The black horse hotel in South Oxfordshire

If your preference is for superb beef cooked to pink perfection & with generous supplies of it, then don't bother going anywhere else: The Black Horse is the place where you'll find it, as we did yesterday. Coupled with an enormous Yorkshire pudding & copious supplies of accompanying veg, this was a very fine meal indeed. We would recommend going there wholeheartedly. And the sticky toffee pudding was spot on, too. Light as a feather, it melted in the mouth.

A convivial lunch with good quality food , pleasant attentive service , this was a good experience. The cheese soufflé starter followed by the trout main went down very well with a couple of their house wines

We had breakfast at 10:30 on new year's morning. (Second year running) There were no other customers when we arrived but the place was spotless, decor was beautiful and there was a very nice and welcoming atmosphere with music playing. All the staff we encountered were friendly; greeting us when we arrived and wishing us a good day as we left. Ioana, who served us, was very accommodating to dietary requirements and switching out some food items for others, she checked whether there were allergies in the group and made sure everything was ok after we were served.Hot drinks and cooked breakfast were all excellent! The 4 of us all had something different and no one had a bad word to say I would highly recommend.

The opening hours showed online said that it was open at 9.30am on Boxing Day. I rang up on Christmas day to confirm this was correct, and the man that answered said yes, they were open at 9.30 on Boxing Day. So on Boxing Day we packed all the family into the car, drove to Thame, paid for parking, and walked through the town to the Black Horse. We arrived at the door at 10.15 am (I checked), and it was closed. Thanks Black Horse. From the other reviews I see you make a habit of this. We went to Gail's instead - who are always open when they say they're going to be.

My daughter worked at weekends to save up to take her brother out with a group of friends She was so disappointed as the staff rolled their eyes or laughed at their requests and clearly could not be bothered because they were a bit younger and clearly did not have masses to spend Its a shame as although it might not have been the biggest outlay of the evening ( about £100) it was so important to my daughter and I dont think she will ever return

The seasonal menu was full of fresh and vibrant flavors. Can’t wait to try the next season!

A very wet and windy day found solace and comfort at the Black Horse with lovely food and service . Beetroot Terrine followed by Slow Roasted Shoulder of Venison Yum Yum

Nice Sunday roast here. Three children and four adults, food tasty, especially the vegetarian. Only complaint was the crazy large size of the children's roasts, which were advertised as half portions. One of our adult portions was smaller than one of the children's ones, which was just served on a smaller plate. When we pointed this out they offered more yorkshires and potatoes, but it was the meat quantity that was lacking. The waitress just shrugged when we pointed this out and brought more potatoes. For £20+ per roast a tiny amount of meat is not ok.

Private event. Small room, but very clean and lovely staff.

Really enjoyed the food and nothing was too much trouble for the table servers. The best part was the Pistachio Soufflé absolutely divine.

Having visited and dined at The Black Horse on numerous occasions I can only surmise that the AI review is for another establishment!!! On our most recent visit we enjoyed several dishes from the menu, all excellent, a special mention must go to the oak smoked pork ribeye, truly mouthwatering. Our service from Jess was exemplary, attentive but not intrusive. She should give masterclasses. All in all a splendid lunchtime experience.

Perfect place for Friday night dinner to wind down from a long week. Service is fantastic.

Exactly what a pub restaurant should be! Great dining experience in a traditional English pub environment. Ignore the 'Ai' generated summary. Excellent food and wine menu, very attentive service and we had the best duck we have ever had - will definitely be back for our next family gathering

Literally the best roast we’ve had out in a long time! Cozy atmosphere, fantastic service & a beautiful Sunday roast - what more could you ask for?!

The setting and atmosphere is lovely, food excellent and we were not rushed at all. The menu is very good indeed and not at all run of the mill. We will certainly be back.

Lovely food and friendly service.

Unfortunately very 'meh'. Starters were nice, mains we had steak. Disappointing steaks with a lot of sinew. One was overcooked, well done rather than medium although regrettably we didn't send it back. The waitress seemed uninterested when we pointed it out. On the whole quite a slow service, so we left before dessert.

