Blackwell's Pasties in Torridge

A couple of years ago we discovered Blackwell's Pasties and their amazing Big Berthas. This year we took a bit of a detour on our trip to Cornwall so we could buy another Big Bertha because they are just too good to miss.

We regularly visit Bideford and our favourite treat is to get Blackwell pasties for lunch! They really are some of the best you will find! We branched out from traditional and tried some other varieties this time, and it did not disappoint! Highly recommended, they can also be found in a few local cafes!

Amazing pasties, so much choice too, staff are very polite & helpful to plus going into the shop the smell. Is DELICIOUS 😋

used to be brilliant but suspect either been taken over or someone else is making the pasties now , nowhere near as good, even the giant pasty which is now £9 !! doesnt look as grand as 3-4 yrs ago when it cost £5 , dissapointing

Don't believe the hype. Their pasties are ok but nothing to rave about. I bought a dozen large Devon pasties. Filling was generous but not well seasoned. Will continue to hunt out something better

Great pies & pasty's, best around North Devon. All made & baked on the premises. It's a family run business & been there for years, I've been using them for years too & will do until they shut down. 5***** well recommend.

Definitely NOT award winning. Cold. Horrible. No idea when they are supposed to have won any awards. They state it but don't back it up.

My kitchen was out of use, due to having new flooring laid, so went to Blakewell's to get something for lunch. The lady kidly bagged up the pasties, took the payment and I took them home only to fund that our "Hot" pasties were very cold, not even slightly warm. I managed to get into the kitchen to pop them into the microwave to warm them through. After all this they were not nice pasties at all. Extremely thick, dry pastry, dry filling. I won't be back and would not recommend them to anyone. I'd like to know when they won any awards, and where, and feel they are using something to promote their business from many years ago. Easy to say "Award winning", but from when? They certainly shouldn't be winning any awards nowadays. They should have to justify their statements

Your pasties supposed to be the best of the country went down for a devon pasty and had to put it in the bin as its all mushy inside and it isn't proper beef its minced meat went in last Thursday around 10:30am I purchased a devon pasty and a coffee cake

Heard a lot about how nice the pasties are, so we popped in to pick up a couple bits. Must say the cheese straws where absolutely fantastic, full of flavour, light and crispy. Parking just up the road was good, service was perfect, with advise as how long the pasties would keep. Will go again when I can. Opening ours are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday 7am- 2pm

A MUST have if you need to feel like your back home after being way from home for sometime

After having some complimentary scones provided in the accommodation that we were staying at in the local area we had to find out where they were from. We contacted Blackwells via Facebook to place an order to collect the following day with more scones plus some pies, a pasty and sausage roll. It was all delicious would recommend to others in the area :)

All very good, lovely cheese straws. Little snack pasties at 50p ideal for a snack or kids lunch box.

What a shame Blackwells was always the place to go for a pasty in Bideford the pasty’s are getting smaller and smaller and hardly any filling what a shame

Tried Blackwells today on a recommendation, I bought a steak and Guiness and a couple of chicken and mushroom. I had the steak one earlier and have to say how disappointed I was. It had about 3 bits of steak in it and literally no gravy so was dry as b*****y. Not sure I’m looking forward to the chicken and mushroom ones now!

Unwelcoming, messy store with rude woman behind the counter. Detoured off our route as this was rated best pasty store in UK, which it definitely is not. The shop was small, messy and poorly stocked. They only allow 2 people in and when a 3rd person walked in, the woman behind the counter rudely said ‘Um can you read the sign?!’ We had the Devon pasty and it was terrible, pastry was dry and crumbly and inside resembled the texture of tinned cat food. Will certainly never return and baffled as to how they won the title.

When we knew we were going to Bideford we specifically researched for the best pasty bakery and headed to Blackwells Pasties. We walked up to shop and with one foot inside we were “welcomed” by a member of staff who just looked up and ordered us out of the shop - rudely telling us “one in one out” . No good morning or hello just one in one out ……. Well we chose out and won’t be going back. Customer service non existence - retail training required rapidly.

Took a trip down to this place while visiting family who live nearby. I was apprehensive after reading some 1 star reviews and some people criticising them for not being authentic, however it seems the owners have taken great steps to refer to their pasties as “Devon Pasties”. As someone who has eaten many pasties (from wherever one wishes to say they are from) these are some of the best I’ve had.

We drove all the way from Braunton to get what was supposed to be prize winning pasties. Big mistake 1 was parking at quay car park and walking up as it’s extremely steep road going to this place. Big mistake 2 was buying the pasties, the filling was very dry although they were decent size but pastry was too thick. Also the server was quite abrupt and didn’t even thank me for the order.

Rude staff rather chuck my money on floor

OMG the pasties are soooooo good. A little bit out of the way but if you want the real deal this is it. Get a large hot one and your in pasty heaven.

A really nice moist pasty with good short crust pastry. Saw an earlier review that complained about a cheese and onion pasty. Of course it wouldn't be great - pasties aren't supposed to be cheese & onion!!!!

Very disappointing. Saw the good reviews and walked across town specifically try a fine pasty. Very very disappointing to be served with cold Cornish pasties that were sub par. Don't understand the awards and 5 star reviews. Pasty tasted as filled with cheap meat and hard pastry. Avoid.

We always stop at Blackwells when we are in Bideford as we know they make the best pasties in the area. They also make great sausage rolls, steak slices etc. All freshly made at the shop. We bought extra this time to freeze and take home with us!

