Lovely pub. Excellent food. Recommend the fried squid, fish and chips and pork belly!

Fantastic food for Sunday Lunch on 9th March. Eventually!! Unfortunately we were waiting a long time to be served and our order was taken and then checked 3 times !!! Despite it being a simple Sunday Lunch order. Service was quite frankly appalling. We were sat in the " other " room as we had 2 dogs. We just felt forgotten. Despite asking, no water supplied for dogs and not asked if we wanted more drinks despite our long wait for food. The waitress told us that the service was slow because the restaurant was busy, just felt like it confirmed that we were sidelined. To add insult to injury a £17 Service charge was added to our bill too. Which we had to ask to be removed. We did leave a tip but could not justify the 10%. We absolutely love this pub, but will think twice about coming back. Please, Please look at your service. One of the waitresses hardly spoke . A smile costs nothing :0)

Our first visit was a delight! Just stumbled on the Rockingham as a half way point to meet friends and we had a great time. Really super lunch with fabulous food and very relaxed which we truly enjoyed. And then a very relaxed amble along the tracks beind the restaurant ... wonderful. Until next time, thank you all.

Do not recommend. We arrived for an early lunch on a Saturday with two children. We sat and were told all the tables were reserved (despite only handful having signs on them). They did find us a table then took a long time to bring a menu and take drinks order. When the food did arrive it was fine (very good children’s meal) but one of the sandwiches contained undercooked fried chicken. We were told it was just because of the thigh meat - this absolutely wasn’t the case. They did provide a replacement sandwich and took the other off the bill. Poor service and atmosphere with average food and very unwelcome to families (our children are well behaved - we don’t let them run around inside / shout etc). Won’t be returning.

Writing this review to try and get the message over that the Rockingham really needs to sort their act out !! Lovely pub with such potential!! Badly trained staff - poor food quality - I will not be calling to explain - sort yourselves out that’s all we ask.

Sunday lunch was amazing but sadly service was dire. We were asked 4 times for our order as somehow it was messed up . Then 45 minute wait for food without being told of a delay. We asked for water for dogs but it didn’t come. Nobody asked if we wanted more drinks, we had to catch someone when they eventually came our way and then we waited ages for the bill. 10% service charge was already added which sadly we had to ask to be removed as £17+ could not be justified. Such a shame, we love the Rockingham and its position for walking the dogs. Sorry guys, you need to up your service or we won’t be back.

A Saturday night meal for two that went down a treat. Previous Rock visit was not good but based on the latest visit they’ve definitely upped their game. The squid starter was one of the best I've eaten. Then Chicken Supreme and an unusual duck source spaghetti were excellent. Service was very good.

The staff were very polite and the we be only had fish cakes with a poached egg but it was delicious We look forward to a return visit

Went and spoke to someone on the bar and explained our situation, she came out and kindly offered for the food to be taken off the bill…. 5 minutes later, another waitress came out, with the plates of food and argued with us that she had just stood with the chef who probed the food, said she believed it was “to spec” and still had to pay for it as it was “expensive meals and ingredients”. We had to argue about the temperature of the food and all she had to say was “it is what it is, you still have to pay” even though at this point now, we hadn’t eaten anything Some time went past as we were finishing our drinks and another waitress came out with the card reader, and huffily said “the foods taken off, just drinks to pay”. We paid and she stomped back into the bar without another word being said. This level of disrespect towards us was uncalled for, and quite frankly we won’t ever be returning if that’s the way the staff are going to act and treat us

Walking group of ten people. Pre-ordered meals a few days before. Nice food and very friendly service. Could not fault.

This week we visited this pub with friends. It’s somewhere we’ve met before as it has a nice atmosphere and is in a lovely location. Two out of the party of four were very happy with their meals and one thought their fried chicken starter to be fatty. I ordered chicken supreme from the lunch menu but what I actually got was a chicken leg, which included bone, and not the boneless chicken breast in a creamy mushroom sauce that I was expecting. While the chicken leg was nice enough, I would never have ordered this. Two other reviews I’ve read since have commented on the chicken supreme not being a chicken supreme - perhaps it’s time for your lunch menu to be edited?

