We went for a Sunday lunch. It's a sharing board, apparently for people with small appetites. I went specifically because i am gluten free and the menu says on the beef and Yorkshire pudding option (gf option available). The gf option is without Yorkshire pudding! Quite disappointing. The portion sizes of the meat is miniscule. Two small slices of beef, about the size of a slice of fray bentos corned beef shape. Qtr of chicken, just a leg piece. For £22! I also had the prawn starter which was 3 prawns in a bowl of salad. My son wanted pigs in blankets which was £7 for three small sausages in bacon! We all came away hungry. The Yorkshire pudding was similar to the size you get in a packet in Tesco. The only people who could possibly rave about the food here are those unable to boil an egg. The owner/manager seems to think he is funny, he isn't. His service is an acquired taste, one of which we had no desire to acquire.

A great place for a family meal. Great staff, great service, and good food. The only downside for me was that the conservatory we were in, with terrific views, was extremely cold. This wasn't helped when staff kept leaving a door open. Otherwise, it's 9a top rating. I will visit again, but in summer!

Location is beautiful especially during the summer however- we have just had a roast and it was not great! Had a call 45 mins before our booking time (suppose to be 4:15pm) to ask if we were having a roast. They said roast finishes at 4pm yet their menu online and the menu handed to us when we arrived said 8pm. We rushed to get there. A pretty cold day and was sat in the conservatory- no heating on and pretty bleak decor, toilets not great. Roast Dinner came out hot but tasteless, flat and small Yorkshire pudding that cost £2.50!!!! Extra pigs in blankets £6.50 for 5 tiny pieces. Potatoes hard and not crispy, little meat! I found 3 hairs in my dinner and gravy was like water. Service was quick but that’s because we were the only ones in there eating (I believe this was why they said the roast finished at 4pm) In and out within 1 hr! £81 bill later. 4 cokes at £19 and got handed a receipt with a £7.10 service tip!!! Paid and left and won’t return for food unfortunately.

We recently visited The Rising Sun in Lacock to celebrate my mother’s birthday, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. Our group of 14 was seated in the conservatory, which offered stunning views of the valley, making the meal even more special. I opted for the 9oz sirloin steak, cooked to perfection, and paired with hand-cut chips, garlic bread, and a rich peppercorn butter. The main was hearty and delicious. For dessert, I had a syrup sponge, which came with both custard and a scoop of Lacock vanilla ice cream, making it a delightful treat. The mix of warm syrupy sponge and creamy ice cream was divine. To finish, a well-brewed latte provided the perfect end to the meal. The service was impeccable. Despite our large party, the staff were attentive, friendly, and made our visit feel seamless. The setting of the conservatory, with its beautiful view, added a peaceful and elegant touch to the event. All in all, it was an outstanding experience, and I would highly recommend The Rising Sun for anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion. The combination of superb food, stunning surroundings, and excellent service made my mother’s birthday meal truly memorable.

Just visited the rising sun for a roast, I must say we were very unhappy with the food. All the items apart from the gravy were cold. We didn’t want to make a fuss during our stay as the service was great but the food wasn’t. The starter I had lamb kofte was really unpleasant also, just two hard balls of “kofte” that I could barely cut into. The setting of the place is lovely and the staff were great, but unfortunately the food was really unsatisfactory.

The food is wonderful and well priced considering the chef’s culinary expertise. We’ve eaten here four times now and each meal has been delicious. Nothing wrong with the location or with the staff. However, I wanted a late lunch so opted for the rocket, watercress and parmesan salad. I see the online sample menu lists this at £3.95 - in reality, try £7.95. As the uploaded photo indicates, there was zero watercress and, frankly, zero of merit here. The truffle chips were also pricier than the dates online menu. £7 or £8 for a novelty mini chip fryer with not a whiff of truffle. I can see a lot of positive comments regarding the food here, it's a shame I'm not able to add to them. I wouldn't have written a review, if I hadn't felt so distinctly ripped off.

