We were both disappointed with the fish and chipsWe ordered two fish & chips and a paneer madras. We were both disappointed with the F & C. It was a beautiful large piece of fish, but we were worried on first appearance. Very pale batter on the fish and a rather dark finish to the chips. The batter was undercooked and soggy, not a trace of crispiness. The fish was good, but the batter was no complement to it. Sadly disappointing. The chips were on the very point of being over cooked, We looked at two other local pubs and the Old Lodge menu looked the best, sadly the food wasn't.

As discerning diners we have been infrequent visitors at this delightful wayside hostility for 55 years and we have always been delighted with the home made food on offer. We have also chosen on each visit one of their home made ‘specialty two in one pies’ and have never been disappointed. We first visited this pub in 1970 which from those days has built up an ‘enviable reputation’ for their speciality home made produce’. During the intervening years there has been several owners and bar managers, and doubtless different chefs, but throughout this time their home made food has remained consistently excellent. I must however say IF you are looking for the ‘modern type Michelin minimalist offering with smears, blobs, and pretty flowers on the plate?, the Weighbridge is most definitely not for you; and you are in the wrong place! However if you are searching for wholesome tasty chef made produce, that will satisfy the heartiest of appetites, you have arrived at the right place and like us you will not be disappointed. We incidentally travel 20 miles for this hospitality, and treat the place as ‘our local’. It is to the credit of passing down these much loved traditional home made recipes over the years, and the commitment of all the previous owners and managers that this consistency of quality dining has been maintained. There has over the previous twelve months been yet another change of owners, but the quality of the offering and the service, has remained as good as it originally was in the 1970, this is a remarkable and commendable achievement. Finally worthy of a mention is the Bar Manager Carl, who has been in post for a very large part of the time we have been visiting, and naturally with the chefs and service staff must take great credit for delivering the consistency of these home made recipes. This in the hospitality World is a considerable and commendable achievement. We are looking forward to our next visit, now in our 80th year.

We stayed in Annie the shepherd's hut, what an amazing experience, we stayed 2 nights. It was a pure chill/relax time after 2 very difficult years. We can honestly say we chilled and relaxed. The hut is warm and we didn't use the log burner, we even had a window open during the night. The bed is sooooo comfortable and the quilt was to die for. The bed was more comfortable than some hotel beds we have slept on. Thank you for the lovely welcome basket, so thoughtful. We ate in the pub on Tuesday night always the welcome from Jayne and Miles was as friendly and warm as normal. The food as always was tasty, hot and delicious. Special thanks to Alice a real trooper and obviously a big part of the Butchers Arms team. See you soon, even though its a short drive from Swindon it was definitely money well spent. XX ❤❤

I'm sorry to say, that after reading great reviews and having high expectations of what to expect....the experience was a huge disappointment. 6 of us booked in for Sunday dinner at 2pm,which started well,to be honest....as we were given a choice of the main room or a table set up for 6,in a separate room. We opted for the separate room and took our seats accordingly. After awhile a man came through to take our drinks order and I went 1st....."a o% Guinness please" sorry we don't have that "but I do at my other pub" OK then "could I have an elderflower please" ...."sorry we don't have that" again was the reply OK...."could I have a lime & soda please"....."sorry can't do that due to the trigger on the mixer not working" was the reply. OK...."could I have a lager shandy please"....."sorry can't do that either came the now familiar reply! By this time,it was getting embarrassing in front of the other's waiting to order their drinks and exacerbated,on the point of dehydration....I ordered a tap water.....which along with a gin & flat tonic didn't have ice in. Then.....dinner arrived. I had ordered the 3 meat roast, pork, beef & chicken (£23.50) and my expectations were high....well sadly it wasn't to be. The 3 meat roast consisted of a slice of pork,a slice of beef and a chicken leg plonked on the top...how bizarre! The meal itself was only warm and not piping hot as I would have expected.....after the drinks fiasco,I didn't feel able to complain without drawing attention myself in front of the other members of our party at the table. Finally....the bill came and as well as charging us for £2 for a lime & soda which I couldn't have, an £18 plus service charge had been added to the bill. That was the final insult.....£18 service charge for what exactly?? No drinks of choice and a luke warm meal. I wanted to dispute the service charge but again....I didn't want to draw attention to myself and possibly put my other party members in an embarrassing situation. I would like it refunded to be honest, as another issue I encountered while there....no soap in the soap dispenser despite visiting the toilet at the start of our meal and then again an hour or so later after the meal. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't eat there again or recommend to others to do so either......maybe it was "just a bad day at the office" for the pub on the day of our visit, but then the service shouldn't have been added automatically,if all of the above had been taken in to consideration.

Delicious food, thoughtfully sourced and beautifully presented. Much thought has gone into every taste and texture. Good vegetarian choices. Pricier than we'd normally pay so we go here for our special occasions. Never disappointed. Highly recommended.

We visited last Sunday after walking the dogs in the village, which is so beautifull When we got to the pub we were welcomed to a lovely open fire, warm and cosy. I had a three mixed roast, which was cooked perfectly, and was so large it was hard to Finnish, great value for what I paid. Others had homemade lasagne obviously homemade, Salmon fishcakes full of Salmon bot potato with the best chips ever. We were all so full, but could not resist the puds, There Bannoffi pie was to die for, as was the home.ade apple crumble with custard. We will deffinatelly be back and enjoyed our visit.

Lovely traditional English inn. Quirky spacious rooms furnished with antique furniture, pub and restaurant downstairs. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast and dinner delicious, generous portions. And not expensive at all! So much so that we stayed there twice in February.

I live locally and walk past it regularly at different times, I seldom see it open! But my main problem with this pub is that IT NO LONGER ACCEPTS MONEY IN PAYMENT FOR ANYTHING! one can only pay by card in this place? A lovely little country pub, in the middle of nowhere, doing practically no business...decided it would go cash free. Fancy a pint and a soft drink, probably under a tenner...Sorry , WE DON'T TAKE CASH...You're a country pub on a side lane near Berkeley!! not harrods or a central London mega store...who's stupid idea was it to insult whatever little custom you had left with this stupid move? I just head for the Berkeley Arms now , where most of your other custom's gone...WHERE THEY TAKE ENGLISH MONEY IN AN ENGLISH COUNTRY PUB!

Visited the Carpenters Arms in Westrip, Stroud for Sunday lunch. I have been before but this place just gets better and better! The Sunday lunch was amazing and that goes for everything down to the sweetest parsnips if ever had. Warm welcome and great service. Good range of local real ale and ciders. Simon

We were looking forward to our visit here, but by the time we left, we wish we had gone elsewhere. The restaurant was freezing when we arrived, and we did put this down to the restaurant, having just opened. I did, however, eat my food with my coat on Being a vegetarian and it being Tuesday, my only option for a main was mushroom tacos. I don't like mushrooms, so I had to have some sides as my main. I think this needs to be reviewed. Halfway through our food, my husbands plates were then cleared away. Yes, he had finished his food but I was still eating. I find this rude. To top this off while eating, the staff stated talking about moving tables around in the quiet area we were sitting in. It felt as though we were in the way. While the food was tasty, the service and atmosphere weren't great. It's such a shame
