Royal Oak in Test Valley

Lovely food and service, atmosphere is lovely, nice little restaurant for an evening meal! I had the lasagne which had lovely flavour and my partner had the hunters chicken. The service was nice and quick and we weren’t waiting long for food which i like!

Every time we cone here, the people are so friendly, the food is excellent, would recommend it to any one, thank you. We will definitely be back.

I visited the Royal Oak for a mid week lunch. The food was lovely! The chicken katsu was amazing and the eton mess sundae was delicious. Overall, the food portions were really generous while being really good value for money! What made the visit so enjoyable were the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. We were greeted upon arrival and throughout the meal Kate really looked after us making sure we had everything we needed. Even though the pub was really busy, nothing was a trouble for Kate ! Highly recommend. Look forward to my next visit!

I felt compelled to leave this review after having the worst steak I've ever eaten. My Mother, Brother, his girlfriend & myself stopped off for a meal after watching the BSB at Thruxton. When ordering my steak I was informed that they can't cook bleu steaks so would have to have it rare which didn't leave me hopeful of a good steak. My scinisism was eventually, after asking why it was taking so long for our food to be served, confirmed. My steak was approx 8mm thick & looked had a brown "juice" covering it & was well done. I couldn't eat it & after 2 mouthfuls it had put me off the rest of my meal. When a member of staff came round to clear our table, we were asked if we enjoyed our food to which I told them that I couldn't eat it because it was so bad. No refund or compensatory offer was made by the establishment. After this experience I/we will not be returning again.

Our local gem of a pub! The staff are second to none, always friendly and accommodating. The food is pub food but it doesn't disappoint. In over 15 years we have had no reason to complain. Jodi and Wanda are fantastic hosts and the staff are a real credit to them. Lovely village pub

Came for a nice Saturday lunch today with some family friends. The staff were accommodating, the food was lovely and the service was as best as could be. One of the girls working today- skylah and the other boy running around with dark hair were very friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be returning.

I always have the best time at the Royal Oak in Charlton. The staff are always warm and welcoming. The food is nice and warm. A big shout out to Cherie, and the team for always going above and beyond.

This is a beautiful country pub with a warm and homely atmosphere. The pub offers a great menu and lovely garden. Would highly recommend visiting!

We were told we were not allowed to book a table in the bar area, this was not something that they do…. only to arrive to find others had been allowed to book tables. The food took over an hour to arrive, but that’s sometimes one of those things. The toilets were dirty and the smell carried into the bar and eating areas. There were rats running around the beer garden too. It’s a shame, because I had hoped for a bit more from a small village green king.

This place used to be family friendly but has recently gone down hill. The service for food is late and if you bring kids to the beer garden, the management complain. Used to be my favourite pub in Andover but if my kids are not welcome during the day I will drink somewhere else.

Visited the Royal Oak last weekend for a meal with friends. We all commented at the end of the meal on how nice the food was and probably the best pub grub we have had for a long time. Have since been back with my partner and again had a nice meal, good service and reasonably priced.

Went with my husband, daughter, son in law and 3 year old grandson. They were providing a ‘kids eat free’ so we thought we’d take advantage. This pub is always welcoming and friendly, with a good atmosphere. The menu is typical of many pubs but what makes this one better is the standard of cooking and presentation. The chips were perfect, crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. Everything was served hot and perfectly cooked.

