We had an excellent meal at the Hoops Inn last evening. The food was very good. My pan fried scallops with black pudding and pea purée was absolutely delicious. As were the other starters. Mains were also excellent, good food and generous portions. Excellent value for money. Also a special shout-out for the young lady who took care of us throughout the evening as well as serving everyone else and managing the bar at the same time. Great service with a smile. An excellent meal which all four of use thoroughly enjoyed.

Four of us for dinner. Sat in the bar area as we had a dog with us. Cosy old pub. We had steak, risotto, venison & duck. All were delicious. I had the duck and can honestly say it was the best meal I have had in a long time. Ordered the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream for dessert. It was so big we each had a spoonful😋. Service very good. Had booked for 6pm on a Wednesday and was busy so best to book.

This Inn totally exceeded our expectations. We chose it as we liked the appearance from outside and managed to book a table in the bar area - we were given a really quaint table in the window alcove. The food was exceptional - I had the duck and my husband had the venison for main which I have to say was the best meal I have had in a long time. Not cheap but we felt it was worth the money. Following that we had the chocolate parfait and sticky toffee pudding - again amazing. I will definitely be visiting again if we are this way on holiday. Loved it.

Oh wow the food here was really superb. I had scallops on pea purée with black pudding and then the duck breast. I can honestly say this is by far and away the best food I’ve had in last year. So much so we have booked to come again in 2 days time before we go back home. We come 2 or 3 times a year to north Devon but tonight was our first here. Staff really lovely too. Your chef is just fab!

The Hoops Inn offers wonderful grounds and a welcoming atmosphere for dog owners! It's a place you'll want to visit time and time again for its high-quality food and warm, friendly service. The charming thatched roof and cosy interiors enhance the overall appeal. We enjoyed a delicious hake risotto and tender duck breast with a red wine jus. It was a beautiful sunny day, soo we were able to relax in the wonderful landscaped gardens. A true gem near Horns Cross—I highly recommend it!

Starting a holiday at Bideford bay on Friday 9th I found The Hoops inn en route and my friend recommended it. Honestly the best roast dinner I think I’ve ever had (Sunday roast on the 11th) We were sat on a large table in the room behind the bar which was lovely as there was only two of us and we have a quiet little cocker spaniel. Produce was fresh and full of rich creamy flavour. The lovely lady who I can only presume to be the manager very accommodating and calling everyone ‘pet’ We were served mainly by a lovely girl named Millie, attentive and polite throughout. I ordered the blue cheese and wall nut salad, a pork roast and a caramel tart all of which was outstanding. I couldn’t fault anything and highly recommend to anyone passing.

We visited during our holiday and despite pre-booking Sunday roast dinner they didn’t seem to have a record of our booking. We were able to be seated after a few minutes so it was fine. Three of us ordered roast and my son had the children’s pesto gnocchi. The food took longer than expected to arrive (which we suspect was because they weren’t expecting us). The roast beef was amazing! And the gravy was delicious! A really good roast. However, my son started to eat his gnocchi then realised they’d forgotten the pesto sauce it was meant to be in! I took it over to the bar and the lady apologised and took it back to the kitchen to get the sauce put on it. We ordered two desserts - sticky toffee pudding and 3 scoops of ice cream for my son. The waitress put the desserts down and I asked for a spoon to eat mine with and she muttered something and went away. I assumed she’d gone to get me a spoon but she never returned! After a few mins I went and asked at the bar. My son started to eat his ice cream and realised he’d been given vanilla and not ginger, which is what he’d asked for! We couldn’t be bothered to go back to the bar yet again so he just ate it. When we came to pay we’d been charged for a large lemonade, instead of a lime and soda. I pointed this out and the lady removed it from the bill and she did also apologise for the mishaps during our meal. Overall it’s a lovely pub and the food was superb but I’ve had to knock off a star because there were too many things not quite right with the experience!

Two excellent meals at The Hoops Inn restaurant in Horns Cross, Bideford, North Devon. For our first meal we both had the fresh fish and chips, the fish was haddock which was very enjoyable. Our second meal was the Sunday roast dinner all three of us on this occasion chose the roast beef, two of us went with the beef topside and my daughter chose the beef sirloin. All very enjoyable washed down with excellent local ales. Staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Excellent meals.

My wife and I visited this restaurant on a Thursday the 2nd of May 2024, at about 2pm. The restaurant advertises good food, all day long. I ordered mussels and a portion of chips, my wife ordered the fish and chips. The mussels which were served were not of a half reasonable condition, being over cooked resulting in their being shrunken and tough. Leeks were added to the cream sauce and this was four pieces, through cut and completely uncooked. The chips were dry and almost cold. The batter on the fish was dark on the outside but doughy on the inside though the fish was ok. I explained our disappointment to the staff, who carried our concerns to the kitchens. No contact was made as we paid the bill. With hind sight this was a mistake. On leaving, I asked if there was a new chef as we had been there in the past and had enjoyed our meals. I was told that it was the same chef.