The best pasties in the westcountry by far

Absolutely love Blackwell's pasties!! Can remember my dad coming home with a plate pastie on Saturdays after work, now I'm 30 with twin boys doing the same for them haha. Can't wait till this lockdowns over for them to open again!! Top pasties an top staff, always friendly, even at 5 in the morning you get a smile 👌😁

Shared two pasties between three of us. Some of the worst pasties I have ever eaten. The cheese and onion pasty was re heated in a microwave and was possibly the worst pasty I have ever eaten. It was stodgy, flavourless and barely edible. The Devon flackery was not much better. I would avoid at all costs.

Had heard so much about 'Blackwells' just had to Visit.... The Staff are Extremely Friendly and Helpful and the Pasties are 'to die for'... Pastry and Filling are 100% plus!! They have a Superb range of Pastries (Sweet and Savoury) right across the board.... and the Prices are Very, Very Reasonable which is a delight in this day and age.... I can Only say Absolutely Good things both about the Products and Staff and Premises.... They certainly Care about their Customers!!!! 'Greggs and Warrens' Listen and LEARN..... We certainly will be returning here Very Soon.... Highly recommended.

Set out to find this shop after reading some of the reviews. Decent pastie. Nice pastry and really full of meat and veg. This bakers is just out of town but worth finding. A shop full of home cooked pies, pasties and other lovely looking food. Good p, sensible price too,, paid £2.20 for a pastie or there abouts.

Avoid bacon roll, microwaved, bacon ok'ish but roll soggy and not very nice. On the other hand their pasties are very tasty mmmmmm

We stumbled across this gem whilst walking down the hill into town. Very friendly and a wonderful selection of grub. The Devon Pasty is one of the best I've ever eaten, and I've eaten a lot. Nice weight to it too if you have a good appetite :) Very good prices too..

Wonderfull pastys and the most amazing steak & kidney pies you will ever find! Brilliant!

Lovely Pasties, sausage rolls, Pizza, cakes and more, all cooked in shop. Opens early but closes around 2'OClock. On road parking which is very limited, and can be tricky due to busy road.

great place if my waste would allow i would eat here every day the pasties are the best i have ever had but this is not all they do and everything else is done to the same high standard the only small problem is if you are driving it can be difficult to park sometimes.

Lovely staff, very thick pastry, sometimes slightly undercooked.

These are as good as they could get. Buy and enjoy, and then go back and buy again. Really good lean meat, good veg and packed out. Enjoy.

They sell a lot more than pasties at Blackwell's and everything is first class at a reasonable price. i.e. the pasties you see in the picture are about £2, you will pay double that anywhere you go in Cornwall & South Devon.

We did walk past this outlet until the aroma of food hit us when we did a quick turnaround to explore the source. The selection of pasties is vast and we chose two differing types in order to share and they were delicious and would certainly recommend a try and forget the waistline!

Without a doubt, their flaky pastry pastie is bar far the best pastie I have ever eaten. Hand made and cooked on the premises. A good old traditional shop still doing things traditionally and always with a smile. 10/10 Blackwells - we’ll done.

🥟 Amazing pasties, best around. There is a reason so many other businesses in the area buy from them. Only thing that could be improved would be a more central location, but then again they have been on Meddon Street for years now, almost an institution.

We stumbled on Blackwell's by accident when exploring Bideford on holiday. With Devon pasties being famous and it being an independent store we thought we'd try them for a picnic lunch. They kept perfectly till the next day. And were delicious. I'm not an expert on Devon pasties or on the Cornish v Devonian pasty debate. But they were good enough for us to go back and buy more when we set off for our return journey home. A delicious treat when we got home.

Called in to the shop whilst staying in the area. Great little pasty shop with great tasting pasty’s. All the other products looked great also, but managed to stick to buying just the pasty’s (extreme test of willpower!). Will definitely return next time we’re in the area. Great food.

The best Devon Pasties since Raymond's of Barnstaple went out of business! That kind of sums it all up. If you want to taste the real thing, this is it!

We have luckily been working in the area for the last couple of days and some suggested trying a pasty from the local bakery.

Not a shop that you would easily discover. If you visit the Pannier Market leave by the left hand exit (when looking uphill). Then follow Silver Street to the end and turn left. You will see the shop from the end of Silver Street. Once located you are warmly welcomed and treated to a wide range of pies and pasties. I had the traditional Devon pasty which was heated to perfection. The pastry was flexible and tasty with no hint of over cooking. Once inside the case the filling was moist and beautifully succulent. All those other users of Tripadvisor (thank you) were absolutely correct - these homemade pasties are simply the best!

Having scoured TripAdvisor for the best pasties in north Devon, it became apparent a trip to Blackwell's - tucked down a little street in Bideford - is a must. The shop itself is very old-school and everything written about the family-sized 'Big Bertha' pasties is absolutely true. Also a great idea to personalise a pasty as a gift... However, the actual pasties themselves were a little bit disappointing. The filling was quite heavy, as was the pastry. Much preferred the pasty we'd tried from John's in Instow a day or two before... sorry, Blackwell's!

Tucked away off the beaten track but worth tracking down they are unique and locally famous for the quality of their pies and pasties but also offer so much more . The creme del a creme

Everything is made and cooked on the premises, superb pasties, pies, sausage rolls and cakes. The 'Big Bertha' a giant pasty is a great gift, will feed 4 normal people or 2 greedy ones hahaha.

In all my years i have never found a bakery as good as Blackwells. I have been going there for at least 20 years and never been disappointed.... and the steak and stilton pie is to die for.
