Had a family lunch there recently. Was our local, but under new management. Service was really good, would have given 5 stars but food took a long time to arrive. Disappointing. Booked Sunday lunch and specifically asked if they did gluten free which they confirmed they did. Unfortunately when we got there the only gf starter was parsnip soup without bread, the gf roast meant simply removing half the plate (the Yorkshire and stuffing etc) but still charged the same price and the only gf dessert was lemon sorbet. The menu looked lovely with a good number of choices for non gf so it’s a shame they can’t be bothered to cater for dietary requirements (or perhaps don’t make their food fresh to be able to adapt it). How on earth a prawn cocktail can’t be offered as gf if it came without bread is beyond me! If they’d been honest about the incredibly limited choices we’d have gone elsewhere and been able to actually enjoy a proper Sunday lunch. Won’t be returning

Stayed overnight at short notice. Supper was great and the staff and service were friendly. Pub is dog friendly and even allow dogs overnight in the rooms. Just as well as the boy got a bit over excited in the bar whilst I was having my supper and allowed me to eat in my room. The ham, egg and chips were excellent as was the salt and pepper squid starter. There's a Nespresso machine in the room although it didn't seem to work in the same way as my own. A nice bed and the boy and I overslept. Lovely little village location too. It was the first time I can recall visiting the village although I must have driven past the entrance frequently.

We love this pub; it is a real village pub, set conveniently on the Ridgeway path for walkers. It has served the beautiful village of South Stoke for centuries alongside walkers and neighbouring village dwellers. The food is delicious and I can honestly say they make the best raspberry fool ever. My husband and I walked there just for pudding the other evening. The draught beer is served perfectly and there is cosy seating inside as well as plenty of outdoor space. And it is very dog friendly too. A lovely pub all round.

We have been to the Perch and Pike before and visited again as we were struggling to find a country pub open on a Tuesday evening for a birthday meal. We arrived to find that there were a few other tables taken so there was a good atmosphere and the food was fantastic as ever. We had the smoked mackeral pate and cauliflower bhajis to start, both were excellent and good sized portions. For mains we both had the fish pie which again was excellent. The service was good and the food came at a good pace, not too rushed! The bill for 2 of us including a beer each came to about £65. We hope to return again soon.

A family bereavement brought the local community to remember a ‘recently’ lost member of the family and community. Hosted by owners and staff, a wonderful afternoon buffet (all home cooked and prepared) was laid on for forty+ guests...great variety of food and cakes. Later in the evening, our family had dinner, equally excellent from a wide choice of menu. Room accommodation was basic but nevertheless very comfy and warm with all the essentials. Following morning breakfast was fantastic…cereals, fruit, croissants and a great choice of cooked breakfasts. What could have been a sombre occasion turned into a celebration. All round, a great 24 hour stay and wonderfully hosted…thank you…a pleasure to stay in this old village pub at the heart of the community.

Family celebration reserved in advance. Table not set for us on arrival. In fairness the food was for the most part enjoyable but there is far too much on the plate which we all found off-putting and returned in most cases half what we were served. I find this amount of waste appalling and there is no excuse for it. It also prevented us from even considering the dessert menu because we were over full. The service was slow, we waited 45 minutes between starter and the first main being brought to the table and all mains did not come at once. I am posting this because I did contact the Perch & Pike after our visit but they have not had the courtesy to respond so I assume they do not really want constructive criticism.

Tomato salad starter - tomatoes were a bit unripe. Halloumi salad very tasty. Salmon en croute average, potatoes unseasoned , watercress sauce a bit bland. Browsing the pudding menu and Basil Fawlty appeared thinking we were a late walk-in and asked me did I realise the time? Made me feel a right c**t. Then he realised his mistake and apologised. Cherry bakewell was somewhat uncooked so sent back and taken off bill. £70 total. I wish I'd done what I usually do on my wedding anniversary....stayed at home!

I had the recommended ploughman's (choose cheese, pate or ham - I chose ham) which came with 4 little bread rolls, coleslaw, salad, red onion marmalade, home-made picalilli, a large pickled onion and half a scotch egg. Every bit of it was excellent - and at £9.50 it was good value too. My friend had brie & cranberry in bread (ciabatta?) with chips & salad. Having walked 16 miles on the Ridgeway, a night’s stay was a real treat and a chance to recover. We couldn’t have been luckier to find The Perch and Pike pub in South Stoke, just a little way along the Thames from Goring. From the moment we arrived and ordered beer and food we were warmly welcomed. The food was top quality as was the beer. We decided to stay for a night as they had a room available and we were treated to the very best. The difference, I think, was the little things and the attention to detail. Our room was clean and fresh with lovely white cotton bedding, just what we needed. We slept very well. In the morning, there was a Nespresso coffee machine so we could have a decent coffee to wake up to. There was also a little pot of shortbreads to have with our coffee. One of the best things was to be able to have a bath. Most places only have showers so this was another treat. Breakfast was top quality too with fresh raspberries, strawberries and blueberries with Greek yoghurt as well as the best granola I have tasted. Hot pastries and the best cooked English breakfast finished it off. I just can’t rate this place high enough and will definitely try to come back some time. The thanks have to go to the staff who really went the extra mile to give us the best experience. Thank you.