Went for evening meal with the wife. After writing a negative review on FB they decided to block me rather than respond like most normal adults would. Poor choice of starters and the bbq chicken starter was mush and more like cat food. The most expensive thing on the menu was the steak which we both looked forward to. It was very fatty and came with a peppercorn sauce made from butter. The steak and chips were overpowered by the fat and grease from the butter. Very disappointing and quite frankly gross experience. Over £130 and was there for around an hour. They offered a complimentary desert but by that time had lost our appetite. Needles to say, won’t be rushing back

First of all, we can't knock the beautiful scenery of views this place has. The food overall was tasty, no concern here. However, value for money? Not really. Close to £14 for cheese on toast? (Welsh rarebit) £8 or so for 4 or 5 small pieces of belly pork bites. Similar price for a small terrine starter. Kids past and garlic bread reasonably priced and portioned. Our drinks (coke, diet coke, lemonade) very flat. The other gripe was the gentleman who served us at the bar. Had blonde long hair. Possibly the manager. Late 40s perhaps. We have never felt so rushed when ordering. Every item we ordered followed with a hurried "is that it?". Two rarebits please. Ok is that it? No. Kids pasta. Ok that's all then? No! The terrine Ok that's all? No.. Belly bites. NOW that's everything. On to the drinks. Two cokes. Ok that's everything? No!!!. and so on. Stop rushing us. It was not busy. Nobody queuing.

Truly awful experience, which we hate to leave such a negative review. We'll start with the Pros: - lovely views - Staff seemed pleasant Cons: - £2.50 for a child's squash. Water and cordial. Which tasted awful BTW - Nowhere near enough food served for the extremely high priced Sunday lunch. - Regardless if you order 2 separate Sunday lunches, it'll come on a sharing board. with 1 carrot and 1 parsnip. - Vegetarian/Vegan option is ''Nut Road'' but it's not a nut roast. It's mushed up rice/risotto. - The mixed veg is brought up in a cheese sauce that isn't great. We paid over £95 for 2 Sunday adult roasts, 2 children roasts, and 2 children squashes. My wife and I had tap waters!. We don't mind paying for food thats high priced, but the quality and the amount of food has to match. The whole sharing board situation, is an AWFUL business. Very confusing and should be rethought immediately if the business wants to stay afloat. We live local and can honestly say we sadly won't be coming here again.

We had one course each at £16.50 but the bill added on 3 x 1 course which was £11. So we were expected to pay for 2 courses. When we asked the explanation made no sense. On speaking to the manager and the explanation basically saying they charge that but don’t force people to have 2 courses, and of course they could take it off! And he did. And the service charge as I really didn’t feel generous enough to pay that after all that! The bill came right down, we paid and left. And we definitely won’t go back or recommend it. Booked a table for two and requested the conservatory. Arrived a little early but told we would be in the bar area or 'lodge' because of the dog ........ we don't have a dog! We asked to be moved quite quickly because we were both cold (sitting just in front of the door with the outer door being open more often than not). We were moved to the lodge which was still chilly but with overhead heaters and blankets. The food was good albeit not very hot - serving on a wooden platter probably didn't help with that. The roast potatoes looked good but not as crispy as we prefer. Yorkshire puddings were large but certainly not worth the £2.50 required for any additional. Vegetables were good but the beef was the star of the meal - only two slices, but beautifully cooked and very tasty. Horseradish tasted homemade and certainly hit the spot. Dessert was also good. Couldn't fault the service but in future would certainly only visit on warmer days unless they could assure me I would be sitting somewhere warm.

