As a group of 8 with 3 labradors we booked for lunch at this marvellous traditional old thatched pub. The welcome was warm from Oliver the landlord and our table ready , we all chose different dishes from the menu - a nightmare for the kitchen I’m sure. Each of us delighted with their choice either from the specials board or regular menu the portions were generous and the food freshly cooked . The two veggies in our group had options they were happy with too . When back in this area we will definitely return best pub food we’ve had in ages.

A lovely old traditional pub, not many left these days. We called in for a drink and stayed for lunch. We were very welcomed by the landlord. It’s very oldy worldy with a nice relaxed atmosphere. Good beer and cider on tap. We had the homemade steak pie with veg and chips which was delicious and a very generous portion. Compliments to the chef! Our dog was also welcome in the pub which makes life easier. We need to support these little local pubs before they all disappear.

First Class, if you like traditional English country pubs, you are in for a treat. This has it all, a 13th century thatched pub, low ceilings, beams, fire places, and amazing 450 year old doors!! Great food and nice Butcombe beer, staff coped with our vegetarian and vegan needs well. A really pleasant experience, I'm sure we will return. Thank you landlord.

My wife and I had dinner here last night which was a Friday evening. Tried to get in the night before but they were fully booked, so booked for the day after. It’s a great pub, dating back to 13th century, with low doors and ceilings, so tall folks beware! Staff were really nice and helpful and the food was marvellous. We both had rib eye steaks which came cooked perfectly. Massive plates of food and well worth the cost. We were staying in the village, so had a few drinks too and walked home! Excellent place and highly recommend it if your in the area.

A little gem of a place. Good selection of meals and ales, including good vegetarian options. Meals are excellent. Have not been disappointed with lunch or dinner. There are not many places that do a good steak and ale pie, this is one of 2 places that have achieved it. Will definitely keep going, worth the trip from Barnstaple.

Finally managed to visit The Coach and Horses following many recommendations. We had an excellent dinner, with a substantial Vegetarian menu for our friends. My wife and I had the Pies from the special menu, Vegetable and Beef. Both very tasty. As it was a birthday meal puddings were a requisite and again these were excellent. Sticky Toffee Sundae and Apple & Blackcurrant Crumble. The Ale was also very nice. Recommend a visit

People with allergies BEWARE. on booking stated GF required for one person, Checked on arrival GF required, asked on ordering which meals were GF (first meal delivered was the wrong one) the right one was served with us checking again that it was GF of which we were assured again. Within an hour of leaving my wife started to be violently ill and Coeliac affected people will know how bad this is. The Landlord we must say is all you could wish for and has an incredible work ethic but on this occasion his staff has rather let him down.

Nice rustic pub, had a good vibe. Friendly landlord. Food was average. Out of the 4 mains we ordered, there was plenty of meat except for the lamb. The lamb sauce was nice however very little meat which was disappointing. The waitress didn’t check back to see if everything was ok. I did mention the lack of lamb to her when she cleared the table but she seemed that she didn’t know what to do when a customer gave negative feedback. Would have given a 4/5 rating but the lamb let it down. I would recommend this pub to others, but if you’re a big meat eater, best check before you order.

We visited the village on holiday last year and the best point about it was the fabulous local pub which is run by Olly and his wife. We only met Olly at front of house but he’s a fabulously accommodating host and was able to fit us in for a meal at very short notice for Fathers Day. The beer in the pub is absolutely great if you’re a real ale drinker and there seems to be a good variety of everything else. The main meals were good but the “piece de resistance” are the fabulous deserts, sticky toffee pudding and our personal favourite chocolate brownie are just “to die for”. If you fancy a little trip out to the countryside for a nice meal and good food and lovely friendly atmosphere, you wouldn’t go far wrong in visiting The Coach & Horses in Buckland Brewer. We were staying in Westward Ho this time but came to the pub a couple of times whilst there for the week. This is a real “olde worldie” type pub with very low beams so be careful when entering and walking about. Another thing to mention is that it’s a dog friendly place and there is a nice little enclosed beer garden out the back.

