a bag vegetables here. Prices are reasonable, compare well with other pubs/ restaurants cheaper than some near us in York. All staff were friendly as were other customers, certainly did not meet a rude landlady, a comment which nearly put us off visiting. What a beautiful garden! Give it a try for yourself

Really lovely staff, we hadn’t booked but were still welcomed and seated efficiently. We could see that they had a lot reserved so we were definitely lucky to get a table! Drinks and food all served promptly, I had steak and ale pie- by far the best pie I’ve had! One of those few places where I could order everything on the menu. Just such a lovely pub which is clearly well looked after by the owners and staff. Hope to visit again very soon!

I ordered the American Hot Pizza from The Wooden Spoon as a takeaway. It arrived piping hot, the base was cooked through, the heat of the jalapeños was spot on. It was loaded with cheese, with a good amount of chorizo and pepperoni.Well done to The Wooden Spoon I would recommend it.

Despite past experiences, decided to give the new pizza offering a try as a takeaway for outdoor eating with friends. Bases were soggy and undercooked, toppings were sparse and poor quality, none of us actually finished our pizza. Asked for chilli but got a sprinkling of chilli flakes instead, mozzarella was tasteless and almost non-existent.I’ll stick to the local pizza van or driving to Nole in Salisbury in future- both offer way better options that this.

As the previous reviewer says, the Wooden Spoon seems to be run by a landlady who thinks of her customers as an inconvenience. Have heard her rudeness to customers far too many times for it to be a one-off.What’s worse is the lack of Covid measures in place at the moment. Track and trace seems to be absent, staff are working without any extra handwashing or PPE and social distancing in the bar is non-existent.

I’ll give the Spoon 2 stars- one for Glen the landlord and one for the beer selection but apart from that, I’d happily never set foot in the place again. The food is slap bang average pub food from a menu that hasn’t been updated in 20 years, the decor is dated and Lou the landlady seems to genuinely dislike the human race. Why she’s working in the hospitality sector is a mystery to me.

We had walked around The Moot and at midday on a Bank Holiday Monday tried our luck at getting a table for the three of us. They were able to find a table for us inside - tables also avaiable in the garden which is set well bacl from the road but we decided against that it being wasp season.Staff were attentive and patient in answering question about the various meals on offer from the substantial and varied menu. We chose: lamb tagine, which came with rice and a smal side salad; grilled gammon and chips; and steak and ale pie which came with mashed potato and a side order of vegetables. All very enjoyable. The steak and ale pie was the highlight, not one of those round pies with top and bottom pie crust and little filling but obviously cut from a large pie with a top crust and lots of meat and rich gravy. The tagine was ok good quality meat a few apricots but not as fruity as expected. Gammon was good. Two of us had room for dessert and both chose sticky toffee pudding with vannilla ice cream. Very ligh sponge and tasty sticky toffee topping.A good lunch.

A lovely warm welcome as we took our seats, sadly it was just before the time it was announced that places were to close due to Covid-19. The lady informed us they had already had several cancellations which was a real shame as these bookings could have been honoured. An extensive menu, even a separate one for vegetarians with 5/6 options which is rare. I decided against the 5 bean chilli when it was described as ''medium'' and went for the pasta dish.Very nicely presented but the cannelloni were drowning in the tomato sauce, though it was lovely. A good combination of flavours. While we were waiting we glanced at other dishes available and were surprized that few if any came with fresh vegetables. Even the shepherds pie came with salad. Very odd to us.However, the dishes were nicely presented, service was with a smile despite the sad news and it was all very reasonably priced.I would happily return

Nice owners, friendly. The menu looked extensive which excited us. But in reality the food wasn't as special as we had anticipated. Oxtail Stew (a favourite) was ok but the accompanying new potatoes were cold in the middle ( I suspect re-heated in a microwave) Fish and chips again only ok - fish was the best part, chips were not partcularly great - slightly small and not chunky and not really crisp ....not many either! I think could do much better - can't honestly recomend here which is a pity as it has potential with a bit more care. Maybe less is more!

Met by a very unwelcoming woman who frankly seemed annoyed we had even stepped into the pub. Had to wait for over an hour for food, even though locals seemed to have their food provided far quicker. Goat curry, fishcakes and chIcken were good, however steak and ale pie was past it's best, dry and tasteless. We had a dog with us that was well behaved throughout the meal, he started to bark as we were leaving and we were met with rude comments from the kitchen as we departed. This pub provided me with the worse Sunday lunch ever. Limp lumpy roast potatoes cooked in a cheap oil that were clearly reheated, a soggy and burnt Yorkshire pudding, between my partner and I we had 3 broccoli florets, 8 French beans and a table spoon of mashed swede. Prior to this we had starters which were ridiculously small, I am a small women that doesn’t eat much but to have two crab cakes literally this size of a 2 pence piece was really unacceptable. We should of known when we heard to older women complaining about their wait we should of just left. The pub wasn’t overly welcoming, we spent at least 10 minutes waiting to be seated albeit stood at the empty bar waiting for someone to come out (we had reserved a table but no sign out). I wish we had complained there and then but I didn’t want to make a fuss in front of my in-laws. If my post saves another family wasting their money and time it will be a good thing. I tried the Lamb Tagine this time and the lamb was cooked to perfection, melting-in-the-mouth tender with a wonderful Moroccan flavour of spices and apricots. My fiancé had the Steak and Ale pie - omg - to die for. So delicious, the ale had seeped through to the beef in the hours of cooking and he said every mouthful was a gastronomical experience of heaven. He cooks himself, so that's high praise indeed. Still as good as I remember (last time I was here must have 5+ years ago). I can fully understand why the Wooden Spoon continues to get so many good reviews. The food was excellent - and such a wide choice. I had Mushroom, Stilton and Brocolli crepes and they were absolutely scrummy, And everyone else in our group thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Also the prices were very reasonable; other than one member of our group who opted for steak which was understandably a bit more expensive, our main courses were all around £10 - really good value. This is a lovely place to eat. We all really enjoyed our meals. We had a steak pie, chicken and bacon salad and fish. They were lovely. We also had apple and blackberry pie, treacle tart and ice cream. Sorry I forgot pictures

