Absolutely delicious lunch in beautiful surroundings. The cheese scone and chutney was so nice and my husband’s Tuna toasted sandwich was lovely, it was accompanied with a very tasty coleslaw and salad, followed by scone jam and cream. Really good value and everything tasted so fresh. My husband said it was the best scone he had tried and the largest!

We stumbled across this place during a brief visit to Barnstaple and boy were we pleased we did. We had two delicious sandwiches; my egg mayonnaise was a tour de force and my partner's bacon brie and cranberry toasted was a delight. The staff were extremely helpful and pleasant and the building itself is a beautiful old but modernised edifice. One can also sit out by the river if one so wishes.

Only popped in for a cuppa but everything was superb. Sit in or out, there's plenty of space. Fabulous loose leaf teas, utterly blissful scones with lashings of cream and just amazing cakes. The staff are friendly but discreet and the building is stunning with it's original features, high ceilings and chandaliers.Well done and thank you to all concerned.

We stopped here while visiting Barnstaple. It’s sat on the river in a beautiful building and has plenty of outside seating ( although could do with some umbrellas as it was too hot) I had a cream tea and the scone was delicious and fluffy but all food ordered was delicious. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and would recommend a visit.

told we could share afternoon tea as it was ample size, when it came out - there was nowhere near enough for everyone. They provided one large teapot but only 1 cup. Told one afternoon tea platter serves 4 people (definitely doesn’t) and we couldn’t get extra cups?? When we spoke to both owners they were aggressive non apologetic and made no effort to help. Afternoon tea consisted of cheap ham sandwiches, tuna or egg mayo, Two scones (serves 4) 2 small portion of brownie (serves 4) and a couple of macaroons. I deeply regret choosing this venue for the baby shower - had we gone anywhere else we would have paid the same amount and would have had the amount of food that this particular venue believes serves 4 not the regular two. Out of shear desperation and embarrassment I asked to pay additional money to cover extra food so that my friends and family didn’t leave too hungry. I could never recommend this business now given the circumstances and would most certainly never return. This should have been a real opportunity for them to shine - instead I feel that no one will return here!

Sadly, after hearing great things, my lunch today was very average. I ordered a simple scrambled egg on granary toast - nearly 15 minutes later it arrived - the scrambled eggs were very very ‘wet’ in a puddle in the middle of the plate & stone cold. The four half-slices of toast were fanned about the sloppy pile and soggy where soaking up the liquidity - buttered less than 60% too. The toast was also cold.

Situated on the strand beside the river in Barnstaple, this cafe offers a great range of simple food beautifully prepared to order. Service is prompt even when the cafe is busy; our sandwiches were made to order and augmented with freshly prepared, dressed salad including “home made ” coleslaw. A little upselling offered up a deliciously hot pot of fries. Great quality coffee with a bit of oomph! Leaf teas full of flavour.

Second time visiting and still great! The food is great quality. Cafe is spacious and staff are very welcoming. The menu offers a good range and specials board always has something great on it. We went for fishmonger sandwiches which were more like fish goujons, clearly they were home made! It was great. Chunky bread and fresh salad. High chairs available for younger kids and a small play area. If you want something a bit nicer for lunch than the usual stuff on offer, I would highly recommend this place, especially the fish dishes

This is the first time I had been into this iconic building in Barnstaple since I moved to the area over 39 years ago. My wife and I decided to have lunch here. We both chose the Fish Chowder with a warm bread roll. The chowder was made up with Cod, Haddock and Salmon and was absolutely full of fish. We each had a glass of wine to accompany the dish. Service is excellent, prices reasonable and the building itself full of old photographs of Barnstaple in olden days. Well recommended.

WOW, we had the most amazing Sunday lunch. Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing ball, peas, carrots, French beans, roast parsnips, cabbage, cauliflower cheese & not forgetting the amazing crispy roast potatoes and lashings of thick gravy. The meat, Yorkshire pudding & stuffing came on the plate, followed by a dish of 8 roasters and another dish with the 6 vegetables in & a big jug of gravy. I dont think anyone would be able to eat everything. The servings are huge. Everything is freshly cooked, served piping hot, it was just amazing. We ate as much as we could, but there was easily enough for another 3 or 4 servings. The landlord suggested taking it home with us, but we didn't. After a rest, we ordered apple crumble & custard. Again, the portion was huge. We could have shared 1, and it would have been enough. It's a shame we don't live here because we would be regulars.