We were walking in the neighborhood and today wasn’t the nicest weather, so we decided to go in to warm up and have some brunch/lunch. The place opened up in front of us, there was absolutely no one, but no one inside, we were the first ones. Then someone from the bar told us that they can’t serve us because they’re fully booked and the kitchen was not ready for two extra people also no available tables... She wasn't nice at all... the place can be nice, if the staff is rude, I don't recommend it to anyone else, but we won't be coming back here either. Thank you 😐

Our lunch on 12th February was disappointing. One meal was very poor the chicken pie was full of slimy chicken skin and was not edible, we did not pay for this item however the experience spoiled the lunch for us all. It was our treat and I felt embarrassed that our guests had such a poor meal.

Great food and lovely service. The pub was quiet, but not surprising for a Monday night, which meant it was nice and relaxed.

Roast dinner. Lovely pub. Broccoli was rock hard and way too much gravy poured on my trio roast fpr me, the yorkshire went so soggy. Never thought I'd complain about too much gravy but just let the customer decide! Almost perfect. We'll priced for quality.

We were visiting the new forest with our dog and found this stunning pub through social media. Top rated roast and a great atmosphere. Will definitely be back again when we're next down

We were 5 meeting up for birthday doo at nearest halfway point between Bridport and Brighton. 1st time to this pub and far better than other pubs tried before. All 5 of us had excellent meals including starters and mains. Lovely pub and nice location. Definitely coming back again.

Saturday night. When they turn off the bar lights at 9.30 (tho they say it closes at 11) and the staff are checking their phones, doesn’t make you feel welcome, more like when are you leaving please?

We went to The Rockingham Arms after seeing a post on instagram, the Roast dinner was in my husbands words “the best ever” (no offence taken!). I will agree it was superb!

This used to be a really fantastic pub, but since its takeover it has deteriorated quite badly. The food is poor to average. The pub is dirty and everywhere needs a good clean. The service was fantastic but let down badly by poor quality food and food presentation.

The food was excellent and the staff so helpful, pleasant and accommodating. We have only marked down the atmosphere because of the strong smell of fish, we were late in the lunch service so not many people but were cheered to see a group just sitting on settees with tea/coffees chatting after a walk.

Lovely welcome and found us a great table despite no booking. Korean Chicken, Roast pumpkin salad and fish & chips were all superb. Highly recommended.

Our lunch was poor - it took 10 minutes before anyone came to our table, and our order took over 40 minutes - and the restaurant was not busy, My partner had the liver, and most of it was gristle and uneatable (although they did deduct the price of the dish from the bill). The staff spent most of their time behind the bar out of sight of our tables, and I had to go to the bar to ask for someone to take our order, later to ask where our meal was, and when it did come my meal was cold. Again to get served a dessert and get the bill it was no good waiting for staff to come, had to go to the bar to ask for it. Very very poor experience.

I brought friends for lunch last Saturday. I hadn't realized the Festive Meals were still being served and the staff were very busy. Our food was not of the standard I have previously enjoyed at the Rockingham. I felt it was thrown on the plate- a huge pile of creamed potato and of kale - no other vegetable. Disappointing.

We we stared at when we arrived . No smiley welcome. We ordered and waited an hour for our food. Food was good but restaurant was cold . No log fires even laid, and certainly not lit. Th rockingham arms has gone downhill since the previous owner left

We enjoyed a really excellent family lunch on New Years Eve. Food all delicious and staff extremely accommodating and helpful. Will hope to be able to return again when in the area. A truly English pub with a relaxed atmosphere. Thank you

Visited Christmas Day. Long wait between starter and main, which we understood you were busy. Gravy was too salty , apart from this the food was really good. Appreciated that we were provided a box to take our food home.

