The Royal George in Torridge

The pub has got a great location right on the waters edge, we have a lovely table seat upstairs which had great views over the estuary. The food was well presented and was superb, I highly recommend a visit.

Lovely service, the waitress was very friendly, although the food was a complete let down. I had a ‘Prawn and Fish Thai Curry’, though the fish was extremely dry and the curry tasted of nothing. The sauce itself was more just oil with an attempt to give it taste by overloading red chillies - top tip, that makes spice, not taste. £20 for a tasteless meal, leaving me with a bad stomach, when I could have purchased a £5 microwave pot of thai green curry from a supermarket that would have by far outmatched it. From the premium price, it was disappointing to see mismatched water glasses from Ikea, some of which coloured when most where transparent, cheap cutlery where the forks were bent, and very cheap serviettes. Certainly would not visit again.

Booked for Sunday lunch as was staying in the local area with friends. Wow what a little gem. The food was outstanding. The service was second to none. We had a Seaview veiw over looking the sea. The Sunday roast was superb, big portions and super tasty. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Thoroughly recommend.

Just back from 3 nights away and staying at the Royal George. A really lovely small hotel that has been beautifully refurbished. The dinner was excellent and the team working there are delightful. Definitely 5 stars from us.

Should have noticed the signs outside (Family friendly, dog friendly.) Meier not as on website, in fact very little choice. Had a cheeseburger as not much else and paid £19.95 for a weatherspoon meal. It was 7:30 at night but there was a family with a crying baby and a toddler running around. I’ve brought up a family myself but don’t think it’s appropriate for an evening meal which is better if adults only. There were 2 dogs in the room one of which was had its paws on the table and was being fed from the owner’s fork…how grim. Won’t return.

Fantastic food, service was excellent will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family. The venison was cooked to perfection and the hake dish was superb.

We had lunch two days running at The Royal George while staying in Appledore for New Year. We had a window seat overlooking the estuary which was lovely. Food was excellent. The dishes were well presented - Beetroot Borani was unusual and very tasty as was the Rare Roast Exmoor Rump Beef Salad. Pan Roasted Venison Haunch was cooked to perfection, I didn't really need the mini venison cottage pie but managed to force it down 🤭 - very tasty too. No room for dessert but had Festive Espresso Martinis - a sprinkle of cinnamon - it was NY's Eve after all! Particular shout out to Lucy - the best server we've ever had (we don't know her!), very observant and attentive without being obtrusive. Would recommend.

My wife and i had a great relaxed lunch here, made all the better by our waitress Lucy. She was attentive. But not intrusive. She came and enquired if i wanted another beer when i had finished my first. She brought over a 'doggy bag' for the other half of my Christmas club sandwich. I didn't have to ask. Thank you, Lucy. Ask for Lucy when you come here. And please tip well. There are few great waitresses like her around.

Such a lovely bar and restaurant in the most wonderful setting at Appledore. Friendly and helpful staff, very dog friendly and food which is easily comparible with the best restaurants in London. We enjoyed a breakfast and dinner and would highly recommend both meals. Definitely book so you know you have a table. Thanks to all the staff for the warmth of their welcome and excellent food.

Wonderful Christmas lunch and excellent service.

Me and my wife had a lovely couple of nights at The Royal George. We stayed in the triple room, it was very pleasant. The coffee machine in the room wasn't working but other then that it was very nice. Breakfast was brilliant both mornings, we also tried the evening menu. The only criticism would be in my opinion it was abit expensive. But it really good quility and the views from the restaurant are stunning. All in all, a brilliant stay and we will definitely be returning in the future!

We had a great afternoon celebrating with friends. This is our fourth year visiting the area and wished we come across sooner! An absolute gem! We were so impressed with the food and we are huge foodie fans! Delicious! We had a great time. The food was well cooked and beautifully presented. The cod was chunky and fell apart perfectly and I even enjoyed the mussels and beautiful sauce. The duck too was the perfect colour and delicious. Lovely soft pork bites with delicious chutney. Desserts too up to high standard and the chocolate delice was especially enjoyed. The waitress was very , efficient, attentive and friendly. It may be a little on the expensive side but definitely value for money for surroundings, service and food. We also enjoyed the background music which I can rarely say but it was not intrusive and from our era. Will definitely return when next in the area and possibly try the Sunday lunch.