New Years Eve - disappointing would be an understatement. £59 per head got you a 3 course meal followed by cheese board and glass of champagne. That was the offer - not what was delivered. Starting with the 3 course meal. Quite a choice on the menu which was pleasing to see. Starters, Main and Dessert were pretty fair but nothing special. Regrettably some of our party were unable to attend due to Covid so decided to enjoy the meal but not stay on till midnight. When asking about those who couldn't attend, no refund (that's fair enough as food ordered in), so meals were to be plated so could be taken home and re-heated. Instead some items were put in foil and popped in a plastic veg tray. Asked about the cheeseboard and champagne. Told these were "complimentary to encourage people to stay until after midnight". That wasn't what it said when booking. £59 a head? Expected to pay more for New Year's Eve but the whole evening was very disappointing and certainly not what was expected. Will we return? No. We live local but won't return. Tried to support local hospitality but left feeling somewhat ripped off, lied to and failing to live up to the offer. I hate to say avoid a hospitality venue as it is tough out there but if you treat customers on the way we were treated then the only feedback that can be offered is to AVOID. Such a shame as location is fantastic.

It’s okay, the pods have seen better days. The roast looks amazing but was very tasteless. The veg is mixed up in a bowl and all slushy. Because the food is on wooden boards you can’t go overboard with the gravy. Generally quite expensive for what you get and to top it off it’s a card only place. I will continue to support local businesses who need the cash.

Don't bother! What a complete let-down. My wife has just been this evening in a small group and had an awful experience from every perspective. There was nothing enjoyable apart from the company she went went with. The host was clearly wanting to go home. It was overpriced for what it was. He clearly did not want us to be there. He turned off the lights, cleared the table before everyone had finished. Turned off the music and said he was closing - and it was only 9.30. Food was ok but nothing special. She would have expected more. The overall experience was a bad one. The moment we had finished the food he did not want us there any more. We are local, but will never go again, and as her husband I have always thought what a nice place it looked. What a contrast to the recent review I gave to the pub at Winsley where we had a fantastic meal, and also our very own pub in Yatton Keynell which is always totally reliable in quality and atmosphere. What a waste of a pub in such a wonderful location to have such an unwelcoming host. The vast majority of my reviews are five star positive, so what a disappointing contrast this is - and it's on our doorstep 😒

We popped in for lunch as it was on our route home, and we’d not been here for over a year. We enjoyed our lunch, from a good lunchtime menu, and the local beer went down a dream. Great, friendly service which always makes the atmosphere good. If you want a meal with a view then you must try the Rising Sun. Would thoroughly recommend.

The menu was a bit limited, nice people, but the food was not to my liking the steak was £ 30, but it was quite over salted very expensive deserts I should really have mentioned about my steak at the time but was with family and friends and did not want to cause a fuss

Two superb experiences. We’re away for a week (two adults, six year old and our dog Lady) - we escaped from dining in our AirBNB accommodation and enjoyed two fabulous experiences at The Rising Sun. Neil - the perfect hospitality host (with an outstanding hospitality CV) complimented by; dog friendly, stunning kids menu, outstanding local produce, exceptional food & drinks and fabulous country pub vibes. Highly appreciated. Thank you Neil - all the best in your recovery post opening at the start of Covid - you deserve an abundance of success. Ian Tillett - over 38 years of hospitality experience.

The building was cold and draughty, not helped by two doors being left open, although it was a busy time, everything seemed very rushed in terms of service and the manager seemed abrupt at times. The food itself was most disappointing, nothing was hot, probably not helped by being served on a wooden board - we won’t make that mistake again, the quality of the beef was good but the vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and gravy were very poor. The potatoes were hard and tasted unpleasant, they had definitely been reheated, possibly over-reheated and then let get cold again. The parsnips and carrots also had that reheated taste and texture. The medley of veg - red cabbage, kale and a broccoli gratin were all served in a bowl together, which was just mushy and lukewarm. Cold plates didn’t help matters either. There are several better places to visit locally for Sunday lunch and a return visit isn’t on the cards. The manager walked past us several times and we think he avoided asking us if everything was ok, because he knew what the answer would be. All the basics were just wrong. Such a shame, as it could be so much better. Felt particularly disappointed after spending £90 on what was should have been an enjoyable family treat.