Service - disinterested at best, dismissive at worst. Never rude.Food - a superb starter (monkfish ceviche). Best thing about the burger was the quality and taste of the patty. The rest of the usual ensemble was OK. Fryer must have been too low as chips/fries a bit greasy and we noticed another diner had received fish and chips with the fish looking quite greasy. Amateur mistake. Worst was a main special of lamb rump on a middle Eastern cous cous. For £18 I received a lukewarm dish with four measly slices of lamb - less meat than in the burger - and the cous cous had started on its trip to the middle East but somehow the expected spices and flavourings weren't invited. Pudding was excellent.Service - no one at all came to see if our meal was up to snuff. Avoided the entire time. I raised the shocking main I had had, v politely but leaving them in no doubt, and rather expected it to be reflected in the bill. It wasn't, no one took it further nor apologised. We paid. We didn't tip and we shan't return.Value for money - the pricing is very ambitious and if all the food were as good as the starter and the dessert then it can be justified.Going here will be a gamble. We gambled £51 for two and lost.

We had an excellent stay at the Perch and Pike this weekend. Reason for writing really was the warm welcome and hospitality from Simon and his team. Our family (mum dad and two small girls) stayed in the pub and a large group joined us for lunch on the Sunday. Simon went above and beyond eg producing plasters at bedtime for our girls who had bumped their knees earlier in the day; finding and rescuing a favourite stuffed animal left in the garden; full English at 7.30am; and total patience with our large and unwieldy group lunch (including eight children under aged six). We can’t have been the easiest guests.... Thanks a bunch Simon, we’ll definitely be back.

We stayed here in November and we were well looked after. The room was very cosy. We had tea and coffee making facilities. Comfy bed. Good shower. We would have liked a bedside table though. Because it was a Friday evening we found the pub a bit noisy until about midnight. Though it wasn’t really a problem.

We haven’t visited for more than a year but returned yesterday. Our meals were delicious - my husband would recommend the pheasant & my favourite is the fish & chips. Not unusual I grant you, but very fresh, well cooked with lovely batter. It is a perfectly sized portion - not too overfacing. The chocolate parfait to follow was to die for!

Great Sunday lunch with 6 of us sitting down in the cosy inside having had drinks in the garden in the sunshine. We had a mix of excellent food and wine and not a complaint to be heard. Great staff and top service. Worth looking out for as it's not easy to find.

This is a lovely pub and dog friendly too. The food however was a bit hit and miss. From our party of 4 two had the fish and chips as the Pie was all gone (this by 7:40!) so were the mussels! The pieces of cod were sort of brick shaped, and being so thick had to be cooked for longer than the batter needed so it looked rather dark brown and was not that pleasant a taste, the fish was nicely cooked. One had a burger and found it a little dry, so overcooked I suppose. The one lovely dish was the Scallop, and seafood linguine which they kindly omitted the Chorizo for us. It had a delicious and very creamy sauce. There were no light desserts so we gave them a miss. So one course each an a couple of rounds of basic drinks and a bill of over £100, didn't really seem that good value to me.

This restaurant may seem a little off the beaten track but we went there on a whim and were so glad that we did. It was early on a Saturday evening well before the main rush. We were well looked after by the duty staff. They were kind to my grandsons and organised a kids menu version of fish and chips that went down a treat. The rest of us had belly pork, soft shell crab and linguine. Everything was cooked to perfection and the on tap beers were just right. Definitely money well spent with every incentive to come again.

You have got to know South Stoke to get there. Set off from the main road, and few hundred meters from a beautiful stretch of the Thames, it's a lovely village with a beautiful Saxon church and a pleasant main street. The Perch and Pike has been there for a long time, and offers also accommodation. The pub/restaurant area is beautiful, with several separate rooms with different character but all very "pubby". The food was absolutely lovely: we had venison and seabass, both fantastically cooked. Warm and friendly service, and a very reasonable bill complete the review.

Seek out this quiet village gastropub in pretty South Stoke, in an area of outstanding beauty. From a traditional country frontage on the main Street, the size inside, going from one cosy, black beamed room to another, is deceptive. In winter an open wood fire and a sofa to sink into must be a welcome draw. At the back is a large car park.

We hadn’t been here for years and are glad we have found it again. Great food, great beer and nice wine for a midweek meal Nice garden although we chose to eat inside. Friendly staff and obviously fresh local produce. Good menu choices and all delicious. Prices very good for the area and not as expensive as some serving less good food .Hope it stays like that and we will definitely go again and have recommended to friends in the area.

We went to this pub for a light bite to eat and a drink. It's a very quaint little pub but staff are friendly and food is of a very high standard. A little pricey but you do get what you pay for and it was worth every penny! There were 8 of us and we managed to get a table outside without any problems - plenty of parking on site too. Would definitely recommend this pub and will be going back.
