Four of us went to a local art exhibition and then for a wander round Romsey on a lovely sunny Bank Holiday and popped in here for lunch on a whim. I've not eaten here before - everything was perfect, needless to say I will definitely return! A very classy establishment, we went for the lunchtime bar menu and ate outside in the courtyard. I've absolutely no complaints about my shredded beef wrap and triple cooked chips washed down with 1/2 pint of Flack's Double Drop (one of my favourite real ales and brewed in Romsey) - all of which came to £17.70.Lovely decor, excellent facilities (I am reliably informed by Mrs PVilly that the ladies loo merits a 10/10 and she also liked the wallpaper!), and the service was spot on.

Had my birthday tea here with family and friends. Fabulous choice of free flowing teas and coffees, and delicious sandwiches and cakes. One of my friends is gluten intolerant and the waiting staff did not bat an eyelid but delivered a fantastic selection wheat free sandwiches and cakes, although we had neglected to forewarn them. The entire waiting staff are very welcoming and professional, and really could not be more helpful. Highly recommend for an afternoon treat.

We visited the White Horse for a business lunch of 16 people in the delightfully old, oak-beamed, private restaurant. The service was quick and came all together and the food hot with ample portions. The second course and coffee came without delay so the whole event wasn't drawn out unneccesarily. The hotel provided a projector and screen for an after-lunch presentation.

The food, OMG the food, I could literally say nothing about anything else but the food and that would be enough, it was absolutely incredible, amazing, so much flavour, fresh, looked fantastic on the plate but even better once you'd taken a bite, this is a definite must place to visit.

First time here I've visited. Easily found, clean, lovely decor, friendly staff, breakfast was really nice (English Breakfast), but there were other options. Really liked the place and would definitely visit again without hesitation. Only downside was that there was no actual parking available at the venue, but if you park round the back by the superstore entrance, there's a big car park, inexpensive to park and an easy 10 minute walk from the venue. The venue is right on the market square and I visited on a Saturday just before Christmas, so had a lovely walk round the market afterwards, which was an added bonus.

Afternoon tea? Think again. (Try the 'Kimbridge Barn' at Kimbridge, Romsey.) Inattentive staff. Table not cleared, tea cold, scones like rocks. The manager, Paul Ingham, was rude and dismissive, refusing to acknowledge failings. However, one of the receptionists actually called me the following day to apologise for the bad service, suggesting that I lodge a complaint. Never again will my family and friends set foot in this hotel. No wonder the hotel is going through tough times:

My friend and I have been on a mission to find the best triple-cooked chips in our locality .....and we have found them here!!! Over the moon with that discovery ....and then wowed by the diverse and interesting menu using locally sourced ingredients!! Food was beautifully cooked and presented. The flavours were sublime .....I tried the trout which was pan fried to perfection. My friend had the White Horse Salad ....and was equally impressed with the flavours on the plate. We were very well looked after by waitress Chelsea who very subtly looked after our every need ....we didn’t have to ask for anything and she kept our water bottle replenished throughout our meal. Very good value for money too. Lovely surroundings and ambience ....thank you to the whole team ....can’t wait to return.

Went for our daughters 18th. Went in and spoke to the receptionist on the day, to see if they could do a round table, it makes it more sociable for our family of 8. They were afraid their round tables were too small for that. Not too worry I thought.Turned up in the evening and they had put 4 small tables together, fantastic. This is what I’m on about, proactive. The food was amazing but that really goes without saying here. The staff are so attentive but not intrusive. They are very knowledgeable, we didn’t have to say anything all evening to them, they are intuitive. They bought out a very special tray for our daughter and sang happy birthday, tastefully

Expert, attentive service with a large variety of menu options, a good wine list and an outstanding whisky and scotch selection in the cozy bar. Each of our starters was well prepared and delicious. As were the pork, trout and chicken. Dessert was a perfect ending. Price and value seemed good although I don’t have a feel for the Pound Sterling and can’t yet judge. I have written a review in the hotel section, but it was the restaurant we ate in for a family evening out before my sons wedding. The barman was slow and rude, ignoring my partner for at least 5 minutes when there was no one else in the bar, whilst he made a cocktail and chatted to a waitress behind the bar. Not even a " sorry sir I'll be with you in minute" - incredible. We waited ages to go to our table, the food was lovely but was very slow to arrive, the place wasn't busy at all, they had loads of staff. My son works in the luxury hospitality industry and was beside himself with the poor customer service - which. let;s face, it costs nothing and goes such a long way. An expensive restaurant - good food, but really poor service given the cost. Real shame as would be a lovely spot if they got the whole package right. The poor service really took the edge off our family party - not really what you want the night before a wedding.