Went to lunch today with friends had wait for a hour for our lunch and 30 minutes for our pudding nice food and it's hot but no sorry for wait by the Royal Oak pub

Just had 6 Sunday lunches and literally sent back a plate full of inedible food. Cheap supermarket potatoes cooked in cheap old fat. Broccoli harder then pencils ! Came to the pub on Sunday afternoon with my family of 4. I was greeted by really friendly and accommodating staff members who went out of their way to fulfil our wants and needs. Food was delicious, the waitress’s were extremely friendly and did everything they could to make us feel comfortable. I was recommended the signature hunters chicken which was delicious but very fulling and my daughter got a free dessert with her Sunday roast. I will definitely be coming back here and I recommend it to anyone who is looking to have a decent pub lunch! Well done staff and well done to the mangers

We stopped here for dinner about a year ago and was so impressed I had to write a review. We decided to make another visit last night and nothing has changed. I don't know where they find the staff, but they are literally without fault. We were served by Allana (spelling!?) And she bent over backwards to make our visit enjoyable and couldn't do enough for us. She was great with my kids answering all their questions! 100% our favourite pub now so now restrictions are lifting will be visiting far more often. and we will be making a booking for the Christmas period.Thankyou.

Came out for dinner from far away family then to order a meal completely chicken based then to find out there is no chicken whatsoever I would not recommend coming here this had happened every time I’ve came here for the past 11 years it’s beyond a joke but staff did a great job sorting it out and suggesting alternatives just those who sort out food stocks who need a kicks up the rear

Although the food and drink here is always great and the staff, in the main, friendly and attentive, it is let down by their awful front of house ‘manager’. On 2 occasions this woman has been obnoxious, the first time telling my daughter to sit in her seat and not move around the OUTSIDE garden, like some over zealous covid marshal. Our most recent encounter she barked at us that we’d made an error on the table number when ordering our food via the app, because of some mixup her staff caused when serving food to the wrong table. Funny that we’d already been served drinks off the same order to the correct table 10 minutes earlier. When I proved her accusation was wrong, there was no apology, she just walked off. How can you point blank accuse your customers of making a mistake, be proved wrong, then simply walk away. Disgusting. Get her on a customer service course…. Or sack her, because she is letting your establishment down.

Had a very enjoyable meal last night at the Oak. Staff were great, tried new dish on the menu, Korean chicken burger was lovely, rest of family had good dinners too.Procedures in place to maintain everyone's safety meant we felt very relaxed and enjoyed the experience.

We went as a family around lunchtime today. The landlord was friendly and the team delivered an excellent service. The food was great and everything arrived quickly. Everything went in accordance with the covid guidance and was definitely pub safe. We will absolutely be returning for a meal and drinks soon.

Used to be a regular visitor here. Such a shame as used to be a lovely pub. Sadly over the years ha totally gone down hill. No personality what so ever with a lot of the staff. Some especially a young blonde lad just plain rude. I know we are in a pandemic but the other greene king pubs make you feel welcome, sadly not here. Maybe some customer service training is needed. Landlord also not friendly unless you are one of his pals. Probably one of the worst run greene king pubs in the area.

We made a booking online in the same day and when we arrived the parking was a little small but we managed.The waiting staff informed us they weren’t quite used to table service yet (usually order at the bar) but I think they were very polite and attentive! We ordered through the app but the staff always checked on us multiple times and nothing was too much trouble.Food was nice, service was quick.

We are a family of 5 (1 teenager and 2 small children) and we stumbled upon this pub on the way home and decided to have a meal out because it was getting late, so we had not booked a table. I was greeted in a friendly manner and offered various tables to suit our needs.Our waiter laughed and joked with my children and gave a swift, accurate and friendly service. He had the rare talent of allowing us to eat our meal in piece, but appearing almost immediately when we needed something! At no point was my pint glass empty, or any of us left trying to get a waiters attention.The food was fantastic, and was priced slightly less than what i would have expected for the quality.Cannot fault the place on any level, will definitely be going again and would recommend to everyone.

Last week we chose to eat in and the whole scenario was handled well by all the staff, food was good and service quick and staff very, very helpful. We will return. Booking on line is so easy for reserving tables or for ordering Take Away.We chose the Take Away menu last night - meant we could both have a glass of wine with meal. Really disappointed Contacted as unable to book table through website. Tried a few different ways. So called and was told couldn’t book as needed to book through website but advised there was definitely space for five. From call I went back to website for one last try and got in only to be told no spaces! Really disappointed

As a cycling club we visit every Saturday and the staff are fantastic especially Meghan Great coffee and great food a must visit

When our local cycling cafe closed down, we were at a loss as to where to go after our club rides. One visit to the Royal Oak, and we found a new home. They gave us a warm welcome, offered to suply a selection of cakes just for us, and we have never looked back. Great staff, always game for a laugh, and the best carrot cake in the world.

