We went for a Sunday lunch. Lovely small English pub on the side of the small country road, next to a church. It has a large garden at the back with outdoor seating. It was a perfect May day with a slight cool breeze, but the sun was shinning between the clouds. We had the prawn starter which was excellent. For mains my husband had the beef and I had the fish. The beef was cut very thinly and completely masked in sauce. All delicious but meat was a little scarce. We had a chocolate pudding and 2 coffees and 2 glasses of Sauvignon blanc wine to wash it all down. This is a family establishment which we like to support, it has been there for many years. The elderly gentleman at the counter is the father and the establishment is now run by his daughter. The young staff serving us are fabulous. All in all, a nice place for a drink or Sunday lunch.

Lovely and atmospheric eating house, we stopped for a coffee and couldn’t resist a hot cross bun! We had our dog with us and had the option of outside bistro table seating or any seating inside. Radio playing cheerfully in the background and efficient and friendly staff. Will plan a dinner in the future when we visit the area again!

Emma and the team were pleased to welcome my walking group for a lunch during a ten mile segment of our walk along the Shakespeare's Way, a long distance footpath passing through Brightwell Baldwin. Anxious to enjoy the stopover and not take much more than 90 minutes, our pre-ordering was appreciated. The group chose items from the full lunch menu ranging from £8 to £20. Within 15 minutes of arriving, everybody had their drinks and their food! All were impressed with the presentation and quality. Several perfectly poached eggs! Choice of delightful fresh real hand-pumped ales from Rebellion. All this, and we could have been ready to leave in an hour and a quarter. Such a shame we had to!

Great Sunday lunch compared to some we have had lately. Service was prompt and efficient. Plate of veg was very small to share between two people, one each would be a better portion. Table next to us said exactly the same thing. We couldn't find a dessert we liked, but this was a personal preference. Bread/rice pud or salted caramel not our thing. How about a crumble or cheesecake option please. Only thing to mention about the venue is the overall condition of the property is a little shabby. Could do with some renovation and maintenance here and there, as many areas are quite tired now, including the front of building to the roadside. However we had a cracking Sunday roast here and will be back.

This place doesn't seem to have a website so impossible to review the menu, etc. and the promised email was never sent. However it wouldn't have been any use anyway because they had run out of half the items on the menu. Several fish dishes but the only meat available was beef burger. This used to be one of our favourite pub/restaurants but, to us, it has lost its sparkle and the decor has become rather bland (which in a building like this, is difficult!). The burgers were fine and my wife's fish was OK too. The young waiter was very sweet and did his best. All in all, OK and perhaps it would have been better if the full choice had been available.

Booked for 6 of us for a Sunday lunch, got delayed in traffic, fully expected to get bumped but no, they went out of their way to accommodate us. Car park was easy to use, The initial welcome was fantastic, the atmosphere was just like sitting in your favourite room - open fire, comfortable chairs, friendly ambience - yet the lighting was fine for reading the menus. Which makes a change. Great variety of food, we all had something different and we all thought our choice was excellent. Again that makes a c hange - normally at least one of the party has food envy and/or is disappointed with what they had. Not this time. Fabulous - possibly the best I've ever had, in fact - sticky tooffee pudding. And even the coffee was excellent. Overall about as good as it gets.

I am a regular visitor the the Lord Nelson and would highly recommend a visit. The breakfasts are absolutely delicious and are not to be missed. The salads and quiches that are on offer around lunchtime are homemade and exquisite. The main menu is also scrumptious and not to be missed. In the winter this is a cosy place to shelter from the weather, next to the fire with a mulled wine. In the summer there is seating out the front and in an extensive paved garden at the back which is very peaceful and surrounded by beautiful flowers. The staff make the place what it is and always have time for a chat, which is hugely appreciated as an often solo visitor.

She is lovely, very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. Her entire staff are brilliant. Today was a set Father's Day lunch but I didn't like any of the starters. What a lovely rural pub! Nestled in a beautiful village. The evening started well and only improved. The service and meal were pleasantly superior. We decided to have starters, a party of 4. Pigeon was outstanding for myself, my partner and friends had duck parfait, tempura prawns and the soufflé. They stated that they were all cooked to perfection. Main meal, one Nelson burger, rack of lamb, rabbit casserole and 1/2 roast duck. The rabbit casserole was to die for, gorgeous and probably the best casserole I have had for a long time. Everyone was happy with the mains. We waited for a while for the desserts (our choice) chatting and experiencing the good wine and atmosphere. The desserts came, I opted for the cheese board which I shared with my partner, trio of puds and the brûlée, all of which were fantastic. After our meal we sat in the garden which was lovely on a lovely summer evening, feeling exceptionally full and satisfied. The staff could not do enough for us and we're always polite. Definitely recommend for a drink or a meal. Beautiful pub inside and out.