A group of us had lunch at the White Horse. On the positive side, the hotel is attractive and the ambience is good but the restaurant menu is nouvelle cuisine gone mad! I had fish: a tiny piece of hake on a small bed of mushy peas with (I think) 3 small crisps. Pork dish was similarly tiny. We looked enviously at the pasta which seemed more suited to a normal appetite. I wouldn't usually have a pudding but chose ice cream. I struck lucky because the rhubarb crumble and custard others hoped would fill them up came deconstructed into 3 tiny morsels. There was an unusually generous bread board which I assume is to cheaply feed hungry diners.

Again good staff and professional service. There was a very sound menu which would cater for all tastes. One of our party is gluten intolerant so the chef prepared a special meal for her. The Brasserie at the White Horse continues to justify its Two Rosette status. We both opted for the Tomato with whipped goat curd and chilled consommé starter partly out of curiosity. It proved a great choice- two simple flavours but delicately blended and brought together by the consommé. Superb!Venison loin to follow, with Seared trout for my wife, were both good. As on our previous visits, the White Horse’s excellent selection of wines by the glass was a great bonus – my Rioja would have killed the trout. We both finished with the Dark Chocolate Delice – enough to turn anyone into a “chocoholic” and a fitting end to a delightful meal.

I was going to the white horse with family for a birthday celebration but as a vegan I was a bit worried about the food I'd be able to eat. After contacting the white horse they replied with a menu constructed by the chef that was completely vegan. This is the most effort that any restaurant has ever shown with regards to my vegan diet. My grandmother who was with us has coeliacs disease and there are many options for her to choose from so I think the restaurant has a good grasp of dietary restrictions. I felt completely confident that all the food I was receiving was vegan. All of the servers were aware that I was having the different menu and I didn't have to have to explain anything throughout the meal. They even prepared me an extra amuse bouche and bread board without butter. Super accommodating!!! Above all this the food was delicious and reasonably priced, much cheaper than the other meals. I'd definitely recommend them and return.

I have been visiting The White Horse for many years now, and it really is my favourite place anywhere for afternoon tea. I took my friend there today for a birthday treat, and saw that the price had gone up and also they now bring sandwiches separately, rather than on the stand with the cakes and pastries. They have replaced salmon with trout, and I had asked for no fish, and no egg sandwiches. They have taken off the cheese option, and replaced those with "plain" cucumber. Not being a lover of cucumber, we asked if we could have cheese and they were happy to oblige. When the cakes arrived, on a lovely stand, they were better than they have ever been, absolutely delicious, and a great selection. I was a little worried they had changed everything and it would not be as good, but it was! Staff great and polite as usual. Cannot wait to go back.

Food was good on the whole, not amazing but fine. My steak wasn't cooked as requested but still edible, the rest of the party thought their food was a tad bland but still okay. The venison was apparently very good. The service was my main issue, the gentlemen seemed over tired, bored and looked like they wanted to be anywhere but there. They stood around and watched whilst the young women did all of the work. There were 6 members of staff in the brasserie, yet it took 15 mins for a bottle of wine to arrive... so a lack of urgency I think! Perhaps they were all very tired but it's not too much effort to smile and act interested, rather than like a polite robot. This restaurant was far better when we visited 3 years ago!

When we wanted to go out to lunch to celebrate a wedding anniversary, having considered many of the other restaurants in Romsey, we decided on The White Horse; it's always been good for us and didn't let us down again. The White Horse is a case of getting what you pay for. It's not cheap, but when you've sampled the ambiance and food it's quite clear why it is costing more than other places in town - it's special occasion place rather than a 'let's go out to get something to eat' place. The decor is tasteful, the service is very good and the food is good value for what you get. Another recent review mentioned the portion sizes aren't enormous, and this is true, but for two people with healthy appetites a main and sweet course left us full without being bloated. Another very unhurried and pleasant meal, we're more than happy to try other local restaurants but I'd imagine we'll be back again to The White Horse before too long

They were professional and friendly from start to finish and are a credit to the hotel. The food was delicious, all three courses, and such attention to detail and precision was given that the chef wasn't happy sending my wife's chocolate fondant as it wasn't good enough that they cooked another one which was perfect! The star of my meal was the venison main course which came with a delicious beetroot puree! We will definitely return and have already recommend this restaurant to our family to try!

