The Anchor Inn in Torridge

Food good but a Very long wait for the food 3/4 for our main meal. They forgot our pudding so had to wait another half hour

We are staying in our motorhome nearby and walked down for dinner. We had decided where we were going but as it started to rain we went into the first pub we found. I’m so glad we did! Lovely old traditional pub, friendly staff and great food! We had to wait quite a while for our dinner but I didn’t mind as it was all homemade and freshly cooked. I’m vegetarian and get used to the usual boring selection but the vegan vegetable plait I ordered was one of the nicest meals out I’ve ever had in a pub ☺️

I was staying locally and came here 3 consecutive days for lunch. The service was friendly, the locals were welcoming and the food was tremendous (imaginative and varied vegan and vegetarian choices). The local dogs were also great and my 2 Irish Setters were given a fuss, treats and a water bowl and they loved it too. Great beer, also! Will definitely come back here when in the area. Thank you all and hope to be back soon.

We went to this restaurant for evening dinner, the first visit had 1 server, think she was Manager/owner due to staff not turning up, she worked very hard to take orders and serve. The next day, curry night we booked and were told they had a party of 15 for curry, at 6.30pm could we adjust our booked time to be earlier or later, we opted for earlier 6pm. 1hr & 40mins later all we had was a starter, 4 of the large group were late and turned up at 7pm, they were served straightaway, after the rest of the group had commenced eating, although we had ordered curry too and were just ignored. We had changed our time to help the restaurant but at 7.40pm, we paid the bill and left, with no curry.

Pub: Excellent food and service, would definitely recommend the chowder and the Jail Ale.

Lovely little pub, good selection of ciders and food was 10/10, sometimes a little low on staff so might have a little wait but they are all lovely and friendly. Allows dogs

This pub is a gem. Such a cosy atmosphere, with a welcoming homely feel. Lovely wood burner to add to the cosy feel and the food was gorgeous. The owner and staff were very friendly. Really clean cute ladies toilets. I absolutely LOVED this pub. 💖

Great Sunday lunch and great friendly staff

Living in South Devon, we were able to take advantage of some glorious weather to travel to the north of the county at short notice. our stay at the Anchor was all we could have wished for, clean room, overlooking some countryside, Sensibly priced accommodation, food and drink. a pleasant patio to enjoy our drink and food in the sun. Friendly staff and ample parking.

The first evening of our hols. and called in for a drink. The menu was so mouthwatering we stayed for a meal and it was gorgeous. My friend ordered the halloumi burger and I the veg lattice, which was so delicious......along with the extra friendly series, the evening was a delight. Thanks all very much

My wife and I spent two nights at this lovely little BnB. We had been here a few years previous to have some lunch and it was undergoing some renovation works at the time. When we came back we were very impressed with the new look of the restaurant area and the terrace beer garden area is lovely and modern. The pub/bar area has still got all of its original charm that you would expect from a traditional pub. The rooms are very clean, smart TVs and very comfy beds. My only small criticism would be that the showers aren’t very powerful and there is no hair dryer or fan provided. We always bring our own fan to hotels anyway, just incase! We paid £80 a night and this included breakfast (very reasonable) and the breakfast is made to a high standard with quality ingredients. We also ate on both evenings in the restaurant as we enjoyed the roast so much on the first Sunday night that we stayed, again the food was just exceptional! The 2nd evening my wife had the mussels and I had the sea food chowder, it really was some of the best we have tried! The drink prices are also very reasonable compared to most pubs these days. 10/10 service and lovely, friendly staff. Would highly recommend and definitely stay again!

We cannot recommend this place enough! We had such a lovely welcome from the two members of staff that evening, super friendly. The food was amazing, can definitely recommend all four dishes we had! Especially the asparagus and goats cheese starter and the amazing sea bass! Great flavors and really fresh. Great decor and just a lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be back, thank you.

Visited on a Wednesday night, which is their regular curry night, and had an interesting table next to the piano. There were 4 different curries on offer so we chose the vegetarian and the Beef Massaman both of which were really good, not too spicy though, just as we liked - the other two options were hotter apparently, and extra chilli was available. There was a good range of beers to accompany the food and I can especially recommend the Italian lager - Polpetti, smooth and tasty. It was a very busy evening and the staff were rushed off their feet (the price of popularity!) but they were all unfailing good humoured and friendly with a particular shout out to Laura, I think it was who served us. In common with a lot of places these days they are trying to recruit additional help. We would definitely return here if/when we're back in the area

Decided to visit today (mother's day) so had expected to be fully booked and unable to slot me in. There were a lot of tables booked (maybe even fully booked?!) However, the staff were very accommodating, very friendly and felt the atmosphere was more than welcoming. As mentioned, I expected a wait on food, again pleasantly surprised as there was no waiting, the food was fantastic, the facilities (male toilets, outside seating area) were clean and fresh. All in all a very pleasant experience. For anyone looking for a great day out in Hartland, this place comes highly recommended by me, it is in a great spot, there are plenty of parking spaces behind the buildings, I will definitely visit again soon!!!

Outstanding! Probably one of the best Sunday Roasts I’ve ever eaten and in my 50s, I’ve eaten a lot. Everything was piping hot, freshly cooked, loads of flavour, delicious! Thank you!

This is an excellent village pub with delicious food and a very warm welcome from the hosts Fif and Ann. The rooms were clean and very comfortable. We stayed with family and friends for 3 nights to celebrate New Year’s Eve and had a fabulous time. I highly recommend this friendly pub for a chance to enjoy and explore the Hartland peninsula and the coastal path. We will be back !

