We was recommended this pub to take our brothers wake here after his funeral. When we booked here the lady that booked us in seemed really nice until the day that we went into the restaurant. We was greeted by a different lady. Who had the ump.the whole time we was there. When serving not once did she smile and seem to be rude when serving. The food was nice but the service was atrocious from the bar lady. This really upset me as it was my brother's wake and I have many people coming up to me saying about how rude she was. So I wouldn't recommend this place as awake they like to take your money and I should imagine they took a bit on that day but the service was terrible.

The pub ( the Nelson now) is fabulous! We went with friends for Saturday brunch it was excellent. A great welcome, staff were excellent very organised and friendly. The food was plentiful, well served and washed down with endless process I, coffee and tea. Muesli, berries, yoghurt and honey. Pastries with four choices, a menu to choose from a full English, breakfast baps, avocado on toast and much more, Toast. Delicious. There is a stunning garden, lovely seating perfect for the summer. They also run events from wine tasting, Christmas events etc. I so recommend this pub it’s a perfect English pub in a lovely village. We will be back.

We went to this pub unexpectedly for Sunday lunch. It’s was so good. The pub was busy both with food and without but despite this the staff were really friendly. The food arrived promptly and didn’t disappoint it was plentiful and yummie… the price point was just right… well done we will get back ….

Omg Sunday Lunch was lush. Good family meal, with individual cauli cheese each, and good portion sizes. Got vouchers from Price is Wight. Young waitress , sorry we didnt get your name, was excellent, and she's only been there 4 shifts. Our group mentioned her to the mamager/owner, and as we walked away I overheard her say well done, that's great, and only your 4th shift. Was good to see support to staff and encouragement. Will definitely be going again

Phenomenal chef’s table experience. I’ve always been a big fan of The Avenue, but since its recent revamp, this place has somehow found another gear. The new dining room is stunning, the service is impeccable, and I’m so glad they’ve retained top talent like Alberto, their sommelier, over the years. As for the food, I think it would be unfair to call Tom Hamblet a future star—he’s clearly already one. Without a doubt, the best young chef in the country. It’s been incredible to see his growth, from sharing his MasterChef-winning menu during his residency to maturing into a chef who truly understands his environment. At Lainston House, he has embraced the estate’s seasonal offerings, creating dishes that feel completely in tune with their surroundings. His cooking has always been exceptional, but now it’s refined, confident, and deeply connected to the ingredients at his fingertips.

For a variety of reasons I had not been to the Royal Oak for some time and went there for a drink with friends. I was horrified to see how the decor had deteriorated to such an extent it could only be described as shabby and well past the time that refurbishment should have taken place. The covering fabric on the benches was so dilapidated that in places it had disappeared the supporting fabric underneath was wearing out. The door to the ladies toilet, where it was being pushed to open it, had worn off to below the primer and looked grubby. I chose not to use the toilets for fear of what I might find. Greene King should be ashamed to put their sign above the door and improve the environment that the staff, who were cheerful and polite, have to work in representing the Company.

Absolutely terrible. Waited over half hour for our food, then to turn up cold. And tasted absolutely disgusting, we have all been home with poorly tummy's including my 4 young children. Will not be coming back or recommending this place to anyone.

We had a great 3 day stay, can't really fault the place at all. Had Dinner & breakfast here, absolutely spot on, good quality food without being overly fancy, decent portion sizes. Staff were all very pleasant & helpful. Rooms very clean and tidy and the bed was comfortable, but not a king-size though. Would be more than happy to stay here again.

Our first time here in many years but it didn't disappoint. We were made to feel so welcome from the moment we stepped inside to the moment we left. There were four of us and we like trying different venues to get out and about a bit. All of our food was exceptional, no-one was critical of any dish and we had a really enjoyable time. Thanks to the waiters and chef for a most enjoyable lunch, such a shame there weren't more people there to enjoy it. This place is so worth a visit and we will definitely return.