I visited the white horse for a belated birthday meal with my parents and husband. I have always wanted to eat at the white horse, but as it is a little more pricey than some places, had been waiting for a special occasion. Two of the party had starters, which were small. I has the crispy lamb belly, which was in no way crispy at all, it was in fact fatty. Onto the main meals, I had the pork cutlet, when this came it was large, I cut it off the bone, and it was pink / raw and also had some blood, I sent this back, it was re cooked and I fairness it did taste good, although was a little disappointed as the rest of the party had finished eating when it came back. The other 3 in the party all had fish and chips, the chips were large and a little over cooked, the fish batter was a little pale in colour and the peas didn’t have a lot of taste. The wine was lovely and the service was also fantastic. Due to the issue with the pork chop, I got a little free dessert platter, that said happy birthday, this was a lovely touch. Not sure given the price, I would return, as left feeling very disappointed.

Came here for an evening meal with my family. The setting and decor is very attractive and most of the food was good. Our table had two chicken meals, steak and fish and chips which were all good but for the price, we would have expected more. The chocolate fondants we had for dessert had very little taste to them, and the service questionable - we were looked after but the staff didn't seem particularly friendly or welcoming, and one waiter was wandering around the dining area many times with his mouth full of food. Overall would return but not in a hurry, definite room for improvement given the high price tag.

Most of the food was 'five stars' but my rib-eye wasn't - I ordered it rare, but it was just limp. My wife's cod loin on beef cheek just seemed I muddled. However, my brothers shared a chateaubriand which was perfect. The nuts, and vegan issues were very well managed indeed - no fuss at all.We returned for breakfast and although it was great, it took an age to appear. Stayed this summer and although the staff seem friendly, they don't seem happy in their jobs! Accommodation was good, food was 50/50 dinner ok breakfast great. Rushed out of the bar at the end of the evening and again if you enjoyed your job...... Think they knees to think about job satisfaction as the staff were nice but not happy !!

What is happening to the White Horse? We've been eating, drinking and celebrating here for the best part of 20 years but with two experiences of really poor service in the last month we are wondering if something has changed. We called in at the end of a Saturday afternoon. On both occasions we ordered tea and tea cakes for two in the bar. Not the most complex request and the tea arrived promptly, nicely served. But a wait on both occasions of nearly thirty minutes for the tea cakes surely means there is some breakdown in basic service. There was no acknowledgement by waiting staff that there was a problem until we raised it with them. The tea cakes were good when they arrived, if a bit over done, and the price was reasonable. But the service, oh dear.......

Excellent food and service. Attentive staff who even found time to help amuse my 9 month old grandson despite being very busy.

The interior is surprisingly upmarket, a high end country-style design that belies the market town pub exterior. The staff were all uniformed, adding to the smart atmosphere. The dining room is quite tightly seated, but large mirrors and French Windows make it light and airy. The menu offered choices well beyond just the usual roast. The roast beef was actually the weakest of the dishes, all else was very good, especially the cod and the ham hock starter. Recommended.

The team couldn't do enough for us. The food we chose was simple and delicious - tapas style starters followed by the best fish n chips. We would really recommend this as a special experience. So attentive. Reasonable prices too. Really made us feel like VIPS.

We, being a group of 4 adults, found ourselves in Romsey with it being the closest town to our overnight stay in a hotel. It was my birthday and despite this we hadn't made any reservations for dinner. We stumbled across this restaurant and the menu pulled us inside. Once we had gone inside we also loved the look of the place which filled us with confidence. The service was spot on, quietly attentive and on hand whenever needed. good knowledge of the menu as all of our questions regarding the food were answered well. We like eating good food but dislike stuffy pretentious restaurants and I would say that this place gets the balance just right - it feels special enough to celebrate a special occasion but not so pretentious that you feel on edge. The food was phenomenal and is a meal we will remember for a long time. We eat out a lot and so feel that this is an honest and educated review of the food. Yes, it is fairly pricey but if you are celebrating a special occasion then I see no problem with this. You get what you pay for and the food did not disappoint. I had roasted venison followed by the best chocolate fondant I have ever consumed! I liked that our server informed us the fondant would take 12 minutes to arrive due to it being cooked to order. After dinner cocktails were also lovely with a good, well priced, wine list on offer too.Lovely atmosphere, great food and a birthday dinner to remember.