Went for a rare quiet lunch just my husband and I, and it did not disappoint! Food was superb, service great and wonderful to find somewhere that felt comfortable and a bit special that we could take our dog. We had a fairly long wait between starters and mains which we actually relished, it was nice not to feel rushed and just enjoy the atmosphere and rest! We would definitely return!

We were recommended by a customer to try the Rockingham Arms, we had friends staying who like us enjoy a good meal in good surroundings. Having taken the gamble we weren’t disappointed. From the welcome when we arrived from the barman to the greetings for each of the waiting staff we were made to feel that they were pleased to see us. The food was fantastic and as foodies this was very important. I have lactose intolerance and asked if I could possibly eat a couple dishes, the young lady returned form asking the chef to tell me he would cook them with vegan butter and change a couple of key ingredient's enabling me to eat normal food out. I find it very hard to eat out because of my dietary restrictions. We will be using the pub again very soon. I can’t thank them enough and would recommend anyone looking for a venue to give them a try.

We had our company Christmas lunch at Rockingham Arms on 27 November. The staff were very attentive, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was very festive. Everyone really enjoyed themselves.

Read the reviews after booking and we're very close to cancelling the booking due to the negative comments. I'm so glad that we didn't. The service and the food was wonderful. We will all be back.

Potatoes were so over cooked they were hard, the portion of beef was awful, tiny slices of very rare and hard to cut through as it was not cooked.

We were passing through, first visited Stonehenge and then went to eat there. Absolutely brilliant, friendly staff, brilliant food and great beer, would come back in a heartbeat if it were closer to Switzerland. ;)

The food was exceptional, great service , great staff oh and great food . We shall be back. Had a Sunday lunch here a few years ago and it was always on our list to return ,so we did . A wet Monday and a sandwhich for lunch , the place was busy and the food was excellent . Tastiest sandwhich we have had for a long time .

Sunday Lunch was outstanding. Perfectly pink Roast Beef ranked favourably against the best in the area. Price was competitive with venues we rate. Service was good and venue was comfortable.

Utter disappointment from The Rockingham. After being recommended to visit here, we were appalled by the terrible service we received from our given waitress. My family and I visited on the 24th October 2024, the last night of our holiday in the New Forest, we'd booked a table for 5:30pm and arrived promptly on time, the restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived and we were shown to our table, this is were we sat for quite some time without anyone bothering to come to us, eventually a waitress arrived with four sheets of A4 paper, which turned out to be the menus, these were dated with the day befores date on them, I took a glance and saw no children's menu listed on there (we were with our 8 and 12 year olds) I asked for the children's menu and was told, there wasn't one, but the waitress would simply tell us what was on offer (we had previously gone onto the Rockingham website to check the menus, to ensure there was something suitable for us and the children) the waitress then told us a few options, nothing like the variety on the websites children's menu. I then asked about the children's chicken salad, which my daughter wanted, the waitress told me that wasn't an option, but my child could order it off the adults menu and pay full price! I asked her why if its on the main menu isn't it available on the children's menu, she then said she'd have to check with the chef. Several minutes later she returned and said ok, they would do the children's salad. We then asked about the steak and wine offering, that was advertised on their chalkboard specials as you entered the restaurant, we were then told that wasn't available either, even though it was dated for the day we were there! We then said, can we please clarify that you've given us the correct menus, as these are dated for the day before and there seems to be a lot of issues with the menus and offering right now!? she had no clue, had a shocking attitude and it felt like she was doing us a favour simply being there, she then disappeared after saying she'd need to check the menus and literally left us at the table never to return. After another 10 mins of just sitting there we had to flag down another waitress to find out what on earth was going on, I was ready to walk out and leave but our children were so hungry and this second waitress really did try and help, so we reluctantly stayed. We finally ordered drinks and our food, one drink never arrived and we had to chase, food arrived, it was pleasant but that was the only part of our evening that was, we will NEVER return to this restaurant and I strongly suggest management speak with the blonde waitress with the foreign accent to either offer some re-training or perhaps suggest to her that a non customer facing role would better suit.