My friends and I often eat here for what we call a “cheeky cheap meal”. Food is good (only had one bad meal over a long time of visiting and cost was deducted off bill). Staff are attentive and the pub is always buzzing.

We came in for the rugby yesterday and the vibe was amazing, everyone was having fun but everyone well behaved and the team were firmly in control and happy, we will be back for the next one.

We love it here, came in and had the sausage and mash and it was superb, the kids all ate and had puddings and the wife loved her gammon! Tag friendly and place superb, may even pop back into the sports bar and watch the footy later! Great pub!

we booked a table for 5 for a meal on boxing day, the roast potatoes & vegetables were not fresh & the parsnips were almost burnt, cant say we were impressed, the desert was the only meal we enjoyed

I am truly amazing with how well run this place is and how great the team are, the place is like two separate pubs, with one section for drinkers and one for foodies and they both have there own relative fantastic atmosphere, and it’s incredible to see it in action! What a place!

We were let down at the last minute by a neighbouring pub - the Royal Oak were able to accommodate us with no notice - no mean feet with 9 adults and 3 children!

Tonight 14 of us had our Christmas meal at the Royal Oak in Charlton, Andover. You could not fault the service or the food. Everything was fresh and hot, all dietary requirements met. We will be booking our next get together there, thank you

7 of us dined here last night and had a brilliant evening. We had ordered the Festive menu so knew exactly what food we were eating. When we arrived at our table we saw a lovely pine centrepiece in the centre, plus crackers with choice of 2 types of glasses for wine or bubbles. We received a very friendly and pleasant greeting from the waiting staff and within minutes of the full party being seated our starters were served. Those of us who had ordered prawn cocktail were disappointed that it wasn't served with usual 1000 island dressing but after speaking to the waitress a different dressing was brought out. The fault was ours not theirs as we hadnt read the menu thoroughly.

Went there last night 29/11 even though it was busy and told there was a wait on the food the food was lovely and definitely worth the wait I will be back and I will also be recommending this place for food

Went here today for a family meal for the first time since may when the food I had was not great but told by friends that the chef then had gone. the lady behind the bar tanith was very helpful and a little bundle of joy and the food today I can't describe it was that good I will defo be returning

Popped in for a meal with with some friends and it was bloody fantastic, great deals on the food. The staff were really friendly and attentive, the atmosphere of the place was great. Dogs are allowed in the front of the pub too which is always a plus in my books. Deffo will be recommending to my friends!

A 45 minute wait for a drink to be greeted by ‘what?’ I proceeded to order and was ‘tutted’ at. Eventually after receiving an unlively Stella Artois in a glass that could only represent a stained glassed window I headed to the dart board, only 16’s and 17’s I could hit which turned my attention to hitting the respective members of this shambolic parade, the average that of a disused nursery. Will not reattend, poor service, atrocious feeling and outright pretentious, I’m out!

I attended the Royal Oak in charlton and I played a game of pool. Upon setting the balls up there was a ball missing...I asked the delightful woman behind the bar where it was and she said and I quote “I don’t care” and proceeded to moan to a colleague about someone enquiring of the location of said ball. Despicable behaviour would not recommend at all...foods alright though.

Use this pub regularly with friends. Food is always good and very good value. Staff very friendly but bar is sometimes understaffed meaning a wait for drinks.

Disappointing have been many times for Sunday lunch and was looking forward to roast beef which has always been excellent. One small miserable slice of beef roasties soggy undercooked veg and lumpy gravy. What’s happened definitely not up to its usual standard.