We drove down from Harrogate to spend time with family and part of the trip was to meet up with friends and family for a Sunday lunch, we had visited the Black Horse twice before so booked for 7 to sit down to Sunday lunch. We had excellent food Roast Beef and Yorkshires with bottomless roast potatoes seemed a real table favourite, although one guest had the chicken, 2 had the veggie beetroot option, and one went for the Beef Burger, there wasn't one complaint in fact we were all delighted with the food. The service was attentive without being overbearing. All in all a special lunch made better!

Three of us dined here on Saturday lunchtime. We chose this establishment mainly because of the Google reviews and we were very pleased that we did. It was busy but without being noisy. The service was excellent and the food exemplary. We all chose different things and everyone was more than pleased. It represented good value for many and as far as we are concerned The Black Horse is highly recommended.

We were taken here by old friends, and what a treat! The food was uniformly excellent, the servers were lovely and the place itself is delightful. Can't wait to go back next time we're in the area.

My wife and I were walk ins to this pub on a very busy Sunday. Despite being clearly fully booked the team manage to find us some where to sit after about a 20 minute wait with a drink in the bar. We both had roast dinners, from the selection of chicken, pork and beef, we both had the beef. The portions were generous, the food was to an amazing standard and the potatoes were simply awesome. The team were attentive and provided excellent service. It’s a bit of a trek from home but we hope to be back!

Great new menu, delicious food. Busy even on weeknights, this place a nice gentle buzz. Most of the venue is given over to dining, with a small area for drinks.

Food wasn't up to scratch but everything else spot on, food ratings not the best after looking the pub up afterwards.

Very nice food loved the experience

We met friends at The Black Horse and for both of us it was an hour drive which was worth it. The food was superb as was the choice. The knowledge of the staff to make a wine pairing choice was great and the staff were super.

Unfortunately for us, we had a group of 8 seated in the back next to a very happy group that was so loud we could barely hear, and the serving staff seemed flustered and overwhelmed. Food was slow coming and two out of the orders were so poorly prepared they required attention from the staff.

Never fails to deliver on service and standard of food. The waitress was efficient and very personable. The food, as always, was fantastic with great quality products prepared by a skilled chef. The soufflé is just amazing.

An update on the last time I visited. A lovely setting with lovely decor and a cosy vibe. Service is good but once more the food needs improvement. Heard good things from others and thought I need to try it again after a long spell of not visiting and it’s a step up on the last one but again the food is average for the price you are paying. I understand with rising prices and inflation that the menu needs to adjust to that, but lukewarm food doesn’t cost anything.

What happened. This was good, with good traditional food. Now the 4 of us didn't understand half of what was on the menu. My Dad asked for orange squash and was given juice. Very disappointing Neal. We will not be back

Heard sexual comments to other members of staff, found inappropriate. Food nice but overpriced for the size, went from reading reviews but wouldn’t recommend.

We went for our anniyand couldn't fault it. My partner started with the prawn and crayfish salad and I had the Mediterranean fish soup, which was divine. My partner then had the ducks and I the pork roulade. Finishing off with the chocolate mousse. All in all the food was perfect (the pork roulade especially) and the service was fantastic, couldn't fault it. I would recommend this to anyone as a great place for dinner, though having a look about the place when we were there, it would look like a good spot for a quick drink and a lunch meet up.

Lovely pub great service all our meals were great

We had the pleasure of experiencing the excellent staff and impeccable service at this establishment, which truly stood out. However, we were disappointed with the food. Unfortunately, the beef and ale pie didn't meet expectations—I've had better at local chippies. The portion size was also surprisingly small, reminiscent of rationing days. While the service is top-notch, I would recommend reconsidering the pie or exploring other menu options. Steak perhaps.

If you are looking to have one meal in Thame then I can’t recommend this pub / bistro enough. It was packed on a Thursday night and it soon became apparent t why. The bread and dips alone are worth dining here! This recommendation is given without reservation!