Very nice lunch with plenty of choice and reasonable prices, I chose the chicken pie with fat chips, big portions, I could not eat all of it.

We visit the Rockingham arms 5 times a year as a party of 6 family members who meet for special occasions. The last visit was Saturday 12th October. We had great food. (Mainly the pie) and good service too. The only thing we gave noticed since the pub was taken over by RedCat is the standard of the toilets. (I'm sure it's not the staff members fault and probably due to time restrictions) but previously the ladies toilet had a lovely clean condition and smelt beautiful of the products from the shop within the pub. It is very noticeable that cleaning standards have declined. A yellow hazard sign was in place on our visit. It would not take much to clean up and decorate a little..it would make all the difference.

Fantastic country pub - limited vegan options but not wholly surprising. Food was delicious, great drinks selection and fabulous walking location.

This used to be a busy pub, with great food, nice beer, great service etc… but something has changed. Almost empty on a Friday night, and we waited over an hour for our starters and there was mould in the water bottles (both fizzy and still bottles had black mouldy things stuck to the insides). Big shame. We used to go very regularly for years; won’t be going back.

we love the Rockingham Arms and meet here regularly because it is half way between Sussex and Somerset where we each live. We know we will always get a delicious lunch with lovely friendly service and they never chuck us out when we stay chatting for hours

Once again another yummy meal here with friends. Pub has such a great ambience and nestling into armchairs after lunch is wonderful. Staff are really professional and friendly - nothing is too much trouble. Very dog friendly too.

The Roast Pork Belly and the Sirloin Roast dinners were lovely and good portion sizes. We also had the extra Cauliflower Cheese which was lovely. If I'm being picky, the roast potatoes could've been cooked more but I guess that may be just a preference thing.

Great place to catch up with ex colleagues for lunch. As I’m on my lunch hour the staff are really helpful and speed up our order a bit.

Good food and professional, attentive staff. The lamb and chorizo pie was fabulous and there is a 2 or 3 course fixed price menu at lunchtime.

August 2024 visit … evening x 4 New ownership? Enjoyed our food but seemed tight on staff? 2 individuals? Responsible for both waiting on tables and running the bar? A couple of mistakes as a consequence. Settling in maybe? Need more staff ?? Visited for lunch, two of us and the dog 🐶. Very dog 🐶 friendly. Taking the approach ‘choose something you don’t get at home’ I chose the liver… it was pink, it was excellent. Washed down nicely with a pint 🍺 of Romsey Gold. Jane (getting married in December) was very friendly, professional and attentive … and looked after the dog 🐶. By prior arrangement parked up early for a walk on Canada 🍁 Common. Strongly recommend 👍 December visit…. Remain impressed 🎄👍

All of us enjoyed our dinners below: The service by Olivia was tremendous, with smiles, and extremely helpful. 1x Beetroot gnocchi, Engtish asparagus. SunBlush tomatoes, pine nuts, crumbled artisan cheese, olive oil (ve) as a main 17.50. 1x Slow-cooked lamb Provençale, Jersey Royals, chargrilled courgettes & peppers. confit vine cherry tomatoes, jus (gf) 15.95 2x Prime beef rib burger, chorizo, piperade, burger cheese, aioli, baby gem lettuce, tomato, brioche bun 15.95 Plus drinks…

Busy and popular pub. Our food was tasty and it is a great halfway spot to meet our friends. The staff were super friendly and my gf/df diet catered for. We would definitely come back.

Limited menu with the food of very average quality and quantity. Service was a bit dour and atmosphere was acceptable but no more. Unlikely I will be returning.