We were staying here for a night so opted to also have dinner here. We had booked in advance to ensure a table. When we arrived the young lad on the bar didn't really see to have much customer service experience. We had arrived about 5-8 mins before our reservation, and he told us that we were early so couldn't have the table yet and to stand and wait. We ordered some drinks with him and he seemed to walk off to get these ready. A lady then came over who was a lot more pleasant and showed us to our table. We placed our food order with her a while later and the drink still hadn't arrived. She ended up having to go and sort our drinks out herself and bring them over. We ordered the steak and burger. The steak was tender and tasted great and cooked to our liking. The burger was nice, but seemed to have had to much pepper added to it so it was hard to enjoy the taste of the rest of the burger. All in all the food was nice, and the service from the ladies were served us was pleasant and friendly. The young lad could do with some customer service training mind.

We went to Hoops Inn for a Monday night evening meal for my actual birthday after a weekend away - long drive home and cooking was not an option! Hoops is my 'local' for drinks and meals and never fails to provide good wines, food and hospitality. I work in hospitality and have driven past this pub hundreds of times but never visited. Every November our family hire out a large house and this year The Hoops Inn was the closest Inn. We booked for 10 people and we were not disappointed, food, drinks and service was excellent, the food is locally sourced and who ever is looking after the cask ales is doing a cracking job. A very quirky pub with little corridors, passages, little stairs up and down and little snugs. Original stone walls and a very welcoming atmosphere. We will definitely be visiting again soon!

We have just spent the weekend at the Hoops Inn. The acommodation was in the Courtyard which was an absolutely lovely room and very spacious. Beautiful bathroom. Comfortable bed room was very warm and cosy. Breakfast was really nice. Staff were really plesant and helpful. unfortunately only downside was the evening meal. I did make a good choice but the other meal was overcooked and definately not worth the money everythng seemed overpriced and there was not much of a choice. Such a pity as it is a lovely place we would stay again but probably not eat in the Restaurant unless there was a better menu.

This was my first visit to the Hoops for a number of years. We knew (I was travelling with a chef)! that we would be passing by after a trip away so thought we would see what it was like under a new set of management. The previous evening we had looked at the menu on line but were shocked by the small offering of dishes given to us on a not crowded A4 sheet of paper! We normally make allowances for slight changes to menu's due to seasonal shortages etc; but this was an unacceptable change from the website! Still the food in parts was good, I had a perfectly cooked sirloin steak, which was the most difficult part of the dish, butt then let down by palid but cooked chips, no dressing on the rocket and massive onion rings which were all batter and little onion. A large portion but just annoying that the diffiult part was perfect and let down by the easier components! My partner went for the Hake with a breadcrumb topping and sampfire. The well cooked Hake had plain cold breadcrumbs, not toasted in any way and not dressed. Once again the hard part of cooking fish well was done and then ruined by the breadcrumb topping sticking in your throat! I had mussels to start which were plump and juicy, hard not to get that around this area of Devon, and had an unusual mix of bacon and leek bite with it in a plain juice, not a classic wine or cider jus as you would expect with mussels, not unpleasant but I would not order it again. There is promise but some work of the simpler/easier parts would make all the difference, and that menu comapred to the website is a serious misleading issue.

Stopped here in the hope of a traditional pub lunch of ploughman's, or a nice plain beef or ham sandwich, but unfortunately it's just yet another overpriced, pretentious gastro pub/restaurant. A lovely building, lovely gardens and dog friendly, it could've been good, but sadly we didn't stop as we really hadn't budgeted for £20+ per head for lunch, and with portions far bigger than we'd normally anticipate for an evening meal.

Popped in here for Sunday lunch as I traveled to my holiday destination. The pub is full of character and the staff cheerful and efficient. I opted for the roast beef and it was outstanding - the beef was well cooked and tender and served with roast potatoes and a variety of veg including sweet potatoes and cauliflower cheese as well as home made Yorkshire pudding. Large servings so bring an appetite. This was one of the best Sunday roasts I’ve eaten anywhere. Try The Hoops, you won’t be disappointed.

Excellent break..great weather. This 13th Old Coach House provided a great environment for our Annual short break. Rooms were excellent, good size and all facilities. Staff are friendly and helpful and there are beautiful gardens for an afternoon drink. We were blessed with glorious weather which always helps. In terms of food, breakfasts were excellent, lunchtime snacks good but to be honest evening meals could have been better in terms of service and quality. This was the only issue which prevented me from giving it an excellent rating.