We had trouble finding places to eat due to the number of people on holiday and the reduced capacity in pubs. We eventually managed to get a table at the Coach and Horses which is a bit off the beaten track, but turned out to be a gem.We arrived and found that our table was next to the wood burner which was lit (yes it was August but the day had been damp and very cool), this was a definite bonus and made the whole place seem very welcoming along with the landlord who could not have been more friendly. The social distancing arrangements seemed to be effective without taking the atmosphere away from the pub, the food was great, there were 4 of us eating and we all enjoyed it although do not be fooled by the 'mild' beef curry - it was more than a bit warm!!If we are ever in the area again we would definitely go again.

I had dinner with a friend at the Coach and Horses recently and had a fantastic time. The menu has lots of choice - for meat-eaters, vegetarians or vegans. All of the options sounded really tasty, so I struggled to decide what to go for. I eventually decided on cheesy chips as a starter and, as a main, sea bass with garlic and chilli with a side of chips and salad, and a glass of red wine. I definitely made the right choice, but am planning on returning as soon as I can to make my way through the rest of the equally yummy-sounding menu! The cheesy chips were lovely and comforting - crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with the cheese melting over for extra deliciousness. The sea bass was perfectly cooked - really tender, and the garlic and chilli made it especially flavoursome. The chips were also gorgeous. Both portions were also very generous. The staff are all really friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is really pleasant. It’s a really cosy pub dating back from the 12th century that’s really popular with everyone in the village, and there was such a buzzy social atmosphere on the night I went. I only wish my local pub was as lovely!

We went a few weeks ago with my sone and partner for Sunday lunch at the Coach & Horses. It was very busy and the landlord was serving and moving about non-stop. The fixed Sunday lunch was good and wholesome and we enjoyed the whole experience. Recently we went again. We heard the next table being told the lamb was finished and when our lamb came it was small bits of meat with a very high fat content. For dessert one requested a particular item which arrived dry, crumbly and unpleasant. The other two asked for certain dessert but with different dressings. Only one came and eventually the waitress said that she had thought we were sharing. No extra plate!I went to pay and the landlord was aware of the problems and state that the one dessert had been deducted. There was no itemised bill. His reaction to our disappointment was: Well; no one has died'.We all found that appalling. We did learn a few days later that the business is up for sale. This is not a tourist village and the pub relies on locals who were all made warmly welcome. Coming in from outside was a mistake. Shame, as we only live a few miles down the road. So: food average, service poor, attitude of management dire

We enjoyed a delicious meal, all our food was flavoursome and cooked to perfection by the excellent and friendly staff working in the kitchen! Can not recommend highly enough! Very warm welcome from the landlord, Oliver, we were served quickly and enjoyed looking around the beautiful 13th Century pub! Extensive menu and special boards, with lovely home cooked food, warm fires, will definitely be back before too long!

This is obviously a locals pub, but as visitors we felt very welcome. The food was good, we had burgers and a steak pie, with a good variety on offer, and the service was prompt, warm and friendly.

Excellent food, homely feel with the fire going and a great welcome by the landlord. Came here after a wet n windy day on the coast, could’ve stayed all night. Had thelocal beer and the steak pie; excellent.

Enjoyed an early supper on a wet and stormy evening. Welcoming warmth from a generous log fire, attentive and considerate staff, succulent salmon coked exactly right and I am told the beef curry was equally delicious. Village pub atmosphere with lots of locals enjoying a convivial drink but as visitors to the area we did not feel out of place.

It was lovely to enter such a quaint pub which was full of locals and tourists alike, where we were made very welcome, especially as We had our dog with us. We had the seafood sharing platter to start, which was a combination of the seafood dishes available as starters, they were tasty pub food. I had the oven cookedsea bass, served with new potatoes and fresh vegetables as my main which was absolutely delicious. My husband had the steak and Guinness pie which was also delicious and a proper pie with a base and sides.