The ambience is still there and the staff friendly but the food was a big let down. Yorkshire pudding dry and inedible. Gravy cold. Roast potatoes were over cooked new potatoes. Leeks were missing. Beef over seasoned. Beet tasted of cleaning fluid so s real did of a meal. Q. Who checks the food leaving the kitchen? Won't be back.

I’ve been meeting up with friends for quite few years at your pub.i wasn’t impressed on Wednesday as we waited 20 mins to be asked if we wanted a drink.boiling hot day too ! We then ordered a light lunch which took 40 minutes to arrive for a beetroot gnocchi salad and a chicken salad both tbh very very mediocre and that’s being kind. Didn’t bother with pudding as thought it’d be the same. The pub was not busy so I would have thought a better service. Very dull menu just don’t think we will bother again…

We have been going to the Rockingham for at least the last eight years. It was our goto place for a great meal and service. In fact in the last couple of years it was the only restaurant we went to. We’ve been a few times since it recently changed hands and each time it’s been a little more disappointing. Thursday evening was probably the last visit we will make. My husband loved the pie and would order it most times, as he did on Thursday. Unfortunately it was virtually inedible. It was so salty. I like salt but it was even too salty for me. The vegetables were raw and tasteless. I have a garlic allergy and, at the waitresses suggestion, I swapped some linguine for potato but that also had garlic in it. Both plates, for us, were inedible. I had sea bream which I have to say was very nice but one small fillet of sea bream does not make a meal. Our meal was taken off the bill, so we just paid our bar bill which was very good of them and why we’ve given them two stars instead of one. The other disappointment was the gin selection. There was always a good selection of London dry gins on the shelf but there were only three or four run-of-the-mill gins eg Gordon’s, Bombay Sapphire, Tangqueray and then a selection of fruit gins. Not everyone likes fruit gins. I used to love trying the new London Dry gins they got in. The wine list was also not as good as it used to be. On top of that the beautiful shop the previous owner had built up is no longer. Such a loss. Such a shame.

Such a lovely experience! Kind and expert staff who helped us with my fathers deafness by moving us to a quiet room so that he could hear us all! They were very knowledgeable and pleasant and the food was good and tasty. We will definitely come back!

What a hidden gem the Rockingham arms is. We found it by chance while holidaying in the forest. On arrival we were greeted by the friendly staff and our bullmastiff dog Kaos was made very welcome. When it came to the food, what a surprise, it was fantastic. Well presented and the taste was fantastic. We will make this our regular stop in the new forest from now on.

I have been to the Rockingham Arms several times, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere, and candles on the tables etc. On this occasion we had to wait some time on arrival before anyone made an appearance behind the bar, even though it was past noon. We were shown to a table and given menus which were tatty and stained, they should have been discarded and replaced with freshly printed ones, it gave a very bad impression. My chair was uncomfortable as the seat had sunk, so I swapped it for another one which was extremely wonky, but third time lucky to get a comfortable one! There were pepper mills on the table with pink peppercorns in them which was a nice idea, but they did not work at all. I had the Pie of the day which was nice but very salty.

Really gorgeous place. Light but cosy. Lovely friendly staff, efficient service, and great tasting food. I’d highly recommend a visit if you’re in the area.

My partner, me and our dog recently visited the Rockingham Arms whilst we were away on holiday in the area. We were celebrating my partner’s 50th birthday together and the visit didn’t disappoint. The booking online was very easy and straightforward - clearly showed dog friendly areas for dining, timings etc. The staff were politely on our arrival and we were shown to our table immediately, which was perfect because our dog had room to have his bed down in the corner of the room so he could settle with his treats and toy. The waiter went through the menu and answered questions regarding any dietary requirements. Our drinks came quickly each time we ordered them. Our food order was taken once our drinks arrived and the food was lovely. As we were celebrating we may have had a little too much, but it was all really tasty. The steak and ale pie was incredible, the only slight let down was that the additional gravy for the mash and veg was a tad thick (big lumps) and salty, which once all over was a little late to find out. Other than this all the food was amazing. My partner and I both agreed it was the best chicken liver parfait we have ever had. We would definitely recommend this venue to friends and family staying in the area (and anyone reading this review).

