The best restaurants serving British food in Torridge South West

We popped into this pub as searching for a house in the area. The pub is closed at lunch times but as there were cars in the car park, we thought perhaps it was open. It turned out there was a private function. Despite the fact we could not have food, I'm leaving such a high review as the landlord fell over backwards too make us feel so welcome, he even offered us a cup of tea, despite having a very large party to cater for. What a lovely man! The food smelt delicious and inside the pub was lovely and welcoming. Definitely will be coming back one day.

Average. Busy place, probably the busiest in Bideford. Food plentiful but too seasoned (salt) and won't be going again.

Sunday lunch with friends & their dog. 3 of us vegetarian meals & one meat eater. Service & friendliness was second to none. Good selection of interesting veggie options which is unusual for a pub. Plenty of varied vegetables. Well cooked & delicious.

Beautiful atmosphere, lovely staff and delicious food! Would definitely recommend, especially the halloumi fries!

Sunday roast was amazing ! It was my first but definitely won’t be my last ! Gem of a place Landlord and landlady are lovely and friendly Prices are incredible

The pub has got a great location right on the waters edge, we have a lovely table seat upstairs which had great views over the estuary. The food was well presented and was superb, I highly recommend a visit.

We found blackwells by accident climbing those steps up from the high street at the start of our week long holiday in the area. Very tasty pastry and fillings. We sampled others in neighbouring towns but none matched yours. Years later transiting back from Newquay on the slow road to detour to you establishment. Cannot recommend you enough to future clientele it will be worth every single bite.

Excellent food, friendly and accommodating staff. Amazing selection of desserts but the Choux ring wins every time.❤️

Went to the thatch one lunchtime, ordered fish and chips and scampi and chips. We were both hungry but the chips were overdone not triple cooked just nearly burnt, I ate mine as they were not quite inedible but the wife couldn’t. The very friendly lady servicing us asked if everything was ok, and being as she asked the question I told her, albeit she could have seen for her self. We were offered free drinks or a free sweet, wife declined but I had a pint. An apology was offered once again when we paid, which I felt was genuine. The chef in my opinion should not have sent our meals out like that, but he did, Anyway customer service prevailed and the waitress saved the day….

We had an excellent meal at the Hoops Inn last evening. The food was very good. My pan fried scallops with black pudding and pea purée was absolutely delicious. As were the other starters. Mains were also excellent, good food and generous portions. Excellent value for money. Also a special shout-out for the young lady who took care of us throughout the evening as well as serving everyone else and managing the bar at the same time. Great service with a smile. An excellent meal which all four of use thoroughly enjoyed.

Although the fish was cooked well, the portion of cod I received was the smallest I’ve ever seen at a fish and chip shop. For the price, it was incredibly disappointing to be served such a small piece. When I mentioned this, I was told it was bigger than it looked and that it was the standard portion size. To be clear, it wasn’t, and if it truly is the standard size, then it seems there’s been a change in portion policy since the new ownership took over.

It was deserted at half four and we were the only ones in! Friendly, helpful staff and good coffees. Good for relaxing whilst shopping

What a treat ! Warm welcoming and comfortable. Excellent service , attentive and friendly . Now for the food ! Absolutely lovely . We had the set Sunday lunch and there was plenty of it and the flavour or the meat was to die for . Fresh local vegetables cooked to perfection and the Yorkshire puddings fluffy and large . A really nice starter a jug of soup each and super bread nibbles and a chicken liver parfait . I was most impressed at how well I was looked after as I have an allergy to alcohol. Nothing was too much trouble and I had my own soup as the other had alcohol in , it was tasty and sublime . As I couldn’t eat the parfait either they brought me a delicious baked Camembert instead . The main course came in a skillet , to help yourself. Plenty of delicious meat and vegetables . The sweet was a sticky toffee pudding and a lovely creamy rice pudding , better than Mother used to make ! Would I return ? Absolutely and I can’t wait !

Nice pub with good food, a pool table, darts board and a decent outside area. Some parking in site but plenty surrounding.