(bear with me) Samuel Pepys described the pub as "the heart of England". This pub lives up to that idea. Unfortunately most pubs desecrate this sentiment and spit on the magical idea of a pub. Unfriendly, zero service, overly done tasteless modern and grotty interior, unclean, unauthentic, serving thawed matter bought in from a supplier that doesn't even deserve the title of "food". Outdated menus with no consideration that food has changed in the last 60 years. If you don't want meat, unlucky, every dish has it and you had better eat at home. ... Then you find the gems like this, that honour and exceed the picture of the quintessential pub that you have in your head, and suprise you by even exceeding it in parts. Set in ancient fairytale countryside, views for 10 miles from the side of a great hill, a rustic and perfectly imperfect storied inn, it feels homely as you are warmed as much by the smiley demeanour of the people as you are by the open fire. Presented a smooth coffee, and a generously sized roast that fills the stomach and bolsters the soul. Affording you dietary options that fit the current-day demand for alternatives to animal derived dishes. I had to write this because I want to emphasise how places like this that reinvigorate your belief in a good old pub, bucking the trend of eternally disappointing, chain pubs. It is so saddening to see the state of public houses until I find places like this that could not be more opposite, and give you hope for the future of pubs. They live up to expectations you have from rose-tinted memories of good memories in good pubs. They wow you and make the effort and get so much right. It is rare it is to find these but I'm so glad when I do. They happily accommodate those who choose not to eat animal products with two vegan main options on a sunday. The roast was beautiful, perfectly roasted carrots, potatoes and parsnips. Sweet and tart red cabbage, and a nut roast that was homemade with heart, it didn't go unnoticed, incredible - I could liken the flavour it to pork even, shockingly tasty, so appreciated. Blondie dessert was wonderful, for sure the best vegan dessert I've had in a pub. Soft cookie-like blondie, chocolate kind-of-ganache, and non-dairy ice cream with candied orange pieces on top, and yet not too sweet, seriously mind-blowing. Waitress was so kind and smiley and friendly, thoughtfully tried hard to encourage us in to sit by the fire, out of the cold, which we eventually did. Greeted as we entered by wooden ceilings and beams, sturdy old flagstones underfoot, cosy atmosphere. Can't wait to return, especially to sit outside and enjoy the view over the rolling hills below and perhaps in winter in one of the bubbles with a heater inside, would be wonderful.

We stayed with a couple of Motorhome’s by prior arrangement. Lovely sunset and deck. Then came Into eat. Pub food done well. Drank loads of a good local beer and a few bottles of wines. Not overly expensive. Owner has engaging and Interesting. Clearly working very hard to make something of the business. We will return. Not only for the view but because people trying hard and working hard in local pubs need support.

Upon our arrival, we were shown to our table and seated. The drinks orders were taken quickly but they took at least 20 minutes to come. We ordered a roast sharing board. We had been at our table for over an hour before the first course came out - the staff didn't apologise or seem interested. When our food finally arrived, we asked for some salt and were given sachets of salt that was congealed in the packet. Yet, another table had been given salt and pepper grinders (they also had all their courses before us and arrived after us). We didn't get asked about whether we wanted anymore drinks when our glasses were empty so we ended up having to go to the bar as it was quicker. We decided to order desert and after saying yes to being able to provide Vanilla Icecream with the Millionaires shortbread, it arrived without - they didn't tell us though until we asked... Overall the Roast Dinner was good - The puddings were not good. One of the urinals in the mens toilet was filled up with urine and overflowing onto the floor. But, they put a wet floor sign underneath it, so that's fine?

Absolutely furious. A lovely pub now spoilt by 'card only payments' and as I'm awaiting a new card I can't eat here. Will not be coming again.

Beautiful location with stunning views of Wiltshire. There are pods you can dine in outside with heaters if it gets chilly. We went here for Sunday lunch. The staff were waiting for us at the door and greeted us by our names. I was really touched by that. The staff were very professional and attentive. The food was very good. I really liked that they served it all on a wooden board so you could help yourself. There is a good sized carpark and it’s dog friendly. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area and visiting beautiful Lacock.