Limited menu and quite expensive. If you’re not a massive fish / seafood lover, you may struggle to find something you enjoy. However, the food was delicious and portion sizes were decent. Large drinks menu to choose from and service was friendly and quick! Would love to see a wider range of food on offer but otherwise it was a lovely experience with great views!

Initial welcome from the male receptionist was cold, no “Good Evening “ or any eye contact. Reception area very messy/untidy. Despite the above, the table service was quick and very friendly and the mussels (to start) and the steak were delicious!!

Came for Sunday lunch which was excellent value at £25 for 2 courses. The roast dinners were absolutely incredible, some of the best we have had. The desserts were also excellent. Our waitress was lovely and gave brilliant service. We can’t wait to go back! One thing to note is parking - definitely park slightly further and walk rather than attempting the very narrow road!

I just want to say a huge thank you to all the staff involved in my mums 60th birthday meal. Absolute perfection on ensuring everything ran smoothly. Catering for 10 of us. They made sure we got rested ahead in advance by a week. Great idea. Ensuring nothing was wrong on the day. We had the conservatory area, quiet and out of the way with breath taking sea views. My mum was blown away and so overwhelmed. You really did do a great job all of you. The food - too quality! Can’t fault anything. Presentation was fantastic and all the food arrived together. All dishes were superb tasting. Price - 10 of us with most of us having 3 courses and alcohol drinks, £300. Absolute bargain for a restaurant of this quality! My mum also stayed the night at the Royal George Hotel. Sea views room. She loved every minute of it. The room was stunning by. I visit this area regularly as my mum lives here. I will certainly be returning on every visit :) Team - you should all be very proud to f yourselves. You do a fantastic job. This is a must visit restaurant!

Places like this are hard to come by now days… quality, local produce, generous portions to reflect cost, with views like a postcard.. Particular acknowledgment of the exceptional staff— nothing was too much trouble; Polite, attentive and warm reception across the whole team. Refreshingly NO (assumed) TIP ADDED to our bill, which only endorsed their clearly deep, old school understanding of service further; even expressing authentic gratitude that we wanted to add a tip! Special thank you to our delightful server Lucy, artistic manager Helen and statuesque Ellen, who faithfully obliged us any additions or requests. Thank you so much for such a special Sunday lunch! Could not fault our experience.

Beautiful location, very welcoming and pleasant staff. Food was very good. The burgers are epic, the market fish options were very good and well cooked. A large party and we all enjoyed very much. Check out parking options before you get there, which we hadn’t planned for, but there are car parks nearby. A lovely end to our wet week away in Devon, even the sun came out. Definitely recommend.

We had lunch here and loved it. Great service and decor, lovely view from the upstairs dining room. And superb food. It wasn't cheap, but the fish and chips was possibly the best I've ever had - lovely fresh fish, perfectly cooked, excellent crunchy batter and superb chunky but light and crisp chips. I couldn't fault it in any way. My companions also loved their meals.

Had lunch with friends. Fish and chips overdone so the batter was very dark and greasy. Chips over done too. My soup was nice but most of the meals were very overcooked. Shame really. Nice beer on tap. I have been told that evening meals are excellent so perhaps we just had a poor lunch experience. Nice staff and location.

Can’t comment on the rooms but the pub is wonderful and the staff are as awesome if not more than the pub! This picture shows how good the ice cream is! A lovely family welcoming pub, well worth a visit!

Beautiful views and lovely pub. My only negative is it's quite expensive for what it is. Also, they serve their glasses of prosecco with massive glasses which makes the prosecco look half empty!!