Very good vegan options, beetroot terrine starter was inspired and sweetcorn and pepper fritters delicious main course.

We took our friends to the Black horse for a Sunday Roast. I had the Beef and it was beautifully cooked, it was a huge plate of food. Polished off with some extra gravy. The beer was lovely, pint of Larger Peroni on tap. We couldn’t manage a pudding but the looked lovely from other tables.

What looks like a pub has turned out to be a very good restaurant. Reservation was necessary. Limited menu but one for very tasty and unique dishes. Stars for the chef! A direct hit, the service and atmosphere are also wonderful. And we found it extremely affordable after a successful meal.

Just had a really good dinner here with three generations of family. The food is good, it's a pleasant place and everyone is nice. They did get a couple of the desserts wrong but the right stuff turned up quickly and we were all happy.

Lovely old listed pub that is a surprise inside. Very popular, especially for food. Different dining areas, all with charm. Very nice outside eating / drinking area .

I give up. I sometimes arrange to meet clients there in the mornings. It's pleasant enough for a chat and coffee. But today (Thursday 11th July), for the THIRD time they've done this to me, they were closed (for training) when they were supposed to be open. I was actually there the day before, and there was no warning posted. Another wasted journey for me and my clients. Bloody embarrassing! From now on I'll be using a place that actually opens when they say they will. They think they're posh,and a cut above the other places in Thame. Well, at least the other places open when they should!

What an amazing pub to visit for an amazing dinner. We came here to celebrate a birthday and were not let down. Even though there was a large group in the restaurant the food was still served in a timely manner and all of it was delicious. They even managed to accommodate a booking time change only 2 hours in advance. Would definitely come back again.

Shrinkflation and increase in price We meet up with friends every year at the Black Horse in Thame. Since last time, I think we all felt that restaurant suffered from shrinkflation and probably about a £2 increase in cost on the mains. Two of us had the steak and ale and noticed that the pie, mash and beens were small at a cost of about £18. You felt that you needed to order sides at an extra £4! On the positive side the atmosphere and service were good. The desert (crumble) was excellent. BOOMEL

The fish soup and cheese souffle was 10 out of ten...sunday roast beef! Beef cut the wrong way so flowery, potatoes great, veg OK...but! Starter magnificent.

What they lack in portion size is more than made up for by the size of the bill. And what the hell is meant by their claim to be 'LGBTQ+ friendly'? What does it mean exactly? Another company going silly woke... For goodness sake, you're just a pub, not the United Nations.

This is the second time we have had a family reunion at this pub (6 senior citizens). We all enjoyed the food - I had trout and almonds - lovely! The service was good and the staff very friendly. The pub is in Thame which is a lovely place with loads of very old buildings in the high street. We had a lovely day and in the famous phrase we will be back!

Another Fantastic meal out, beautiful and the waitress team were brilliant. Our waitress was very helpful and kept our glasses full... Highly recommended. Update: No change, place still worth a visit and food is beautiful.

Most dishes fantastic, esp the cheese souffle and spring green risotto, but the prawn cocktail a huge disappointment, sadly. Virtually no lime mayo, def not worth £9.50 :-( But... + Good, friendly service on a busy Saturday night. + Quite a few small plate options for those with smaller appetites. + Nice looking bar at front for pre-dinner drinks

I see they've dropped the bar menu. They're getting vey pretentious. They seem to have forgotten they're just another boozer. Oh well, me and my proletariat friends and colleagues will just have to go to Jimmy Figg's for our working class grub!

Excellent food as always with great service

Excellent Sunday roast here. Beef cooked perfectly to our liking - rare and pink in the middle, tender and extremely tasty. Great accompaniments and superb Yorkshire pud. Very busy on the Sunday we were there - obviously popular and justifiably so based on what we ate. Pistachio souffle is one of the best souffles anywhere and is consistently good. Service is efficient and attentive without feeling overbearing - extra veg and gravy are always freely offered. 2 and 3 course options available to save on the individual course prices.