Very welcoming staff. Really nice ales. Good value pub food, well cooked. Dog friendly, he was given lots of treats! Lovely warm log fire. We went there in the afternoon to thaw out after a long cold walk. There is a lot going on at this venue. They have a dart board and a pooltable which are becoming sadly rare. They also have regular music nights. I wish we lived nearer!

Long time since been to Anchor but decided to go out for Friday night meal. Ambiance good, friendly waiting staff who couldn't do enough. We ordered steak, pan fried chicken and pie of the day. All three of us were suitably impressed with presentation and taste of all our meals. Very competitive pricing. 4 glasses of wine, 2 pints of beer, 3 meals and a treacle tart total 87. For a local pub food excellent.

I would not recommend eating here, the food was terrible, worse than a school dinner. It wasn't that it was cheap. The place looked run down and dirty. Taking a drink outside was the best bit. Will not eat here again!

Tried the pub as from the outside it looks inviting. What a mistake, just a few locals in there and not much atmosphere bit grim. Ordered some beers which arrived cloudy (end of barrel) when I complained Landlady wasn’t very interested in changing it. She finally changed it after consulting one of her regulars. Not very welcoming, not the cleanest of places. We’re just glad we didn’t book the accommodation. Keep clear there are better places to drink.

After visiting the pub near this one we tried, again, to get some food. This one was not inviting and was playing 'garage' music. No one in the pub, not surprised, and asked if they were doing food. Answer was no sorry. Now taking into account it was a Saturday bank holiday weekend we all thought it was pretty poor.

Only found The Anchor open on one occasion during our stay in Hartland despite an external chalkboard indicating otherwise. The wine was also a big mistake - must have been opened months ago. Don't think we will be returning.

Called in for dinner mid-week in October. The pub was quiet and we were offered a full menu including several home made options. The food arrived quite quickly and was excellent (we sampled the steak and Stilton pie and chilli). We were made very welcome and the food was above our expectations. I agree with other comments that the interior could be livened up a little, but don't let that put you off! Well worth a try.

Having planned to eat here for my Birthday meal out during our holiday, we were completely confused walking into this pub after researching the website...The website pictures a modern pub serving what I would call gourmet style food. However on arriving (on a Saturday night) we entered a tired, basic looking pub/restaurant with one man playing darts and a lady with children (noisy as we entered) with lots of chips and beans left over - the rest of the place was empty and had no atmosphere.We decided not to stay for food so cannot comment on this. Unfortunately the feel of the place just wasn't what we were expecting from the website..As a side note - The pub does not accept card payments and is cash only.

Pub was a little down at heel. Friendly locals and helpful host. Had booked a two course carvery. But on arrival was told they didn't do carvery any more. We paid the same price as the two course carvery. But had to pay for dessert. The meal was hot, fresh vegetables and tender meat. But felt cheated by web site and phone conversation when booking. Staff did offer us two free puddings, but we declined. Web site needs to changed. Wouldn't visit again.

Ate in here 3 times during our stay in Hartland and on each occasion the food and service was excellent. Ok, so you have to wait a while for your food but on our first visit here the young lady who seemed to do everything, apart from the cooking explained that it was all cooked fresh so there would be a wait. As we had plenty of time, we were on holiday, this was not a problem and our young grandson was kept amused by watching people play pool and drawing with the paper and crayons provided.

Excelente menú, el plato de entrantes compartir eran magníficas, mango y parcelas brie estaban deliciosos. 4 filetes, hamburguesas y costillas todas 1 estaban cocinados a nuestro gusto y servido con una sonrisa. Llegamos a un precio razonable, a pocos bienvenida gente de allí. Pedimos la cena, tuvimos que esperar un buen 30 minutos, que no me importa si la comida es buena. La comida era bastante agradable.

What can you say. The food, staff and establishment filled the bill. There was nothing wrong and nothing outstanding. The purpose of visiting was satisfying but not really memorable. I would go back and know that I would be satisfied.

Been a few times when been on short breaks- usually a lovely welcoming meal, served on time and tempted into a pud! Tonight has been a little surprising for us, we called ahead to book for 7.30. Ordered around 7.45 as waitress was on her own running the place as well as the hoteliers upstairs! No other helpers in sight. Starter of garlic bread and cheese to share took 50 mins??? But she knocked it off the bill - was clearly embarrassed! Meal then came 30 mins later, asked for a well done steak, edges and steak looked and tasted nice, got halfway through and it was pink raw! Im pregnant and have to be careful! Waitress agreed it wasn't what I had ordered and SHE suggested it was replaced. She returned to say the manager and chef had said because I had eaten 'half of it' I didn't qualify for a fresh one as I should of approached the waitress (who was serving all on her own, sooner!) I don't make it a habit to slice and dice my food before consuming so therefore I didn't know it was raw until halfway through! ... needless to say the waitress for embarrassed for us and the service the pub was providing tonight. Really not impressed on this visit and unfortunately customer service was not their forte. It was the waitress/bar maid/B&B runner/the phone receptionist we felt sorry for! - top marks for her, other wise rubbish ......

We had just arrived in the village with our dog after a long drive and just wanted to sit down to a couple of pints and a meal. Staff and locals at the anchor were very friendly. We were shown to a table by the window and our orders taken. There was a traditional relaxed pub atmosphere. Staff came back to keep us informed of progress in the kitchen though we did not have to wait long. Food was good and portions generous. Good value pub grub: just what we needed.