Came here twice over a weekend, for drinks and nibbles on a Saturday and then for a Sunday Roast. The cheese board is very good. The roast was fantastic, one of the best I have had in a while. The desserts were amazing and the starter soup I had of wild garlic, nettles, broccoli and courgette was incredible. The service is fantastic, the staff are very friendly and smiley and they're on point, checking back and ensuring things are ok. Exactly how service should be. The location is also very good, looking out over the estuary. The atmosphere and decor are good giving a warm, friendly and upmarket feel to the place. Looking forward to coming back and sampling the rest of the menu.

Thank you - we had a lovely night, the food was amazing as always - apologies for my needy guests “have you got a dog blanket” .. “have you got a tooth pick” .. you had both .. they quite rightly thought you were wonderful… and I was proved right, it’s the best sticky toffee pudding that anyone has ever tasted.

We stayed above the restaurant in one of the rooms for one night. It had a really nice view and was clean and warm. Parking is in the street behind and costs. I would assume that’s really busy in peak months. The bed was comfy and the bath was lovely. We had a meal in the restaurant with friends and that was lovely too. The food was really nice and the staff were friendly and attentive especially our Dutch smiley girl! We also had breakfast which was included. That was tasty and served promptly. The only criticism I would have is that you can’t check in until 4.00 and have to check out by 10.00. Other than that, a very pleasant stay

We loved our long lunch with an amazing view. Everything was excellent, the menu, food and friendly service. So good to find somewhere with a really good children’s menu too. Will definitely return when next in this beautiful corner of Devon.

We popped in here in late January on a visit to Appledore. Glorious views of the estuary. The staff were very accommodating and were happy for us to feed our 6 month old baby the food we had brought for her. The high chair provided was one of those good plastic ones which are far more supportive than the wooden ones without a back. Now down to business - the food … Everything was delicious. My burger was cooked to perfection and all of the other toppings were to a high standard. The fries were very tasty and the onion rings were the best we’ve ever had. My husband had the ox cheek and it was so beautifully tender and served with creamy mash, carrots and a wonderful gravy. The desserts were the absolute icing on the cake! Rice pudding and sticky toffee pudding - just wow! The little touches like the caramelised nuts just set the dishes off and we practically licked the plates clean. Don’t hesitate - just go!

Incredibly accommodating, fitted four of us in as a walk in group with zero fuss despite being extremely busy between Christmas & New Year - with two dogs in tow to boot. Wonderful dinner on Boxing Day having travelled to visit Appledore where I lived as a child. Booked the RG on a recommendation of a couple we met on the way and weren’t disappointed. I ordered the duck and beetroot which was beautiful - the veggies and sauce were particularly amazing! My husband ordered the fresh fish and was also impressed (he is the foodie of the partnership!). Portions were a perfect size and being seated upstairs, we had a lovely setting, over looking the estuary and over to Instow. A lovely meal which enhanced our visit.

We wanted a quiet, leisurely, evening meal to celebrate my birthday and for the second year, we got exactly that. The meal was extremely good, well cooked, perfectly served and thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you Nicky and the staff for rounding off our celebrations perfectly.

Probably one of the best Sunday Lunches ever. Great service from very friendly staff, excellent food and superb views over the estuary. Exceeded all expectations which were high to start off with. Quality of vegetarian food was very high and appreciated by a number of our party. Pork Belly and Roast Beef Sunday lunches were excellent and the plaice with brown shrimp and samphire was to die for. Very relaxed atmosphere too.

I’ve just spent a lovely evening at the Royal George with 5 friends. The service was very good and extremely friendly, and the food was excellent. I was especially impressed with their response to my request for my meal to be heated up as part of it wasn’t hot. I received apologies and an offer of anything while I waited, then a new freshly cooked, hot dish which was delicious. I was very happy with that, but then they didn’t charge for my dish. This was unexpected and excellent customer service. My friends were very complimentary of their meals and there were clean plates all round. I haven’t experienced such good customer service for a long time, and coupled with great food, this is definitely a place to come back to.