Arrived a few minutes early for our Sunday lunch with friends and were told that our table was being relaid and would be ready in a few minutes. After some 20 minutes being ignored by a waitress who carried on taking orders after advising us she would attend to us in a minute, and totally ignored by the barman whodecided to carry on talking to a regular after assuring us he would see what the delay was, we were shown to a small table in a back room. The room had an unpleasant smell of cabbage and the table was draughty so we asked to be moved. After another wait we were moved to a bigger table in the same room, which could have been laid for us in the first place. Now to describe the food.In the past the food and service has been good. Not so this time. Two of us ordered the 1/2 duck. It was dry and fatty, the skin had not been crisped and the mound of vegetables on the plate was most unappetising. One of our party ordered the smoked haddock with a poached egg on top. What arrived quite franky looked as though someone had been sick on the plate. No care taken with the presentation and the egg mixed in with evrything else on the plate. The steak with a Dijon mustard glaze ordered was minute, lacking in glaze and the chips had been thrown onto the plate and immersed in a red wine sauce which caused them to be soggy. The owner did reduce our bill to reflect our experience, but this poor showing should not happen in the first place. We are definitely taking this off our locations to meet our friends.

We usually go the The Nelson on a weekend, but on a wet Tuesday evening we wanted somewhere where we could sit near a fire. The Nelson is unusual in being a decent place to drink as well as a superior restaurant, and wrapped into a really lovely building and village, its just as well its in the wilds or it would be impossible to get through the door.Anyway they have Rebellion IPA from the Marlow brewery so that was a good start and we did get a nice table near the bar, but us always the food is the star. I gather the chef has been there for 10 years and I have never anything but a very good meal in the 8 odd years I have been going. So we missed starters and I had Poussin, while others had Lamb Rump in red wine jus. It was great. The wine list is OK, nothing sophisticated, but good value. I think we had something from Navarre that was very nice at around £20, Anyway this is the best country pub in the South Chilterns and my favourite restaurant outside London.

It's a cold foggy day, having had a morning in business meeting we wanted a treat on the way home to London celebrate. I was driving, this countryside is so beautiful when it foggy and frosty, through Wallingford, Watlington, then I remembered this pub The Lord Nelson, we had snacked summer before last in garden and I seemed to remember a cosy old pub with good. We found this splendid pub, pretty all year round and welcoming all year round. We walked in, fires roaring, a buzz of chatter and we where lucky to have a table. Great service with a smile, lovely cosy atmosphere, great, tasty down to earth food. Just perfect.Highly recommend this little gem all year round!

We have been coming back for a number of years for a Christmas meal, and have never been disappointed. Excellent food and a very good wine list. The specials board is always worth ordering from. Local game is often on the menu.

We have met here for 3 years as a group. The most charming pub restaurant with so much character in a small village. The food is always very tasty and well presented. We do pre order for this time of year.

Good atmosphere - wood fire etc.; food was good - although most staff seemed fairly miserable!! Despite previous poor review the fish & chips was good - as was the lamb rack and veggie option. All-in-all a good meal/occasion.

We met up here with another couple for a pre-Christmas catch up. The fire created a lovely ambience and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food really was delicious. We had starters of scallops and pigeon breast and mains of steaks, a burger and pork fillet. It was all beautifully served and cooked to perfection (and coming from a background in the pub trade, I know a lot about pub food). Every pub has its off day, but for us it was a winner. We will be back again soon!

Lovely old country pub. Great look and feel to it. Food expensive for its quality. Average gastro pub food that is missing the wow factor. Seating uncomfortable. Quiet and intimate atmosphere at times felt uncomfortable. Service ok.

Twelve o'clock, a lovely fire in a delightful pub in a beautiful village opposite an ancient church - a delightful piece of England.I had a pint of draught Smugglers, delightful. The menu was very inviting, I had the scallops and black pudding to begin with. The main course was a Beef Wellington, a little individual one, served with dauphinois potatoes and green beans. It was delicious. We all had a lovely time until the car park. I asked my wife about her meal, "Terrible !!"Being dairy free always limits her choice but that wasn't the problem. She usually enjoys a gastro pubs fish and chips, and has become a good judge of it. She doesn't usually enjoy fish shop's fare, soggy batter and flaccid chips. The fish at the Nelson was good but the chef needs to change the oil in the deep fryer and learn how to create crispy batter to cook the fish in and then make crisp, tasty chips in the fresh oil.Her meal was a disaster - the chips and the batter tainted by the oil and poorly fried to be served limp and soggy. Why didn't she complain? The three others in the party were obviously enjoying their food and nobody likes to spoil the mood of the lunch by complaining, but the truth can come out on a Trip Advisor without upsetting the rest of the party.Three very good meals and a disaster - such a shame. In a chefs kitchen with a deep fat fryer it is simple to cook fish and chips. Fresh good quality oil, set the correct temperature and fry for the correct time. It doesn't take a diploma to do a few tests and write down what works and forget what doesn't. Once your batter and timing is perfected, repeat repeat repeat and your customers will be very satisfied. The Beef Wellington has been perfected, now go back to basics and get your fish and chips up to the same standard. When your bill for four 2 course meals with only a few drinks (the curse of two drivers) comes to £180 everything should be VERY GOOD.75% wonderful25% terrible"Could do better!"