Really lovely evening here, the food was excellent, locally sourced, not too big, not too small. It is not the cheapest, but reasonable value for the excellent quality. The service was superb, attentive and relaxed, my feeling was this was well judged as what we preferred, rather than a default setting. We very much enjoyed the conversation and the recommendation to try home made pizza blanca and the positives of red meat and vegetables that came from our discussions with the waiter.... But others may not have done and I believe that the engagement was a well executed judgement call from a professional who read the situation well, while at all times providing excellent service; I don't think you can ask for more than that on top of well prepared local produce. We will be back.

The food was excellent, well presented. The staff were very good and there if you needed anything. Whilst not cheap it was worth it and we would go back.

Booked for an anniversary meal. We had a lovely quite table. Service was exceptional from the moment we arrived. We had just the right of time between course to eat and let that go down, we were checked on regularly but not too regularly. The staff were friendly, but were aware we wanted some time alone. The food was amazing. I am a great critic ( like many, I'm sure). But the food really took some beating. Flavours were clear and fresh. Meat beautifully cooked. Sensible portion sizes, although this is clearly a fine dining, 'pretty presentation' style restaurant, the portions did not leave you wishing for more on your plate. We were spoilt a the end with a chocolate brownie with happy anniversary written on a plate in chocolate sauce. Cheesy but still much appreciated!..

We were fitted in last minute but there was no pressure to get us out. The menu is simple - we had steak and fish & chips. The rib eye came with 28 and 35-day mature options - the 35 day will cost £10 more but was very good. The triple-cooked chips were great as well - however, the menu is expensive for what it is. £36 for a steak is a lot, when it only comes with chips and a tomato. That said, it was very nice. So were the fish & chips. The staff were good and the restaurant itself is very well presented and suitable for all special occasions. The bar is well stocked, with good varieties of gin and whiskey. All in, we enjoyed ourselves and imagine that Romsey is a better place for it.

As we were a large group being on a very special even we had 2 sittings. We had ordered our meals before getting to the restaurant which I think made easier for all of us. What a fantastic surpise, I ordered the ribs, when the came out I was utterly gobsmacked, as if I had ordered the entire pig! huge ... didn't complain as I tucked in as did my husband and friends. My husband had ordered the pie, which he said was excellent.Chips, veg all very good, service exceptional.Dessert was simple for me, I settled on ice cream as love the local brand. Thick, rich and creamy. As I said we were a large group, I don't think we had one bad dish, not one complaint. We did have bottles of wine, jugs of water on our tables. From the fish which my neighbour diner had, my ribs, the pie, the steak we bunch of picky eaters loved it.Well done to the staff, to our organisers as well.

A value-for-money afternoon tea! Attentive but not intrusive staff, a flexible approach (our tea had been laid indoors but they were happy to switch to outdoors as it was a hot, sunny day) and a delicious and attractive tea. The home-made lemon curd is well worth trying on their warm scones! Ample in quantity and the offer of a 'doggy bag' when we were unable to eat any more! A definite re-visit planned!

Potatoes were so over cooked they were hard, the portion of beef was awful, tiny slices of very rare and hard to cut through as it was not cooked.

The hotel has no AC in the rooms, and actually they have no running ventilation in the sleeping area, just the bathroom. Speaking of area, the area around the hotel is tragic. On the plus side the pizza is delicious and the drafted beer is cold and cheap. Parking is free. The mood and the competence of the crew varies a lot.

Lovely pub, nice food and friendly staff. Large car park. You can order using the app, but it needs improvement.

I was really looking forward to eating here and I had heard really good things. I would love to give a good review but never got past the front door! Staying at the hotel nearby and advised food provided at the Moldy Fig. Went in, and no one around, and it looked closed. Waited for a few minutes to see if anyone showed. After a bit, some turned up but was not interested in seeing if I needed assistance and hurried into the back office, giving no acknowledgement. Hopefully, this is a one-off and just bad timings. UPDATE. So breakfast was a lot better, hot food ordered to your table and a good choice of other foods. The service was very good. I have raised some scores to reflect this.