Sunday lunch was a amazing. It's unusual to complain about this but the food was soooo good the fact there was so much of it it was such a shame to leave any. Pork belly lunch with pulled pork, yorkie, piles of veg and potatoes. Nice looking dinner menu as well, lovely service and such great views over the estuary.

Shame it seems to be slipping..been alot in the past , menu has got very limited .you have to have what they want no compromise..erm customer was right not here..and it was nothing special we asked for.but as previous review says you just can't have one meal if set for two or ask for something of the set menu to be put in main...won't budge..so never going back

I'm not going to drag this out. Sunday Lunch ! You had to have 2 courses for £25 Queried that as only wanted one but it is what it is, you have to have minimum 2. Starter was gone in a mouthful. Roast beef main was so disappointing. Tasteless , roasties were like bullets. Enjoyed the Yorkshire, left the rest. We politely complained and although it wasn't itemised on our bill apparently it had been taken off, however we. Paid £57 for 2 starters and 4 drinks? 🤷‍♀️ I don't mind paying a price for good quality food. We were really looking forward to lunch as heard good reports. Sorry would not return. Felt compelled to write a review as so very disappointed ☹️

The food was amazing, my husband had the beef steak and it was succulent, cooked to perfection very much melt in the mouth experience. I had the prawn & fish linguine, which was divine. The seafood was fresh, flavoursome and it was the best dish I have eaten for a while. The service was friendly, professional and very efficient. We had sea views and it felt like a very personal dinig experience as we were seated up stairs. Highly recommended x

What a delightful couple of nights. We stayed in the Sailors Rest which was spacious, comfortable and very well equipped. A five minute walk down to the Royal George for breakfast and dinner was no hardship. The food was top class, perfectly cooked breakfast for my husband and lovely fruity granola for myself. As for dinner……. my hake was fresh, delicate and very well complimented by herby potato dumplings, apple rose ketchup, samphire and fennel. The whole experience was a pleasure and I expect that we shall be back. Thank you Sacha ant team.

If you are in and around Appledore, this establishment is well worth a visit. Located on the end of the harbour, it has fabulous sea views. They serve a lovely range of really fresh tasting food. Suitable for all dietary requirements. Dog friendly too.

We wanted a lovely midday lunch whilst visiting Appledore and read online this place was the best for Fish and Chips in the area. We were found a table that accommodated us and our dog. The menu wasn't terribly inspiring and pricey but we each ordered a meal. The food was poor, it tasted like it had been cooked in old oil, the fish itself was white and fresh, once disposing of the batter. The burger was piled with lettuce, salsa, what appeared to be some form of bacon, cheese and eventually a burger, way too much relish making the bun soggy. The food wasn't very hot, luckily the plates were warm to help. Sadly we left most of it and at £18+ per meal a vast waste of money. Do yourself a favour, have a drink, enjoy the view but eat somewhere else.

Walked into Appledore from. Northam along the SW coastal path and called in on the off chance of a table for lunch. Lovely warm welcome and service. The chicken and the curry mains were beautiful, tasty and presented wonderfully. The deserts, Lemon tarts were equally beautiful. Well done to the kitchen and front of house staff.

We found this place quite disappointing. Our waitress was quite aloof and disinterested, which set the tone and gave the place a weird and unwelcome vibe. We couldn't wait to get out of there. We passed on dessert.

We picked the Royal George for our wedding reception as we had eaten here at least half a dozen occasions in the past year and enjoyed every meal. The amazing views and friendly staff were also reasons for our choice of wedding venue. This was 100% the correct decision as they couldn’t have done anything better in hosting our wedding reception. The food was incredible and we lost count of the number of guests that also commented on this. A particular menu highlight for us was the slow cooked pork belly. The staff were incredible, from the planning meetings to the night itself. We would like to say a special thank you to Josh, Sasha, Alison and Nicky. Overall, a 10/10 from us and we will certainly be returning for meals with friends and family in the near future. Thank you Royal George. Sam and Mary