Ate here while on a weekend trip to New forest. The food is amazing as is the service, all at a reasonable price. Went on a Sunday evening so fairly quiet, but still a nice atmosphere. Ample parking at rear.

We stopped in for a quick bite while visiting Downton and was totally impressed with the menu items listed at this little pub. All Home made with locally sourced farm to table foods! Such a refreshing treat to have a homemade stew after travelling all Day from London. This local pub is hopping with locals and visitors and serving up some fine wine, food and warm hospitality. Great choice for a savoury meal in the village of Downton!

Occasionally you find a real gem and this place is one of them. We stayed in Downton for a couple of nights and found reviews for The Wooden Spoon so had to try it and was not disappointed. I had the lasagne which was cooked to perfection, very tasty and you could tell it was slow cooked (like it should be)The staff were very friendly and apologised for our 2 minute wait at the bar (you don't get any apologies in London for waiting and the bar!)Definitely recommend this place

Staying locally, we saw good reviews on trip advisor, so came here for lunch. It's a small 'blackboard' pub with a good choice of dishes, and just a bit different from the average. Four adults and one child had lunch plus drinks, and the bill came to £80, very reasonable. It was mid-week and very quiet, and the barman seemed to be doing the cooking as well, but we didn't have to wait long. The food was delicious, especially the chicken with mushrooms in a creamy sauce. One of our group chose it, and the rest of us were quite envious when it arrived! But all the food was excellent! We would have liked to come back again but time didn't allow.

We stopped off here for lunch. We both had steak and ale pie on mash with additional fresh vegetables and a couple of pints of Ringwood ale.The pie was excellent, full of decent quality meat and well flavoured. Also, the pastry was real...not one of those fluffy puff pastry things just plonked on top! The veg selection was also good and not overcooked. We will definitely call in again whenever we're passing at meal time!

We were on our way back from the New Forest to Devon and, as we were all a little hungry, we popped in here. It was Sunday, so we all chose the roast dinner (pork for me and beef for the others). We didn't have to wait too long and were presented with a lovely plate of pork/beef, roast potatoes and wonderful gravy - vegetables were served on a separate dish (a little disappointed with the veg as the cauli was a little too crunchy and the broccoli a little overdone, but the swede/carrot mash, cabbage and runner beans were delicious). Very clean, good service and friendly staff. From the menus, it looked like they had a variety of choices - would visit again if in the area. Would recommend.

We were based in Downton for the weekend and our host recommended the wooden spoon. We were not disappointed ! The food was absolutely lovely, the sort of home cooked/comfort food everyone likes to eat. The host was very nice and the waitress fantastic.

We were recommended this place to eat & although we only live a few miles away we had never been before. However after our first visit we will certainly be returning. The food was great, an amazing selection of over 40 different dishes to suit all tastes & good veggie selection included. 4 of us all had different meals & each one was superb, also very clean & friendly staff. All food is freshly cooked so don't be in a rush as it's well worth the wait & a nice change from the places that just microwave meals, excellent prices too, you will not be disappointed. Only down side is small car park so you may need to find a space on the street at busy times.

Stumbled upon this local pub when I couldn't be bothered to cook one night. Fantastic find. So many choices I could happily have ordered. Sign states all food is freshly, home-cooked and they don't do fast food which suits us fine. Delicious proper pub grub and the staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Surprisingly busy for a Thursday night and feel a booking is often needed. Loved the place and will be back soon. A really tasty meal. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Went here at lunchtime for Father's Day and.sat in the pretty garden at the back of the pub in the shade on a very hot day. The food was all homecooked and good. The fish pie wasn't too salty with a good flavour. My only complaint would be the bread roll that came with it as it was white and doughy. A chunk of rustic sourdough or similar would have been better. The liver and mash was well cooked and tender. We enjoyed the quiet garden and the staff were pleasant.

Very expensive for what you get. Poor music choice. Generally unhelpful service. We went to the Horse and Groom in Westbury the next day and couldn’t have a table. Duke, get real and wake up to reality, your livelihood relies on people…

Arrived expecting to find a pub and found it had changed hands two weeks earlier and reopened as an Indian restaurant - we were obviously among the very first customers! We were given a warm welcome, the food was absolutely excellent and the service attentive. I would highly recommend the Goan fish curry, mild and deliciously seasoned.