The roast beef was well cooked, tender, and tasty, according to my husband, with whom it was a real hit. The portions were generous and served by friendly staff. Thankfully for me, the vegetarian choice (gnocchi) was just as delicious. It felt like a very...

Whilst on holiday we visited the hoops for lunch. We wore our masks in there till we got to the table and when moving around. Others didn’t seem to. Staff were all masked up. I had the fish goujon ciabatta. 2 very large goujons in it plus skinny fries, salad and coleslaw. Two in party had the pulled pork, one hunters chicken, another a burger ( biggest they have ever seen). One gammon. All meals were lovely. Two ahared a cream tea, which again was delicious. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Worth a visit.

We were staying nearby in Horns Cross and tried the Sunday Roast at the Hoops Inn. Fantastic food, we both had the beef and it was wonderful. We enjoyed it so much that we booked again on Wednesday night. Again the food was amazing, I had sea bass and my husband had the chicken, really tasty food highly recommend if you’re nearby. we have been dining, drinking and staying at The Hoops for over 30 yearsbut our loyalty has come to an end after a disappointing meal and visit on Bank Holiday Sunday last.Whilst we accept the old ambiance has been curtailed by Covid, since Rebcca and James bought the lease from John Milan there are serious shortcomings in their offering:the menu was very restricted to largely Sunday roasts. fine for lunch but not for the eveningwhere we expected the normal menu to be available.we opted, because we had no choice, for the pork loin. the pork was acceptblebut the vegetables all seemed like leftovers.the roast potatoes almost impossible to cut.the Yorkshire puds were cardboard.the Taworri was substituted by a pleasant but inferior Sauv Blanc but still the same price and listed on the bill as Taworri.Anna ,our server, asked our opinion on the meal but made it clear she disapproved of our negative comments. So why ask in the first place. All in all not the place we used to enjoy and recommend.

We went here a few years ago and it was amazing so booked twice more when we came back in August. We thought We would pop in for a drink And was Abruptly told there were no tables No apologies just sent away in the rain didn’t even try to fit us in. We had a table booked for that evening and I must say The staff weren’t on form We had the chicken but it was quite dry, the next visit a few days later we had steak and it was superb though I must say I think it was quite pricey for pub grub. I’ll put the service down to the restrictions due to Covid but it really is a lovely setting and a lovely pub

Booked a family meal out during holiday, made a point of asking for gluten free menu and ordered gluten free beef dish. Meal arrived and looked nice, however, tried the coated halloumi only to find it was macaroni cheese! Alerted the staff who were apologetic and offered to replace, but gave little assurance there were any checks in place on orders for food allergies. For me it doesn’t mean a trip to hospital, but for the next person with a nut allergy it may do. Very poor food management.

The restaurant had a country cottage atmosphere, with nooks and crannies in abundance. Social distancing was very well maintained and the entire area was Covid secure. Food quality was very high and portions were huge and fairly priced. The restaurant operated the government discount scheme. This is a delightful place to eat.

We have visited for pub food many times, but this time something was lacking. Steak dinner was always a real treat here, lovely produce, well-cooked and beautifully presented. This time it felt as though it had been rushed onto the plate. Where have the lovely homemade chips gone as we were given bog-standard frozen thick ones. The tomato salad was ok this time, but the usual side salad is far superior with toasted vine tomatoes. Finally, the onion rings were burned with barely any left onion inside and these are always the treat of our usual steak dinner. I will say the garlic butter and chimichurri were delicious with the steak. Please go back to your usual standards please. Locals love it!

We stayed at The Anchor Inn for 1 night. Our room was lovely, very comfortable. Felt very home from home. Had everything we needed for a cosy evening. Ate in the bar on the evening. Food was delicious. Especially the crumble. Breakfast the following morning was lovely. All the staff were very friendly. Would definately visit this beautiful little place again.

WOW, we had the most amazing Sunday lunch. Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing ball, peas, carrots, French beans, roast parsnips, cabbage, cauliflower cheese & not forgetting the amazing crispy roast potatoes and lashings of thick gravy. The meat, Yorkshire pudding & stuffing came on the plate, followed by a dish of 8 roasters and another dish with the 6 vegetables in & a big jug of gravy. I dont think anyone would be able to eat everything. The servings are huge. Everything is freshly cooked, served piping hot, it was just amazing. We ate as much as we could, but there was easily enough for another 3 or 4 servings. The landlord suggested taking it home with us, but we didn't. After a rest, we ordered apple crumble & custard. Again, the portion was huge. We could have shared 1, and it would have been enough. It's a shame we don't live here because we would be regulars.

Excellent fish and chips. Plus, a pint in the pub across the lane while you wait for your order. Pub belongs to the same people. Eat food in the bar. All decorated for Halloween.

Food was excellent great atmosphere and far too much for us to finish but I tried. My youngest said it’s the best meal she’s ever had ( better not tell the wife).