I booked Rockingham Arms for my granddaughters 10 birthday. She had been before with us and liked it. I booked it on the phone and asked them if they could maybe do something for her maybe a piece of cake with a candle in . The man did say oh we make a fuss of the birthday girl . Asked how to spell her name for a card for her . Well service was terrible and no one knew about my granddaughter birthday . I asked the waitress about her card and if she was getting a cake and candle . She did in the end but why did we have to ask three members of staff about it . I felt very let down. Will not be going again .

We had a Sunday lunch for 8 and everyone agreed it was the best Sunday lunch they had had. The roast lamb was scrumptious and the service impeccable. Well done Rockingham team.

Always so good. Great staff and lovely food(.I would advise booking on a Sunday.).One of our favourite places . Take a walk on the common and enjoy their great hospitality afterwards

Firstly, the Hut was filthy, the seats, table, floor and cushions. Secondly, when one of our dishes was being brought to us, the contents slipped onto the table and floor beside us. Thirdly, the open steak sandwiches only had 2 or 3 small bits of meat, covered in mushrooms on burnt sourdough bread for £13.95. The manager kindly gave us a reduction in our bill. We have visited the Rockingham Arms regularly and the last time was disappointing, so we decided to give them a second chance. Sadly this time was worse so we will not be visiting there again.

Read all the wonderful reviews and was looking forward to a lovely meal, unfortunately we were really disappointed. I have to say the staff were great, friendly and welcoming, but.... My Guinness came up with a massive head. OK I can live with that and it was a nice pint. Then we ordered food. Apparently the kitchen closes at 8 and it was 7.30. My wife ordered belly of pork and I went for my favourite, sirloin steak medium rare. The sauce on the pork was laced with salt and the crackling was so over seasoned it was inedible. My steak came up well done and I mean really well done.. To be fair, the young lady that served us did offer to change everything and was super apologetic but we were so embarrassed, complaining about everything we decided to try and eat it.. We couldn't do it tho, we had to leave most of it. Again to be fair, they removed the cost of my steak and offered free desserts, but we just wanted to leave by then. Really sorry to leave your first 1 star but it was awful.

Family and I are locals and often walk down to the rock. We went for lunch yesterday which was disappointingly average. The burger and chips were bland, and the portion size small; a simple garnish to brighten up the plate would have been nice. I had hoped to give the feeedback in person, but we weren’t asked how our food was when the plates were cleared. The food doesn’t quite match the ambience of the pub which is a shame. To end on a positive the staff are really friendly and presentable. We’ll be sticking to just drinks for a while.

Lovely country pub with tasteful decor and clean facilities. Pleasant and efficient front-of-house staff. The set price lunch (2 courses £19, 3 courses £24) was such good value for an impressive, well-presented and tasty menu. The portions were so generous, not like the smaller versions normally offered for set menus elsewhere. What a refreshing change from being ripped off at other eateries. I had Beetroot Gnocchi with asparagus, pine nuts, roasted tomatoes etc, fantastic battered fish and home-cooked triple chips etc and the most delicious Strawberry Cheesecake with meringue, Strawberry jelly and gorgeous Strawberry ice cream. My partner had Asian Soup followed by Steak & Mushroom Pie with garlic mash, roasted carrots and spring greens. Based on this meal, we will definitely be visiting again!

Loved our visit. Food was beautifull.

Staff were friendly and atmosphere was nice. Having seen pictures of the roasts in other reviews, I went for the pork option at £18.25. Menu states carrots - there was half a carrot. Menu also states crackling - there was no crackling. There were 2 potatoes and two thin slices of pork. If there were more veggies and the dish matched the menu then that would be better.