Evening meal myself and daughter. Both wanted gluten free and one also vegetarian. Good choice and flexible menu. Staff understood and exchanged pitta bread on a dish for extra salad and patties. All in all a great meal not cheap but well worth the money in quality and quantity. I can highly recommend the food and also the local drought cider! This pub is well worth a visit, it gets busy so give a call to book a table!

Keen to find somewhere fitting to celebrate our husbands completion of the 100 mile Devon Coast 2 Coast bike ride - this had it all! Great food, quality beer , a fire (!) (it had been a miserable day weather wise) and a great atmosphere- so nice to find a country pub full of drinkers, eaters and locals.

Last minute booking for 7, very friendly welcome and obviously well respected by the locals! Excellent choice of food for allergies. Parking a little challenging but we may not have found a car park......? Fantastic overall, would highly recommend!

Such a lovely pub, landlord friendly and so efficient. Lunch was superb! Home cooked everything, which made such a difference. Roast potatoes best since Mum and Dads! Well worth a visit.

Booked a table in the morning for the evening. Could have just walked in as wasn't busy on the Sunday night, food was nice especially the crab cakes to start, all reasonable price, friendly staff, normal wait for food.

We both had the fillet steak and it was amazing. Great service from the friendly staff. We nearly extended our trip so we could go back again.

Booked a family Sunday lunch here, hoping to find a traditional country pub and delicious roast dinner. Certainly found the former (low beams, slightly higgledy-piggledy etc.), but sadly not the latter. The roast beef was ok - I’ve certainly had worse, but was expecting much better. Others in our party who had different dishes were much happier with the outcome.

I visit here regularly with my partner, the food and service is a consistent high standard. The landlord is very welcoming and friendly. It is a busy friendly place to eat or go for a drink. There is a nice outside area to sit too!

Great food and atmosphere, friendly efficient staff. My wife thought the sweet potato, red onion and Stilton tart off specials board was best of its kind she’d ever had. Extensive specials boards supplement fairly normal pub grub menu.

Not much more to say than the title of this review really. If you are looking for a great meal in a 13th Century Coach House, with very friendly staff, then this is the place.

Sadly arrived too late for lunch so had to make do with a pint instead and ended up getting Wetherspoons in Bideford (needs must!) Really nice little village, quaint and traditional old pub. Friendly and welcoming staff. The menu looks to die for so many things I am itching to try. Will return and if it is as well cooked as I hope I will return again and again till I have eaten my way through the menu!!!

We stayed at The Anchor Inn for 1 night. Our room was lovely, very comfortable. Felt very home from home. Had everything we needed for a cosy evening. Ate in the bar on the evening. Food was delicious. Especially the crumble. Breakfast the following morning was lovely. All the staff were very friendly. Would definately visit this beautiful little place again.

WOW, we had the most amazing Sunday lunch. Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing ball, peas, carrots, French beans, roast parsnips, cabbage, cauliflower cheese & not forgetting the amazing crispy roast potatoes and lashings of thick gravy. The meat, Yorkshire pudding & stuffing came on the plate, followed by a dish of 8 roasters and another dish with the 6 vegetables in & a big jug of gravy. I dont think anyone would be able to eat everything. The servings are huge. Everything is freshly cooked, served piping hot, it was just amazing. We ate as much as we could, but there was easily enough for another 3 or 4 servings. The landlord suggested taking it home with us, but we didn't. After a rest, we ordered apple crumble & custard. Again, the portion was huge. We could have shared 1, and it would have been enough. It's a shame we don't live here because we would be regulars.

Excellent fish and chips. Plus, a pint in the pub across the lane while you wait for your order. Pub belongs to the same people. Eat food in the bar. All decorated for Halloween.

Food was excellent great atmosphere and far too much for us to finish but I tried. My youngest said it’s the best meal she’s ever had ( better not tell the wife).