Change of management has led to poorer quality food and presentation . Ambience still lovely and service is adequate . Staff friendly. Menu drastically reduced and not imaginative.Chips undercooked. Food slopped on plate. Vegetable microwaved. However, fish was nicely cooked and burger was tasty. Ice cream was excellent .Some short cuts being taken in the kitchen that need to be rectified in order to restore former quality. Could be good but, for now, only average.

Went here for a walk and lunch. Great service and amazing menu and specials board. The salmon salad and lobster salads were delicious! The prosecco cocktail went down well too! A touch expensive at £60 for 2 for Sunday lunch, but the excellent experience and atmosphere balance it out.

Our friends took us here for lunch so it was a complete surprise . It's a lovely old pub with an interior full of character. Good choice on the menu . I had pigeon breast with black pudding and then sea bass and tagliatelle . Surprised to have 2 fillets of sea bass so the meal was plentiful . Rest of the party enjoyed theirs too. Good efficient service too

Well what a surprise this fabulous place is. Best steak I've tasted for quite a while. The chef actually knew how to grill a rare steak. We went for a evening meal to try out the atmosphere and quality of the food. It was so good that we booked it for a retirement do for 20 people. We all ordered prior to the evening. Everything was perfect, nothing was too much trouble. We have another event coming up next April and we shall definitely book it again. We may have to try it out a few times (just in case.)!!!

Having visited and dined at The Black Horse on numerous occasions I can only surmise that the AI review is for another establishment!!! On our most recent visit we enjoyed several dishes from the menu, all excellent, a special mention must go to the oak smoked pork ribeye, truly mouthwatering. Our service from Jess was exemplary, attentive but not intrusive. She should give masterclasses. All in all a splendid lunchtime experience.

We can not fault the food, the food was delicious. The only thing that let our visit down was the service. We had our starters cleared and wasn’t offered another drink even though we had empty glasses. Mains came (still empty glasses) and even though we addressed that partner didn’t like onions we were assured that we would be fine with the steak only to find out it had onions in the sauce, partner asked if peppercorn sauce was available, chef said it would be 5 which we said no problem, partner waited to eat steak, got to 15 minutes later so we chased up the sauce only to find out the waitress thought we said don’t worry about it. In that time we had to hunt for vinegar as wasn’t asked if we needed any sauces and then went to the bar to get more drinks and ask for ketchup as also wasn’t offered. There was only 3 tables but plenty of staff on floor so no need for poor service. Must point out the manager did come and apologise.

I am a kind of burger fan, my other half celebrates the national fish and chips day here 😊, but I would say here the Scottish Cod and the Berrick Burger are the non-plus ultra of pub food nationwide ✅ All ingredients supplied by local farms, bakeries. Hospitality, kindness, five stars, A+ class. Pets friendly, playground for kids, beer garden, spacious carpark, friendly locals. Strongly recommended place☝

We booked Crazy Bear Stadhampton as a treat for our wedding anniversary and were looking forward to our 2 night stay and dinner in the Thai restaurant on our anniversary day in early November. We were a bit concerned that we didn’t get a response to an email (sent prior to booking) and couldn’t get anyone to answer the phone when we tried to call prior to our arrival. This lead us to check online reviews which were mostly negative particularly for the restaurants. We had a feeling of trepidation. However, everything was excellent. We had booked a Boujee room (these I understand are just down the road from the main hotel) but were upgraded free of charge to a Decadent room. The room was fab, very spacious and had a copper bath at the bottom of the bed. We had a wet room with lovely fluffy towels and robes. The grounds and hotel were lovely, very funky and fun - would be nice to go back at a busier time in the summer. Staff were all lovely and took care of us. Our Thai dinner was really nice with good sized portions. We had a starter each, a main and a shared side dish. Just a few observations to be aware of: Drinks and food are pretty expensive with added service charges. There was only a coffee machine in the room, no tea making options. (I popped round to the garage and grabbed a couple of tea’s on the first morning) Our room (room 10) had another room above. If the occupants of that room are a bit inconsiderate and up and down a lot, it can be irritating and noisy. But over-all we had a wonderful stay and a good experience.