I popped in for a Sunday lunch passing by on my motorbike during a nice day. The staff was lovely, food was amazing (I had beef roast and some mushrooms as a starter)

Ridiculously small portion sizes which border on being misleading for being advertised as main meals. If the restaurant needs to make margin, increase your prices, don't shrink the portions. It's the second time experienced this at the establishment and now won't return. It's a shame as the ambience is good as was / is the service.

Visited on Saturday as in the area and i had Applewood smoked pork ribeye with Dauphinoise potato, roasted Braeburn apple, red cabbage, pork jus - it was very nice as the pic shows. All the 3 other meals had were also very good. Lovely service and beer good too, the only negative was that when i went to the bar to pay for my meal the charge was £2 more - when i questioned this i was told it was a service charge (to be fair she offered to take it off). i didn't expect this for a party of 4 when we were going to the bar to order and pay for food and drink! It may have been quoted on the paper menu but its not on-line when you look and thought the non-mention of this charge was underhand IMO. Overall good visit....

Really delicious food, presented well and a good price.

I had been given a voucher for my birthday to use for a 2 course meal & a glass of Prosecco for 2 people. So these 2 meals & a Prosecco had been paid for upfront. This was the closest restaurant to use it in from where I live in South Oxfordshire so we traveled a distance as the reviews seemed good. We was seated, given our menus 1 being a set menu for the voucher the other the normal menu & told we could order from the main menu but would have to pay the extra if it was more expensive. We gave our soft drinks order & asked for water. One of us chose a cheaper main meal off the normal menu & the other off the set. We had our desserts & a coffee each to finish our meal. Food was out very quick & have to say was all very fresh & lovely. We asked for the bill & that’s when it all went wrong. Now we were expecting to pay for the 2 soft drinks & 2 coffees so you can imagine our shock when we got a bill for £60! We told the waitress this wasn’t right as they’d charged us for a meal, drinks, a bottle of water which we never received & a service charge. She went to check & told us as we’d ordered off the main menu we had to pay £22 for a meal as the voucher value didn’t cover it yet the meal was only £17. As this made no sense we made her go back & tell her manager we wasn’t happy still. She then came back with a bill for £20 which when all 3 of us added up on our calculators it still didn’t add up. The manager then came to us asking if we were alright & when we explained to her the numbers still didn’t add up she took the bill back off again & came back with a 3rd one for £6. We paid & the look off her face was enough to kill! & she rudely stormed away from us without a word. We got up to head out & she turned her back completely ignoring us. Never have I been so embarrassed & been treated like this in a public place. Not the customer service I give in my place of work even if the customer is rude to me which I wasn’t. Shame as her behaviour puts me off ever going back even though the food was lovely. I also didn’t think until I got home we never even got offered our Prosecco!

Anticipating a Wednesday steak night deal - sadly we paid an extra £24 on top of cost of 2 steaks! Arguably a good price for a nice bottle of wine but definitely not my idea of a free bottle. Check your bill! Sadly rip off feeling took the edge off a nice meal!

A really enjoyable meal was had at The Black Horse. I started with the sausage salad, which was extremely tasty. I followed this with the lamb roulade, which was amazing. Friendly staff, dog friendly in the bar area. If you're looking for good quality pub food in a relaxed setting, then I'd highly recommend this establishment.

We went with friends this weekend. My husband and I both chose the Pork Ribeye and both found our meals quite disappointing. The apple was uncooked and the dauphinois potatoes were just a slab of dry potatoes basically. All the helpings were small and why should we have to pay for green veg as an extra. I don’t think we’ll be hurrying back to be honest.

Disappointing meal bland and poor quality steaks that were tough as old boot! Food poorly presented compared to the photos you see online. I was somewhat put off by the kitchen staff all in the car park smoking on my arrival. The chicken portion resembled a chicken portion from the local chippy. £190 for lunch not good value won’t be returning
